Scout Reports

Scout Report – Fabio Borini

Brendan Rodgers’ first foray into the transfer market as manager of Liverpool has seen the Reds snap up Fabio Borini from Roma for a fee in the region of £7.9m. The 21-year-old arrives at Anfield on a long-term deal and will work under Rodgers for the third time in his brief career, following spells in the Chelsea youth set-up and on loan at Swansea:

With Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt both leaving Anfield over the summer and further exits expected, Rodgers is beginning the slow process of shaping the current squad into one of his own making. Despite losing out on the acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson, the new Liverpool boss is keenly aware of what is required to fit into his 4-3-3 passing system and was glowing in his assessment of what Borini will bring to Anfield in the season ahead:

Fabio fits the model of what we’re trying to do in building not only for now, but also for the future. He’s a big talent, 21 years of age, he scores goals, and his passion, focus and concentration is a very important part of his game – and a big part of what you want from a player. He’s a multi-functional player who can play in a number of positions and someone I believe has got great growth. He is arguably the best physical player I’ve worked with in terms of his pace, power and fitness.

The Statistics

Borini started out in the Bologna youth system before being snapped up by Chelsea as a 16-year-old in the summer of 2007. His time at Stamford Bridge was almost entirely limited to youth and reserve team appearances – Borini was the top scorer for the reserves in 2008-09, with 10 goals from 11 games, with the highlight of his time at the London club a five-goal haul in a reserve team win over West Brom. Overall, he made a mere three league appearances before heading off to the Liberty Stadium on loan in March 2011.

His stint in the Swansea first-team was a huge success – in just nine appearances, Borini scored six times and provided three assists, helping the club to promotion via the Championship play-offs. Purchased by Parma last summer, he was immediately loaned out to fellow Serie A outfit Roma, with an option to make the move permanent. He made 24 appearances last time out in Italy’s top-flight and, on the back of a nine-goal haul, earned a call-up to Italy’s squad for the Euro 2012.

The Prospects

While the move might not mirror the headline-hogging transfer deals of last summer under Kenny Dalglish, Rodgers has proven a canny operator in the transfer market and his time at Swansea demonstrated his ability to produce the goods without busting the budget.

Borini’s loan time at Swansea showed – like Sigurdsson – he has the ability to flourish in Rodgers’ system; his off the ball movement and positioning, allied with an endless energy and eye for goal, is critical to the role of lone frontman in the 4-3-3 and raises huge question marks over Andy Carroll’s future at the club. Carroll thrived at Newcastle on crosses aplenty but this approach is the antithesis of Rodgers’ ethos – strong aerial ability is far from an essential requirement of a typical forward in the new manager’s system. Yesterday’s news that the Magpies are keen to bring their former striker back to Tyneside is perhaps little surprise, then.

Liverpool clearly need an upturn in attacking performance after last season’s poor campaign; the Merseysiders notched just 47 goals, only three more than Swansea and Borini’s unselfish style of play should also boost the appeal of the likes of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan continues to excel for his country but has been unable to replicate his form for the national team at Anfield – a change in system and style could finally afford him the chance to deliver on his undoubted potential. Bearing in mind that Suarez has been priced at 9.5 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Borini should come in at a lesser cost – a value in the region of 8.5 seems more realistic and, if he can nail down a regular role up front, has the ability to prosper under Rodgers’ guidance and affords Fantasy managers an intriguing mid-price option for the season ahead.

The Reds’ opening schedule will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers to court caution when assessing their options as the season gets underway. Rodgers’ side entertain City, United and Arsenal at Anfield in the first five Gameweeks, while trips to West Brom and Sunderland won’t be easy – deferring from any initial investment may be the best answer, then, affording us time to see whether Borini settles quickly on Merseyside before Liverpool’s fixtures begin to look a little more tempting.

    8.5 would be alright.

No idea how Brendan will set the team up though. I'd be watching pre-season and maybe first half dozen Prem games before even considering any LIV att other than Luis.

Agree with that Scroob, but there's a lot of work to do to get LIV playing effectively as a team and integrating so many big players into the right roles. Plus, LIV's starting fixs are tough to write the least.

But a fair watchlist option, for sure.

