Watchlist

The Watchlist – Rickie Lambert

Rickie Lambert fitted the pre-season bargain profile perfectly. He came armed with a record that more that suggested he’d be a prime Fantasy talent; a monopoly of Southampton’s attacking output that saw him fetch 27 goals and 14 assists, an involvement in almost half of their goals as the Saints swept to automatic promotion from the Championship.

The optimism surrounding Lambert’s potential took an early jolt, only to be resurrected almost immediately. Saints’ boss Nigel Adkins tinkered with his lineup for their opening fixture at Man City, leaving Lambert straining on the leash from the subs bench. Belatedly, he made his Premier League bow as a second half sub and coolly stroked home an equaliser before the Saints eventually succumbed to a marauding City.

A disappointing blank in the 2-0 home defeat to Wigan quelled the enthusiasm but Lambert was back in the side and on the scoresheet in the St Mary’s encounter with United. Lambert couldn’t prevent another defeat but not before contributing a towering header and a smart assist in the dramatic 3-2 setback.

In short, then, Lambert has already delivered on the top flight stage against two of the so-called toughest defences. Having proven his value to Southampton and his pivotal role in their attacking ambitions, it stands to reason that Lambert will get further opportunities to flourish now that the fixture list is brightening for Adkins’ men.

While Danny Graham has, so far, failed to capitalise on Swansea’s buoyant start to the season with just one strike, Lambert has sneaked up and, in our Watchlist rankings at least, now superseded him as the budget striker option of choice. Graham still holds the advantage in terms of ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game (7.3% vs 5.8%) but that could be set to change in the coming weeks.

Sadly for Lambert, the landscape up front has now been altered, however. Dimitar Berbatov and Steven Fletcher have both shown enough to have Fantasy managers freeing up funds to slot one of that pair alongside two heavy-hitters. Suddenly the budget striker option has become unfashionable – Graham and Lambert are perhaps off the agenda.

Lambert has the talent and fixtures to overcome this. Southampton have, amongst their defensive failings, bristled with creativity and goal threat, suggesting that they will attack over their forthcoming fixtures. The arrival of Gaston Ramirez, already impressive in his Emirates cameo, only adds to their arsenal to help keep Lambert fed.

With set-pieces and penalties in his locker, the 31-year-old Lambert looks almost certain to be in profit if Adkins can turn his attacking outlook into goals. This potential could yet sway some from the allure of the mid-price prospects on offer. The home clash with Villa will be looked upon as the start of Southampton’s season and could see the Lambert bandwagon revving its engines as another differential comes good.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Strangley I'm doing well so far, but already having doubts about this weekend and further.

Any advice as regards team picking or transfers appreciated. I am debating bringing in Lampard for this weekend instead of Kagowa, as need Chelsea cover and Hazard too expensive. Any opinions welcome ( but be nice )......

    De Gea ( Jaaskeleinen )
Vlaar Figueroa Gibbs ( Cuellar Clyne )
Dyer Cazorla Bale (c) Kagawa ( Kacalinkiic )
    Graham Tevez RVP

I think Lampard is not so much attacking as he was. Though, if Chelsea gets penalties he always gets some points. But I transfered him out this week (I have Hazard).

Are you sure about playing De Gea before Jaaskeleinen?

        Thanks Anguis

I was really just getting Lampard in for pens, as if Hazard or anyone gets assist then at least I'm not falling too far behind. Think Man U will do ok, Liverpool create nothing, but again I know it's a tough derby - I'll bring Jussi in as it's safer. Thanks pal

Not really tbh. I think I've missed that boat. I opted for Mata to start the season and really hurt me. I'll be looking at getting maybe Mata back in or even Oscar once he gets some starts instead for some differential.

Repost for top of page 😉

Took me so long a new post has appeared

So, as requested, JK’s pitchside opinions on Man Utd last night.

    *Caution long post alert*

Utd seemed to start very well as if keen to make a statement after last season. However, after getting the goal they simply seemed to relax, missed too many chances and, Carrick aside, were far too lax in possession. Surprisingly the biggest culprit of this was Paul Scholes, who frankly should have caused us to concede a penalty. Once again United had the supposedly useless David de Gea to thank for the victory. My thoughts on the players

DDG – Restored to the side DDG did very liitle wrong. He commanded his area very well and look confident claiming crosses. Further his double save towards the end was astounding, especially the 2nd, to pick himself up so quickly to make such a brilliant 2nd save was superb, and something I’m not sure Lindegaard could have done. IMO he needs a run of games. The general argument againsy him is that he is not used to English game. This may be true, but if he is not gonna play, how will get used to it. IMO he needs to be given a run of games, and allowed to make the odd mistake, in the same way as Schmeichel was when he first arrived in order to grow into it. Further more, he needs time to build up an understanding with the defence, especially with Vidic, with whom this was only the 4th game he’d played. Alas Fergie appears to disagree

Rafael – He had a great game IMO. He was a threat going forward, and won the penalty, and has one his best games defensively, he was disciplined and tracked back well without any of usual rashness in the tackle. Hopefully this is the start of something.

Evra. – His best game for a while. Pretty similar to Rafa in his perfomance, good at the back and a threat going forward, Evra appears to heeded the message sent by Mr. A Buttner.

Evans – A solid return for him, unfussed and dealt well with what was thrown at him. Also started a few attacks with some surging runs and some neat tricks

Vidic – Still not up to speed IMO. He is getting better with every game, but he is still re-finding his feet. Was lucky to get away without conceding a peno, but he is starting to command his defence again and looked a threat from set-pieces again.

