Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Portugal

Our series of articles on next month’s Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine continues with a final look at Group B. This time round, it’s Portugal who come under the microscope:

Paulo Bento’s men have the toughest of openers, getting their campaign underway against much-fancied Germany on Saturday June 9 at 7.45pm. Next up, it’s a showdown with Denmark on Wednesday June 13 at the earlier time of 5pm, before Portugal face up to Holland in their final match, at 7.45pm on Sunday June 17.

There’s no doubt that Portugal have a tricky task ahead if they are to make it past the group stages. Germany ran away with their qualifying group, racking up 34 goals and winning all of their 10 matches, leaving Turkey trailing by a massive 13 points. Holland were another free-scoring side, finding the net 37 times and winning nine of their 10 clashes, while Portugal finished behind Denmark in their qualifying group, though managed to inflict the Danes’ only defeat in eight matches in a 3-1 home win.

The Road to Qualification

Portugal didn’t make it easy for themselves. Finishing second in their group after a draw with Cyprus and losses to Norway and Denmark, Bento’s side were poor defensively – just two clean sheets accrued over eight games, with 12 goals conceded. A 6-2 play-off win over Bosnia Herzegovina highlighted their attacking prowess, though; Portugal found the net 21 times in the group stages and, play-off win inclusive, scored three or more goals in six of their 10 games overall.

Most Appearances: Nani & Meireles (10), Moutinho (9), Postiga, Alves, Pereira & Ronaldo (8)

Top Goalscorer: Ronaldo (7), Nani & Postiga (5)

Top Assists: Nani (4), Ronaldo (3)

The Likely Lads

If there’s anyone who’s likely to help his country upset the odds and progress past the group stages, it has to be Cristiano Ronaldo. With seven goals and three assists in just eight qualifying appearances, his contribution will be vital as Bento’s side look to battle past Germany and Holland for a place in the last eight. Priced at 11.0 in the McDonalds game and classified as a forward, though, the Real Madrid man takes up a substantial slice of Fantasy managers’ budgets and, with plenty of strong, mid-price frontline alternatives to choose from, many may overlook Ronaldo in order to achieve a better squad balance. With an ownership of 31.4% at present, though, he is the fourth most popular outfield player in the game thus far.

A look at Nani’s qualifying stats suggest he could be a viable alternative to his fellow winger. Granted, he doesn’t have free-kicks or penalties to fall back on like Ronaldo but the United man still managed to grab five goals and four assists over his 10 appearances. As part of the Portuguese frontline in a 4-3-3, Nani is also classified as a forward but is far more budget friendly than Ronaldo, coming in at just 8.5 in comparison. That price difference could appeal to Fantasy managers who are perhaps willing to invest in Portugal without going overboard with their spending and, with just 3.5% ownership in the McDonalds game, Nani is a definite differential to consider.

Raul Meireles is one of the first names on Bento’s team sheet, appearing in every one of Portugal’s qualifiers. Along with Joao Moutinho, he is likely to be one of the two more attack-minded central midfielders, with Miguel Veloso sitting in front of the back-four. While both Meireles and Moutinho are priced at 7.5, the Chelsea man proved the greater goal threat in qualifying, grabbing a couple of goals, and, crucially, also has corner-kicks as part of his repertoire; with Nani and Ronaldo on the pitch, Meireles and Veloso took all of Portugal’s corners in the 6-2 home play-off win over Bosnia Herzegovina between them.

Cheeky Punt

Helder Postiga looks the man most likely to lead the line for Bento’s side. While there’s an argument for the inclusion of Hugo Almeida as the lone forward, Postiga certainly seems to have his manager’s backing, making eight appearances over the qualifying matches. Portugal will need to find goals if they are to stand a chance of progressing and, while Postiga comes in at the same price as Nani, at 8.5, his minimal 0.4% ownership may well prove dividend for those Fantasy managers looking for a real flutter. With five goals in qualifying, he’s more than capable of finding the net.

It’s difficult to be overly-enthused with regards to Portugal’s defensive options. Given the offensive potential of both Germany and Holland, clean sheets look highly unlikely, while Denmark scored both home and away against Bento’s side in qualifying. Although Bruno Alves carries the greatest goal threat from the back, a price tag of 7.0 in the McDonalds game looks a little steep – keeper Rui Patricio costs 5.5 in comparison and is set for a busy time ahead, with plenty save points likely to be picked up over his group matches. It’s a risk, no doubt, but investing any more budget in the Portuguese backline is difficult to justify.

    Some questions for the answering...

Best 4m defender? Best 5m midfielder?

    Then, this one:

Who's the best Croat to have? Modric's got the name, Mandzukic's got the OOP, but Srna (despite being a wing-back classed as a mid) still has the best stats...plus freekicks, penos and corners.

I'm currently going with Srna, but I'm open to perversion...

