Vidic Blow for United

Manchester United have this afternoon confirmed Nemanja Vidic is set to be sidelined for around eight weeks. The Serbian missed Sunday’s trip to Liverpool and while reports had initially suggested he would return for this weekend’s home showdown with Tottenham, they have proven to be way off the mark, as the club announced:

“Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks. Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem. The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks.”

It’s a bitter blow for Ferguson as his side square up to a run of fixtures that pit them against four of last season’s top six in the next five Gameweeks. Faith in the United backline has been dented by a single clean sheet accrued in the opening first five matches and today’s news will only lessen confidence in their ability to nullify opponents.

It’s perhaps a worry for Rafael’s newly-acquired owners – the right-back has been transferred in by over 31,000 FPL managers in the Gameweek so far, second only to Leighton Baines for defenders. If the right-back is to prosper, he’ll likely need to continue the attacking output that has so far harvested two goals in four starts – a tough ask, with games against Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon.

The Vidic news will – once again – promote Jonny Evans in our thinking. The Irishman benefitted from his skipper’s absence last term and looks set to establish himself as a regular in the first XI until the Serbian is ready to return. Bearing in mind that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still injured, there’s virtually no competition for Evans or Rio Ferdinand to worry about. Intriguingly, the two centre-halves and Rafael all come in under 6.0 in FPL – with starts looking assured and rotation threats in goal and at left-back, they seem nailed-on until Ferguson’s injury worries begin to ease.

With a threadbare backline that has struggled so markedly to produce clean sheets, it may well be that Ferguson has no option but to go on the attack in order to win games right now. If the same defensive pattern continues, returns at the back could well be minimal – such a scenario would place even greater reliance on Robin Van Persie and co to produce the goods up top, as United look to ride out what is a potentially difficult period.

Hmmm - I don't know about that. Using the colloquialised form of "Knowing". Using "Fergie" instead of "Sir Alex Ferguson". Smacks of trying too hard to shorten the sentence as much as possible to speed things up but without resorting to obvious stakeclaiming efforts like "First".

Depending on how his stats are I may even captain him against RDG - just because he costs 4.6 doesn't mean he's worth 4.6

Steven Taylor / Hangaland puts me in Gunnarson to Bale territory whith the £3m in the bank, but i'll need to offload jenks in a couple of weeks anyway so on this transfer i was thinkin split the difference (if that makes any sense)??

    Here's a teaser.

I currently have Adam Johnson. Assuming he's fit I'd want to keep him this week for Wigan at home. But let's say he doesn't. It is worth -4 to do Johnson and Tevez to Fellaini and Fletcher. I think I'd want some Sunderland coverage this week and Fletcher or AJ could be great captain options

I was thinking Johnson to Fellaini, unexpected price rise Sunday meant Hazard went instead.

I'm keeping Johnson hoping he plays, but got Sterling benched at the moment (maybe Michu), so may aswell keep even if there is no positive news (I still have a FT).

Tevez to Fletcher is a massive punt though, especially if you bought Tevez early?

I don't think Wigan are that bad either.

Sunderland "could" do well, but also Sunderland have only scored 4 goals all season and Fletcher has them all. Obviously a positive stat from a Fletcher point of view, but not for Sunderland as a unit.

AB, you generally seem quite in the know with all the bonus points malarkey.

How the hell did Berba get 40+ ppi for only an assist? It's not like he had a ridiculous number of shots on target or anything. Just curious about this one, as he could be a right bonus point whore.

Defensive work. Always a winner for forwards - seems to get extra weighting.

Can't quite believe that Berbatov is doing defensive work but there you go...demonstrates how settled and valued he feels.

So who is the better pick between Rafael and Evans? I’m thinking that Rafael has more attacking threat but is more likely to be rotated when Smalling and Jones return. Evans should be nailed on while Vidic is out.

The international break coming up is a bit of a bonus though, for giving a chance to get him and Jones closer to returns.

if you mean past games than just go to the main page- and select the team or the league which fixtures you want to look at- and select Live from there.

Yes he's a differential. Problem is whenever he scores points, Ridgewell and McCauley will get the same + more (for bonus or attacking returns). Very, very rarely will Olsson outscore either. Upside of getting him is he is nailed on if Popov features and his price shouldn't fluctuate much so easy to take out/get back in for fixtures.

Believe it or not, Olsson had the 6th most attempts on goal for a defender last season and was 2nd in attempts in the box with 30. Given he played 33 games that's close to a chance a game.

True he only scored 2 but, with those stats, you'd have to believe he underperformed. I think he's a really good shout.

It's not that Rafael is under threat, it's more that, without Vidic, an upturn in defensive output from United is highly questionable. Rafael is popular off the back of his attacking returns. Can he maintain that? Unlikely.
