The Digest – Gameweek 10

We draw a line under Gameweek 10 with a tip of the hat to Everton’s Belgian destroyer, the home form and team work of West Brom and raise questions over whether those who play in “the hole” are forcing a Fantasy rethink…

The Player

Marouane Fellaini notched for the first time since Gameweek 5 in Saturday’s draw at Fulham to serve a timely reminder of his mid-price capabilities. Fellaini’s double at the Cottage, supplemented with three FPL bonus points, earned him a 15 point haul for Gameweek 10 – more than any other player – and rewarded those owners who chose to hold following a recent knee problem.

Fellaini’s omission from the Gameweek 8 trip to QPR saw almost 206,000 Fantasy managers sell him on and with doubts over his availability for the Merseyside derby the following week, a further 117,000 parted company with the Belgian – only for him to recover and supply an assist. Those who sold him on have been somewhat reluctant to bring him back due to the fact that Fellaini is just a single caution away from a one-match ban but his weekend haul highlighted his importance to an Everton side that have now scored 19 goals in the opening 10 Gameweeks – more than the likes of City, Spurs and Arsenal.

His role in “the hole” for the Toffees means Fellaini is a constant menace to opposition backlines, with David Moyes’ tactics getting the best out of his aerial ability in and around the box – indeed, Fellaini has now scored five times, more than Nikica Jelavic. The Belgian’s weekend haul also put clear daylight between him and Steven Pienaar in the battle for the best value Toffees midfielder and despite that imminent one-match suspension hanging over him, Fellaini is clearly back in vogue – 90,000 Fantasy managers have already drafted him in after his weekend exploits. His FPL value is back up to 7.1 and those pondering a move to acquire his services will doubtless be feeling the pull of his rising popularity.

A home clash with Sunderland, a team that have looked more vulnerable in the air than most this term, bodes well for the formidable Fellaini and, should he deliver again and avoid his booking, we will doubtless see another significant rise in the week that follows.

The big question is whether Felliani is a season-keeper. Given his continued form and the struggles of Nikica Jelavic, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll see the Belgian dropped deeper into a traditional midfield role just yet. Indeed, Everton’s attack has been so effective with Fellaini in that role in terms of threat, Moyes seems likely to go with the tactic for the remainder of the season. If that is the case, then Fellaini would seem guaranteed to bring more havoc and return further hauls like the Craven Cottage display.

The Team

Another home game, another win for West Brom. The Baggies have now picked up 15 points in front of their own fans – more than any other side this season – and have registered just one win less at the Hawthorns than the entirety of the previous campaign. Steve Clarke has clearly made a big impression at home, with four Hawthorns clean sheets also accrued, though on their travels it’s been a different matter; his side have returned just two points and three goals over their opening four road trips – only the bottom two have fared worse.

The Baggies sit pretty in fifth right now but with four away trips in their next six (wig, CHE, sun, swa, STO, ars) are set for a testing time over the next few Gameweeks. As mentioned in Scout Notes earlier, Clarke seems to be utilising his squad to great effect; while no one player is the star of this side, plenty have chipped in with crucial contributions – 10 West Brom players have racked up 29 FPL points or more. Indeed, in each of the four classifications, the Baggies have provided us with a player who has returned 40+ FPL points already – Ben Foster, Gareth McAuley, James Morrison and Shane Long.

Bearing in mind that Morrison is the costliest of this quartet, at 6.3 in FPL, it’s a sign of the mid-price appeal of a side that seems to be benefitting from a more open style of play this time round, with Clarke allowing his charges to express themselves with a little more freedom than the previous regime.

The Talking Point

Glance at the top 10 scoring midfielders in FPL and one thing is immediately noticeable – five of the top performers play in “the hole” for their respective clubs. Which begs the question: should there be more variety of player classifications within our Fantasy games? As tactics evolve within the Premier League and the shift towards 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 becomes far more commonplace, would Fantasy games benefit from introducing an “attacking midfielder” bracket?

Fellaini, Kevin Nolan, Santi Cazorla, Michu and James Morrison are all racking up the points from more advanced berths and offer far greater goal threat than the traditional central midfielder type – Fellaini started the season at 6.5, compared to Mikel Arteta’s 8.0 in FPL, for example, despite the fact that the latter sits in front of the Arsenal back-four in a 4-2-3-1. The Belgian’s constant goal threat has seen him so far outperform Nikica Jelavic for the Toffees and while it’s great for Fantasy owners, the variety across our midfields is rapidly decreasing this term with a seemingly obvious and exclusive pool of talent to select from.

