The ScoutCast – Episode Eighty Seven – The Hole

We just won’t let it lie. Having rinsed through the idea in this week’s Digest, the prospect of dropping this new breed of “in the hole” midfielders into a new Fantasy position gets another airing in this week’s ‘Cast. Granville agrees but we still somehow manage to argue about it.

Around that particular hot topic, there’s our usual brand of regulars, plus a preview of the two sides that lie in wait for us in the Fantasy Football Scout Cup and the latest on Ed’s team and his work on the new comments system. “Mr Ghostship” had a bad week – could it be all the attention has piled the pressure on his big coding shoulders?

Take up the role in the hole by clicking this link, or just stream the business in your browser via the player below….

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not really sure. He generally performs better away and against the 'big' opposition. I say his fixtures look great! 😉

Seems many like myself are trying to fund RVP into their teams. If it isn't Bale it has to be someone similarly priced. And lets face it he hasn't been setting the game alight!

Instead of 3 or 4 transfers that acure minimal cash gains people are trying to fit the trade into two. Trying now to decide if I do it this week or next with hits.

Repost as this got stuck at the bottom of last page.

Allright had plans to do Lowton to Williamson but now that Williamson is potentially injured that plan has certainly gone for a toss. I have 0.0 money in the bank so is there anything you would change? Keep in mind that Demel (injured) and Lowton have terrible fixtures. also guthrie is a deadweight.

    Team at the moment-
    Begovic
    Baines, Cameron., Ivanovic
    Hazard, Cazorla, Pienaar, Maloney
    RVP, Suarez, Berba

    Subs- Jaasklainen, Lowton, Demel, Guthrie.

So what should i fix now that I have no money in the bank also.
    Replies greatly appreciated 🙂

Interesting GW. Big decisions needed for strategy! Only have a £100 team too.

The RVP question.. I don't have and am looking at pro's and cons.

With him you get great points hauls most weeks and a good captain pick to boot! But on the downside I can only afford a budget defence and one big priced Mid, I.E. Caz/ Bale/ Mata/ Haz etc...

Without him I can have other possible big point scorers spread out over different teams. Two big priced Mids and two big priced Forwards too (like Tevez/ Rooney).

RVP... to be or not to be?

Right, so because mark and Granville are mile behind the leaders the whole game needs a shake up so its easier to catch up. Funny, last season when they were flying high with template teams everything was fine.

I don't think it's that, I see the points of both of them to be honest.

It would certainly make the currently redundant yet useful players such as Mikel, N'Zonzi et al become key features of FF teams. I do think more use should be given to these.

At the same time, the more you play with the points system, the more you put people off. I think one of the reasons why this game is so successful, in addition to the obvious fact that it's free, is that the points system is so simplistic. I've played games years ago where you get points for this, that and the other (e.g. number of tackles put in, number of passes made etc.) that it gets so difficult to understand and you just end up losing interest.

I'm not saying it has to be changed to that extent, but if you're having this dichotomy between midfielders and attacking midfielders, then surely you'll have to alter the points system slightly.

The whole point of the game is to get as many talented game winning players into your squad as possible, and at the right time.
That will never include muck players like Mikel who is purely a destroyer and never even tries to pass the ball fwd.
Changing the game to include them is a bad bad idea. Better idea that top teams like Chelsea don't employ rubbish like Mikel but look for a talented alternative in the mould of Xavi Alonso etc.

Harsh on Mikel, he's a good player. Will make us think harder about those types of players who aren't necessarily goalscorers and assisters. I see how well N'Zonzi is playing for Stoke every week but I know I'd never get him into my side because of the position he plays. I'd be more inclined to do so if there was DM and AM slots.

It's not all about big name game-winning players either. Kasper Gorkks?

You can't honestly be saying you want n'zonzi to score the same for passing side ways and fouling as mata who links play, creates assists and scores?

This is the beautiful game, not rugby.

There wouldn't be points for passing sideways and fouling though would there? I don't know how they'd do it, that's what makes it so difficult.

However, your point still stands for current players. Nolan vs. Mata, Maloney vs. Mata, etc. They're hardly world beaters are they? If anything, I'd say N'Zonzi was a better all-around midfielder than them both.

