Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Matchday Three – Day Two

Bert Van Marwijk reshuffles his pack but a disjointed Holland crash out of Euro 2012 after a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal hand them their third straight defeat. Germany maintain the tournament’s only 100% winning record after seeing off a valiant Denmark 2-1 to cement their place as Group B winners…

Germany 2 Denmark 1
Joachim Low made only one change to Germany’s starting XI last night, with Lars Bender coming in at right-back for the suspended Jerome Boateng. Despite needing just a point to clinch Group B, Low took no risks and rolled out his first-choice attackers, with Miroslav Klose afforded no more than a 16 minute sub appearance up front. Mario Gomez was amongst the points once again as he provided an assist for Lukas Podolski’s opener, while Mesut Ozil picked up his first attacking returns of the tournament by setting up Bender to notch the winner. Low’s side looked a little below-par and intriguingly it was Sami Khedira who proved to be their most creative player on the night, setting up a trio of goalscoring opportunities – in front of goal, Gomez was the most culpable, failing to hit the target with any of his three efforts against the Danes.

While Czech Republic and Greece’s progress to the knockout stages on Saturday night afforded Fantasy managers the chance of cut-price squad alternatives, Germany’s assets are far pricier. Bearing in mind they now face the Greeks in the quarter finals, Low’s side will be heavily backed and are likely to hand us strong captaincy options for Day Two of Matchday Four. Gomez’s consistency looks set to see him get the nod for the armband, while Ozil, Podolski and even Thomas Muller are all decent alternatives. In terms of general squad selection, Boateng is likely to return in defence and, at 6.5, is the cheapest of Low’s regular back-four, while Khedira’s cost of 7.5 has proven to be strong value thus far.

Morten Olsen was also forced into tinkering with his side, handing Jacob Poulsen a starting role after Dennis Rommedahl was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Michael Krohn-Deli was amongst the points yet again, nodding home the equaliser to bring his tally in the McDonald’s game to 21 points – his consistency saw him produce attacking points in all three of Denmark’s games, while Nicklas Bendtner again rewarded his Fantasy owners, providing the assist for Krohn-Deli’s goal to end the tournament on 17 points. In the end, though, their contribution proved futile as the Germans’ late goal and a win for Portugal in the other Group B game sent Olsen’s side packing.

Holland 1 Portugal 2
Paulo Bento kept the same starting XI that started the first two group matches – this meant Silvestre Valera stayed on the bench, despite his match-winning exploits against the Danes. With Holland needing to go on the attack to stand any chance of winning, the match unfolded in Portugal’s favour, with the speed of Bento’s side on the break tormenting the Dutch time and again. While Cristiano Ronaldo’s owners will be more than happy with a two goal return, the Real Madrid man could have had more, in all honesty – he had an incredible 12 shots over the 90 minutes and also hit the post twice, in addition to creating three goalscoring opportunities. With a game against Czech Republic on Day 1 of Matchday 4, Ronaldo looks the odds-on favourite for the armband in the first of the quarter-finals.

Nani picked up an assist for Ronaldo’s second and is just a single point behind him in the McDonald’s game – at 8.5 compared to 11.0, he offers an up-front alternative, though is somewhat less explosive in terms of a captaincy option. Overall, though, Bento’s consistency of selection is handy for Fantasy managers – the midfield three of Joao Moutinho, Raul Meireles and Miguel Veloso are all in the mid-price bracket, while Joao Pereira offers the cheapest route into the back-four at 6.0; his sublime through-ball assist for the equaliser served a reminder of his potential.

Holland make three changes to their lineup. Ron Vlaar took over from Johnny Heitinga at centre-back, Rafael Van der Vaart came in for Mark Van Bommel in midfield, while Ibrahim Afellay dropped out for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. The latter’s inclusion was frustrating news for Fantasy owners of Robin Van Persie – the Arsenal man started the first half in a deeper role before moving to the flank after the break.

Van der Vaart vindicated his selection by grabbing a stunning opener and offering his side hope but, the more the Dutch moved forward, the more their backline became increasingly susceptible to counter-attacks. Wesley Sneijder offered the most threat, with three shots in addition to creating a trio of goalscoring chances but Van Marwijk’s decision to start Huntelaar failed miserably, with the Schalke man managing a single (off target) effort all night.

As Fantasy managers tinker with their knockout wildcards, we will now be quick to move on our Dutch assets. Van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben are by far their most popular players, with 28.2%, 19.5% and 11.1% ownership respectively. All three have already dropped in price since the start of the tournament and, given their high prices, offer plenty chances of freshening up our squads in preparation for the last eight.

Crikey even without Ronaldo I've climbed well into the top 100 of the sky sports game from just gomez robben and ozil....

    2 transfers left

Do I use them both today on Silva + DiNatalie/Torres.... Or just Get DiNatalie/Torres and get Rooney tomorrow (even though I'll also have BenzemaC + A Young)

Which would you go for? SIlva today v croatia (who looks to me basically a second striker and on top of his game) or Rooney when he is unleashed tomorrow and hope he hits the ground running?

Also is Rooney on pens or is Gerrard?

    My Italy prediction.............
Either Spain Croatia is 1-1 and Italy win 2-1 or 1-0 and we go out,
or Spain win, but we draw.

Basically we are going home. 🙁

    Anyway my line-up prediction

    Buffon
    Maggio(Abate)-Barzagli-Chiellini-Balzaretti
    De Rossi-Pirlo-Marchisio
    Montolivo(Diamanti)
    Cassano Balotelli(DiNatale)

    lost on previous page:

Has anyone got any good tips on building an analysis tool in Excel for the upcomign FPL season?

