The Technical Area – United Under Analysis

A couple of Gameweeks into the new season and Sir Alex Ferguson has been tinkering with his up front options already, handing Fantasy managers plenty to consider. For the weekend visit of Fulham, the United boss retained just one of his four attacking players –Shinji Kagawa – from the side that lost to Everton in Gameweek 1; a sign, perhaps, of what may unfold over the campaign.

There’s little doubt Kagawa has settled quickly into his new surroundings. With his manager admitting the idea of starting both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie for the Fulham match was “too much of a risk” due to fitness issues, the Japanese star was an automatic selection for the role in “the hole” against Martin Jol’s side.

Prior to the match against the Cottagers, Ferguson lavished praise upon Kagawa, indicating he expects a significant attacking contribution from the Japanese star over the course of the current campaign:

I would also include Shinji Kagawa in the [goalscoring] mix because he is very much an attacking player, nominally from midfield but perfectly capable of taking a front role. One thing for sure is that he will add a scoring dimension if he plays central midfield, as he showed last season for Borussia Dortmund. We have been low on goals from midfield in recent seasons. There was a time when Bryan Robson would give you a dozen through the centre of the park and Paul Scholes in his heyday was good for 10 or so but lately we haven’t seen that kind of tally.I believe that Kagawa will put that right, which with the addition of Van Persie to the team, should ensure that we don’t lose any more titles on goal difference.

With Rooney now ruled out for the next few matches with a thigh injury, Kagawa could be set to forge a partnership with Van Persie up front for United – as a result, we take a look at the club’s first two matches to ascertain just where, if any, the difference lay in the respective performances.

Average Positions

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Looking at the average position map from the two games, the similarity between Kagawa and Rooney at Everton is striking. In the Goodison encounter (left), Kagawa (26) and Rooney (10) were almost in identical positions when in possession – the latter’s propensity to drop back and influence the game from a deeper position dampened the side’s attacking edge. Nani (17) also played a part here, too; starting on the right wing, the Portuguese star continually came inside when on the ball, affording Kagawa little space to dictate matters in “the hole”.

Compared to the Fulham game (right), the difference is obvious. Antonio Valencia (7) hogged the touchline far more than Nani managed at Everton, while Robin Van Persie (20) took up a more advanced position than Rooney in the lone forward role. These two factors combined allowed Kagawa a far greater in the middle of the park and afforded United a superior attacking edge. Indeed, Kagawa’s average position against Fulham is the same as Rooney’s at Everton; a definite sign that the two are perhaps too similar in style to play together as effectively as Kagawa and Van Persie or Rooney and Van Persie.

Kagawa and Rooney

Despite his side having less of the ball against Fulham in comparison to Everton (60.1% v 70% possession), Kagawa managed to register slightly more touches per minute (1.0 to 1.1) against the Cottagers. He also received exactly the same number of passes per minute (1.4) in both games, though his overall totals are obviously affected by the game time in each match –he played the full 90 minutes against the Toffees but made way for Rooney on 67 minutes on Saturday. Regardless of who he plays alongside up front, the Japanese star is likely to see the same amount of the ball, going by the stats so far.

Kagawa (eve)Kagawa (FUL)Rooney (FUL)Van Persie (FUL)Rooney (eve)
Mins/Touch1.11.03.32.21.3
Mins/Pass Rcvd1.11.44.33.31.9

Rooney’s stats, on the other hand, vastly differ over the two games. Against Everton as the lone frontman, he had a touch every 1.3 minutes and received a pass every 1.9 minutes but, coming on as a direct replacement for Kagawa, he failed to impress in “the hole” alongside Van Persie. The game seemed to pass by the United number 10 – with a touch every 3.3 minutes and a pass received every 4.3 minutes, his arrival failed to have the desired effect.

A look at Van Persie’s stats against Fulham highlights the difference in his interpretation of the lone forward role – he had less of a desire to drop back like Rooney against Everton and was resultantly far less involved in the overall play with a touch every 2.2 minutes and a pass received every 3.3 minutes. With more space afforded to Kagawa as a result of Van Persie and Valencia’s presence, the Japanese playmaker managed four shots in the Fulham match, whereas against Everton he failed to register a single attempt.

