The ScoutCast – Episode Eighty Seven – The Hole

We just won’t let it lie. Having rinsed through the idea in this week’s Digest, the prospect of dropping this new breed of “in the hole” midfielders into a new Fantasy position gets another airing in this week’s ‘Cast. Granville agrees but we still somehow manage to argue about it.

Around that particular hot topic, there’s our usual brand of regulars, plus a preview of the two sides that lie in wait for us in the Fantasy Football Scout Cup and the latest on Ed’s team and his work on the new comments system. “Mr Ghostship” had a bad week – could it be all the attention has piled the pressure on his big coding shoulders?

Take up the role in the hole by clicking this link, or just stream the business in your browser via the player below….

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He is quality but his manager is not and because of this he will suffer. Granville talking about a 4:3 this week in that game, can't see it myself. Spurs will take a hiding

His struggle in home games is a worry for a player of his price though. Although i suspect in his last game he was restricted by Wigan's formation, due to the wing backs pushing back Bale and Lennon. He did however, deliver an obscene amount of crosses in that match. I'm keeping.

Yeah if I had I would keep. The question was to pick 2 from Mata,Bale and Cazorla. For me Bale would have to miss out from that 3

Cazorla has a few nice fixtures but I would rather have Bale tbh. It's pretty random when Bale scores well and when he doesn't but overall he will score big more often.

Caz will score big over the next few months aswell. Considering this is his first season he has looked awesome. How many other top players were terrible in their first season?

Agreed. And Fellaini is not a natural goalscorer, as his stats suggest, and their price rises account for their new classification; rewarding the scouts who find them first with a cheaper tag and giving the deserved, more expensive price to the late comers.

Don't think you were on when there was a 3 page debate on this the other day.

My 2 cents are that I wouldn't reclassify the attacking mids but the defensive ones.

Anybody expected to play a role which involves almost no attacking play (Sandro, Lucas, Mikel, Barry, Carrick etc.) should be a defender.

If you do the maths on it they still wouldn't be worth it and it creates a new category which I'm not keen on. Price them around the price of the top priced defender for their team and they are a good pick.

I would say 4 points. They are just as instrumental in not conceding. And, actually, less likely to score attacking points than full backs these days.

Adjusting the BP algorithm such that it rewards DM play would most easily account for this/make DMs worthwhile again.

People disliked the old BP system, but Essien was a BP magnet back then.

I disliked the old BP system because it was subjective, sometimes random and baffling.

Tweaking the objective system towards defensive play and unrewarded attacking play (whilst not totally discounting rewarded attacking play) is a good idea.

How is that unfair? Unfair is a points/BP system that ignoresx an entire classification of player, thus rendering them moot in the game.

Diminish scoring/assisting BP value (they are their own reward) and increase the blocks/passes/recovered balls value.

BPs are awarded for exceptional play. All platers should have the chance to score equal points. Maybe I've misunderstood (a bit tipsy) but suggesting def mids can make up the difference by gaining bps doesn't make sense.

You don't want a system that makes up the difference entirely though: there should be good and bad choices. I understand that it might be good to have a broader range of players that are worth picking but at the same time I wouldn't want to play a game where the likes of Lee Cattermole is someone I have to consider!

I also think the idea that there is more of a template team this year than there have been in others is debatable. Plenty of options in all positions if you ask me.

There are plenty of options this year and I would like ALL players of equal position to be given an equal chance, including Lee 😉

In the end, we all know Scott Parker or Lucas or whoever should be valued in this game, but they are not. Something is wrong.

Why should they though? I don't see why we need equal opportunities for fantasy points, it's always been the case that 75% of players don't even get considered for your team anyway.

Nah... every player has the opportunity of the honour of being in my team (ahem). Unfortunately some excellent players will never be there because the points scoring system makes them unplayable. I feel that is wrong. You can disagree. We're getting nowhere.

I wouldn't classify them as defenders as then actual defenders would get ignored. Maybe they could get an extra point of two for a CS.

The idea to have a new category 'AM' is something i can't get onboard with. I just can't see the benefits of it. As for not being able to have differentials, really, you can only afford 2 of Nolan, Fellaini or Michu so there are still 2 slots where you can pick differentials.

