The Numbers Game – Opportunity Knocks

Fantasy managers are always looking out for any indicators of a player’s future success. Some, like increased game time or a team’s new attacking philosophy make total sense. Others such as a player’s performance in a single Gameweek or past success against any given opponent are a bit of a stretch. The final category is filled with hunches, feelings and long shots, often fuelled by adult beverages, and usually leading to ill-advised Friday night transfer binges.

One way of predicting goals is to look at the amount of opportunities a player is receiving, and what he’s doing with them. For anyone who has even casually glanced at a game of football (never mind hardened Fantasy managers like yourself), that sounds obvious but it’s a factor which is consistently ignored in favour of ‘form’ and the fact a player had a ‘big’ game the previous week, even if his lone goal came about somewhat fortuitously.

Taking last year‘s data (for forwards only), we see a correlation of around 88% when comparing total shots to goals scored (excluding penalties) and 90% when comparing only shots on target. This can be used as a predictive tool as players who are getting chances, but not putting them away will, on average, start to improve over time assuming they continue to receive the same opportunities in the future.

There are two careful, and important, distinctions to be made though.

I've read some of Chris' articles on his PL Fantasy site and I have to say this one is up to the usual standard - very incisive and cuts through quite a few vague and murky perceptions. You can disagree with stats, and there is never certainty in them, but at least if someone shows you his method like he has, and shows you exactly how he came to his conclusions, you can understand them and maybe even improve his method.

I think the shots on target converted percentage (average 1 out of 2.9) is a pretty strong stat over the long-term and these predictions about who will do better and worst are extremely relevant at this time...

Big point: Rooney and RVP aren't on the "big improvers" or "big fallers" tables. That means they should pretty much keep scoring at the current rate - if you're happy with that, keep/bring them in.

He employs a 'sabre metric' approach. None of this 'think or feel' nonsense. Just pure facts & figures underpinned by stats.

Yep reminds me of sabre metrics - I think one of his finest hours was the "Form Fallacy" article just last week: http://premierleaguefantasy.blogspot.com/2012/01/form-fallacy.html

        Basically,
        1) "form" isn't someone doing well, it's them playing to their potential
        2) a player scoring one GW doesn't significantly increase their chances of scoring in subsequent GW(s)
        3) You want to find the potential of players and work out if they're currently playing to it (in form)

+1 Isacki, great article. The only thing I found a bit puzzling is where Chris mentioned about the service the fwds get and whether or not that has been taken into account. For example, if you look at historical stats for someone like Carroll, he was playing for a different team with a different style of play. His scoring record was possibly better because he had better service from NEW players behnd than he now gets at LIV.

      Do you get my drift?

Can't quite find that bit in the article but I get your point.

All he's doing here is predicting how many more goals will be scored assuming all strikers average a goal from 1 of every 3 shots on target. So if his service is poorer he will probably get less shots on target and this will reduce his predicted goals, thus accounting for poorer service.

See I was thinking of going Rooney RVP up front, because I feel that Aguero isnt making the most of his time up front. This article confirms my belief, nice to know that. Pity about fixtures being the opposite.

      Good work Chris

Mmmm... I was also into Aguero and this dampens it slightly. However, the fixtures are better for City, with more at home, and 12 goals still isn't to be sniffed at. There is also another factor to consider - he is new to the Prem and may keep learning and improving, the same way Silva and Mata have before him.

I don't think so. Henry was 14.0 last time he was in the Prem in 07. I think Ronaldo was 14.0 too (or higher) wasn't he?

No offence to Chris but I find this a bit too confusing, maybe it's because I've been sat in front a computer screen all day and my brain is fried though. What is meant by current pace and revised pace, is it goals per shot taken or something?

Current pace is how many goals they'd score in the rest of the season at the current goals per game. Revised pace is how many goals they'd score in the rest of the season if they scored ~1/3 of their shots on target.

I dont read it that way. I think the revised pace is based on their historical rate an individual player has converted shots to goals and the 1/3 was only an example, hence my point about Carroll above,

I checked it, here's the quote:

"First we derive the forecast number of shots (both total and on target) the player will generate over the remainder of the year, based on his shots per minute rate. Using the average rate at which shots are converted (every 6 total shots and every 3 on target) we can then estimate how many goals a player might score, if they can revert to these average rates for the rest of the season."

So they're using the same average rate for all players - set to those two figures right there (1/6 total shots, 1/3 shots on target). They take the average of the two predictions. They have also multiplied it by the proportion of the remaining season they'll be available to play.

You can go through the figures a bit and it works out.

Pardew has been talking about Ben Arfa being better on the wing despite the fact that he prefers playing in the hole behind the front man. Don't know if this will influence your decision. Cabaye probably more solid but Barfa could be an explosive scorer. I would go Cabaye personally, Barfa lacks a bit of physicality for tough top flight games IMO. Hence why he did well in France and his FA cup goal was against poor opposition

he wants to be in the hole, and pardew has previously said that's where he see's him playing (before the blackburn game), but he's been frustrating when he plays there (tries to do 'too much'). He looked a different player when pushed wide against blackburn and with obertan being so dissapointing, that's why i think he could share gametime with obertan.

you're right about cabaye being the solid choice and barfa being the explosive punt.

Think Barfa may get more gametime at homke and against weaker opposition.

Interesting article, but to add to this data, you must also remember that all of these players aren't playing in the same teams, structures, or leagues as they used to. Averages are great when comparing apples to apples. In some instances I would agree with you - Suarez should be producing much more and I reckon he will once he comes back, but in no way do I expect Aguero to slow down, especially now that the fixtures look more promising. Aguero on a team like Man City is much more dangerous than Aguero on Atletico Madrid for obvious reasons. Rodallega stats look very different on a Wigan team with N'Zogbia and playing a completely different formation. I would agree that Sturridge will slow down significantly. There are games that I dont even see him on the field and he ends up scoring some flaky goal. Torres just needs more supply and needs to take on defenders more often and shoot - if he bagged a couple of those easy ones, his numbers would look significantly different, as would his playing time.

This is a great article that draws attention to a very useful tool for spotting breakouts but you have to analyse the results with care.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics; and I say that as an enthusiastic stathead!

Take Sturridge: - 9 goals in 21 shots on target for Bolton at age 21 compared to 8 goals in 20 shots on target for Chelsea at age 22? I reckon there is no "revert to the norm" going to happen; in fact I think he'll get even better for the next half season.

But that's just an example, the principle behind the comparison is still valid: I'm buying high on Suarez when he returns, especially with Stevie G controlling midfield.

I'm not "keeping" Graham, I'm adding him in as part of my wc - seemed good value at 4.7 to sit on my bench most of the time but potentially do ok if ever called upon.

I guess the question I'm asking really is; is it worth carrying so many 4.x players in order to be able to afford Bale, Nani, Silva, Aguero and RvP, or should I think about reducing these five to four/three to spend the money upgrading from 4.x players elsewhere to more "mid-range" options?

Yes, I'm bigging up Wellbeck - I reckon his style of play will cause problems for Bolton's slow, ageing defence.

Berby hasn't the pace to trouble them which Wellbeck has. But who knows with Sir Alex - he might fancy Hernandez instead of Wellbeck.

At the moment, Wellbeck is in my team but that could change if I revert to Sturridge by tomorrow's deadline.
