Scout Report – Oscar

Chelsea continued to splash the cash with wild abandon earlier this week, after the club confirmed on Wednesday they have signed the highly-rated Brazilian Oscar on a five-year contract. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £25m and is the fifth attacking midfielder to join the club since the end of last season, following the acquisitions of Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin De Bruyne.

The transfer comes as little surprise, bearing in mind the midfielder revealed days ago he had already undergone a medical for the Champions League winners. While Roberto Di Matteo lavished praise upon the youngster, the Blues boss also indicated the new signings may need time to gel within the Chelsea system in the season ahead:

He is a fantastic player, one of the youngest to push through to the Brazilian national team and he will be a fantastic signing for us. Oscar is a very exciting young talent, a creative midfield player who scores goals. He will add a lot of options and solutions for us in midfield. It will be a challenge to make sure we have the right balance within the team so we will have to see how we fit the team together with all the players.

The Statistics

Oscar’s career began in the Sao Paulo youth system in his native country before he made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 17. His only season there harvested 11 league appearances and a trio of assists before he moved on to Internacional in December 2010. The attacking midfielder made just five appearances over the remainder of his first season at his new club but the 2011/12 campaign saw Oscar produce the type of attacking returns that made him such a highly sought-after talent. Over the course of 26 league appearances, he returned 10 goals and seven assists and helped steer his side to the local state championship. He also turned out five times for the club this season before joining up with his country for Olympic duty.

On the international stage, Oscar featured for Brazil at every level from Under 15 – Under 20 before stepping up to the senior side last year. He has turned out for Brazil on six occasions and netted on his last appearance against Argentina, though his most memorable moment for his country so far has been a hat-trick against Portugal in the semi-finals of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.

The Prospects

There is no doubt that the Chelsea midfield has both the potential to delight and furiously frustrate Fantasy managers in equal measure next season. Certainly, the 4-2-3-1 shape looks established now and while loan moves for both De Bruyne and Thorgan Hazard have been mooted, the number of options still available to Di Matteo means midfield rotation could bite hard.

Much may depend on how much Di Matteo cedes to the wishes of Roman Abramovich in handing all the marquee names simultaneous starting roles. Considering Eden Hazard was purchased before Di Matteo even penned a full-time contract, it’s fairly apparent that the Russian owner is now intent on seeing his side dazzle – as opposed to grind – their way to silverware. An attacking trident of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar, interchanging positions and wreaking havoc behind Fernando Torres is perhaps the ultimate scenario, though with Marko Marin, Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Yossi Benayoun and possibly Ramires in the mix for the offensive midfield slots, certainty of game time looks an unlikely ally for the vast majority.

Di Matteo has already hinted that Mata is likely to be afforded time off at the start of the season due to back-to-back Euro 2012 and Olympic involvement with Spain – it’s not yet clear whether Oscar will feature in his immediate plans, though bearing in mind that he could feature for Brazil for up to a week before the domestic campaign kicks off on Saturday August 18, the youngster is likely to be gradually introduced to the Stamford Bridge set-up,.

Priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oscar is far from cheap and looks no more than a punt initially, with Hazard, Marin and Frank Lampard the likely candidates for a double Gameweek 1 which sees the Blues travel to Wigan before hosting Reading. Intriguingly, Oscar comes in at a mere 5.8 in the Sky Sports game – far cheaper than both Mata (8.9) and Hazard (7.7) – and with Chelsea welcoming (NEW, STO, NOR) to the Bridge by the end of Gameweek 7, there’s little doubt their fixtures are enticing. By then, hopefully, there will be a little more clarity over Di Matteo’s selection policy but there would be no surprise if rotation continues to curtail our best-laid plans over the course of the upcoming season and reduce the Blues midfield to a Fantasy manager’s nightmare.

That's insane. The courts ruled him innocent. How can they charge him when he's innocent in the eyes of the law? The FA are power mad w*ankers.

My heart tells me to take the punt on Rafael and use the 0.5 million that I get in the process to upgrade my midfield. Please have a look at this guys.

    Friedel – Federici

    Terry – Clichy – Rafael – Demel – Fonte

    Hazard – Valencia – McClean – Taarabt – Noble

    Torres – Aguero – Graham

I’ve gone Friedel + Rafael over De Gea and Kaboul which allows me to get McClean for Maloney in midfield who I had in my previous drafts.

