Scout Scribbles – City on the Verge

City scrape a home draw with Ajax thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure but now remain perilously close to crashing out of Europe altogether. Arsenal throw away a two-goal lead in Schalke to earn a point, with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud both finding the net…

Man City 2 Ajax 2
Sergio Aguero came back into the first XI, having been afforded a brief sub role at West Ham last Saturday. Pablo Zabaleta also returned at right-back, with Kolo Toure dropping out, while Javi Garcia was also handed a place in the starting line-up after a recent injury. Maicon was fit enough to return to the bench. In what Roberto Mancini described as a “must-win” game, City managed a draw after clawing back a two-goal deficit – Aguero and Yaya Toure found the net, with Mario Balotelli and Samir Nasri supplying the assists. While Aguero was given the full 90 minutes ahead of Sunday’s game with Spurs, Carlos Tevez’s owners will be happy with his 66th minute withdrawal, as the latter made way for Edin Dzeko.

City remain bottom of Group D and are in real danger of missing out on European progress altogether – six points behind top of the table Dortmund and five behind second placed Real Madrid, Mancini’s side are two points adrift of Ajax, with games against the top two remaining. Post-match, Mancini was in a defiant mood…

“If we win two games, get eight points and go through, we can win the Champions League, it’s simple – if our destiny is this then we should win the Champions League.”

While City’s failure to progress even to the Europa League would be seen as disastrous around the Etihad, from a Fantasy perspective it makes their assets far more appealing – City are also out of the Capital One Cup and would surely be set for far less rotation, with Mancini’s main focus the Premier League if his side do indeed crash out altogether at the first hurdle.

City Starting XI: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia (Balotelli 46), Barry (Kolarov 85), Yaya Toure, Nasri, Tevez (Dzeko 66), Aguero

Schalke 2 Arsenal 2
With Gervinho still unavailable due to an ankle injury, Theo Walcott was handed a rare start on the Arsenal right and vindicated Arsene Wenger’s faith by opening the scoring for the visitors. Olivier Giroud kept the lone striker role and notched the Gunners’ second thanks to a Lukas Podolski assist, while in a defensive reshuffle, Thomas Vermaelen moved to left-back and Laurent Koscielny returned to the heart of the back-four; the much-maligned Andre Santos dropped out. Bacary Sagna started yet again at the expense of Carl Jenkinson at right-back; the fit-again Frenchman is clearly well ahead of the former Charlton man in the pecking order.

Arsenal Starting XI: Mannone, Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Arteta, Wilshere, Walcott, Cazorla (Coquelin 90), Podolski (Santos 90), Giroud

Prior to the match, Wenger revealed he has been utilising Walcott sparingly due to an illnness but with Aaron Ramsey – if fit – set to fill in for the suspended Jack Wilshere in central midfield against Fulham this weekend, Walcott’s display last night will surely have nailed-down a starting role on the right against the Cottagers. Wenger had this to say on Walcott’s display last night…

“He did well, very well. He had a positive attitude and was fresh as well. He was the only one you always felt could make a difference and it was no coincidence he had the chance in the final minute”.

Walcott himself has no doubt that his recent performances warrant regular starts….

“I just want to play – hopefully now I can get a run in the team because I feel I fully deserve it”

However, when questioned on Walcott’s potential role as a striker, Wenger indicated that he is likely to continue to utilise Walcott in a flanking role, with Podolski also playing wide of Olivier Giroud up front…

“Well, a winger is a striker. Not for you? Giroud has Walcott and Podolski with him. We scored two goals. We had more chances and played with three offensive midfielders as well. At some stage, we have to put one or two defenders in the team as well.”

Giroud spoke to the press before last night’s match, giving an indication of his self-belief heading into the Schalke encounter:

“Scoring goals is an obsession for me, and probably for all strikers. I must admit, I’ve had a little bit of a difficult start but the boss and the coaches trust in me and just say, ‘Don’t worry, the goals will come soon. Continue to work hard in training – you have the right qualities’. I’m keeping confident and continuing to work hard. I scored many goals early on in my career, and when you score it obviously makes you feel better.
But I’m happy at the moment, and I feel I did well when I came on against Reading in the League Cup. So everything is OK, I just need to keep working hard.”

