Scout Reports

Scout Report- Taye Taiwo

Mark Hughes’s first move in the January transfer window has seen QPR snap up Taye Taiwo on loan from AC Milan. The left-back arrives at Loftus Road until the end of the season and looks set to boost the London outfit’s quest for survival over the next few months, bringing a much-needed experience to Rangers’ defence.

Tightening up at the back is a fundamental aspect of Hughes’ approach; last season his Fulham side had the joint-fourth best defence in the league, with just 43 goals conceded, and given that QPR have already shipped 37, it’s an issue that requires immediate address.

With Taiwo having struggled to cement a first-team place for the Serie A champions since his summer move from Marseille, the loan certainly suits both parties. Teaming up with Hughes, then, clearly affords Taiwo the opportunity of regular football and a chance to kick-start his career after the disappointing San Siro experience. It’s an opportunity that the defender clearly relishes:

I’m very grateful to Mark Hughes for bringing me here. It is always nice for a player when you know the manager wants you and I will repay his faith in me. I can’t wait to play for the club. I know only hard work, good performance, dedication, and passion will connect me with the fans but I’m prepared. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead and I’m prepared to give my all to the QPR cause.

The Statistics

After a couple of campaigns as a teenager in his homeland, Taiwo made his name at Marseille, signing for the French side as a twenty year old back in 2004-05. Over seven seasons for the Ligue 1 giants, he made 192 league appearances, scoring 17 goals and providing 16 assists- clearly he offers a lot more than your average full-back.

Last term was his most successful at club level; Taiwo returned 4 goals and 6 assists in twenty-nine starts as Didier Deschamps’ side finished second behind Lille in the chase for the title. A Bosman move to Milan has proved a major letdown, though. Taiwo made just 4 league appearances in his debut season for Massimo Allegri’s side, falling behind both Luca Antonini and Gianluca Zambrotta in the pecking order for the left-back role.

Taiwo offers plenty of top-class experience, too, having played more than 50 times in all European competitions, and has represented his country on 48 occasions, finding the net 5 times.

The Prospects

The move certainly seems to spell bad news for both Armand Traore and Clint Hill. Having started twelve and nine times respectively at left-back, the pair look set to take a back seat in light of Taiwo’s arrival. Hughes was clearly delighted to acquire the Nigerian’s services and, from his glowing assessment of the player, it’s obvious that Taiwo looks set to be an integral part of QPR’s first XI from now until May:

I have known of him for a long time and admired him from afar. To get him now is a fantastic coup and a real statement of intent that we can attract the quality of player that he is. I am looking forward to working with him.

Backed by the cash of club owner Tony Fernandes, Hughes has wasted little time in strengthening his defence further; Nedum Onouha has completed a moved from Man City earlier today, as the new manager continues to restructure his back line. With a few days left of the transfer window, there’s still plenty time to wheel and deal and bring a couple more faces to Loftus Road.

So far, Hughes has got off to a decent start; a narrow defeat at Newcastle was followed by a 3-1 home win over Wigan last weekend, as he picked up three points in his first game at Loftus Road. Given QPR had chalked up one victory in front of their own fans under Neil Warnock – a 1-0 triumph over nine-man Chelsea- the omens look good and suggest their Fantasy assets could be set for reassessment in light of the new manager’s arrival.

Renowned for his set-piece ability and shooting from distance (check out the YouTube link below), Taiwo will offer plenty threat going forward, in addition to strengthening the back-four. He’s still not available in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a starting price of around 4.5 to 5.0 looks likely- Clint Hill came in at 4.5 and was the costliest QPR defender prior to the start of the season.

With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon (avl, WOL, bla, FUL, EVE, bol), the London outfit have the strongest schedule of any team over the next six gameweeks. As Hughes looks to engineer a climb away from the drop zone, his new left-back looks to have the perfect opportunity to make an instant impact in his new surroundings.

i reckon cisse could be to ba what hernandez is to rooney. so basically takes points off him, without really setting up any for him in return

It's very very likely that Ba's output will be smaller with another poacher like Cisse in the side imo. Chances are that Newcastle will score more goals but that Ba will score a lesser % of them as Cisse will score some and neither of those two players excel in assisting.

Makes sense, but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose. I'm keeping a fairly open mind about it, obviously hope it will be Shearer/Ferdinand MkII, but hoping its not a Maric / Dahl Tomasson combo.