In other news, Iniesta...Great player, but is he worth the wonga?

Well I'm not sleeping, and I can reply to you. Well Srna seems a good choice in the MID for Croatia, Iniesta based on name and on his "big game" performances is a good choice at 9.5m. I would say if your budget fits well, get Iniesta. In these big games against Italy e.g he can be the deciding factor...

I had Iniesta in my team for a bunch of time, but then my ears pricked up by all this Nasri talk...It also allowed me to get in Alba. Are there any injury concerns surrounding Iniesta? He seemed in-and-out of the Barca team this season...

Well yes Iniesta did have an injury towards the end of the campaign after being knocked out by Chelsea in UCL. He however recovered and seems to be fit. Keep your eyes open for the Copa Del Rey final this Saturday and he should lineup up to play. A great buy imo, but Nasri too is a fine choice and he usually performs better for France than at club level. 8.5 Nasri, if you're on a tight budget, sure good bet!

Based on form, fixtures and value for money, Jelavic has got to be worth the risk.

I really like the team, just make sure you start Piszczek & K Pap, then use your manager subs.

    Alreet lads

I was listening to the times podcast this week, and was pleasantly surprised to here cabaye and tiote level on points to partner yaya toure in the centre of the midfield. To be honest, I'm not sure if I would have either in the overall team of the season. Tiote had a quiet start due to ramadan, and missed a third of the season through injury and the african nations. Cabeye was great at the start of the season, and awesome for the run in, but was really quiet for the middle third. I would say however that as a midfield pairing they are easily in the top 3 best in the league (with man city and spurs). Let's hope we can keep them together for next season!

It was also nice to see Colllochini unopposed as Kompany's partner in the defence.

Reports are suggesting that siggie is due to sign a permanent deal with swansea. That should be good news for us. If he moved to a bigger club I could see him being less effective and more expensive than if he stays at swansea. What price would you be happy to pay for him next season? I reckon he could be worth around 8 mill.

someone was asking if I'd pay 8 million when I posted this last night. i said yes as he delivered returns akin to a 8-10m mid. He was a ridiculous bargain last season. I expect him to br 6.5ish this time around.

I agree, just repeating what was asked to me. I'd happily pay 10 for him. But I think given he started at 5 million last season and didn't get over 6, I can see him being 6.5 and 8, think Swans will be in the mid-priced bracket this season, with Siggy and Vorm at the high end.

Def closer to 8 than 6.5m. Sinclair came in at 6m and Taraabt at 6.5m if I recall. Moses prob would be around the 6m-6.5m mark. Dempsey kicked off at 8.5m. I think.

Surely QPR should be able to sack Barton if they want to? In any other business, if you did something wrong, that meant that you were unable to work for a third of the business year then you would be sacked on the spot. Why should football be any different? I would appreciate comments on this, as I really can't get my head around it. Cheers

Not sure you'd sack someone on the basis of a sending off no matter how severe the punishment. If that was the case, wouldn't Cisse be long down the road by now?

For me, this is about dealing with someone who has anger management issues and if I was Mark Hughes, is where I'd be focusing my energies right now. Presumably, Barton is someone they wish to keep on as a player that is. Forgiveness is all.

If they want to keep him, that is fair enough. Its just from what I have read in the papers, they wouldn't be able to sack him, even if they wanted to. The only way to get rid would be to pay out the remainder of his contract.

Croatia- Slaven Bilić kept the press on their toes today, announcing that the team to face Estonia in tomorrow's warm-up will be full of the unexpected. "Definitely, there will be surprises in the first XI," said the 43-year-old coach. "It will not be the team which will go out against Ireland in the first match in Poznan. Tomorrow we will play guys who still need to earn a spot in the team. I will give them a chance."

      So if Jelly plays..?

Greece - The only player training individually is FC Schalke 04's Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who is nursing a groin injury. The 20-year-old is expected to join his teammates by the end of the week but will be sidelined for the friendly encounter against Slovenia at Kufstein on Saturday.

      😕

ROI - Seven of his 23-man squad are carrying minor injuries, the most worrying of which surround goalkeeper Shay Given. Given is to return from London this evening after seeing a knee specialist following an incident during training on Monday. "He will be fine for the finals," said Trapattoni. "But I'd be an idiot if I risked him against Bosnia on Saturday.

I agree with you that "cheap as chips" is the best way to go at the back. Especially in the beginning until things settles down. Just saying if you fancy Greece to be a source of Cs's then it's pointless to go for Tsorvas and he doesn't play. Same with K.Papa. Q is is Torossidis worth 5.5m? Debuchy(Fra) is the same price... 😕

No boners in this game and the assist rule is a bit grey,so CS is even more important.

For my gks and five defenders, I would suggest you take a view on group 1 and decide which team is likely to deliver the most cleenies.