Slated by many after managing a single goal in the opening 10 Gameweeks of the domestic season, the Frenchman’s goal will perhaps persuade Fantasy managers of his abilities ahead of a strong upcoming run of fixtures. A glance at the season ticker shows Wenger’s side have just one decidedly tricky match to navigate (away to Everton in Gameweek 14) between now and Gameweek 21. If he can continue in the same vein, it’s good news for Santi Cazorla’s owners, too; the playmaker has laid on a multitude of chances for his team-mates this term but has so far picked up just two assists due to inept finishing by others.

In Other News
Matt Taylor could be set for a quick return to action for West Ham this weekend. The former Bolton man had started four of the Hammers’ first five but has been bothered by a calf injury in recent matches – with major question marks still hanging over the likes of James Collins, Guy Demel and James Tomkins, Taylor’s possible return is something of a relief for Sam Allardyce as West Ham brace themselves for a run of fixtures that pits them against seven of the top 10 in the next nine Gameweeks.

Richard Dunne has edged towards a comeback for Villa after returning to training earlier this week. The centre-half has yet to feature under new boss Paul Lambert this season after undergoing two operations to resolve a groin injury sustained at Euro 2012, though Lambert was understandably cautious when asked whether the Irishman will be back in the first-team anytime soon:

“Richard is back in training and it’s his first time since the European Championships, really. Will he be back soon? I’m not sure really because he’s got to get up to speed with training and get some games under his belt. He’s still a wee bit away”

Swansea’s Chico Flores is hoping to be fit to face Southampton at the weekend. The Spaniard missed the 1-1 draw with Chelsea with a hamstring injury and Michael Laudrup is being cautious of his chances of being in contention…

“I don’t know yet whether Chico will make it, but I think from my experience that his injury would normally keep you out for seven days…Hopefully he will train on Wednesday or Thursday. We can never know for sure, but I hope he has a good chance to make it.”

Reading’s young stopper, Alex McCarthy, has emerged as a definite doubt for their crucial home clash with Norwich at the weekend, having suffered a shoulder injury in his sprawling dive to Djibril Cisse’s late effort on Sunday’s draw with QPR. McCarthy tweeted an update only yesterday…

“Shoulder is feeling better today, but results didn’t come back as I wanted. Going to see shoulder specialist tonight to see what outcome is!”

With Adam Federici fit to return, this could now hand the Australian a lifeline and deny McCarthy a continued run in the side. McCarthy was listed as a 4.0 keeper prospect in the Fantasy Premier League game and has attracted enough interest to rise to 4.1. His new owners now face an anxious wait to see if he can make the weekend clash.

does anyone else have Mata and Hazard? I don't know whether this is overkill and I should pick one or the other. However they're the two top scoring midfielders, so does it make sense to have them both. I'd get rid of Hazard rather than Mata to free up money, but who to?

I would be rather amused if people had Mata Hazard & Rooney RVP. That would be quite something. For me I don't like the idea of too many expensive eggs in one basket.

I had the 2 of them but did Hazard -> Cazorla a few weeks back. I think its overkill considering fixtures. It all depends on your other players though. I would do Hazard to Walcott or Cazorla if you dont have Arsenal cover.

If Walcott was nailed on I'd say its definitely worth it. Almost a Pienaar --> Fellaini type of trade.

One of the things I've noticed from reading on here is that many posters tend to use the 'value' argument as if a players returns so far count as 'value' going forward. It's one of the easiest traps to fall into in my opinion. We're only 10 GW's in but I saw people doing it after GW3, GW5 etc.

I think when you consider the potential value of a player you also need to account for circumstances and their form historically. You could argue RVP is terrible value and he probably is compared to other players so far. However, it's very easy to say something like this retrospectively...'everyone should have bought Suarez/Holt/Crouch because they represent better value'. Yes, they do represent better value in hindsight. But look who we're dealing with here. Look at the clubs they play for...the unreliability...the lack of predictability...the randomness!

When all is said and done...there are positions in our team that might be filled with valuable gems but ignoring a guy who scored 30 goals last year because he doesn't represent perfect value could be dangerous. Yes you are paying way too much...but is there anybody as predictably guaranteed to score points than RVP in the last year? No in my opinion.

I might look for value when I'm browsing a supermarket...but I'm not too bothered in FPL if the name beside the price tag is RVP! 😀

It's about a balance. You need to look for value in your team because you can't afford to get just the top scoring players. But filling a team with just the best value would give you a team of 6m overachievers who still don't achieve as much as their elite counterparts.

You find enough value players so that you can afford the maximum-points-at-any-cost elite. For a while, I thought that RVP wasn't going to be in that category this year for the well worn reasons X,Y & Z. But he so is.