Remember the VMP though (Victor Moses Precident). Pre-season means diddly squat when the real game begins. I'll likely be going on reliable players from last season in teams who've retained their managers than gambling on pre-season performance.

As long as he gets a midfielder classification, he walks straight in.

True. And I do think Forca is good at fueling debate - even if it's shooting him to flames it still makes people think a little bit harder.

It's harder because English isn't his first language I think he struggles slightly to explain without being insulted/insulting others sometimes, even if he doesn't mean to.

You just have very strong opinions....Some of them outrageously so. Sometimes, like in the Euros, you were spot on with your predictions. Gomez(c) - 20pts etc against Dutch....

But most of the times, we tend to disagree with a lot of them. So be prepared for that, and don't get annoyed/frustrated when it happens. Likewise, I have somehow managed to cope with some of your comments where I strongly disagree. I am sure others will reach that stage soon too.

most of ur opinions are not backed by facts and u say them in such a way which annoys most of us. e.g ur hatred for rvp and arsenal without any real reasoning gets on a lot of people's nerves. also, in most of the debates, u adopt a kind of tone which gives the impression that u think ur right and thats it.

by backing his opinions with facts, listening properly to what others have to say and replying accordingly

e.g that suarez-rvp debate. the other guy will defend rvp by giving his stats and he'll just hit back with his usual " i just know suarez the best, rvp is so overrated, you'll see"

So what teams are everyone going for in terms of rotations this season?

Thinking a might start with CHEFUL & SWATOT and slowly change them into MCIMUN & NEWSUN as the season goes on. Although I'll be watching Liverpool & Everton closely as the season settles in and their schedules ease up.

    Any thoughts on this?

Ok, for rotating defenders/keepers the idea is that they're cheap and, certain fixtures aside, you play them in home games and bench away. With the likes of Utd and City they have a decent chance of keeping a CS anywhere so you don't want to be frequently benching them.

It's difficult to do before FPL opens but you want players around 4-5m, no more. Look at combos like Wigan/QPR and Villa/WBA.

I havent looked at rotations but clubs you should be looking at for cheap rotations would be Villa, West Brom, QPR etc, clubs that will have cheap players but provide solidarity at the home, although these teams are hard to predict at the beginning of the season.
Sunderland, Swansea could have a cheap starter if we are lucky and 1-2 of the promoted teams could also be good picks.

Pies (or lack there of), there'll be loads of time to pick up tips and strategic pointers once the game has launched. You'll get hundreds of RMTs (Rate My Team) on here and over the subsequent weeks, tactics and selections will become much clearer in your own mind.

For the record, until the game avctually launches, and I have the price/position data I need, I'm only casually engaged in speculative squad building, but if you're up for being more proactive, more power to you.

This place has definitely gone crazy. The first post is on topic but nothing else is.

Borini is on my watchlist though with the fixtures I'll take a 'wait and see' approach. Hopefully comes in cheaper than predicted. Given his lack of pedigree I think he could be cheaper.

In a way it's nice when a team has a poor run of fixtures early on, particularly when there's a new manager in post - makes it easy to steer clear and see what's what when the fixtures start to turn.

Except the problem sometimes with this is that by the time the fixtures start to turn, the team in question has presumably had such a poor start, (due to poor fixtures and a new manager - i.e. the reasons why you were avoiding the team in the first place as you expect them to do poorly), then you will look at their players and just think ''Well they haven't done much, I don't want any of their players, good fixtures or not.''

Not really, since after Bolton and Blackburn's abysmal starts, no one was suddenly leaping all over their players once their fixtures picked up around GW10 - GW12 last year.

Yes, but at the time it COULD have just been down to the fact that they'd each had a tough start rather than the players being complete sh*te and Kean/Coyle being rubbish, and then once fixtures picked up and evened out from GW10 to GW19, then suddenly Bolton and Blackburn players could have picked up a tonne of points in that period.

The fact that they didn't is a bit moot, because like I say, after 8 or 10 weeks or so, then a team that has a tough start may have lost a lot of games, even though they actually go on to finish mid table, (think like Everton have done over a lot of recent seasons etc).

But what about Demba? Maybe this whole Carroll deal is being shaped by Ba's departure to pastures new? Interestingly too, NEW played pretty narrow last season and added an extra man in CM, didn't they. Not sure that would suit Carroll.

