Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

Berbatov or Fletcher in the 3rd striker role? 😕

Leaning towards Fletcher in hope of imminent double GW for Sunderland announcement soon.

Same dilemma. It's a tough one, that's for sure. Fletcher did a lot of scoring even when he was at Wolves with not much talent to help him. Now he's at Sunderland with McClean & AJ to give him the ball. But then Berba is a former golden boot winner.

Depends in what personal terms we're agreed, if part of the deal for Lloris was instant fist team football, then he will be far from pleased. Friedel had been playing well prior to him been bought.

Why would you even say that about France No1 goalie, you paid over £10M for him, and he's a class keeper anyway. Why would Friedel be 1st choice ?AVB's choice are beyond my understanding sometimes, and his communication isn't always that good.

I'm a right soft touch and as such I've been a big fat apologist for AVB but even I'm losing patience with him. He's obviously either on crack or he's a congenital prick. Either way, not good for FPL.

Did that really happen though? The media don't like AVB, so it seems to me, at all. A bullshit/unsettling story perchance?

Anyway, if it's true, Friedel, from what I saw of the highlights, was brilliant last weekend so it'd be a bit harsh to drop him straight after that.

Truth. He will sooner or later show his diminishing physical abilities, but it seems AVB has decided that starting 11 berths can only be won and lost on the actual match day. Fortunately, and in a parallel to the keeper situation, Defoe had an absolute stinker versus Norwich, so hopefully we can do the sensible thing now with Ade up front.

AVB is living off one (yes one VERY) good season with Porto, when he was lucky enough to have Moutinho Hulk Falcao etc, the "system" suited them in the fairly average Portugese league, but won't cut it here, or with the players he has.

AVB is trying to play a brand of football that produces 2-0 results. It was terrible watching Chelsea last year, now great to watch them play. Last year loved watching Tot, the last two games I was close to reading a book instead. He has a fantastic exciting squad yet he is trying to contain them! fark that let them run a muck! not having any Tot players in my team for the time being, none on the radar either (just got rid of Bale)

It's a tricky one mate. On paper, no you are not mad. Yaya is very consistent (more than any other midfield imo), and Hazard looks on fire.
BUT ... Bale can literally burst anytime and get you a nice 15 pts in one GW. Kagawa plays for a fairly attacking team and he will get assists and shots on goal.

So, I would say no it isn't mad and you should probably do it. But don't beat yourself up when you see Bale getting a brace.

could be and if you have no other chelsea cover than id get him for next GW. I must be the only idiot going without him and RVP but already got Lamps and wont make the sideways move before Hazard gets a blank which is imminent

No-one can deny he's class and if he starts being the regular penalty taker, he'll b priced out of your budget

OK, I took a 4 point hit last night and did:
    Noble > Guthrie, to fund
    Bale > Hazard

    Thoughts on team?

    Friedel (Federici)
    Clichy Hangeland A.Cole (Clyne Cuellar)
    Hazard Yaya Michu Guthrie (Nzogbia)
    Tevez RVP Graham

I just have to hope Clichy is back in the side and A.Cole's ankle is fine by GW4. Reading hopefully have their DGW soonish.

Let's discuss the price of the new players added to the game.

I'll start with Lloris. 6.0. 0.5 too much IMO.

Maicon. 6.5. Thought it would be that price.

Gaston Ramirez. 6.0. As expected. Same as Lallana.

Pablo Hernandez. 6.5. First thought was yikes, but when you think about it, it's probably just about right.

Esteban Granero. 5.0. Tempting. This guy has serious potential.

Stephen Mbia. 5.0. Mention him because he is listed as a defender but has played defensive midfield. Comfortable as either. Doesn't score many goals, but he could be a defender playing in midfield.

      Lloris is too much
Maicon too much unless he somehow manages to get himself nailed on(seems unlikely)- could be a nice pick in the CL dough I think he will play most games there.
Gaston Ramirez-I wont look beyond Lambert, Lallana, or Pucheon for Southampton cover
Pablo is too much(if you think about it than Sinc was 7 with pens in his bag)
Granero is 5.5 and looked good(set piceces and all) but too defensive IMO to be worth it
Mbia- QPR in general is a black hole for now.

Agreed on lloris when degea is the same and she be better long term

Maicon is a massive rotation risk ala clichy/kolarov

We will wait on gaston, doesn't seem right he went to saints in the 1st place?

Pablo should be staedy but just imagine if swansea had a decent striker!

I thought granero was 5.5? Wouldn't touch qpr with a barge pole tho, so that includes mbia

maicon should be 6, same as zab!
hernandez is at 6.5 because of the low price michu started at and now he is increasing every two days lol.
lloris is fine at 6.0 (friedel was close to a bargain)

Today is a good day. After literally seconds of deliberation, I pulled the trigger early this GW and N'Zogbia is now a former player of mine :D. Still can't believe I had faith in him after his poor showing last season...and every season apart from the last few matches in 2010/11. He is not underachieving, just utter crap. Rant over.

I've made some changes already (taking an 8 point hit). If injuries happen at internationals and I need to make further changes, can I WC and therefore take 0 hit, or will the 8pt hit still stand?

How is my team? I'm on WC so are there any more changes to make?
    Mignolet
    Cuellar--Williams-McAuley
    Hazard--Michu--Pienaar--Ben Arfa
    Torres--Tevez--Van Persie
    Subs: Harte, Demel, Routledge
    Bank: 0.2m
With the new Hernandez guy, will Routledge still play. If he is not then I will Routledge-->Guthrie

    Gameweek 4 dilemma:

    P.Cisse > Berbatov

    or

    P.Cisse + Podolski > RVP + DiSanto/ Saha? (4 pt hit)

ie keep it stable for one more week, or get in RVP?

Thoughts, wise people of FFS? 🙂
