The Technical Area – Assessing City’s 3-4-1-2

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

    Morning All

Since supporters of clubs outside the Premier don't get an official league to join I thought I'd make one.

So, if your primary team is NOT in the Premier League then feel free to join up!

Barnsley or Brisbane, Once Caldas or Accrington Stanley, all are welcome.

okay lot of teams have Torres (for most its the double GW)
    BUT
he has been selected for spain's friendly in south america, so can he play 4 games in around 10-12 days?
Same goes for Ramires; are they both nailed on for the two games?

Maybe sturidge maybe an option if he is fit. but cant see a player who flies to south america playing 2 games in a row. And even if he plays, he may not perform upto the mark.

Tbh i only watch a fraction of championship football compared to the EPL but as far as I remember he was a regular, though I don't think Reading were exactly prolific in terms of goalscoring. And their new signings may have an impact.

Last year, everyone was getting Silva on the merit that he may have a good season. He goes and has a good season, stays close enough to his old price this year and not to be seeing in a RMT.

    Fickle lot 🙂

more importantly, he's not fit! and, if this new formation continues, i suspect he'll be rotated out a little more often with nasri, especially given his fatigue over the latter half of last season.

Fair point. I'm very surprised people haven't gotten him in. The reason why myself and most people don't have him though is because of his fitness. May take a couple of weeks for him to get into the starting team.

Definitely. I don't see Kagawa doing much week 1, as he'll have just flown back from Japan and Everton away is a tough fixture. Even if he does score and Nzog does nothing you will be in the same place if you had taken a 4 point hit.

Is this a new idea in rotation ? Or am I just going over old ground?

Rather than having one automatic pick (1 x big hitter), then having two sets of rotators (2 x 2), might it be an idea to start with your two sets of rotators, then find which weeks you can't field 3 against decent opposition, and get a mid price that best fits with those fixtures? In theory, that should give you 3 mid priced players against good opposition for most games, for cheaper than the more conventional strategies.

NB This only works if you you view rotation as I do, looking at the fixture difficulties (of which home/away is a factor), rather than just basing it on home/away.

Have you seen my write up for defensive strategies. It outlines the 3 conventional types such as the one you mentioned plus the 2 big hitters and 3 rotation. And the super cheap 5 way rotation defense.

My proposal was to be more freestyle having a mix of cheap and expensive and mid priced based on fixtures and only loosely on rotation according to fixtures rather than home/away.

Who are the most nailed on big hitting attacking midfielders out there? Here is my list with a rough percentage of nailed on-ness. Only Bale is 100% nailed on for the first week in my book. (Note Chelsea players as if they only had one fixture)

    Bale 100%

i suspect some games vdv will either be dropped or play on the right as an inside forward, with siggy playing in the hole, and other games siggy will play behind vdv. it's a bit too risky for me atm either way.

This vdV and/or Siggy thing would be down to what AVB wants with his right flank. We all know vdV doesn't want to play there, 'Arry played him there anyway, and vdV drifted inside all the time.

If the new gaffer decided to play both of them centrally (CAM/CM) then Lennon would be rather tempting.

i some times think tevez is better....
when he is ultra fit he is world class,
as is augero whose perhaps work off the field is more to be admired.
        But
2.5mil difference is huge! if tevez stuffs up then Balotelli will start, straight swap.

How many times will Aguero sit so Balotelli and Tevez can play together? Not as many as Tevez sits to pair Aguero and Balotelli. That's why I think Aguero will outscore Tevez. But I'm getting both Tevez and Aguero on my team.

After a couple of massive overhauls

    Federici - Friedel
Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Hangeland - Demel, Tierney
Bale, Yaya, Ramires, N'Zogbia - Dyer
    Torres, Tevez, Petric

    3.0m in bank
Thought about upgrading Dyer to Michu/McClean/Pienaar and leaving 2.0m in bank. But reluctant to commit too much on mids and leaving the frontline less flexible.

    Hey guys

Which combo do you think is better?

    A. Sinclair + Podolski + 0.5m
    B. Silva + Graham
    C. Nasri + Graham + 1.5m.

I will only think about bringing in Podolski if RVP leaves. So if this is not decided in the next 4-5 days, I will def be going with Graham.

lamps is my favoured chelsea mid for gw1. not sure about arsenal.... they normally jump out of the blocks, but they have tough fixtures to come shortly, and i'm not QUITE sure how they'll line up yet (obviously the assumption is cazorla in the middle and walcott on the right, but is that a certainty? what if he tries to accomodate both rvp and giroud, for example, or plays ramsey, or etc)

This is what I have done, and it seems you are in the same boat (i.e. wanting Villa/ Swansea attacking coverage due to their good opening fixtures). I've gone with Graham and N'Zogbia as they are cheaper than Bent and Dyer, for example, and I'd bet the former pair will outscore the latter. Bent will outscore N'Zogbia (as he should do... 8.5 vs 6.5) but I fancy N'Zog to be assisting Bent quite often.

