Spot the Differential – Gameweek 10

In a frantic Friday packed full of articles, we finally see out the day with our pre-weekend regular. As always, we roll out three overlooked alternatives ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline for your perusal…

Antonio Valencia

Having racked up four goals and 14 assists over 2,124 minutes in the previous campaign, the United winger had proven to be a constant source of Fantasy points for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The Red Devils’ summer acquisition of Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie from Arsenal shifted the spotlight away from the former Wigan man, though, and with Wayne Rooney also in the mix, Valencia has been shifted to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking.

To an extent, it’s understandable. While the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Santi Cazorla dominate the heavyweight attention with eye-catching displays aplenty, Valencia’s highest haul has been just five points. In a campaign already hampered by ankle and foot injuries, the winger has returned to form and fitness and is again hinting at the consistency which served his Fantasy owners so well last time round – Valencia has now provided an assist in each of his last four starts and could well be set to torment Arsenal’s stand-in left-back Andre Santos in tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off.

Priced at 8.6 in FPL and 7.9 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia has an ownership of just 2.7% in the former game and with a strong run of fixtures to follow, looks an enticing differential route into a United side that have already racked up 24 goals, more than any side so far.

Theo Walcott

A hat-trick and a trio of assists in Arsenal’s extraordinary midweek Capital One Cup comeback win at Reading highlighted Walcott’s current form. Having failed to start a single league match since Gameweek 1, he’s been something of an outcast this term but with Gervinho sidelined due to an ankle injury, tomorrow’s encounter at Old Trafford looks likely to hand him a chance to return to the Gunners first XI.

Much has been made over his desire to nail down a central role but Walcott may have to settle for a berth on the right flank, with Aaron Ramsey the man likely to make way now that Jack Wilshere is back to partner Mikel Arteta in the centre. Given the comparative form of Olivier Giroud, though, Wenger may well be tempted to shift Walcott centrally if things aren’t going his side’s way tomorrow and with a home clash against Fulham to follow, he also offers the potential for points next week, too. Priced at 8.7 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, and with an ownership of just 1.2% in FPL, many will be hoping Walcott can return to the form that harvested 169 FPL points in the season gone by.

Wes Hoolahan

There’s no question the season started poorly for the Republic of Ireland international. Paul Lambert’s departure to Villa afforded Chris Hughton the chance to take the Carrow Road reins and with the new boss undecided over his best starting XI, Hoolahan cut a peripheral figure, with a mere 14 minutes game time over Norwich’s first four league fixtures.

Since Gameweek 5, though, the playmaker has started four of the last five and has played every minute from Gameweek 7 onwards. As confidence begins to grow, a 1-0 home win over Arsenal was followed by a draw at Lambert’s new club Villa, with Hoolahan a key figure in last weekend’s match –he provided the assist for Michael Turner’s equaliser and resultantly picking up two bonus points.

Tucked in behind Grant Holt in Hughton’s now-default 4-4-1-1, his creativity is clearly crucial to the Canaries chances as Hughton looks to build on the back of the midweek Capital One Cup win over Spurs. Up against a Stoke side that have managed a single clean sheet in their five away games, and with a trip to Reading to follow next weekend, Hoolahan – coming in at 5.5 in FPL and 6.8 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 0.3% in both games, offers a real mid-price midfield punt ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I've got both and implore people to keep Caz for the long haul. That said, RVP is top priority and if that's the only route then lose the tricky Spaniard.

The only reason why you can get away without RVP until next week is that you have Tevez who is a decent (C) choice.

If you did it now, would it be a 4pt hit or an 8? If 4 do it....just (C) RVP

It would be 8 points to take Caz out and RVP in this week, thats why I'll do it in two instalments.

I guess the real question is should I do Morrison - Caz this week or nxt wk.

Hmmm could work for you, all those transfers just to get back to where you left off does seem a bit wasteful, but if you get the points from it then you can say it was successful...

Yeah, just for their nice trio of fixtures (SUN, rea, NOR). After that things get a little tricky for Everton.

No doubt the above won't happen, but I think it makes my squad a bit stronger and prepares well for the DGW. If Fed isn't back playing by then I may even get Migs in GW13 too!

Best value for money is probably Wilko, seeing as I think all will start and he's the cheapest.

