The Digest – Gameweek Twelve

Tottenham bring Gameweek 12 to a close, sparing Aston Villa a spanking but throwing Fantasy managers options from all angles. Elsewhere, a pre-season certainty returned to form in timely fashion, reviving an option that had previously seemed irresistible…

The Player

While Yakubu and Heidar Helguson pulled a brace apiece out of the hat to provide further budget considerations up front, it was Leighton Baines’ points haul that handed Fantasy managers maximum food for thought.

Going into the season, Baines looked nailed-on for our lineups. Five goals and 11 assists last season, following on from 9 in 2009/10, the Everton left-back was delivering the returns of a mid-price midfielder, with the opportunity to throw in the occasional clean sheet. With Mikel Arteta’s departure to the Emirates, Baines was also installed as the Goodison penalty taker – surely a factor that would seal the deal?

Yet Baines’ Fantasy stock gradually fell as the gameweeks passed. Everton’s inability to claim clean sheets, compounded by key injuries and a run of opponents that limited their attacking potential, meant that the former Wigan man’s potential man dried up. Having claimed strong initial ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we witnessed heavy sales and a price drop from 8.0 to 7.8.

However, the theories thrown around at the start of the season should remain fresh in our minds. We explored matters further in last week’s Monitor article – all the statistical signposts pointed to a turn in fortunes – and so it proved.

Baines, at his best when Everton have some form, is effectively an immensely effective winger with set-piece command and the added potential of clean sheets. For 7.8 that seems a fair deal – when you consider Everton’s fixtures hand them opponents that give them a fair crack of building on Saturday’s win, suddenly his acquisition continues to make sense all over again. The problem now is finding the funds – it all seemed so easy back in August.

The Team

Back in gameweek 10, The Digest sang the praises of Harry Redknapp’s side, emphasising the wealth of attacking talent open to Fantasy managers. Just a couple of gamweeks on and, while Harry’s been under the surgeon’s knife, little has changed in terms of his team’s potential.

Last night’s 2-0 win over a Villa side, who seemingly turned up at White Hart Lane to frustrate and contain, should have been more emphatic. Tottenham’s midfield conjured opportunities, the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon tormented Alex McLeish’s bewildered full-backs, while Emmanuel Adebayor found his scoring touch after a recent drought.

Defensively, Tottenham also look composed. Admittedly, Villa posed little threat but with Ledley King restored to the heart of the back-four, Redknapp’s side were more resolute and showed every indication that, as mid-price defensive assets go, they are worthy of consideration. Full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Kyle Walker stand out as the key options – two more considerations within a Tottenham squad that remains buoyant and brimming with Fantasy profit.

The Talking Point

Which brings us nicely to the talking point. Gareth Bale’s performance last night took him to 3 assists and 3 goals in his last three gameweeks. Seven bonus points have inevitably followed in a spell that has seen him suddenly emerge as a consistent Fantasy performer.

We spoke at length about his potential in last week’s Monitor article – our Members will have seen plenty of evidence in that article which pre-empted last night’s assist returns. The theory is that Bale is a different animal this season; his form and display last night only added further evidence to support that view.

The issue for Fantasy managers concerns the acquisition of Bale as an alternative to Rafael Van der Vaart. There can be no question that the Dutchman is a prime Fantasy asset – a playmaker who commands set-pieces and penalties, and a player who has scored 19 goals in the last year – a total bettered only by Robin Van Persie and Darren Bent.

Van der Vaart has drawn blanks in his last two outings, however, and, last night’s withdrawal on 68 minutes was the second consecutive game in which he’s been hauled off with over 20 minutes on the clock – the fourth time in six gameweeks.

With Jermain Defoe straining at the leash, this tactic of Redknapp’s seems set to continue, meaning that Van der Vaart will need to damage opponents and return Fantasy points in just over an hour per game. Bale, in comparison, is unquestionably a 90-minute man and looks immune to rest and rotation. With Cameroon failing to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, there’s also little chance that Bale will be forced to shift to left-back to cover for the loss of Assou-Ekotto, as he was on occasions last time round.