For me, I'd pick one Russki, one Polak, one Greek in defence. Then possibly one from Greece/Rus/Pol in goal. Remember they have to play each other so choose wisely.

Euro 2012 Assist rule - An assist is awarded when the goalscorer receives the ball directly from a team-mate (including the goalkeeper) and scores without having to take the ball past an opponent.

    Are we worried about this?

Chris I spoke about this - questioning the value of expensive mf. I am worried about it , it seems the assist has to be v clear cut so obv the amount awarded will reduce.
My other q was , who do we feel will recover more balls wingers or central defenders ? , this too has a huge bearing on pts.
To surmise : CS are essential
      RB will be v handy
Assists will be harder to come by
      Goals will be crucial.

So this is my formula going forward.

But you can only play 3 strikers so it makes sense to still get the ozil's/sneijders of this world.

AT the back it's impossible to predict who will get goals/assists/recovering ball points.

Ozil & Sneijder might still score though. Andrews might be a gem though. Enables you to beef up the defence.

I'm really tempted with an Italian defender. Might just get Spain def as well, I can see that game being a "cat & mouse" affair.

The thing is there are no boners in this game so if he only scores 1 he gets you 6x2=12. I'm thinking you can just as well cpt a def (with assist/scoring potential) or keeper(save points), especially on matchday 1.

I think Russia has a much better change of scoring more than 1 vs Cheq's than Poland scoring more than 1 vs Greece. So A Ruski captain for matchday 1 could be an option.

Id prefer to have a mid and a fwd.
Worries about VDV starting would put me off.

    Morining all,

    How does this look?

    Given/Akinfeev
    Anyukov/K.Pap/Kadlec/Piszczek/Mathijsen
    Kuba/Yarmolenko/Ozil/Srna/Rosicky
    Huntelaar/Ibra/Jelly

Rosicky is an injury worry but should be ok,
and Jelly may or may not start but other than that everything good?

I like it but personally wouldn't waste 1 of my 2 Holland spots on a defender. Would try to get Sneijder in and potentially downgrade Huntelaar to Robben/Kuyt IMO who seem to be more assured of starts (although even that is uncertain at the moment).

I wouldnt usually waste that sort of pick on a defender tbh.
But this is all for GW1 only, i'll be using wc for GW2.
I think Holland have are probably the most likely of any to keep a cs in gw1.

I'd definitely do Huntelaar > Robben. No point having two forwards uncertain of starts in your team.

          Prefer Rvp to Huntelaar anyway.

            Event though Holland may play:

            Sneijder
            Robben - RvP - Kuyt
            Huntelaar

With Huntelaar as a lone striker and RvP playing in the hole?
Don't bash me for my assumption, but believe van Marvijk may resolve his attacking problems, this way.

RVP will be on the wing instead of Kuyt if they play with Hunt. Sneijder wont be moved.

You should at least check it daily since managerial changes, especially for the captain are key.

If you're following the games every day, you should know if and when you need to make changes. You might not need to make any subs for a couple of days, eg if your bench are all from group C or D. But you can change your captain every day. So, unless you get a solid score from your day 1 captain, you'll probably need to switch it.

Good plan to have good captain options every day. And at least a bit of a spread throughout. Goalkeepers playing on different days particularly.

Hey...after a poor EPL season i really want to win my Euro's league so guys what do you think of my team so far:

    Cech
    Lahm/Zhirkov/Ramos/Pepe
    Błaszczykowski/ Iniesta/Srna
    Jelavic/Ronaldo/Lewandowski

    Subs;
    Weswood
    Eriksen/Zimling/Olsson

Thinking of changing pepe but not sure who I'll bring in. Also, not 100% sure on the Croatians...

    Group 1:
    GF/GA
    Creece 14/5
    Cheq 12/8
    Russia 17/4

Very tempted to double up on Pol/Ruski defence...

Why polish defense? Do you have any knowledge that they are any good. Russians also had a pretty easy group and they have lost 1 starting defender already. I dont think doubling up is any good given the prices set for the russian defenders. If you think Polish are just as good than go for it, much better value there.

I don't know much about Polish players since they didn't play any Qf's. We all know about Lewa/Piszc/Kuba and their performance in the Bundesliga.

I'm basing my thoughts on the fact that Greece were good defensively in the Qf's(potentially limiting the scoring and captain potential of Lewa/Kuba) but in the same breath the Greeks aren't really prolific in scoring so I might get lucky with 12 pts in CS. Even if Lewa/Kuba score and get 6 pts(no boners in Euro) then I'm sure we will all twist and give the armband to someone on matchday 2.

Piszc scored 4 goals and 7 assists in the Bundeslig this season so he is a (c) option.

Hmm, have to look at this Piszc guy, for some polish cover, dont want Lewa or Kuba for sure.