I’m quite a seasoned excel expert, i am after some more functional help – what are good statistics to use, and what views on data have people found particularly useful?

I have already written a mechanism to get all the player stats off the Premier League ff site, so now its just a question of setting myself up with a nice ‘control panel’ before hte league starts. Want to start soon to give myself enough dev time

    any input much appreciate.d..

I suppose to get useful results out of it you would have to bias the raw returns data (e.g. goals, assists, bps etc) with some comparitors reflecting difficulty - home/away, assign the opposition team a "difficulty" value in the same way the FFS season ticker does, that sort of thing?

There would always be important things it would be difficult to factor in as a quanta - like the composition of the rest of both teams in a fixture, lots of subjective factors too. What ultimately is the aim of the exercise?

Playing the Sky game, this is my current team:

    Andersen,
    Lahm, Maniatis, Olsson, Perquis
    Young, Ozil, Shirokov
    Benzema, Gomez, Cassano

I have 7 transfers left for the two days remaining in this round. Obviously I've a few players out of the competition, but I also could do with some Spanish cover. My budget is 2.0.

I'm able to do Lahm > Alba and Shirokov > Silva, leaving with me with 0 budget. I could get rid of Young, though it doesn't seem so logical with him playing tomorrow.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do? Cheers!

I know it's early but, let's speculate anyway. Where will the value GK/Defs be this season similar to NEW/SWA 2011/12? I can still see value in SWA with Laudrup appointed (barring major player sales) but NEW will be much more expensive I believe.

I'm thinking STO, WBROM, FUL, I'm not imagining there'll be much value in promoted sides this time round.

The TV companiies now divvy up the fixtures and the ones that are going to be televised are moved to televisable times - it's illegal to broadcast 3pm Saturday games, so in terms of precise dates and times this is a provisional list, but in terms of gameweeks it's reliable until postponements intervene.

TV games aren't announced until the broadcasters have had a chance to look at the fixs in full. They'll be no changes to the GWs, but all sorts of shuffling to early/late KOs, Sundays/Mondays etc. All that fun still to come.

Sky are usually pretty quick to announce early season schedule, perhaps 10 days, couple of weeks.

people usually say there won't be value in promoted sides, but this is generally where the best value comes from, e.g. 4.0m defenders, 4.5-5.5m midfielders & sometimes a decentish striker to pick up some goals

Cos most people have no mind of their own.

They think what others tell them to think.

Iniesta is now a brand name, so people see his name & associate it with points.

And why did the association develop? It is very hard to make too unconnected items connect, so Iniesta must have a history of scoring points, thats basic pyschology.

          No.

Cause the media/commentators tell the viewers that Iniesta is a super world class footballer, so all the public then take that as gospel.

So when the public are picking their team, they see theses players names & pick them.

Iniesta averages one goal every 6.7 games for Spain, so I'd expect him to score one goal at Euro 2012.

              He is a lethal footballer.

I am not disputing that at all.

My point is that his goal ratio is not as good as what most people assume.

He is due one goal anytime soon though.

    Crap!!!!!

Cesare Prandelli will make four changes to his Italy side for the game against the Republic of Ireland – as well as reverting back to a 4-3-1-2.

The Azzurri had used an unchanged 3-5-2 in their 1-1 draws with Spain and Croatia, but they will go back to the shape they developed during qualification tonight.

Gianluigi Buffon will start in goal behind a defence which will include three new faces for the tournament.

Ignazio Abate replaces Christian Maggio on the right, while Federico Balzaretti comes in for Emanuele Giaccherini on the left.

Andrea Barzagli, now back after injury, will step in for Juventus teammate Leonardo Bonucci.

Daniele De Rossi, used as a stopper in the first two games, will return to midfield duties alongside Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio. Thiago Motta will be asked to do a job in a more advanced role.

Up top, Antonio Di Natale will replace Mario Balotelli to form a strike partnership with Antonio Cassano.

Italy probable: Buffon; Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini, Balzaretti; De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio; Motta; Cassano, Di Natale.

It's just a recycled variation of this article from UEFA yesterday, http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/blogs/blog=blog_italy_team/postid=1803879.html#italys+tactical+switch

They should be ashamed for trying to make it look like their own article, and secondly I'm suspicious towards the original one too because the author doesn't back it up with, well, anything.

Reports suggest that Modric is "close" to a Real Madrid move.
Why would he go there? To warm the bench? If Barca and Madrid are his only choices, he should stay at Spurs. Manchester United is a very good option. Scholes can't play the whole season, so he can take a place at the midfield with Scholes and Carrick rotating.

30m seems fair enough to me. We paid a lot for him when he was relatively unproven and he's developed into one of the best players in the league. And he still has a long term contract.

I think it's fair to say that anything less than 37-40 mil would be harsh for Spurs. Rope in a desperate club such as United and that should see the deal through imo.

Not sure Spurs would like to sell to Chelsea or Utd. Neither sure if Utd would spend £35M on Modric, but it seems they were willing to spend £32M on Hazard...I don't know.

Would Modric get games at Madrid? Yes. But regularly over Alonso and Khedira? Probably not, but Alonso is 31.

I would Diehard, but wait until you have line-up info, just in case Del BOsque reverts back to 4-6-0 formation. IF so, Pirlo's your man. Gomez's 5 will be beaten by someone tonight, or tomorrow.