There’s a simple solution to the conundrum – draft in both Van der Vaart and Bale. This may jar at first but, had the Dutchman been classified as a forward, you could argue it would be a solution adopted without too much thought.

As it stands, Tottenham continue to have a run of favourable fixtures in front of them – a run that suggests that the wins and goals will go on flowing. Aside from David Silva and perhaps Frank Lampard, you can argue that there are currently few, if any midfielders, who offer the scoring potential of the Tottenham pair going into the New Year.

The Van der Vaart/Bale pairing is a Fantasy basket that appears to cradle all our eggs rather nicely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How come the league leader in my mini league hasn't had the transfers points deducted yet? He got 78 for the gameweek, and it says he made 3 transfers, and should have 8 points deducted, but he still hasn't and I've added up the scores and everything.

I think you've worked it out wrong. Look at his gameweek history, add 70 points to his total score at the end of week 11 and you should get to his current total.

wary abaot carling cup fixture after GW13.. chelsea vs liverpool, arsenal vs chelsea. Bargain captain should be lampard and RVP. Any idea that both of them will be rested for cup match??

Hit wrong reply.... On the same boat here, don’t know who to captain. Both have tough must win CL games and strong teams will be played for the Carling Cup. If they get rested it could probably be for PL games but still you never know. What does not help is that Lampard is 33 and RVP could brake if played to often. My gut says RVP but my head says Lampard.....tough decision.

don't worry yourself on that front. RVP doesn't play in the CC - Wenger plays his youngest non-starting team then. I'm more worried he'll get injured tonight & regardless of whether Lampard is booked on Saturday v Wolves there is no chance he'll play either. Booked he'd miss that game, not booked he'll miss that game so as to avoid any chance he'll be booked in it and miss the Man City game the following weekend

i plan to switch to silva or vdv but both of them will play away from home. Still think mancini will be happy with a draw against liverpool and put a stronger and fresh team against arsenal in carling cup match which mean maybe aguero or silva start on bench. Very tricky gameweek.

I'm hanging on to Nani for ManU cover &:
            1) Considering letting go off Silver for Lamp and
            2) Upgrading ShawX to Baines

That's how much spare cash he gives you, Christina.

If I get rid I will get Lamps so its at least easy to get him back in 2 moves.

The other option is just go with Aguero. If Rooney doesn't play this week they will probably both be the same price in a few weeks time anyway.

Rooney has gone 7 league games without scoring, I think, and in that time he's had defences as accommodating as Wolves is, so its not like he's done naff all because of tough fixtures, really.

These are the kind of tough decisions that tend to define your season though.

This same thing happened with Drogba last year and loads of people on here were holding into him whilst he was losing them money hand over fist and picking up 2 pts a game maximum.

At some point you have to know when to let go of a big hitter once he has stopped hitting big, or else you drag your whole team down.

I couldn't resist the temptation with Bale in this form - he's certain to go up in price multiple times this week and next and not only do I want the pts I figure it's the only way I'll be able to make up the shortfall in my planned move to Nani in GW15!

        For completeness:

In the last 9 PL games Spurs have scored 22 goals(no less than 2 in any game and averaging nearly 2.5 per game). These 3 have scored 15 of the goals and had 8 assists.Over the last 8 games(VDV missed the Wolves game) they have scored an average of 21.5 points between them per game. I think this is a good bet and doesn’t seem to run the rotation risk eg City.

        Why not? Explain your logic.

If Bale and VdV offer the best points returns for midfielders then what is the logic behind it other than that one week when Spurs do badly (but is more than made up for in the other weeks).

just tempted that what made midos more appealing in past seasons is the fact that they get 5pt for their goal (4 for strikers) and collect the bonus 90% of the time.

this year however the bonus system will help the strikers so when they score it wnt be only a matter of 6 pts but more likely 7-8 or 9.