    Regarding FPL going live:
Surely the fact that the FPL Twitter site did not say it was going to post any prices today and the fact it has not, strongly points towards a 'go-live' today. It is slighlty annoying that FPL have not communicated anything through communities like this, as they know they have a strong following. People like good customer service when using a 'product', but I get the impression FPL enjoy keeping people waiting, otherwise they would have communicated. I don't want to give them a hard time too much, as there is no doubt there product is the best and it is important everything is right. The last thing 'they' want or need is a release coming out and performing like last years epic fail. However... Some communication would be good! Anyway, lets hope my reading between the lines (Which everyone else is thinking) with regards to no player prices is correct and we can all spend a Monday evening trying to get our teams started in preperation for the season!
Tip for a good season: Torres.

On holidays, but reading quickly through today's comments. It seems that people are truly addicted to FPL. Personally, I have ran a mini-league (15/20 ppl) for 3 years with FPL, but I now try to convince ppl to switch to either the auction league (after a good success with the Euro, but prices have jumped to £27 per team!!!) or TFF for the following reasons:

    - I still have not forgiven the farce of last year
    - They seem to have a laugh and are again the last ones to open
    - Bps are a joke
    - I like to be non-conventional and go with different games
    - The prizes are ridiculous (we are all from the UK and can enter any other games)
    - I can not believe how arrogant and useless they are when answering simple emails

Am i the only chairman to switch from FPL to another game this year? Surely it is time to vote with our feet and finally get a proper ff game with nice and helpful people running it.

But the whole point of bps is that it rewarded the players who weren't rewarded with points in the game, but still played very well. I don't think stats could ever do this effectively

Certainly BP's are handy in increasing a player's potential weekly score.

I don't know if you played the Fantasy Euro 2012 game, but if you did, then there probably would have been times where you had a player captained on 6 points, and you could switch the captain to someone else for the next day, but due to the lack of BP's, then a striker scoring two goals would only get you 10 points, instead of the 13 points they would likely get with the FPL system, so you didn't really fancy gambling since player's monster scores are reduced somewhat.

This meant that clean sheet scores of 6 points were decent scores in the Euro game, but in FPL if you get 6 points from someone then you are happy, but you're not exactly elated with it.

Yep I think we generally agree you shouldn't have a subjective system for giving out BPs. It's just that the current objective one is fatally flawed, as exemplified by the shots off target fiasco.

If they fix the obvious teething problems they had last year, I think they could get people to love it.

I like have a performance-related aspect of the game. If scoring was purely "on" or "off" based on whether McClean was jammy enough to nick another jammy goal, it would be to the detriment of the game...

I completely agree Isacki, if they could change the current objective system to a better objective system then it will make the game better.

At the moment scoring goals, being on the winning side and not shooting off target seem to be the main deciding factors for BP's.

I doubt they will change it, but here's hoping! 🙂

I like BP's too, it's the inconsistency of them that irks ppl I think. It's funny to think that IMO there was even more inconsistency to them last year when they changed them to a statistical base rather than the previous year when it was a thumb in the air decision....ah an easterly breeze - that'll be 3 bps for Charlie!

I like BPs and regardless of the system employed most of us are able to adapt our selections/captaincy choices to take advantage of them.

I personally prefer the human element of rewarding all round good performance, even with the inevitable flaws/bias this introduces. It just seems fairer to reward someone who shines in a match generally through good movement, constant involvement, nice touches, etc. than someone who scores a penalty and was anonymous otherwise.

Both systems have pros and cons but ultimately BPs make the game more interesting than it otherwise would be.

I know Aguero was the main man for City last season, but now Tevez is back in Mancini's good books, wont he be seeing a similar amount of gametime? 9.0 looks a steal and having him over aguero will allow for a much stronger team

City would need to move a few of their strikers on. One would imagine to raise £ (FFP) & to guarantee him playing time.

I think for the opening few GW's Tevez over Aguero is a decent shout, but once the CL kicks in you probably should avoid.
As for Balotellis form mentioned above, it's a good point, but then again if it weren't for Tevez, City would have got second place last season. If he stays I'd say he will be in the top XI but subject to rotation when the games are congested.