You get the guys who will get the most points, regardless of price, then fill the rest with 'value' players imo. If the whole squad was full of good value players you'd have 20m spare.

I agree, no matter what anybody says...you rarely see a team with loads of money to spare doing well (like the ridiculous amount you suggested). People just don't play the game like that for the most part. Having the best 'value for money' squad thus far would be incredibly lucky.

It's not all about the best value 15 players though is it. And it's not the individual player value. It's what for the difference in price of RVP and another striker could do for your whole team.

For the most part, I'd say something like Ba, Bale & Mata would outscore RVP & two midfielders for £15m or whatever. Plus you have three captain options instead of one.

You can afford a lot more elsewhere when you don't have RVP, obviously, is my point.

It's just different styles of play. Neither is right, neither is wrong. Having RVP is 'safer' as loads have him and will captain him each week, but not having him is perfectly reasonable. Something some people don't seem to get "gotta have RVP!!!" yada yada.

You could have a combination of Baines, Mata and Ba for the same price that you'd pay for Cuellar, RVP, and Nolan.

Just to put it in real terms. It's not like your going to put the money away for a rainy day.

I do get why RVP is the safe investment though, but going forward I think it's safe to suggest other players will offer value going forward.

(And as such, an alternative argument to RVP)

RVP will be the highest points scorer this year (most likely), so he ain't exactly a risk. But hence the price.

It's important to realize for his cost, what you should expect back, like any other player 🙂

Anyways got to go, but you get the jist of my argument. Can't speak for every non RVP owner, some probably post nonsense like some pro RVP owners (not suggesting you)

And I'm thinking of buying Cuellar 😀

At the end of the day I think it comes to down to your preferred strategy. Suarez never came into my thoughts at his price and the frustration I had previously owning him last year. I probably will lose out on a healthy supply of Suarez points...but you just have to make your decisions and hope they pay off.

It's still all about value. You make an important point too and that is that players who score more actual points can be worse value for money and still better options. That is because filling your team up with the 15 best value for money players would not give you the most points.

The bottom line is still that we buy RVP for 13.5m because we think he'll score shitloads of points, but we wouldn't if he cost 18.5m because then he wouldn't be good enough value.

Exactly...he's JUST affordable enough to justify owning...hence it makes some sense. 18.5m and we'd all be laughing our heads off at people buying him.

I think he has tipped the point of cost to being too much, but it is arguable cause of the captaincy issue (he has upside, but the maths suggest he will regress, one could argue he will stay the same).

As long as people bear that in mind, we're all cool. But some perspective should be taken, too easy to say buy RVP, Mata, Bale, Baines and a few cheapos, you will be top 1000 in no time son. One place behind me 😀

it's not *that* bad. Ivanovic out, perhaps. Huddlestone out for sure, and Benteke, but other than that it's fine. Even then, Ivan is the top defender so far and Benteke has attacking points in his last 2 (yay Benteke)

I can see the argument for Ivanovic to Rafael (although I still think Ivanovic is always good for a goal) but AVB is indicating the Hudd is nailing down a place in the Spurs starting line-up and, looking back through his stats and, as a Derby fan, remembering the hammer shot he has on him, he is dirt cheap. And Benteke, with AV's improving fixtures, seems to be their main man. Never been that convinced by Berbatov.

        No offence taken!

Villa's fixtures are poor IIRC, but I do like a punt.
T-Hudd has no chance of nailing down a spot unless Dembele/Sandro are out long term, and then there is Parker who must be back eventually?

Rafael is going to be one of the star full backs this season (like BAE was last time) so dropping Ivan for him isn't a sacrifice at all imo (also with the fixtures he's going to pick up at least 2 clean sheets in the next 5 imo).

Pretty sure Hud won't get in ahead of Dembele and Sandro when they're fit? Not sure on this though.

Benteke simply will never be as good as Berba. He might be a more viable FPL prospect which is a fair point but you wouldn't want him with the fixtures he has to face.

It seems your net team value is low which is why I really think Ivan needs to go. P.S Riise for Hughes could free up cash for you too!

    A) Shawcross (just 0.2 in the bank to upgrade Clyne) who gives an ok goal and bp threat
    B) Wilkinson (0.8 in the bank to upgrade Clyne)

Bale -> Walcott (-4) - madness? Will then do one of Walcott/Santi (or even Fellaini if he happens to pick up that 5th yellow card in GW12) -> Bale in GW13 after Bale's uber tough 2 fixtures and I've had a couple of weeks to assess the better option of the 2 Arsenal mids....