Nani and Valencia

The battle for the right wing berth is just as pertinent a point. As the respective average position maps highlight, Valencia clearly offers a better balance on the flank and the stats more than back this up. Against Everton, Nani saw the ball once every 1.4 minutes – while that’s not too dissimilar to Valencia’s 1.1 minutes per touch against Fulham, it’s where the likeness ends. Nani made just 28 touches in the Toffees final third over his 78 minutes at Goodison; half Valencia’s 56 in the win over Fulham.

Indeed, the latter was United’s main out ball in the attacking zone against the Cottagers – he received 40 passes and made 29 successful passes in the final third; Nani’s Goodison stats are 16 and 12 respectively, a significant difference.

Mins/TouchFinal 3rd TchPass Rcvd Final 3rdSucc Pass Final 3rdCrossesChances Created
Nani (eve)1.428161280
Valencia (FUL)1.1564029143

The maps below represent the position of origin of each chance created in each of United’s two games so far. The lack of creativity on the right at Everton (left) differs vastly from the Fulham match (right) with Valencia on the flank, with United failing to provide a single scoring opportunity down the right at Goodison. The latter produced 14 crosses against Fulham compared to Nani’s eight at Everton and Valencia also created three goalscoring opportunities in Saturdays’ win – Nani failed to make a single “key pass” against Moyes’ men.

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Nani’s lack of defensive awareness is another factor here and one which could play a part in Ferguson’s thinking. The Portuguese star’s tendency to drift centrally when on the ball resulted in 14 of Everton’s 18 crosses coming from the Toffees left flank, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar benefiting from Nani’s wayward positioning. Fulham, on the other hand, were reduced to just five of their 13 crosses from the same wing with Valencia and Rafael limiting the attacking potential of John Arne Riise and Alex Kacaniklic in comparison. Furthermore, when it comes to goalscoring opportunities, Everton created six from the left on Monday, while Fulham managed just two at the weekend, despite having far more of the ball against United than the Toffees.

The stats certainly suggest that right now, on form at least, Valencia is a far more productive option on the right than Nani and with Kagawa’s partnership alongside Van Persie up front looking strong, Rooney’s injury certainly takes one difficult decision out of Ferguson’s hands.

    Mindless ramblings #3

Sunderland: Shrewd bit of business by O'Neill bringing in Cuellar and Johnson. I rate Fletcher highly too though £14m is way too much. Also rumours that they're going for Clint Dempsey. Seems that MON is building a similar styled team to the one he enjoyed strong league returns with at Villa.
Two dangerous wingers and an attacking mid in Young / Milner / Downing = McClean / Larsson / Johnson.
Then a speedy player playing off a strong centre forward in Agbonlahor / Carew = Sessegnon / Fletcher.
I reckon they'll get a top 8 finish this season if their defense holds up. And in terms of FF MON teams are always gold since he constantly sticks with his same XI until injuries and suspensions force his hand, pretty much why Villa were always so tired and trailed off each season come April.

Spurs: AVB... I know it's early days but I've no faith in the ginger. He's the anti miracle worker - comes into a quality top 4 side, changes the defence around so they start leaking silly chances and goals, never seems to pick his best XI and generally makes peculiar decisions. Nobody knows why he does these things because he bores everyone to tears during his press conferences and interviews. The loss of Modric is massive and it looks as though his system is going to go with two strong central mids Parker & Sandro/Livermore with 3 creative in Bale, Lennon and VDV/Gylfi... which again doesn't seem to me that he's playing to his squad strength, but we shall see.

Having said that Mark Hughes will probably be the first manager out of a job. How many transfers does this guy want, and each one is just as rubbish or average as the previous, it doesn't seem as though he has any plan. It was the same thing when he was in charge at City (though a much lower quality now) when he ended up with a team full of strikers in Tevez, Robinho, Santa Cruz, Jo, Bellamy, Sturridge, Adebayor and i'm probably forgetting some.... point is he never seems to have any plan in mind when signing players, he just buys things for the sake of it he's worse than a woman.
Lambert is the third candidate but he'll probably be given more time than the other two but he really needs to sort that defence out. Letting Collins and Cuellar go was odd, especially given Dunne's injury. Hutton's been told to find a new club (no loss there) and it's probably the same situation with Warnock. None of them great players but quite significant when you gut an entire defence at once.

