The Technical Area – Assessing City’s 3-4-1-2

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

Does anyone know what the Everton lineup was for their last game against Malaga?

I cant seem to find it on the pre-season link, or on Everton website, or even a cursory google search.

Basically I want to know if Pienaar played and how long for?

Trouble is he loves to rotate and subbed Nzogbia on 77mins in last game. Would rather have a more secure, 90 min player. Michu got subbed in last game too. Cant tell whether it was to save them for opening wknd or not.

Current team is below, but I have 2.5 in the bank. I am still unsure whether to invest and upgrade Demel or reinvest into my forwards, especially Torres has had his DGW and upgrade/downgrade him to either Rooney/Kun/Tevez. For some reason I have a strong feeling about Tevez, he just looks extremely sharp in all pre season compared to the other City forwards. But any input for the following is welcome.

    GK Vorm, Begovic
DEF Cuellar, Williams, A Cole, Fabio, Demel
MID Bale, Toure, Kagawa, Ramires, Dyer
    FWD Podolski, Petric, Torres

First RMT post of the year!

    Fed / DDG
Terry, Zabletta, Gunter / Hangeland, Clark
Kagawa, Bale, Ramires, Guthrie / Michu
    Graham, Torres (C), Tevez

2 million in the bank to do the compulsory Torres>Rooney transfer gw2, then gw3 I ship Ramires or Terry and should just about have 11 players for that week! Bit of a risk but worst comes to worse I have 10 players that week or take a 4 point hit.

So what's wrong with it/how would you improve it? Bear in mind I'll probably end up arguing with any suggestions that are made 😛

    Thanks!

          I have:

          Bale Ramires Nzogbia McClean Guthrie
          Aguero Torres Graham

Torres will become Rooney for GW2.
Ramires will become Pienaar for GW3.

Guthrie plays the dgw, as he is doing well, scores and gets man of the match in pre-seasons. Then McClean comes in from GW2 onwards for their easy fixtures.

I've been toying with the idea of dropping Kagawa for a 6.5m mid and upgrading Tevez to Aguero, but I just can't justify it. Both Aguero and Tevez will be sharing game time with Dzeko and Balotelli and be subject to a bit of rotation, so your paying 2.5m for a striker with a slightly more advanced role. I can't see how that would give me more points than upgrading McClean to Kagawa/Carzola would give.

I agree. If it looks that way then I will be taking Aguero out for Tevez and getting Kagawa in. But for now, I think Aguero has proved to be the better choice over the course of all the pre-season games. Scout picks should be interesting in a few days!

The fixtures are good and I'm a big fan of McClean, but I'm hopeful Kagawa could get plenty of goals and assists if he slots in just behind Rooney. Could be looking at Nani-esque returns but hopefully with less rotation. The rest of my team is pretty safe to, so I just see this as the one punt I'm entitled too.

Forgot about that. Well its Kagawa, Toure or Nasri... Toure is probably the safe option, but I just don't see him getting forward very often. Nasri will compete with Silva for a place and lose lots of playing time, even if he does get the first couple of games. Long term Kagawa looks the best out of these 3, and since I'm forcing myself into transferring out Chelsea players the first couple of weeks it could be a while before I can get him in. I don't think it will be a disaster if Kagawa is rested - either Michu or Hangeland will play instead and both could score well week one... In fact I might just bench Kagawa.

You have any ideas who you would have instead?

Rudd or Ruddy? That's a lot of faith in Al-Habsi if you've gone Rudd...

The cheap defence is risky, but I will admit I have considered it myself, in the end it's all about balance though and can you find 3/5 defenders who are likely to get you CS points?

I prefer Dyer over Sinclair for Swansea mid's (but that's my personal opinion). Had toyed with the idea of a Swansea mid but can't fit them in (see team below and please share thoughts).

The points are in the forwardline and you have invested accordingly - fair enough.

Dempsey to Lampard or Hazard this week for the DGW? That'll give you a chance to see how Dempsey goes? (or where he goes...)

If Manchini goes with what he's been trialling all preseason then YYT and Kolarov should play. With Richards out there's a fair chance Kolarov will get game time and if Kolarov's playing an attacking role I'm more than happy for him to pick up assists & CS's! Big gamble but potential for decent reward.

Lampard / Kagawa / Yaya Toure / Bale
      Cisse / Tevez / Graham

Subs: Ruddy / McArtney / Barnett / Obertan

McArtney & Obertan should provide decent cover for Cole & Lampard that week.

Hey hey 😀 I suspect I am still the sole Wigan fan here still! Miyachi, Maloney and Moses looks nice to me, it's a tough one on the latter in terms of money though.

He could easily leave next season on a free, potentially losing out on around 5-10 million, however if we miraculously manage to keep our form even slightly below our best of last season, we could reap the profits and more.