    Hey everyone

Bench Bale, Michu, Pienaar, Jelavic or Berba? Leaning towards Pienaar

Also, McCarthy or Jaas? Assuming the former plays. Gonna play Gorkss over McCartney I think, so unsure whether to double up on Reading's better fixture.

    Thanks in advance

Only seen Nelsen play 1-2 times, gets up for corners but not sure how much of a threat he is. Plus he's a Kiwi so...any other options?

I'm trying to decide who to take out... They're both bench fodders and I'm leaning towards taking Nelsen out but the one wk I'd need to play either one of the two is. QPR vs SOT game in which case it makes sense to keep Nelsen.. 😕

They are both poor, but QPR have at least shown some signs of solidity + they have a much better squad than Southampton, who have 0 CS potential.

Yeah I'm a huge fan too. I'd be getting Bale back in 2 weeks no question, so it's a short term punt on Walcott (FUL, TOT) outscoring Bale (mcy, ars) by more than 4 points, and also getting the option of losing either Santi or Walcott for Bale after seeing them both play together for a couple of weeks.

Is Dembele back this w/e? He's massive for Spurs imo.

If I don't find a way to get a Newcastle attacker I'll be swapping Hangeland for Sagna. Their fixtures rotated nicely but it hasn't paid off most weeks. Looking to change that soon.

I would lose Crouch for Ba but I have no way to fund it without losing Mata/Santi/Bale or an 8 point hit which seems daft.

Probably just get Sagna and then pray Ba doesn't go mental.

I think Chris Glover did a great analysis on his blog at one point which found the following (paraphrased):

You should always go for the cheaper option where possible unless the difference in marginal or the defenders attacking threat is exceptional (i.e. Baines, maybe Verm and potentially Vertongen/Huth).

    Brian, if you're still about...

You make some valid points regarding RVP and it has been discussed a lot not only over the last couple of pages, but also the last few weeks. I have a few things that I would like to add:

I'm a huge fan of using stats to project future performance and in addition to following a few blogs on the topic, I'm constantly tweaking my own personal projections model in order to get a better idea about who are the best players to own.

However, stats only tell you so much. They can give you an insight into past pest performance and can be used to forecast future performance but they're not the only factor to consider. RVP is at a new club and no matter how good he is, he still has to adapt to his new team-mates. If you also factor in the relative difficulty of his last six fixtures compared to his up and coming ones, you have to say that he has the opportunity to improve his shots on target rate and his key passes in order to avoid regression.

Also, you have to stop worrying about value at some point and pick one or more high scoring players that you can rely on to captain in most games. The fact you can afford a team like mine with RVP (granted, I WCed in GW4 but that was in order to incorporate him) shows it's do-able.

I suppose there will be a cut-off point where those who don't have him shouldn't sacrifice a load of decent players and hits just to get him in. The constant "get RVP" comments are clearly not helpful but then you have to consider that not everyone posting on these forums is familiar with statistical analysis to project future performance, let alone the concept of regression.

My issue with comparing RVP's value to Suarez's value (for example) is that you could then compare Suarez to Ba and then compare Ba to Crouch. You could endlessly argue there are cheaper alternatives in terms of 'value'.

And the other thing is that regression is often brought up when it comes to strikers on hot streaks. But in my opinion, Suarez isn't the same type of striker as RVP or Ba...and then by extension...Crouch is nothing like these guys either. RVP and Ba for me are the most 'similar' in my eyes as scoring goals is second nature to them. I'm not convinced by Suarez and Crouch because they seem to never peak enough to warrant talk of 'regression'.

This is where stats will help you...as you look at RVP and Ba's previous scoring records...but you could also gather this knowledge by simply watching football. Hence why people scream GET RVP so much 😀

If you have the money, generated through a good WC or something, RVP is a pretty straightforward option imo.

The cheaper players in your team are generating very good value and make up for any loss RVP does. But that could change and I do think it's a valid argument that the money could be spent on players like Mata/Rafa in your case, who look set to generate good numbers over the next while consistently. Other players are pretty consistent on average if you captain them every week as well, for example Ba (who may be over producing as well and lacks the upside of RVP admittedly) and use the extra money.

Personally, I think some cheaper players may struggle to maintain there current productions (they always do) and will regress, while some more expensive options will come to the fore, e.g. Aguero which could change the dynamics.

So I do think RVP is a safe bet now, but some regression is a real threat and he ain't the only option 🙂