And finally, anyone who has sold Bale this week in order to buy Hazard is a fool. Fact!!!

MON - agree the blokes all class, even in trackie bottoms.

AVB - agree, I thought I'd give him a chance, I did (two games), but he is busily unsettling a proven squad. I still prefer him to Rednapp though......

Hughes - Agree, still thinks he's at city. He's signed a bunch more players today including Inters aging keeper.

Lambert - disagree, he'll turn it around and they'l become mid table medocrity.

Bale/Hazard - I'm still waiting on him to come good but buying a player thats not going to play to avoid a .1 increase at the expesnse of a decent player who is playing at home is crazy town.

I almost always never wild card early. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm missing out on anything other than team value. Here is my understanding of it

+ives for early WC: A large quantity of players possibly half of those playing the game wild card at this time. This causes dramatic fluctuations in price rises and drops as the popular players all get bought in and the out of form players get discarded. This can be a great time to cash in and increase team value.

-ives for early WC: A well thought out team does not necessarily need a wild card especially if you've got off to a reasonable start. It could then be argued that the best time to use it is when you really need it, that time in the season when your team is going through a slump or when there are DGW's to be cashed in on.

So as a discussion point are people wild carding simply to gain more team value, and is this a valid reason to use the wild card. Or would it be more valuable to use it when you really need to or to cash in on DGW's.

Depends on your team though. I was lucky enough to get off to a good start and have many of the bandwagons already. But even for others you can still get the essential bandwagons for a couple of hits in the first 5 GW's.

I very often WC early, mainly due to getting my picks wrong, thats the only reason to do it in my book is if your teams in bits, 4 non starters and no form players kinda trouble.

I absolutely agree. However most of us more serious folk put a lot of attention into getting the right side together before GW1. So for many on here this should not be an issue. Injuries however can force your hand at any stage of a season. If you had Rooney, Aguero, Terry etc its probably best to WC

Looking at my team, there is essentially 11 players I would like to remove. 2 of them being goalies. Doubt that will happen again this season. Combine that with player price haywire on the ones I want in, and it is really testing my resolve.

Basically I look to do a point hit for McClean → Michu. Sane?

I would use it when you need it, or if you need to catch the rise on a lot of big players without taking a massive points hit.

I'm staying patient this season and taking 4 points for in form players on the rise. I'll build my team value, then wildcard and get a combination of players no one in my mini league can afford, and just break away. Two of my rivals have already used theirs, and I'm only like 17 points from the top 😀

Won my mini league 7 of the last 8 so yea has done me well as a tactic against my opo. Broke 3k last year so pretty happy with that thx.

BTW I didnt say this strategy alone would take you in to the top 100 which I am guessing you would consider overwhelming?

2ks is good. But it is one thing winning your mini league, but the question I am always left with is - and I don't expect that you or any of us necessarily know the answer - does TV really matter that much?

My mate let his team go unmanaged until January last season. Then with a TV of 95 he started playing, and almost beat me every round (in a spell that saw me rise from the 100ks to top 10k). Went from last in his ML, to 2nd in under half a season.

Freak generally Id say, does happen tho, wasnt a ghost ship top of fpl for while last year? In my mind having, off the top of my head, say 3mil or more to play around with come 2nd half of the season compared to not having it is invaluable. Simply put the difference between a shit hot starting 11 with good subs opo to a much weaker team which simply = less points.

                108mil vs 102mil.

Also you are generally gona be transferring quality in to your team anyway. I dont go mad for it but if I like the player he is in.

Maybe the idea is to get to 105mil, with that we can all have a sqaud we like and good enough to compete, then it is back to just managing the side.

Before I sleep now I'll just leave a recommendation for one of my favourite players - Ben Arfa. It's not exactly impartial, but I hope it'll reveal more about him. That he's not a Taarabt, for a start.