I’m fascinated by the different defensive rotation tactics out there. I see 3 conventional types and one alternative. There are strengths and weaknesses in all but I think the 4th alternative type could be the way to go

    1) Two big hitters and a rotating 3. ( 2ex…… a-b-c)

This tactic is reliable but does use up money. The good thing about a rotating 3 for the remaining spot means you can generally get very good fixtures every week. For me its a good tactic provided you don’t already have an expensive keeper. Too much spent in defence will limit your attack

    2) One big hitter and a rotating 4 home and away. ( 1ex……..a-b, a-b)

The strength in this is its simplicity, home fixtures and its potential to last till the next WC etc. However it does rely on nothing going wrong and is inflexible as a result. If one of the defences fail to impress the plan in one rotating pair fails. Then it limits your options in finding a replacement that rotates well with the remaining player. It also fails to hold up if one of the defenses keep clean sheets away from home, as much, or more often as they do at home. Eg. West Ham last season.

    3) Budget defence (2ch…..a,b,c), (1ch……a-b, a-b),

Using cheap defenders who have strong fixtures every week (eg. Swansea, Fulham), while rotating other cheap options using plan 1 or 2.

This is a very cheap alternative and it can score well. However it does require serious planning and will most likely use up more transfers.

In conclusion I see a correlation. I expect that the big hitting expensive defence will use up less transfers over the course of the season. Whereas despite savings in money for cheaper defences I’d expect that they would require more hands on management and more transfers as a result.

    ———

The 4th type would be something more freestyle. Its a mysterious catagory that is entirely based on flexibility. Good fixtures are important but so is a casual rotation based on fixtures rather than home and away rotation. A nice balance of cheap, expensive and mid priced options make it easy to make transfers if necessary. This is the option I prefer. Hopefully it works out

I think the main point is in my conclusion of the 3 main types. Do you want to save money and spend more transfers or do you want to save transfers and spend more money?

i have something knid of different
      Vidic/Kompany/Jose E +Hangeland/Clyne
also rotating with Noble/Allen/Maloney in the mids and petric up front
      so i can play a 3-4-3
      or a 3-5-2
      as well as a 4-3-3
      or a 4-4-2
Free Form and flexibilty but, i kind of have 2 Nailed on every week
      (GK is Hart and Gazzaniga)

invest too much in defence. if you got Vidic/Kom/Jose, then you should get 2 4M Def, downgrade Hangeland

          no.
          i shouldn't
start of season are fine for CSs its the end in which you should have cheapies

Also IT IS A ROTATION with noble allen and maloney and it works very well.....

this general consensus about not having a good defense is just a way of getting more people to have similar teams.
          I only trust
LIV/MANU.MANC this year... they're defences are expensive but will pay off.
I trust to an extent Ful at home
if anything i was almost going to upgrade clyne to cuellar with the 1mil i have in the bank.
and perhaps maloney to dyer though i feel swansea will be massive under performers now without BR.

Yeah that is a bit alternative. 3 main defenders with a possible 4th. For me its too much invested in defense. I think it is better to invest as much in your attack as you can because ultimately attackers are better value in the long term

          I agree, to an extent
the thing is at the start of the season, for me at least it is hard to see who will be a good scorer and who will not
          defenses are usually pretty predictable
looking at play style quality/ quantity of possession and how much they commit forward while they are in possesion (City hold so much this isn't really an issue plus they have VK standing back.)

so for the first couple of weeks i plan on going heavy back and hoping for a lot of dull 1-0s
and hopefully Liverpool step up and allow me to invest in a 3rd and final Liverpool player (Probably Suarez)
i can't see myself touching the RoonPig/RVP until after transfer window, or RVP has gone elsewhere, Augero is 2.5 more than tevez.... so i've had tevez (For a while)
torres is quality and part of a team i can't see doing much defending
and Petric looks good in a rotation avioding those brutal away games and home games where the result looks to be 1-0.

Also i have Bale/Kagawa because i like to have 1 punt haha so Kagawa is it.
and bale is a proven scorer.....

    Any glaring problems here?

    DDG Fed
    Cole Terry Hang Fabio Cuellar
    Bale Kagawa Yaya Pienaar Guthrie
    Tevez Torres Graham

4 point hit for GW 2 = Torres -> Rooney & Terry to a 5.0 or cheaper defender to be named (probably from Newcastle)

    Cheers.

More money on defence than I like, but those are three solid defenders. Leaves the midfield too weak for my liking. I would downgrade a defender and upgrade a mid or two. Excelllent strikers.

Thanks LWO. Yeh I had the same concern initially but I just cant seem to find any value in the midfield. I plan to do Lamps to Bale in gameweek 2 but that's about it.

United - Kagawa, Valencia, Young and Nani - not sure who will start and at which position. Too risky to spend so much money on a midfielder that may not play.

Chelsea - same problem as United.

City - Initially I had the combo of Graham and Silva. However, I was told that Silva might not play gameweek 1 and that really puts me off.

Arsenal - I like Cazorla but he is too new for me to invest that much money.

Liverpool - shit fixtures and besides Stevie I don't see anyone worth investing in.

Any recommendations for some decent midfielders?

The 3 Spurs guys will all be solid picks. I think Valencia will be the one to start with from United. No Euro involvement and the most consistent of the 3 wingers, and probably SAF's most favoured. And there's always Dempsey.
