Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Czech Republic

With Roy Hodgson already coming under fire for his Euro 2012 squad selection, it seems a perfectly topical time to get our coverage for next month’s tournament underway. We’re rolling out preview articles on all 16 participants, starting with our assessment of the Czech Republic…

The Czechs kick off their Group A campaign with a 7.45pm match against Russia on Friday June 8, the opening day of the tournament. Four days later, Michal Bilek’s men then pit their wits against Greece in the early kick-off at 5pm, before facing co-hosts Poland in their final group game on Saturday June 16 at 7.45pm.

The most open group of all, there’s no real stand-out certainties amongst the contenders, with any of the four looking capable of progressing to the knock-out stage. Greece were the most impressive qualifiers, finishing unbeaten and top of a six-team group that included Croatia. Russia also led the way over Republic of Ireland in their group, losing just once over 10 games, while Poland will be hoping their home backing can spur them on to at least the final eight.

The Road to Qualification

Bilek’s side were handed the most unenviable task of all in qualifying, drawn alongside defending champions Spain in a five-team group. While their record includes three losses from eight games, they were beaten home and away by Vicente Del Bosque’s side, in addition to a surprise defeat in their opening home clash with Lithuania. They managed just three clean sheets – picked up home and away against Liechtenstein and at home to Scotland – and scored 12 goals, conceding eight. Placed second in the group, they squared up to Montenegro in the play-offs and cruised through 3-0 on aggregate.

Most Appearances: Kadlec (10), Cech, Hubnik, Rosicky & Plasil (9)

Top Scorers: Kadlec (4), Rezek & Plasil (2)

Top Assists: Rosicky (6)

The Likely Lads

There’s nothing quite like a penalty-taking defender to whet the appetite. Michal Kadlec fits the bill here, having finished qualifying as top scorer with four goals – three of those as a result of converted spot-kicks. The Bayer Leverkusen man is the left-back in Bilek’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and, priced at 5.5 in the McDonalds Euro 2012 game, is 0.5 dearer than any other member of the Czech’s backline. He offers a decent creative streak, too, finishing the recent Bundesliga campaign with four assists to his name.

Tomas Rosicky is the main creator. Playing in the hole behind a lone forward or in a deeper central midfield role, the Arsenal man picked up six assists over his nine appearances during qualifying and is also on free-kicks. His McDonalds price of 7.0 is the joint-costliest in the squad, though he arrives in strong form, with three assists in his last five for Arsenal. If injury should blight Rosicky’s game time, it’s worth noting that Bilek has recently revealed Daniel Kolar is his second-choice playmaker.

While he failed to impress in the qualifiers with just a single goal from seven appearances, Milan Baros looks set to lead the line. Priced at 7.0 in the McDonalds game, his top-level experience should see him get the nod over the likes of David Lafata, though the latter is clearly the player in form, having scored 25 goals in 27 games for Czech side Jablonec this past season.

Cheeky Punt

Roman Hubnik comes in at just 4.5 in the McDonalds game, 0.5 cheaper than his central defensive partner Tomas Sivok. Hubnik missed just one game over the qualifiers – through suspension – and also grabbed a goal. Sivok, however, has the greater attacking potential of the pair; his record of six goals in 40 games for Besiktas in 2011/12 attests to that. With an extra point for every 5 recovered balls in the McDonalds game, the centre halves could well prosper, with Hubnik offering the best value route into the Czech’s backline. Petr Cech, at 5.0, is the most popular keeper in the game so far, with over 33% ownership, while Hubnik has been snapped up by just 0.7% in comparison.

Jaroslav Plasil looks to be on corner kicks and is one of his side’s most trusted lieutenants. Playing all but one of the qualifying matches, he scored twice and comes in at 6.5. Although he plies his trade as a central midfielder for Bordeaux, Plasil is likely to feature wide right for the Czechs and could be a decent differential – he currently has just 1.2% ownership compared to Rosicky’s 24.8%. Jan Rezek is likely to play on the left of the attacking midfield three but has been classified as a forward in McDonalds – despite his two goals in five appearances and price of 6.0, Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear as a result.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yes, very happy, not ecstatic though, would have loved top 1k and was about 400 places short of our ML highest ever finish. But all in all a great year, I presume you are also delighted with your end to the season, you had a monumental finish in fairness.

Liverpool principal owner John Henry: "Kenny will always be more than a championship winning manager, more than a championship winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club.

"He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club. He has always put the club and its supporters first. Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield.

"Our job now is to identify and recruit the right person to take this club forward and build on the strong foundations put in place during the last 18 months."

Surely somebody advised Henry that repeatedly using the term 'Championship' was not the best choice of words? Unless of course that's what he actually thought?

Man Utd need 2 midfielders, 1 left-back and a striker this season IMO. I doubt if Fergie will buy 4 players. Basically, there is no mf at MU who could orchestrate the midfield and be a pure playmaker and this is hurting us bad I think.

    Evening guys.

Could not believe my eyes when I saw Carroll, Downing, Defoe and Ox in the England squad. Surely Sturridge should have picked over Defoe or Downing and Crouch over Caroll. Just look at their stats. Also Lennon was better than Ox.

    What do you think?