RMT please? Or any opinions would be appreciated you good folk.

Could end up being taken back to courts though if he challenges it.

No, it wouldn't. Suarez was given a 'double ban' based on the repetition of his language. So, even assuming Terry's language is adjudged to be exactly equal to Suarez', he'd likely get only a 3 or 4 game ban.

He wasn't proven innocent, he just wasn't proven guilty. Big difference.

He admitted using the language, but the context was in dispute ('the sarcasm defense').

In criminal law, you need to prove beyond reasonable doubt, whereas in a FA hearing the requirements aren't so strict. i.e. if the FA don't believe him, they can sanction him.

If Suarez had gone to court he may well have seen the same outcome. But a member of the general public didn't complain which is why the CPS didn't take action.

lots of options for Terry to clear his name with the FA after the not guilty verdict from the courts...

FA cannot possibly find him guilty as they would need to show they have evidence which the courts did not have... If they had such evidence how come they did not give it to the courts...

FA are just trying to save face after what Capello said and to somehow show they were right to remove him from the captaincy... Terry's lawyers will get him off scot-free again...

I don't think it has to do with proof. I think the requirements for guilt are simply different.

The FA has a stand against racial language - Suarez's position was that he indeed used the word, but not in a derogatory way.

According to Terry, his situation is similar.

In the eyes of the law it needed to be proven that he not only used the language, but used it in a racist/aggressive/derogatory manner. He used the 'I was sarcastically replying what was said to me' defence. So very hard to prove otherwise.

With the FA it's just whether he used the racist language, irrespective of if it was not meant in a racist/aggressive/derogatory manner. In a similar sense, Saurez admitted using the words he did, but said it wasn't aggressive, etc.

I may be wrong, but that's my take on it anyway.

    Hey gang!

I'm still ploughing on with a team that's quite different to the majority. Here are some of my thoughts:

Chelsea: Great fixtures, great team spirit under di Matteo, lots of potential, Champions League and FA Cup winners.
    - defence: somewhat dubious last season, but should be reliable. Ivanovic/Terry/Cole all great shouts.
    - midfield: too many options, too much uncertainty, too little pitchtime.
    - up front: Torres. Nailed on. Finding form. = No brainer. Not just for 2 weeks! For the duration!

City: League champions. Full of attacking flair. Commanding defence.
    - defence: fullback rotation, some competition for Lescott (Kolo, Savic), Kompany presumably nailed on.
    - midfield: some rotation, Silva is class, but tailed off last season, Yaya is a beast and assured of plenty of pitchtime, only 8m? No brainer.
    - up front: 3, maybe 4, fantastic strikers, capable of winning the golden boot, Aguero more expensive, Balotelli more of a disciplinary liability, Tevez - undoubted "world class player" at 9m. No brainer.

United: enough goals and points to win in all but 6 previous PL seasons.
    - defence: injury stricken, uncertain in all positions at the moment
    - midfield: incredibly prone to rotation
    - up front: Rooney, great but streaky. Essential when he's scoring. Is he scoring?

Arsenal: very attacking, consistent high performers, bolstered with some added talent and experience. Big uncertainty over RVP's future.
    - defence: shaky last season, some uncertainty about how to resolve that, Vermaelen offers potential at both ends
    - midfield: pretty uncertain
    - up front: Walcott, classified as a midfielder, much improved, nailed on = no brainer.

Anyway, that's my justification for Torres, Yaya, Tevez & Walcott...

Hazard is OOP like walcott but has much better fixtures. I only fancy one of Walcott's next 6 fixtures (SOT). He will be in my team after that though! Tevez is prone to rotation with Balotelli likely to share minutes.

I'm debating whether RVP is worth 13m? Putting him in means It's very difficult to fit in other players and when you consider players like Kagawa, Valencia. Valencia, Bale, Torres, Tevez are like 4m cheaper I really wonder if it's worth squeezing him in - and that's if he stays.

    Thoughts?

Not sure if they have a specific charge for racist abuse and threatening behaviour. Or if they need to, might be easier to say he wasn't doing something that amounts to a criminal offence, but was violating the abusive behaviour rules.

Completely agree. They need to tread carefully with these precedents they're setting - drawing a clear red line is important.

I think maybe they're just trying to take the heat out of it by dampening down the charge to 'threatening behavior with a racial element' to replace the 'Terry is racist' headline that most people would read from the headlines.