Yeah, as I like to say I'm rather one week late on a bandwagon then five weeks early.

Probably getting Ba as soon as I can and if Cisse slots right in I'll have a quick punt on both. There have been partnerships of strikers who are mainly finishers that have worked, so why not.

    Hey Guys

Help needed for this week please:

    Vorm
    Evans Senderos Richards
    Valencia Dempsey(c) Silva Bale
    RVP(vc) Roonpig Fletcher

    Bench: McClean Santon Shotton

I’m really not too sure on who to bench this week. It’s got to be out of Fletcher or McClean. I benched McClean last week and that bit me on my backside. Also who to (c)?? Its on Dempsey at the mo, but I’ll probably chicken out by the deadline and stick it back on RVP.

    Thoughts and suggestions welcome…..

Oh and I still have 1 FT left, was thinking of saving it for next week and bring Aguero and Kompany in for Richards and Roonpig. Good move?

    Many Thanks

Watching Ben Foster talk about the Peter Crouch eye 'poke'. Doesn't seem too fussed about it, really bothers me that people use the "Peter Crouch is actually a really nice guy" excuse when talking about stuff like that. Being a nice guy doesn't excuse the fact of what you do.

    Current team for this GW:

    Stockdale (Vorm)
Richards - Skrtel - BAE (Santon - Caulker)
    Silva - Bale - Dempsey - Sessegnon (Reo-Coker)
    RVP - Aguero - Fletcher

    1 FT, 0.4 in bank

Of course that doesn't mean he won't suffer points-wise.

Much as I have an (inexplicable) soft spot for Shola and admire the work ethic and occasional flash of talent from Best I'm hoping Cisse is an altogether different prospect and can take some of the burden off Ba.

I am making these two transfers next week for free. Gonna sit tight this week. Everton are decent at home, Aguero has poor record away. Pool and Utd should score a couple each this week. If anything i would do the Gerrard - Silva switch and give the Roonster another go.

Same.. But most of the bandwagons on here for me become a massive let down!

But this isn't even so much a bandwagon for me, i was planning on bringing in a QPR defender anyway, so one at 4.5 + good fixtures = a smart decision, not jumping on a bandwagon at all 😉

Also not very glamorous - Scott Sutter of Young Boys Bern has left the club's training camp in Spain to have a trial with Blackburn with a view to signing for the club. He's only second-choice right-back at YB under Christian Gross and is homesick for England. Wouldn't be an automatic first choice for Blackburn on current form, though other English clubs are apparently interested.

So, I am currently at this point in my WC-vaganza. And also doing a slight intro. The dilemma is 8 "solid" players, or 7+1 "cheapo".

    Lindegaard, Vorm
    Kompany, Cahill, Brown, Senderos, Simpson/Santon/Williamson
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sess, Valencia-OR-McClean
    RVP, Ba, Dzeko-OR-Aguero

There are two options basically. And REMEMBER that in option A, there is no clear cut substitute.
    a) Valencia+Dzeko
    b) McClean+Aguero+0.5 to upgrade stuff

BBC - "Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is looking forward to welcoming back Demba Ba and new signing Papiss Demba Cisse following Senegal's exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. He said: "Blackburn on Wednesday? That's probably tight, but we might try to get them back for that. They are two great players and you want your best players in and around your team."

My gut feeling would be yes, HH. McClean is terrific value for the output he is producing so far.

I'm looking at McClean only on next week's wc.

    Evans, Senderos, Richards,
    Bale, Sess, Dempsey, Silva,
    Fletcher, RVP, Roo

    Vorm, Enrique, Williamson, Walters

You'd ideally be rotating him with Fulham or Villa so I'd imagine you can bench him and he has 10 days to get up to fitness then.

Needed Ba to drop once more so l could afford him, so I'll have to fund it but where do I get the extra 0.1 from.

    Vorm, Lindegaard
    Richards, Raylor, Huth, Senderos, Evans
    Silva, Sess, Dempsey, Dyer, Bale
    RVP, Aguero, Keane

    Do I

    A. Dyer > McClean (0.3)
    B. Dyer > Surman (0.4)
    C. Raylor > Santon (0.5)
    D. Raylor > Simpson (0.3)