It's a great debate and I really don't think it's ridiculous to say that Nolan, Michu etc play a different position to Carrick and Barry. There are so many mids redundant in Fantasy Football, I just think the game brave enough to seek to change that could do okay by it.

I personally think that the beauty of FPL is how lovely simple it is (in most aspects). I think recoverd balls COULD work but I'm not overly enamored with the idea of clogging the game up with points for random things like that.

I don't think recovered balls excite players as much as attacking players earning assists and goals. There is a reason this style of game is so popular i think. Recovered balls is so wooly to predict.

This is a good point... I like the idea of rewarding these things through the bonus points, via a tweaked PPI system, but points given directly for it would make it pretty tiresome. It's boring enough seeing people shouting about whether a keeper's got his 3rd save or not yet!

There are far too many input parameters for the PPI to use it in a way that could pick out DM stats in a meaningful way.

But instead of introducing recovered balls they could give a stronger weighting to the DM stats in the BP formula, including recovered balls.

Interesting. I don't know how PPI works, perhaps just use OPTA stats instead. Basically just bonus points that reflect things that aren't already rewarded by normal points: tackles, recovered balls, clearances etc. And even attacking stats too like successful crosses and so on.

Rewarding the work that players do that isn't already rewarded by the traditional scoring system. That's what bonii should be for in my opinion.

I think the Guardian used to have a special category for defensive midfielders when that game ran. Have a vague memory of Gareth Barry absolutely murdering the competition in his Villa days.

Indeed, but what about now we've all got them? There's 28 weeks to go. What about the fact that you might be 50-100 points behind someone with a midfield of Bale/Cazorla, Mata, Michu, Nolan and Fellaini. How do you use your midfield to catch them without taking what is perceived to a risk on someone like Silva or Valencia?

You can argue that there are opportunities elsewhere in our squads, when you throw in Baines and a couple of obvious cheapies at the back, make RVP captain, the opportunity to find differentials gets more and more limited.

The midfield has five slots - this should be the area of the team where differentials are found and come good. My point is, right now, you'd be taken a hell of risk gambling in this area because of the merits of these mid-price players playing up in support of the strikers.

We talk about template teams a lot and I think the main cause of this is the the shrinking number of viable options in midfield. We can't stop RVP being a potential game breaker with his consistency, but we could balance games to widen the options in midfield.

I guess it's different for you becasue you are playing against serious FF players, a lot of whom follow this site so it does make it difficult to make up ground. For me, i don't think there is one team in my mini league (including mine) who has all three of Nolan, Michu and Fellaini. I would argue that there are alternatives to Michu and Fellaini aswell, it wasn't long ago that many were saying Pienaar is still the better option and that could turn out to be true. Hernandez looks like a solid/cheaper alternative to Michu. Template teams only last soo long, for example, someone like Suarez could become 'a must' in a few weeks and you may need to downgrade one of your big hitting midfielders.

I wouldn't class any of them as essential, I shifted Michu two weeks ago and he hasn't hurt me... yet. I only plan to keep Nolan for 2 more weeks aswell.

Yep I really hope that is the case, I just think with a clear change of emphasis towards support striker roles over the last few seasons the Fantasy games should look at it. I personally don't think the cycle of form is frequent or powerful enough sometimes to break up the templates formed and sometimes I'd like to be forced to think more about my midfield choices in particular.

Sure but I just don't remember seasons like the previous two for template mids forming. We looked today at Granvilles cup opponent and they shared 8 players...somehow though that wasn't a big surprise. I just wonder if the games could do more to stop that happening so frequently.

You may be right, but I'll leave you with this final thought: could the reason for the template teams actually be something a little closer to home? Many people who use this site have very similar teams, and sometimes I look at my mini league rivals and think "they must use FFS" whereas with most of my mini league I actually have quite a few differentials. Maybe the huge success of this site has lead to the template teams: if you reckon it's only in the last 2 seasons then the timing would be right, no?

                Mark created the beast...

I agree with Mark on this one. The game is too simple without a new position.

There is an argument that full backs have a too big advantage over centre halves as well.

