Spot the Differential – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out the Scout Picks on Friday evening, we now turn our attentions to the first Differential article of the new campaign. If you’re new to this, the idea is to highlight certain Fantasy assets with low ownership – typically under 5% – ahead of each Gameweek and wax lyrical over their chances for the fixture ahead. This term we’re concentrating on just one player per Gameweek and, to get the ball rolling, we’ve opted for a proven Premier League goalscorer…

Let’s be honest – last season was a bit of a write-off for Darren Bent. The Villa forward arrived on the back of 41 goals over his previous couple of campaigns but the installation of Alex McLeish to the Villa Park hotseat put paid to the forward’s Fantasy potential, as the midlands outfit attempted to grind out results under the former Birmingham boss. As a result, Villa returned a meagre 37 goals over 2011/12, the second lowest tally in the league and only one more than Stoke; starved of service up top, Bent managed just nine goals before his season was ended in early March due to an ankle injury.

With McLeish now nothing more than a bad memory, Villa fans approach the new season with far greater enthusiasm. New boss Paul Lambert has handed his players a license to attack as he looks to replicate the offensive threat of former club Norwich; the Canaries racked up 52 goals upon their top-flight return under the Scot, a goal haul bettered only by the top six last time round. Already, Bent has been singing the praises of the new man in charge, with a change in tactics set to alter how we assess Villa’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead:

“He wants us to be really dangerous and create loads of chances. He wants us to be an attacking outfit. He has a philosophy where he says: ‘If we’re going to lose, we’re going to lose having a go’. He wants us to have a right good go at every single team. That’s how it should be. We have attacking players in the team who can cause real damage and he’s told them to go out and do their stuff. It’s certainly going to be a dream for me playing that way as a striker.”

Villa roll up to West Ham for their Upton Park opener on the back of decent pre-season form. Lambert’s side have racked up eight goals in their final four fixtures and Bent signed off on summer duties with a smartly-taken brace against Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen – aided by the creativity of Charles N’Zogbia, Brett Holman and Stephen Ireland, he could well be set to spoil Big Sam’s party tomorrow afternoon.

Bearing in mind the Hammers managed just seven clean sheets at home in the Championship last season, Lambert’s men will be anticipating goals. With spot-kick duties in his locker, an ownership currently under 3% and a strong set of fixtures to follow, Bent looks the man most likely to produce as the Villains seek to exorcise the ghost of McLeish with a new-found sense of optimism.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Why not downgrade Kompany & Vidic? Looks too much investment when you have other alternatives, Use the extra cash to improvise Midfield, otherwise, it's a really balanced team

Lescott For Kompany. I think he'll pretty much play every league game, Kompany is over-priced i believe, Am not interested in Allen, Not profitable FPL wise

Liverpool have a tough early schedule, so you may want to rethink Reina. Awfully thin in midfield (Guthrie and Britton will never score more than 3 points in any given week). Maybe drop down from Kompany/Vidic to Lescott/Ferdinand and upgrade the midfield. Alternatively, Graham for Podolski to upgrade the midfield.

I'd go with Cazorla for the first week. That's probably the best chance for him to rack up the points, and if he doesn't show up, just pick up Siggy/VDV or Bale if you have 0.5 in the bank like me.

right then chaps, i think we all know its crunch time!

I would appreciate some pointers on my side if u please? i will also try and help u guys improve your team if u agree with any of my advice?

    ok GW1

    Fed, (DDG)

    Hughes, Zab, Vert, (Stevens, Clyne)

    Ramires, Mata, Dyer, Pienaar, (Noble)

    Rooney, Tev, Torres(c)

Im very happy with that side although i really would like Michu in there instead of Dyer(but he's still my 2nd choice :\ ) I intend 2 swap Mata for Bale GW2 and Torres for an inform striker in GW3!

what do u think? am i missing anything IYO's?

      - Not Zab cos Richards will replace him when he's back

      - You should change one of Ramires or Mata for coverage if Chelsea doesn't do well

      - Not sure why so many people chose Noble, did he do well in the Championship last season (IMO I don't think he'll score many points but just my opinion)

      - Overall others look good

well the reason 4 Zab is that i know he will play for at least 5 games so i looked at who could replace him and im going for Saylor GW5 and swap Stevens for Cuellar so have Newc, Sun perfect Home coverage! Also ye Noble takes all set pieces, corners from the left and peno's! i think he got close 2 double figures in both goals and assists last season( if i remember right it was 9 goals 12 assists?)

Like i said above im moving out Mata and Torres in the space of 2GW's so i wont have many chelsea, just the one incase theyare doing well as they have very nice early fixtures!

ALso Kolarov and clichy is a bigger risk(did u see CS?)

ye thats the plan with the strikers, whoevers in-form and >£10M!

I like Fed for the stoke homegame, if u read some of the scout casts they say about reading keeping 12 clenies in 23 home games last season and stoke were the lowest scorers last season away from home! Also stoke havnt really changed much 2 make me think they will be any more dangerous? With the chelsea game i hope he just gets some save points, im hoping he'll score at least 8pts?

Usually I wouldn't promote another site on here, but seen as though Paddypower seem to be affliated with FFS I think it is okay

    http://www.paddypower.com/football/football-matches/uk-coupon

Paddy Power are running a money back special this weekend - Your money back on 1st/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast markets if there is a red card in any of the games from TOP 4 Divisions in England from the 17th - 20th.

Am I missing something here? Surely there will be a red card somewhere? It wouldn't surprise me if we saw the first red card pop up on the Gillette Soccer Saturday rolling news feed within the first 5 minutes.

This seems like a free bet to me then - guaranteed money back. But the bookies aren't stupid - what is the catch here?

          a market is the odds
          I.E
lets say i open a "Market" on Manu Vs Man City DNB(Draw No Bet, which means money back if there is a draw, i chose this market because of only 2 variables so it's easier to explain)
100% market is where the value is = to if both variables played off eachothers odds
          I.E 2.00$ each
          however what u'll see is
          1.93$ city
          1.93$ united
(disregard the fact of the odds would be different)
a place that offers a promotion is trying to get u to invest money, once u got money in an account ur bound to punt it!
so they offer a promo deal
but instead of getting the aforementioned odds they change the market to
          1.83$ each, covering themselves
it is much easier to hide the Marker inflations and skews if there are more variables (not 100% market is for when there is 1 possible winner)
top 4 betting the market at its purest state would be 400%

if ur looking for the best odds, u should look into other websites
i am only 17 so im not allowed to bet as such. Anyways, if u were to bet on BETFAIR they show what % the market is
then cross refrence that with other big bookmakers

Yeah I'm 99% sure it just means irrespective of what game you are betting in (i.e. any game across all the divisions) if a player gets sent off in the specific game u bet on then u get the money back, if it was just a red card in any match thats ridiculously likely

If your in the UK go to bed. Bad decisions are made when your tired. Chances are your team is sorted and your now just tinkering with alternatives. Do the right thing and just leave it.

My team seems to have not changed in the last 2 days so it seems I'm set.

    Federici - Jussi
    A.Cole - Vertonghen - Hangeland - (Fabio - Clyne)
    Bale - Mata - Cazorla - Y.Toure - (Nolan)
    Tevez - Bent - Graham

Had Bent in my team from the get-go, so I hope this article doesn't reduce his differential material too much. No City defensive coverage as I like Vertonghen and Hangeland as goal threats over trying to get Zabaleta in there.

    Any major blunders?

The only think I would say is that you will need to get rid of cole before GW3. As this is the case I think its better to go with Ivanovic who is more of a goal threat. Otherwise your team is sorted, your midfield in particular is very impressive.