He had two seasons last year, basically. One half when he was impatiently waiting to get into the team on the right of a 4-4-2 but Obertan and I think Ryan Taylor were blocking his way. Flashes of brilliance, such as his George Best goal in the cup but not an FPL option. Not happy on the bench and wondering why he wasn't being played. Which is kind of the right response, actually.

The other half when he finally got in. So attacking was he, that he forced a change of formation and ended up playing out of position as the right forward in a 4-3-3. Utter destruction followed, a George Best goal against Bolton in the league, goals and assists all over the place. He's not known as the 'Geordie Messi' for nothing.

Workrate is not something to be worried about with Ben Arfa, despite the moody French stereotype. Pardew has motivated him and turned him into an extremely energetic team player who chases lost causes. His trademark repeated dribbles away to Chelsea when Newcastle were being dominated by a better team were indicative of his never-say-die attitude and he was comfortably their most dangerous player.

You needn't worry about him being too unselfish to get you points, though. When on the ball he goes straight for goal and has the ability and confidence to dribble past anyone.

Having some similarities in his direct approach, I see his points potential as close to Eden Hazard at more than 2m cheaper.

    Good night all!

I have Kagawa, Hazard, Michu, Yaya, Noble

Will keep that for a long time I hope, as I can't really afford Bale. Noble > Bale would be fantastic of course, but that's beyond impossible.

I agree on all those points. You also pointed out though (and this is important) that there is a need for him to be motivated. Those months sitting on the bench motivated him, I wonder if he could fall back into his old ways taking his position for granted and not chasing back on defence. Could he then loose his place as Newcastle consider accommodating both Ba and Cisse in a two pronged attack in a traditional 442 formation?

Fellani goals are based on his position up front and his height. Of all the quick risers in tenths of point value, I'd guess he might be first to fade. I do love to watch him play up front and hope he stays.

9 rises and 41 falls. Wow, that seems like a huge amount for a Monday.

.... Looks like everyone is focusing on getting the five essential players, which happens (at least over the past three years). Last year was unusual as it all settled more quickly because of two or three weeks of essentially free WC because the site was down an hour before the deadline on GW1. don't remember what happened GW2.

Think last year was slower due to the gw2 wildcard. Everyone bought the "essentials" ie Silva, Young etc and thus wasn't that much movement on gw3 since everyone got their team pretty settled.

Yes, . three years ago that happened to Malouda, who was sort of like Hazard or Michu. I think it was over ten weeks before Malouda faded and he was up almost 1.5 by then. If you didn't have Malouda, you had to hope to catch another in form bandwagon both for points and the increase in value.

Very doable, I did this last season, or was it the one before... Anyway.. without Silva when he was on fire. Did me no harm at all. That said, he looks irresistible to me. 🙂

OK, I took a hit to get Hazard a few days ago, which is risky for lots of reasons. Such a gap until he next plays in the EPL... games in between... injury chance. That said, he is kind of essential to the way Chelsea will play with Lampard out a lot more. Reminds me of Malouda's run three years ago.

OTOH, I think you could wait for Dempsey to land somewhere and pick him at probably 9.2 or 9.3 and do well. and Bale, if you have him, will (should) sometime catch fire.

I have a feeling that Torres, if he starts consistently (which is likely if they don't sign another striker) will cover a lot of Hazards points, So far Hazard has scored 1 goal which was a penalty, thanks to Lampard not being on the pitch. His main asset of course is assists, and if that trend continues Torres will be on the end of 70% of these I'd imagine. So basically I think Torres might be great cover unless Hazard exceeds all expectations and starts scoring hatricks every week.

Went ahead and brought Ben Arfa and Tevez in tonight, hoping it's a decent gamble as it was a -4 hit. I resisted the wildcard because I don't think drastic measures needed to be taken, this is my team for GW3, It's obviously a bit weak looking but feel its better than knee-jerking with a WC and regretting it.

    Al Habsi (STO)
Boyce (STO) Collins (FUL) Lescott (QPR)
Mclean (swa) Pienaar (wba) Kagawa (sou) Nasri (QPR) Ben Arfa (AV)
    Tevez(c) (QPR) Giroud (liv)