There will, of course, be the obvious exception in any given Gameweek but after 10 rounds of matches, those players in “the hole” clearly have an overall advantage. Strategies and tactics would be taken to a whole new level if Fantasy managers were restricted to a maximum of two players from this classification – maybe even take away their ability to earn an extra point for clean sheets and the game would be instantly more intriguing. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but FPL showed they were willing to revise the bonus points last year – a system that places the likes of Sandro and John Obi Mikel in the same player pool as Fellaini and Cazorla could surely be improved upon.

Just a simple "How does my team look?"

    Bego - (Foster)
    Baines - Rafael - Davies - (Cuellar) - (Demel)
    Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Pienaar - (Guthrie)
    RVP - Ba - Berb

0.0 in the bank, 1 free.
Main problems I can see are Guthrie, and I'd prefer Pienaar to be Fellaini. Nothing I can do about that with my funds (or lack thereof) though.

    How's it looking lads? 🙂

what annoys me is things like Ba getting 3 BPs for the 2-2 with Reading. He handled his 2nd goal to score, thereofre surely giving him 0 BPs would have been sensible? Suarez having his goal denied against Everton should have got 3 BPs to compensate for poor officiating. An impartial observer should give the BPs.

I wasn't playing FPL before last season but *apparently* some players, no matter what, were favoured massively..regardless of performance (Adam, I'm looking at you)
I'm with Scroobius, I like the idea of the current system, there just needs to be some tweaks in the actual emphasis of certain stats.

Spot on. Perhaps categorizing the off-target shots could be nice as well. Missing a sitter should be punished, some way or other. In the same way, assisting a missed sitter should be at least as valuable as an assist given by an accident (i.e. Berba this week).

Yeah if you can find an objective measure for what a sitter is I'm fine with that. Attempt from within the box with nobody to beat or within 8 yards with only the keeper to beat? Probably not exactly that but something like that.

I think the game is fine as it is personally. The problem I have with the bonus system is that the stats are incorrect, otherwise I think it's good and I'd rather have it this way than risk them screwing it up by adding that recovered balls shite or whatever.

By incorrect I mean that important PPI stuff like blocks and shots etc are credited to the wrong player a lot.

Firstly I would like a stats (for the sake of objectivity and simplicity) based system, similar to the current one but with some tweaks, but crucially which doesn't take into account anything FPL already awards points for.

Secondly I would like to see BPs awarded for all players reaching certain statistical thresholds, I don't see the logic in restricting it to three players.

    Keeper rotation: yay or nay?
Is it better to carefully pick two rotating keepers, or to stick one man between the posts and let him be?

Begovic and Foster have rotated perfectly so far, home and away wise. Putting whoever is at home in the goal have generated 53 points so far, with GW 7 being the only GW where this strategy has failed (Begovic vs liv: 9 pts and Foster vs QPR: 1 pt).

Ruddy and Jaaskelainen -> 42 pts, although not perfect rotation.

Top keepers so far: Jaaskelainen - 41 and Cech - 43.

Seems like it's better to do some careful planning and play whoever of your combo is playing at home.
    Thoughts?

I agree with the planning route.

Begovic and Jaask rotate perfectly all year - so long as theres no fixture reshuffle.

Begovic and Foster are another excellent choice and rotate home/away for 36 wks this season.

Theres a statistic (if your into stats) that 70% of clean sheets are kept at home so playing the home keeper from a team with a good defense is playing the percentages as it were.

And the important this is theres money saved.
      Hart + 4.5 keeper = 11.5m
Begovic + Jaask = 9m (at start of season prices) Thats 2.5m better spent elsewhere imo

Sadly, statistics don't always reflect reality:

This week I played Schwarzer (EVE) rather than Al Habsi (tot). Schwarzer scored 3, Al Habsi got 7. I lost my head-to-head by 1pt!

That's an anomaly. The more I think about it, the more sound it sounds to have a well-rotating pair.

The stats for any given week are totally meaningless. The stats over a season are something you can draw some accurate conclusions from.