I think Sturridge is more versatile as Defoe hence he should have been picked IMO. Downing is a mystery (probably 'cause he play for Liverpool and he managed the club even though Downing wasn't there). Carroll does work hard but can he score though and be consistent?

Downing had an excellent pass rate at Villa. Whilst he's not had a great season I think he's got potential and needs experience. I thought the squad is a decent mix of old and new from a very limited range of options.

Overall I don't think it's a bad squad and Roy will drill them well but it's not anywhere near the best available one either.

Richards should be in ahead of Jones and 2 of Jagielka, Johnson, Lennon should be there over Downing and Oxlade-Chamberlain. (not sure we have enough defenders in there)

Sturridge hasn't featured a lot under RDM and not really performed recently so I can understand that one. Ox is the big mistake for me, he's hardly played for Arsenal at all never mind being in the England squad, doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the squad for me.

True Richards does seem to have picked up a lot of knocks this season. But I'd have another defender in there anyway. Can you call up replacements during the tournament or not? He's a much better player atm than Jones who could be good but is seriously overrated and I'd be very worried if we had him playing (especially if he had to play CB).

True but he's out of form. Depends on system also, want us to play a 4231 but with the squad selected 442 seems more possible than I thought.

Jones can play as a decnt DM and is more versatile than Micah (not as good as him in RB position yet). Versatility is the key I think.

4231 is the only way for England to challenge and actually get through the group IMO. 442 will not work with these players. Need two DM for sure in the formation.

From the squad picked I hope we play something like this

              Hart
              Johnson Terry Lescott Cole
              Barry Parker
              Walcott Gerrard Young
              Wellbeck (Rooney)

But with 4 strikers including Defoe and Carroll I'm worried we might end up ditching Barry and playing another man up top which I think wouldn't work against the likes of Germany, France and Spain.

When Ox came on for Arsenal in most of the games every time he basically changed the match. And when he started he played very well. Against big clubs he can play very well, AC Milan comes to mind. He rarely loses the ball. Its a bit far to say he doesnt deserve to be anywhere near the squad.

Bit of an overstatement of his role in changing games there I think. He's had less than 10 PL/CL starts. Personally I think he'd benefit more from going to the Olympics instead, he's clearly a talent but we shouldn't rush him and he's not ready for a big tournament role yet imo.

Haha maybe if he had another season behind him in the PL. After the Euros he should probs start to be introduced into the squad for friendlies as long as he's getting games at club level.

You think he'll get more starts for Arsenal next season even with Podolski coming in? Loan move could be beneficial?

          no it appears not.

Would also not pick Ronaldo, he tends to underperform for Portugal who are a shadow of their former selves, and have a very tough group. He is not worth 11 million, when you can get RvP for the same price, or Nani, Robben, Benzema or Ibra for less.

Also, keep your eye on Germany friendlies, chance that Klose starts ahead of Gomez. Also, VdV apparently plays much deeper for Holland than he does for Spurs (due to the presence of Wesley) maybe get Young instead, and I looked at Eriksen, then saw his fixtures and looked elsewhere.

Don't know if Mcgeady fit or not but Duff is a way better option, Mcgeady has been awful for us lately and McClean is likely to get 30 min cameos if things are going bad, if he performs i'd expect him to start 3rd game. Trap VERY RARELY changes his 11 though so tread carefully, Duff if you are thinking of anyone imo.

i assume hes fit as i havnt heard of any injuries hes carrying, difficult to know as trappatoni thinks mcclean can play left or right wing so he may get 20 mins game time in some games,so either player may not play 90 mins in any given game

    Probably been posted before but:

An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent. If the pass takes a small deflection which does not change the direction of the ball, it will still be given. No assists are awarded for own goals or penalties.

It seems that it'll be harder than in FPL to get assists, meaning goalscorers are probably more important...

Yep, that's why the midfielders have less value......

Ozil was an option but I think I will give him a miss. You get 1 for winning a penalty so Young can stay in my team. Might just get a team of penalty takers...!

Would go for a few of the midfielders from the teams playing 4-2-3-1, they offer much more going forward, so definitely keep Young.

Just about to pick the 'likely XI' for each team

    Starting with Czech Republic (4-2-3-1):

Čech; Pospěch, Hubník, Sivok, Kadlec; Hübschman, Pilař; Plašil, Rosický, Rezek; Baros.

    Visual View:
    ---------------------------------------------------- Čech ---------------------------------------------------------------

    ----------- Pospěch ------------ Hubník ---------------- Sivok ----------------------- Kadlec----------------

    --------------------------------- Hübschman ---------------- Pilař -------------------------------------------------

    ----------------- Plašil -------------------------- Rosický ------------------------ Rezek ------------------------

    ---------------------------------------------------- Baros -------------------------------------------------------------

A few extra little lines in there, no harm done 😉

People will understand what you mean if you do it without the lines 😛

          Cech
          Pospech, Hubnik, Sivok, Kadlec
          Hubschman, Pilar
          Plasil, Rosicky, Rezek
          Baros

          See? 4-2-3-1

No that Dalglish is gone, if we get the right manager, we'll race back into the top 4. Our team is good enough, just a decent finisher like Defoe and we'll sustain top 4 season in and out.