Shawx probably not worth the extra. If you have cash to burn then I'd go for Huth over Shawx

ShawX but you can save 0.5m and get Cam / Wilko although I think WIlko is a Yellow card magnet. CAM if you want to save money, ideally Huth carries the most goal threat but is 5.5m

Im not sure how much goal threat huth really carries over shawcross these days, last year huth got 3 to shawcross' 2 but also got one less assist. I have spare cash but I'd rather save to upgrade a midfielder some time.

I believe in out of cameron and wilki, cameron is more nailed on but obviously is .1 more expensive (probably worth it)

    Evening DZ'ers.

    1FT

    Bego (Jussi)
Verm - Baines - Davies (McCartney Wilson**)
    Sterling - Santi - Mata* - Bale(vc) (Maloney)
    Ba* - Berbs - RVP (C)

    0.0 in the bank.

Having hit 80 points last week and reaching the dizzy heights of 1K rank for GW9 and overall 15K, im more sensitive to taking a 4 point hit.

I have been thinking of doing Wilson > Cuellar all week but now realise he is a doubt. Having read his twitter and MON press conference, i think he will play against his former team. ANyone else bringing him in? I already have Bego and NOR can score at home (As they did vs ARS)

Verm wont keep a clean sheet and neither will Davies or McCartney to i can see them all conceding 2 and returning 1 point each. Is it worth doing
    Wilson > Cuellar
    Davies> Nelsen
for a 4 point hit and starting them both?

Both have a chance of CS and therefore can make the 4 pt hit back up, although a risky strategy.

I want them for the long term (aswell as Verm>Cameron and McCartney>Simpson in a couple of weeks) so that they all rotate well with Baines....

Or shall i just do the one transfer?

My ideal backline would be in 2/3 weeks

    cuellar - simpson - BAINES - cameron - nelsen

either side of BAINES rotate well for a while....

    Feedback appreciated.

No just do Wilson > Nelsen now and start him and Vermaelen...

If you have Vermaelen you have to play him in every game, otherwise it's pointless having him at all...

verm has been dissapointing recently FPL wise, although i am a gooner die hard.

If Cuellar and Nelsen can scrape 12 (-4pt hit) = 8

        surely its better than Verm (1) Cuellar / Nelsen (6) = 7

        Wishful thinking...

i also think its crazy for a hit but could work out similarly whilst getting in 2 of my long term DFs.

Definitely just the one mate. Wouldn't do the cuellar option as thats obviously a risk with his injury this week. Im considering cameron vs shawcross. Is it worth the extra .5m for higher chance of BPs and goals?

Stoke have great fixtures so I think SHAWX will outscore CAM / WILKO over the next 6-8 GWs but you could invest that 0.5 somewhere else for better returns....

I would go with CAM and invest 0.5m somewhere else. Hes nailed on....WILKO will lose his place at some point in the future...

CAM also likly to rise first out of the 2.

      Which Olson twin is it?

In fact nevermind that... Jesus, you have ALL 5 playing at home, that is bad planning...

You should think about playing 4 at the back, and drop Cuellar, since he is the doubt...

If you only play 3, drop Cuellar and Nelsen...

Looking at NEXT week - injuries depending I'm pretty set on Guthrie -> either Fellaini or Pienaar. Probably edging towards Fellaini for his goal threat but I'm wary of his possible suspension looming after I read on here that he's one booking away. However, when you look on fpl it say he's only had 3 bookings (i.e. 2 bookings away). Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

Would have to be Pienaar because of the suspension...having that hanging over Fellaini would put me off as he's likely to miss a game sooner rather than later. It's hard to distinguish who will be the better player to own over the season but I like how Pienaar has been ticking along with the points so far.

Michu is also on 4 and that's what is putting me off buying him right now...as once he gets that suspension he's likely to drop so I'd prefer to wait.

i took a 8 point hit last week and i netted 11 as IVAN got -2, Michu did nothing whereas Bale (c) got me 20 and fletcher did nothing and Ba got me 8. Got 80 points and 15K overall rank now.

        That definitely worked out...

Michu 2, Bale 10... +8 (double for the captaincy)
        Ivanovic -2, Wilson 1... +3
        Fletcher 2, Ba 8... +6
        Hazard 5, Mata 9... +4...

21 - 8 = 13 pt gain... another 10 if you count the extra points for captaincy...

You were unlucky with Wilson which could have been even more sweet for you...