Over the course of the season Schwarzer will score more points in his home games than Al-Habsi will in his away games - I bet you any money

So the only pojnt of u=your post is to moan, it aint helping anyone with their keeper selection

On the topic of Baines, did you know you can do:

Baines + Cuellar > Sagna + Clichy AND come out with 0.7 profit. Food for thought

Baines and anybody all day long. Sagna a good player but Clichy will be rotated all season long

By the end of the season when Baines has 12 clean sheets, 10 assists, bangs in another 4 penos and collects the relevant BP's there wont be another player (let alone defender) near him that had a starting price of 7m

Everton's fixtures are too good and I don't have enough transfers to make that happen. But in week 14-15, I may be leaving planet Baines.

I know it's early in the week, but I'm considering getting rid of either Ben Arfa or Bale for Fellaini. Everton's next three fixtures look awesome. Who would you get rid of? I know Ben Arfa will be the main pick, but Tottenham's next fixtures look tough enough, and the defeat at Wigan didn't do much for the confidence.

Barfa>Fellaini sounds good if you can do it. Keep Bale, he is a big game player and like Damo points out I can't see either the City or Arsenal defences keeping spurs out

I've transferred out Bale for Fellaini this week. I'm pulling the wildcard in four weeks, though, so if it all turns to rats**t, I have a get out.

Should I keep McAuley along with Foster and sell Clyne instead for Cameron? Or should I sell McAuley for Evans/Cameron? My current back five is: Baines, McAuley, Cuellar, Demel, Clyne.

Alreet lads. How did Ramirez look last night? Is it worth taking an extra hit to get him in (or anyone else up to 7m) in my RVP plan, or should I just get in a mid for 5.9m with only one hit? Who?

If you're doing it this week get Lallana, Ramirez looked out of sorts, will probably need a few weeks to get back into it. It didn't help that Adkins played him wide for most of the game..and then subbed him as soon as they switched him behind Rodriguez.

nope, just play one of them everyweek.
Maloney just got assist at Spurs away, while Sterling did nothing vs Newcastle at home.

This is from my weekly Sun DreamTeam newsletter:

As a phrase, 'one man team' is a gem, but it's so often thrown around without any great thought or evidence, usually just after the opposition's 'only half-decent player' (another classic) has scored.

To address this injustice, we've done the research for you. Below are the players with the highest percentage of their club's total Dream Team points, or if you will, the 'one' in their one man team:

            1. Pavel Pogrebnyak - 46 points - 35.7%
            2. Rickie Lambert - 37 - 29.4%
            3. Luis Suarez - 103 - 26.9%
            4. Michu - 6 - 18.5%
            5. The bearded Spaniard (Juan Mata) - 105 - 6.5%

So get Pog and Lambert then - quickly (what a useless and flawed bit of analysis)

I’m playing my WC this week and this is the team that I have at the moment:

            Begovic
            Simpson, Rafael, Cameron
            Ramirez, Valencia, Hazard, Cazorla
            Van Persie, Suarez, Berbatov

            Subs: McCarthy; Gorkss, Clyne, Maloney.

What do you guys think of my team ?

Have you any money spare? For my own tastes it just looks one quality defender light. I would probably switch Berbatov for Kone or Lambert and spend a little more money there. Overall, though, looks good.

I'm very unlikely to be right, though!

Looks nice. Tevez for Suarez. West Ham defender for Clyne - Demel (will be fit soon). McAnuff for Maloney. Cuellar for Simpson.

A crumb of advice, if you would, regarding which three outfield players I should bench for GW10:

            DEF-
            S. Taylor (WHU)
            Gorkss (NOR)
            Ivanovic (LIV)
            Baines (SUN)
            Olsson (wig)

            MID-
            Ben Arfa (WHU)
            Cazorla (FUL)
            Fellaini (SUN)
            Michu (sot)
            Valencia (avl)

            STR-
            Ba (WHU)
            Lambert (SWA)
            Jelavic (SUN)

            Help!!!

Completely forgot about him. I'd avoid due to rotation risk with Routledge/Dyer. Morrison/Ramirez look better options. Michu is the one to have considering he will get quite a few games up front.

He's worth watching but Michu is playing up front at the moment so I am reluctant to get rid. Likewise I don't really have that much confidence in Swansea at the moment to want to double-up on them!

Can see the attraction though, definitely.
