Dugout Discussion

Sunday Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion opens this afternoon, hoping for a similar goal glut witnessed in yesterday’s edition. We’ve two games to pour over, with all four clubs with something to play for. Later we’ll be at White Hart Lane where Tottenham continue to chase Champions League qualification against relegation fighting Blackburn. Before that there’s a West London derby at Stamford Bridge, between Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers…

Chelsea XI: Cech, Ferreira, Bosingwa, Terry, Cole, Mata, Essien, Lampard, Sturridge, Torres, Kalou.

QPR: Kenny, Onuoha, Ferdinand, Hill, Taiwo, Mackie, Barton, Derry, Buzsaky, Cisse, Zamora.

As expected, Roberto Di Matteo has tinkered with his line-up ahead of of a huge night in Munich, but somewhat surprisingly there are still starts for the likes of Juan Mata and Frank Lampard.

The visitors name an attacking line-up, with Djibril Cisse partnering Bobby Zamora up front.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom is open – with moderators will be on hand to resolve any issues – and can be accessed right here.

Think I'll come back to this next week. Was going to shift out Rooney and RVP for Jelavic and Torres, instead just got Jelavic and no Torres. Hopefully Spurs do the business but still, disappointed with myself for bottling the Torres switch.

        I disagree.

He gave the ball to Sturridge, who then kicked it off the defender and got it back, then scored. I haven't seen the rule that says that should be Mata's assist.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong btw.

"Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

The defender was inside the box. No opposing player touched the ball outside the penalty area.

The situation is analogous the the one when a player shoots, goalkeeper saves, and the same player scores. In such cases assist are given.

I agree with you. The rules don't:

Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball OUTSIDE the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In my opinion, you're misinterpreting this, as the touch from the defender (which was inside the box) came from Sturridge playing the ball, not Mata.