Ryo is a great signing though, only on loan of course, however a nice boost of pace to go along with Crusat and Moses if he stays 🙂 I'm already mulling over the options of which one to choose!

I think it would be foolish of Maloney to be of risk of not being played by Martinez, since he's one of our best players.

With Diame and Rodallega I'll say Maloney will keep playing.

I think he'll still play, it'll be interesting to see how Martinez plays it though, personally I'd love something like Moses and Miyachi in the wings, Maloney up front with Crusat just behind.

I've been pretty busy lately unfortunately so haven't even got a chance to watch any of our pre-season training, so anticipation is high for our first game..though Chelsea with their crazily star-studded team looks a bit unkind of a start 😀

Alreet lads. For those of you who are confident that chelsea's midfielders will play both games in the DGW, remember that Chelsea play us next saturday. Surely Di Matteo would prefer to rest players for Reading rather than Newcastle. There is no point in having such a massive squad if you are not going to use it. I personally wouldn't touch either mata, hazard or lampard, unless I wanted them long term (bench GW3). Ramires is a machine, so might play them all, but I doubt he would get that many points in the double anywhere.

Yeah I fully agree with this reasoning and as a result I'm considering dropping Lampard from my team. Perhaps I can be content with just Cole and Torres who will be nailed on for both games.

However I was planning on selling Lampard for the first decent nailed on big hitting midfielder. This is still a good option because apart from Bale & VDV I'm not sure whether there are anymore guaranteed big hitting attacking midfielders out there. Perhaps its worth having a Chelsea mid and hop on the first big hitting mid that jumps on the scene.

I think it's great, hard to believe there's that much in the bank. It might be worth having a look at getting a top captaincy option in the frontline, but I suspect that is the plan with the 3.5 mil in the bank. With one of Rooney, Aguero, or RVP in there, I'd say this is a fantasic team. 🙂

out of his 33 appearances last season, nani played on the left only 9 times, suggesting that fergie much prefers him on the right. he's not gonna get into the team ahead of valencia, so i really think he'll struggle to get regular starts, despite his excellent fpl stats when he does play. you disagree?

not kean on nani with all whats been going on with his contract also he could be a rotation risk, apart from mignolet i like it for GW1 with obvious changes 2 come after

Id probably go for Ivanovic instead of Cashley because of the better goal threat all round
swap yaya for nani and guthrie for kanu and that midfield is 10/10 i reckon

    Two questions for you all....

    1) For 8.5 would you rather Jelavic or Bent, Long term/short term, and why?

    2) Piennar or maybe Coleman? Coleman is cheaper and a decent goal threat, no one like him?

      1) very hard decision. i think they'll both do great. bent might be better for the differential, not many have him. everton's fixtures are great after GW1 though...

      2) coleman not nailed on to play, would be my worry. he's kind of gone off the boil a bit too i think?

Question 1 and 2 are related. I like to spread the risk so having two attacking Everton players may be a bit much. Get Piennar over Coleman definitely. He is nailed on and will get you the points. As a result Bent becomes a prime asset for Villa's upcoming fixtures. He will be the main target man for Villi without a doubt.

      1. Jelavic

      2. Pienaar - Coleman not nailed on. Osman first choice and now talks of Adam Johnson moving to Goodison as well.

Bent/Villa: whm, EVE, new, SWA, sot, WBA

Jelavic/Everton: MUN, avl, wba, NEW, swa, SOT

I think Bent's fixtures just about give him the edge ... tough one, though.

more long term though jelly's fixtures are better, i don't think they play any big teams for a while after that.

not that i tend to think that far ahead myself :p

So, I have Nasri in my team right now - he seems fairly nailed on in the 3 of the 4-2-3-1 formation, but should I be concerned he'll be rotated with Silva in the 1 of the 3-4-1-2 formation?

Damn, you've got me 2nd guessing myself now. My gut feel is they'll revert to 4-2-3-1 as they can utilise their attacking assets most effectively in this formation. I think the new formation is more of a plan B type scenario to go to if things aren't working in a game and they need to try something else. The obvious switch is Nasri -> Kagawa I guess, hmmm.

There aren't many nailed on big hitting mids outside of Bale VDV. However if I were to think of the next closest to being nailed on it would be Kagawa. A decent choice

that's tough as I want both Bale and Kagawa. Plus my defence is already pretty strong so it's becoming difficult to let go. Is the big three up front really worth it or would you drop Torres for Tevez and keep Graham/Petric

I don't think Tevez is going to score nearly as many pts as Aguero, but I think he's going to give every 9.0 midfielder a run for their money.

Ive been tinkering a lot recently, but stumbled across this and find it rather juicy!

    Schwarzer, Jaas
    Zabaleta, Acole, Hangeland, clyne, McCartney
    Pienaar, Bale, Mata, Nolan, Guthrie
    Tevez, Rooney, Podolski

Any reason why i shouldn't play this or am i in a fpl day dream