Hopefully FPL will increase Tevez's price a bit.

I don't know why people are so happy about some players being cheaply priced, because then it makes it obvious for the recreational players even, that these cheapies are good value, and then Tevez and co., (assuming he plays regularly), will be in everyone's teams and this will decrease our edge over the people that don't have much of a clue about football.

Like imagine if FPL revealed later today that RVP was going to be 8.0M, you would probably get loads of people on here saying:

''Wow, RVP, what a steal, this will allow us to get a load of other big guns into our team now! :-D''

Except even Joe Public will have RVP in this scenario, so no actual relative advantage is accrued, and so everyone's squads will just consist of RVP + 14 different players now with which to extract an edge with, instead of the full 15 potentially different players.

Agreed, the best pricing strategy would be to get the the average prices of what ppl would be happy to pay on each players (from a representative panel) and add up 0.5/1m.
As such, ppl would only get players that they think will over-achieve, and not the obvious bargains that every man and his dog will get.

I made this point somewhere a few weeks ago when people were talking about wanting obvious bargains, it removes the advantage of doing research/putting time in.

On another issue, not a chance in hell FPL will now change any of the released prices. Tevez stays as he is.

I emailed them and they said that they are forwarding it on to their pricing team for possible inclusion with their pricing strategy for the 'next couple of seasons'.

Now that could include this one, or it could mean the two seasons after this.

Also, they put that Tevez was 6.0M initially, so while they then corrected it to 9.0M, there is no harm in them correcting it again to 10.5M.

There's a difference between a typo and an actual repricing though. They're not going to allow people to petition them to change the prices once they're set - that would be absurd.

Unless they agree with your logic and realise that they've overlooked something.

Then that would be making good changes, that are the complete opposite of absurd.

The prices they quote via Twitter are not binding in any way so they can still change any of them if they want to, and none of us can say sh*t if they did that, so lets hope that they DO put Tevez's price up to a level which reflects only his points scoring ability given that he plays, rather than a price which also accounts for his game time uncertainty.

Can you imagine the outcry if they do though? Even if it were a change for the better, they would be absolutely pilloried for doing it which is why it won't happen. There's always going to be some debate about whether players are over/under priced - they obviously feel it's a fair price for Tevez taking into account likely rotation, etc.

It's similar to Balotelli's price last year and he scored brilliantly when given the game time but because of his rotation nobody seemed to think he was under priced.

I think 9.0m is justifiable for Tevez personally.

What outcry would ensue if they made 'a change for the better'? Everyone would be praising them.

You only think his price is justifiable because you think that he will be rotated, but what if he doesn't get rotated? Pricing him at 10.5M or 11.0M and then he gets rotated just means that no one chooses him anyway, so it doesn't matter that he is 'too much' when he is sitting there on the transfers page looking back at you with a 0.2% ownership. He would only be swindling an extra 1.5M of the 0.2% of idiots that would still own him despite his lack of game time.

Whereas at 9.0M and staring back at you with 35.6% ownership because he starts the season well and Mancini falls in love with him again and daren't drop him, would completely suck since you are forced to keep him at that sort of value, just like all the recreational sheep will be doing and so you only have 91.0M and 14 players with which to garner an edge instead of 100.0M and 15 players.

All I am saying is that I don't know either way whether he will get dropped or not, so the safer thing to do is to just price him high and not account for his game time uncertainty, (and don't account for this with any other player either), since pricing him high doesn't hurt the game in either scenario, whereas pricing him low does hurt the game in one of the two scenarios.

Your Balotelli example is poor, since what if FPL didn't predict it right, and Mario got loads of game time due to Aguero breaking his leg, and then suddenly everyone has Balotelli in their team and it makes the game suck since you don't give a rats a*se what points he gets as everyone has him. The RVP situation was similar, but he had an unexpected monster of a season last year that also went injury-free for him, and at least he started at 12.0M so he's hardly super cheap, but even RVP at that price did sort of ruin the game a bit.

Absolutely - the way they were getting praised for changing the price from 6m to 9m you mean?

I understand perfectly your reasoning but that's never been the pricing policy and it's not realistic to expect it to be.

