Carling Victory Postpones Merseyside Clash

While the Anfield faithful celebrate their Carling Cup semi-final victory over Man City, the minds of Fantasy football managers have already moved on to more pressing matters.

Following on from their 3-2 aggregate win this evening, we have another blank fixture looming, with the promise of a double Gameweek to come.

Prior to this evening, Liverpool were set to play host to rivals Everton in Gameweek 26, on Saturday February 25. However, with a trip to Wembley to face Cardiff in the final on the Sunday now secured, this league fixture will be postponed.

As a result, Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures (wlv, TOT, mun, blank, ARS) tell a fairly grim tale, while their Merseyside rivals have an equally unappealing slate ahead of them (MCY wig, CHE, blank, qpr).

The flipside of this, of course, is that this fixture will need to be rearranged and will undoubtedly, at some point, give both of these teams a double Gameweek. It’s now down to the Premier League to find the most appropriate date to reschedule the clash.

For now, we can only really speculate when the double Gameweek will fall. With both sides uninvolved in European competitions, there will certainly be many midweek slots available. We will, of course, share the news of the rescheduled fixture as soon as word breaks.

While the Carling Cup has made the impact on the Merseyside, the FA Cup will likely be the major factor behind all impending double Gameweeks this season. With such a tight schedule ahead of the European Championship, fixture congestion awaits.

Every FA Cup game from the quarter-finals, through to the Wembley showpiece, will take place on a Premier League weekend. The last eight of the competition will be contested in Gameweek 29, so we can expect plenty more rescheduling and double Gameweeks to arrive for the sides who make it through the next two rounds and beyond.

Which one to bench this week: Enrique (wol), Senderos (WBA) or Sturridge (swa)?

Cheers, that's what I have it on currently. Not really. Current team:

        Vorm (Al-Habsi)
        Enrique, BAE, Jones
        Sess, Nani, Silva, Bale
        RVP, Ade, Sturridge
        Bench: Senderos, Naylor, Moses

Nani will probably become Valencia with my FT so the only other one is Jones if his name isn't in the starting lineup when it comes out.

Liverpool haven't been looking too strong defensively of late. I have the same 3 players and am only playing Senderos.

Bold move! Yeah, that was my thinking re. the Liverpool defence. Possible backlash due to the Bolton game though?

If you had to play one other would it be Enrique or Sturridge?

Sturridge, though I just transferred him out. Wolves go on the attack at home, should be a few goals. Enrique's involvement on the attacking front unlikely.

Yes, though WBA are underrated with a decent strike force. Fulham's defence isn't all it's cracked up to be. I'd play Sturridge ahead of both.

I would love it, LOVE IT, if we finish ahead of Liverpool this year. Even more so if it means that we get into Europe and they don't. This is after Carroll and Enrique left us because Liverpool had more ambition!!

If can honestly say, that the only Liverpool players that I would consider for the newcastle first 11 would be Enrique and Suarez. And that is only because we don't know enough about Santon and Cisse, who could potentially be better.

I'm sure that liverpool fans will argue for reina and agger, but I would take Krul and Saylor over them any day!

What is hilarious, is that we got our entire first 11, for 10 million LESS than Liverpool paid for Carroll + Downing. DOH!!

Carrol was awesome for us last season. But that was half a season!! He would have had to have performed consistently at that level for at least a couple of seasons, before being worth anything like that money. 35 mill is a lot to spend on potential. Especially somebody who loves a beer and a fight as much as he does!

Yeah more to the point Drenthe in any team that would start him every week (anyone up to about 7th place) would have been a fantasy prospect.

I used to respect Moyes for doing lots with a small budget, unfortunately seeing him consistently play the most negative side possible has led me to hope that hits him in the face.

Santon due to higher PPI & more chance of bonus - Problem is not nailed on, we'll know by next week after the Fulham drubbing.
Williamson due to more nailed on.
Simpson... no idea why he's nailed on. If they want to keep Santon & Raylor in team he could make way.

Simpson's nailed on because he's been one of the most consistent fullbacks this season in one of the best defences in the league, despite the fact that Ryan Taylor the very slow and incompetent defender has been in that same defensive line all due of his dead ball ability and early season injuries to others.

Pretty much as good as any other options out there right now. I'm considering doubling City at the back too.

You probably already know about Spurs/Man U fixtures but yeah I'd be wary of having too many of them right now. Problem is the lack of value the upper-mid and elite strikers are providing right now, which makes Ade still a good pick. I'd do one of Ade or Welbeck to Ba when he's back. I also marginally prefer Bobby Z to Welbeck; he's involved in more of his side's goals.

I don't think Szczesny is worth the money; consider Vorm, Krul, Schwarzer. Don't understand the love of Stoke; unreliable imo, but Shotton is oop so not the worst pick. I know you don't like the Fulham defence but I would look at one of them or Newcastle.

Thanks, I have 0.5 in the bank. Santon's in my thoughts for Shotton, as is Mr Ba for Welbeck once I see him play again.

It could all get a bit messy depending who stays in the FA Cup.

Sticking with Szczesny, I'm being stubborn about that!

Isacki. You're a fellow barfa fan. I was all set on rotating him with McClean on "my wife's team" wildcard. The demba news throws a bit of a spanner in the works into that. But as I mentioned earlier, I think he might be good to go when Tiote gets back. Who do you think that I should get to rotate with McClean until the Barfa situation becomes clearer? Or just gamble on him anyway? Anyone?

Food for thought when choosing your WC defence; I've found it very helpful indeed:

    http://www.soccerbythenumbers.com/2012/01/transfer-window-benchmarking-ii.html

The graph shows why I'm considering doubling up on City, why I dislike Stoke's defence and why Swansea are awesome.

Interesting to see that Stoke are 8th in the league, but with a Goal Difference of -10!!

Indeed. The graph suggests clean sheets will be hard to come by because although they concede a below average number of shots, when they do concede them they are more likely to result in a goal, so they only need to concede a few shots to concede a goal.

This is probably due to either poor goalkeeping (see Sorro vs WBA last weekend) or allowing more clear cut chances like one-on-ones, or a combination of both. Either way, not ideal for a defender in your team, particularly the GK who won't get as many save points.

I think I would go with Brown and Enrique with Kelly first sub. Toss up between Enrique and Kelly though.

can you give me some of your reasoning mate?

thinking I should bench simpson but yet he is playing blackburn without the yak... would think enrique but they haven't been keeping too many cleanies recently... sunderland have been playing well but norwich could score as they've only been shut out 4 times this season (west brom, united, spurs, chelsea) and then kelly has west brom so i would think him but fulham haven't kept a cleansheet in the league since december 17 vs bolton....

gahh this is doing my head in! glad im settled on playing richards though

WC active. Question to others in same boat, or who still have it.

How will who's left in the FA Cup affect your WC? After this weekend at least 10 top flight teams will be left in.

I can see myself making wholesale changes, no chance I'm keeping 10-12 players who may all be missing for a week. Load up for DGWs, then shift them for the missing games. Those with the original WC could make a lot of ground up due to this. Seeing as City are out, having 3 is a must based on this.

And then I thought... their opponents won't be playing, regardless of if they're in or out of the cup.

Rethink: Load up on teams out of the cup who are due to play teams also out of the cup. Frisking fixtures article will be nice and confusing for this.

think it might make the most sense to just sit back and wait to see what happens. so at least 10 teams from the epl could be left but that number could be less too. and we dont know when the games will be rescheduled to or anything so i think its best to just sit back and wait for more information for now

In addition to what the rest have said. It depends on price, but probably not as Ba is likely to still be on pens, and he is expected to be the further forward of the two.