Valencia – Not a great game by his standards. Although he still showed plenty in terms of beating his man, his crossing was just awful, something I never thought I’d say about this man.

Nani – nani was, well, Nani. Brilliant and infuriating in equal measure. He would beat 3 or 4 men. then promptly give the ball away. Missed a glorious 1 on 1 by being too cocky, and as for peno, well… Although his corners have improved and actually created a couple of chances.

Carrick – Carrick was well, Carrick. Solid but unspectacular. he managed to keep the ball mostly, but was guilty on occasion of dawdling to to long and making life hard for himself, though much of that was down to a lack of options for a pass. Took his goal well, and probably saved the keeper and another penalty, so a good thing all round.

Kagawa – Started brightly, but faded as Gala took control of the midfield. Could have had a peno and looked dangerous breaking forward. I wouldn’t touch him in UCL as he is a forward. But as he gets mire up to speed with United and the pace of the PL I expect much more from him in the 2nd half of the season.

RvP – A poor game. His hold up play was decent but he seemed to have been afflicted by Man Utd syndrome, that is to say, if you can see the goal, pass the ball, unless you can walk it in. There were a couple of occasions where RvP passed the ball in good positions, where the RvP of last year would have blasted it in. The fact that Nani took the peno when he was on the pitch may indicate that he doesn’t want the responsibility. If this is the case, then Rooney, who is now around 2 million less than RvP may become the better option, as if RvP doesn’t want to be the peno taker, you can bet your life Rooney does.

I agree with most of it. Paul Scholes was good in what he was doing. He can’t defend, everyone knows that, but he is the one who gets the ball to the wingers and Kagawa, so he is very vital in our midfield. De Gea is a brilliant keeper but so is Lindegaard. I think it would be unfair to Lindy if De Gea keeps on playing after making such mistakes. De Gea has to prove he deserves the number one spot.
RvP played a bit deep because there was no other striker playing much like he played in a Dutch shirt. In order for RVP to be effective, we need another striker up front with him. About the penalty, Fergie said he expected RVP to take it and said Nani just grabbed the ball and took it. He said he should have made it clear that RVP has to take penos, so I think RVP is our penalty taker from now on.

I agree, and it's damned infuriating. It's the main reason we lost the league on GD last year, City were far more ruthless. It was the reason RvP was bought, yet he now has the same problem. No one in the United team shoots, bar Nani, and i wish he wouldn't.

    Zabaleta Ivanovic Cuellar Fabio Clyne

    Hazard Yaya Michu Pienaar Maloney

    RVP Tevez Graham

    Cole, Hangeland, Mertesacker, Demel, Bertrand
    Hazard, Yaya, Michu, Maloney, Noble
    RVP, Tevez, Podolski

I like that front 3 for now. Longer term I would definitely downgrade but it's fine for the next week or two.

Your defence is different to most i've seen on here. Bertrand is a worry long term as Cole will play LB most weeks and Moses will begin to threaten on the left side also plus Mata is due more match time.

Noble > Sterling/Kaca or upgrade him when you downgrade a striker.

How likely is it that Ben Davies will start at the weekend and keep his place over the next 6 gameweeks? I want to get rid of Jenkinson - don't think they'll keep a clean sheet this week and Sagna is back thereafter. Looking for somebody of 4.9 million or less.

Some helpful advice on my defence would be appreciated. Current defence:

    Rafael Ivan Cuellar Gunter Ridgewell

Planning to do Ivan>Baines next week so need to free up some cash. Cuellar or Rafael were looking the fall guys but Cuellar's injury appears to gave made my decision making a lot easier. So, who is the best downgrade option:

    1) Nelsen
    2) Davies
    3) Demel (although already have Jussi so not keen on doubling up
    4) Any other suggestions?

Ok. I think I want to ditch Cuellar. He wont feature for next two relatively easy games (whu and WIG) and then Sunderlands fixtures are a little harder (mci, NEW, sto). Who do I get as a replacement?

    A) Naughton (QPR, mun, AVL)
    B) Billy Jones (RDG, avl, QPR) - a slightly short term option till Reid is fit
    C) Chill, save the transfer and play Rangel (EVE)

Considering a non-RVP WC team and would really appreciate people picking it apart – don’t hold back:
    Jussi / Begovic
    Baines / Ivanovic / Rafael / Demel / Gorkss
    Hazard / Cazorla / Pienaar / HBA / Kaca
    Tevez / Podolski / Defoe
    Bank: 1.2m

Another question as well – pick 2 from 4 (not for this w/end but as part of the above):
    Pienaar
    HBA
    Yaya
    Michu

Davies should stay there, Tate = No CS.

Demel and Ivan have to play. After that toss a coin between Zaba and Hughes.

Midfiled is tough, Maloney could do something, but he could easily be subbed after 60 mins as well.

Wildcards are given to set your team up for the medium term, not just for single week considerations.
Particularly if you are already planning next week's transfer. I like to at least have the delusion that I won't need a transfer the following week. So when the inevitable disaster strikes I'm not suddenly looking at a hit the week after.

Is it worth to take a hit to bring in Ba/Berba for Torres this week?

Don't lose him for a hit. wouldn't want Torres in my team for too long but he is the lone striker in an attacking team at home to Stoke and should get some good chances.

we are all assuming Tevez will be rotated but it remains to be seen if it's enough to warrant selling him. I think he will continue to be a massive player for City this season. Stoke away is a horrible fixture and very much a one off in the PL as is a trip to the Bernabau when normal tactics and personnel need altered.