I've just looked and i've had 13 different midfielders so far this season. Players come in and out of form all the time, template midfields don't last long, plenty of space for differentials.

That's true, of course, but we've had talk of template midfields for two seasons now and we've had a couple of waves of it already this term. Say we get templates forming every six weeks - I still think that's harmful, I still think we need more variation and options that are viable. I'm not convinced that Fellaini, Nolan and Michu aren't season keepers - it might take injuries and bans to break them up.

I don't think there will be set templates every month. I think this season has been a bit different becasue there are a lack of differentials performing:

          Silva - Injured
          Nani - Out of favour
          Dempsey - Moved clubs
          Walcott - Out of favour

The list goes on, any one of these players has the potential to be a huge differential but all have question marks over them at the moment.

It's also down to the lack of striker options at the moment, RVP and 2 midpriced/cheap strikers are allowing for a better midfield. As soon as Aguero bangs in 2 in one game, teams are going to change.

I agree it's Tevez that would have to make way due to the uncertainty on him playing every week. I wouldn't lose Baines though. I would be more inclined to switch Ivanovic out. It is a tough one. Hazard is the other but with him being on pens he has to stay really. Have you got enough money to do Ivanovic to Cameron and Tevez to RVP?

I think i'll go Bale and Michu just because they are "bigger" players. Maloney first sub in case Ba doesn't play.

other option maybe mariappa to either Davis or Gorkss looks good to me, Foster rated at 60-40 for the game if you havnt seen it, so sounds fairly promising

Maybe take a punt on Tremmel at Swansea cheap back up keeper who will play in Vorms absence, nice fixture this week and by next week would imagine Foster will be back anyway

        Expansion.

This may be totally wrong but I always think, when you are a big fish in a small pond, you grow too big and cannot move,

That is what Bale is at Spurs. Needs to move on to blossom.

I really don't like Fulham's fixtures, but Berba will be fantastic value. Sunderland's fixture's are pretty good though, i'd hold onto Fletcher. I know fixture's aren't everything but they do make a difference. And Fletcher isn't really a player 'form' applies to as he's so efficient with his chances.

Saving a FT is always the best default position to have imo. That way you only use a FT when it is absolutely necessary. Things change so much after a single weekend of EPL...

Has anyone else noticed the trend (on here) of people choosing fullbacks for their defenders rather than central defenders. Gone have the days of FPL favourites such as Shawx, Hangeland, Huth, Vidic, Terry, Kompany, Cahill and the rest. And in come the likes of Baines, Cameron, Hughes, Clyne, Rafael, Sagna, Gibbs, etc.

Ok there are exceptions but this seems to be a general shift

Guess it is due to a shift in tactics to attacking full backs...?

It's a simple assessment of attacking potential. Centre backs scoring from set pieces or Rafa/Baines/Ivan tearing it up in open play. Take your choice.

It seems that value this year is in the full backs. Last year it was kompany, Evans, Cahill. This year It's Baines, Rafael and Sagna.

    Bego

    Baines Clyne Gorrks

    Bale Michu Santi Barfa

    Crouch RVP Tevez

    Jussi - McCauley - Kacak - Demel

Prepared to take a -4 .. Which is better from the following?

    A) Bale and Michu -> Fellaini and Mata

    B) McCauley and Michu -> Fellaini and Cameron

    C) Bale -> Mata

    D) Bale -> Mata/ Fellaini

Allright had plans to do Lowton to Williamson but now that Williamson is potentially injured that plan has certainly gone for a toss. I have 0.0 money in the bank so is there anything you would change? Keep in mind that Demel (injured) and Lowton have terrible fixtures. also guthrie is a deadweight.

    Team at the moment-
    Begovic
    Baines, Cameron., Ivanovic
    Hazard, Cazorla, Pienaar, Maloney
    RVP, Suarez, Berba

    Subs- Jaasklainen, Lowton, Demel, Guthrie.

So what should i fix now that I have no money in the bank also.
    Replies greatly appreciated 🙂

If you only have 1 FT then keep it for next week as your team is looking nice.

Demel + Lowton > Cuellar/Baird + Gorkks might be worth doing in the next couple of weeks.