By that logic Joe Hart's understudy should be priced at 7.5m Do you think he will be? Of course not. Should Dzeko also be 11m just in case Aguero, Balotelli and Tevez get sold? Should Lukaku be the same price as Torres? Where do you stop?

Likely game time has always been a pricing factor and is completely valid. Rightly or wrongly that's the way they choose to determine player prices and having set them they aren't going to revisit them because you send them an email claiming you've lost a competitive advantage.

Anyway, I'm out of here but I'd like to say this has been a far more intelligent discussion than 99% of what goes on round here and I thank you for it. Just to be clear - I don't disagree with your premise as such, I just think there are other valid approaches and FPL choose to take one of them. Tevez will be 9.0m and we'll all cope in our own ways 🙂

To an extent. But RVP played ages 17-20 as a winger, Suarez played aged 19-23 as a striker.
Suarez might end up better than RVP, he probably is better than him at this stage in his career but is he a better player right now? Hell no.

Not agreeing / disagreeing either way, but a fairly important point to note is RVP used to be a midfielder, as far as I'm aware Suarez didn't.

Your argument seems to be revolving around having RVP or Suarez in your fantasy team - why pick one? At times last season, both were valuable and I'm sure that'll be the case again this season. I suppose my point is, why choose?

If you think Suarez is going to have an awesome season then fair enough, you may well be right but it doesn't make RVP shi*.

        Because he's picked dodgy stats.

Suarez may have a better GS record but he's played in a mediocre league during some of the prime years of his career. RVP left said league when he was a youngster, didn't play striker, and moved to one of - if not the - best league in the world.

Remember how lethal Kuyt was in the Erdivisie?

Adding up goals and assists in the Dutch League and in the Premier League is like adding up apples and oranges. Doesn't make any sense.

Although, I do agree that Suarez hasn't shown his full potential in England yet. This year will be decisive for him.

Far from blind, in the present transfer market RVP is being monitored by a host of top sides, that is fact, his price tag will be the stumbling block for a number of these club. Suarez however is not, certainly not in Europe, or the big clubs in PL. RVP is a much more sought after player with a higher price tag based on his ability.Fact.

In his first two seasons RVP started 25 games for Arsenal! 25
The rest he was coming off the bench.

Point. However if there was no good value players, people would end up with very similar teams anyway as everyone would get the best performers from last season ie. Rooney, aguero, dempsey as their price wouldnt be much more than the tevezs of the world.

I think that there should be different value from player to player, but the advantages and value in certain players that we each individually see, should be more sublte in my opinion, and I don't like the FPL creating blating obviously picks like Tevez at 9.0M, (if he plays), and substitute defenders that are way cheaper than the regular defenders like J Evans last year who started at 4.5M, when a long-term injury to a regular starter, (Vidic), suddenly allows everyone to buy into a good defence at too cheap a price.

My reply failing is getting ridiculous now. But yeah agree it should be more subtle for some players, would make having a balanced squad much more important. On that note Ryan Bertrand could be an absolute steal this season if Cashley gets injured!

Round, this is also why getting the game launched early is helpful, many players get priced at one club, only to transfer to another, throwing up some really good bargains. Euros mean transfer business has been relatively slow, but it'll start picking up soon, I would think.

Yeah, there is not much that FPL can do about players transferring from one club to another, but at least the more astute people can watch out for this and follow the transfer news, (like hauling in Enrique just before GW1 because he went to Liverpool last season).

I like to think that in theory, a cheapie that is 4.5M suddenly moving to a club that has a defence with other defenders at 6.0M, and then the cheapie slots straight into the starting line-up, then his 'poorness' brings down the quality of the defensive unit as a whole and so the each defender in that defence is now worth 5.3M, (say), meaning that the cheap guy offers 0.8M of value instead of 1.5M, and the existing defenders offer 0.7M of rip-off instead of 1.5M of rip-off.

I hope I'm explaining the theoretical point I am trying to get across! 😀

There's going to be too much of a valuation difference for it to happen. Everton don't have to sell, and value him at £20m. Can't see it going through.

As long as Anderson, Carrick, Cleverley, Powell stay fit, we're in midfield. Problem last season was long term injuries to Ando and TC, that can't happen again surely.