look at the spurs game, with the old bonus system, bale wouldv got the 3 bonus pts for sure but with this system it is different. also adam is a living proof of this as last year a performance like at chelsea (intercepting the ball to create teh 1st goal and a 50yards assist for the 2nd) he wouldv collected the 3 bonus plus an assist and his pt tally wouldv been 8 for this week and everybody wouldv been lining up to get him.
ade rvp suarez up front for me and not likely to change for a while

with the greatest respect, having looked at your team and then looking at your ranking i was shocked, i think the two fulham players have to go, hart can be downgraded, nani agbonlahor and ferguson are also problems

      have u used your wildcard?

fair play on your rank though

all it takes this season to have a very high rank is to have capt rooney at the start and rvp later. that will guarantee an xtra 100-120 pts over the 1st 10gws regardelss of how bad the team is

    aguero v silva

i was planning on downgrading aguero in a cpl of weeks and getting silva in but having thought about it

    aguero has 9 pts more
hes started every PL game when fit, whereas silva has been rested for a couple
hes been sub for the last 2 CL games
he offers an easy route to rooney should rooney hit form

the only plus i can see for silva is that hes cheaper but its only 0.9m

now i wouldnt recommend getting rid of silva if you bought him cheaper but if it was a choice between the two at their current price which one would u go for?

      Hmm, tough one.
Long-term I am looking at getting Aguero in.
But definitely not at the expense of Silva (who I bought at 9.5)
It changes for me each week though, really depends on how the likes of Lampard/VDV/Mata/Young/Nani/Bale and Rooney/Suarez/Adebayor/Dzeko/Hernandez are going.
At the moment Silva is probably the best midfielder to have, with Aguero being the second best striker to have.
      Verdict: Both 🙂

Silva has been rested TWICE in twelve GW's - so the rotation threat is over-exaggerated with him.

Silva doesn't really have a competition for spots in your team (VdV is the only one at that price range, Nani/Mata/etc are all inferior)

Aguero's spot could be taken by Rooney (as you say when he hits form), but more likely RvP.

Another consideration is actually the alternatives at the 6/7m mark if that's the option:
In midfield you have Sess, Walters, Sinclair and then outside bets in Drenthe (overrated), Brunt, Hunt, O'Hara, Ramsey and Cabaye.
At forward you have Agbonlahor (end of the road for him yet?), Sturridge, Bendtner, Ba, Zamora, and Klasnic.

Not really picking one to be honest, but these would be the things I'd consider.

agree on the point about silva not being rested much, but the point is thats twice more than aguero

with citys fixtures i dont really want both in there so its a toss up between the two and if aguero is gauranteed gametime he may just edge it

You can't ignore Aguero's injury record in this analysis (it's as relevant as being rested), specifically minor niggles that are only for 1 GW because you're unlikely to sub him out for that.

Also Aguero is taken off in every game (not once has he done 90 mins).

Hmmm, I have Milner who I planned to get rid of after this gameweek and I had as first choice bench, as he seems to pretty much be in the 1st choice team at City now.

Started 7 of last 9 all comps I think?

Match report suggested he was playing as striker for parts of the game against Newcastle aswell.

BUT I can afford to do Milner to Bale. I would still be tempted to bench Bale this week though, but would get any price rises included (should have done this yesterday).

Current attack line for week would be

    VDV, Walters, Sess, Ramsey
    RVP, Rooney, Bendtner

I just think there is good potential in all of them with 6 out of 7 at home and Wigan being Sunderland opponents (even though they let down last weekend).

Tough, I was in almost the same predicament. I decided to do Milner -> Bale, to get the price rise and then benched Ramsey.

To be honest you're not gonna go too far wrong with any transfer you make, I'm not expecting City to run riot though against their next 3/4 opponents, (excluding Norwich).

on my wildcard.. gotta decide on whether to have
    a)Bale + Turner
    or
    b)Sessegnon + Jones

already have silva vdv and adebayor.. i wanna go with option 2 however if i go with option 1 i can do vdv to nani whenever nani hits form or vdv gets injured.. and end up with silva nani bale at some point.. with option 2 i'd have to forget all about that as bale'll prob be near 9 million in a few weeks

That would actually make me very happy, because everyone has him atm, and would have to re-think, which usually plays out perfect for me 🙂