Gorkss is a hardy pro with a great attitude and a half decent record for scoring goals.
He is a great cheap alternative and good 3rd sub material 'after' you have picked all the talented guys
Most who played him the wknd did so cos they had no better options that wk.
Anyone who picked him cos theyve been watching reading and though he was due a goal I salute them and they got what they deserved but that was a tiny handful of people.
As for Mikel, I hate him and player like him. Hes a destroyer with zero creativity.
Fair enough he has tactical discipline and can tackle but he should be so much better at passing and breaking fwd than he is. He's a professional footballer after all, passing the ball fwd, a bit of vision, ambition etc shouldnt be too much to ask.
Mascherano is the same, basically a waste of space when youre in possession.....

I don't think I was much better off this time last year tbh...but it does make it more stark because you look above you and see identikit teams...obviously when you're flying you spend less time looking at teams below you so yes, I certainly agree that I'm more aware of it right now. My own rank isn't my motivation though, I'm just wondering if this template midfield thing that keeps cropping up every six weeks is something that can be avoided by better balancing of the games in future seasons. Even if I was top of the world I'd want the games we play to be as good as they can be. You might of noticed that I kind of care about it 😉

Thing is, a template team every 6 weeks is pretty hard to predict and makes it challenging enough. I play in leagues of casuals and their teams are miles behind and very random.

If you want the real reason for template teams, and you won't like this is. It's this forum. Information is shared and reviewed and in the end it's filtered down into just a few players making everyone jump in the same players, but for (mainly) the right reasons. A total novice could land here, read a few rmt and start a team that finished in the top 100k, would never have happened a few seasons back.

I used to run an online game and balance is something you always strive for, it's near impossible though, players will always find the weak spots and its AMs this year it'll be DMs next year. In my view the simplicity of fpl is pretty genius, every other fantasy game hasn't matched up so I vote stay as they are, even bps are working pretty well this year.

        Just my 2p.

But the idea of the 'template' or 'cookie cutter' teams only exist in here, and other such forums.
The form players will always be selected by players chasing points, regardless of what anyone does.
Players that take the game seriously and manage their teams every week will always have as many of their players as possible on page 1 of the transfers page - the top scorers. This is especially true after 10 games but different in the second half of the season when players hitting form will be on page 2 and page 3 of the transfer page due to poor starts to the season etc.
I think all this talk is knee jerkish and will disappear after Christmas cos as I remember it, its been the same after 10 games every year in the FPL

second half of the season is so much easier. every year i seem to fly up the rankings after christmas. ain't cos i do better but cos the casual types do worse. guess that could be a reason; peeps buyin players just cos they're near the top on overall points, not actually anticipating an upturn or reacting to renewals in fortune

Ridiculous idea to have a category of 'attacking midfielders'.
Even more to suggest changing players positions mid season.
Classification is based on where they played last year, as are the prices. Thats it, leave it alone.
If Fellaini ends up playing in an advanced role then so what, just put him in your team and get on with it.

This FPL game has people obsessed with players positions etc. Its football, mids have been pushing forward since the year dot.
The only thing making Fellaini stand out this season is his price and it was only 6.5 because he plays for unfashionable Everton. Same with Michu and Nolan. If these guys played for Utd or Chelsea theyd be 8-9m from the start.
Its the pricing thats the problem, not the classification of position.
Another thing is that midfielders get a clean sheet point and defenders dont. Why not? I saw Ba make 5-6 clearances and the same no of tackles in 50 mins last week. Rooney does the same.
Get the pricing right and give fwds clean sheet points too...

I never even hinted that enticing debate was ridiculous. If I thought that I wouldnt have joined teh debate with my ideas.
What I said was the 'idea' to change players positions mid season is ridiculous.
        Tell me why its not.
example - Fellaini is classed as a fewd tomorrow, immediately I have 4 mids and 4 forwards in my team but someone without Fellaini has the usual 5 and 3. HOW is this idea not ridiculous.

As for pigeonholing players, you wanna call Rooney a midfielder now cos he plays a little further from th egoal?
And fellaini a fwd cos he plays a little closer to the goal.
Was Rooney a left winger 2 yrs ago?
Is Baines a left winger now?
The point of the game is to watch the developments of teams and their tactics 'yourself' and try to exploit by 'yourself' where the value is, not to have the FPL tell everyone "Oh wait, Rooney is a left winger now, were gonna drop his price by 3m and reclassify him for everybody"
        Give me a break!

    I'd like this to happen:

Mata, Bale, Cazorla et al to dip in form; Silva, Valencia, Walcott, Dempsey to find form, requiring a mass shake up to everyone's strategies and teams, including those pesky top 50,000 who seem to've made all the right decisions and had all the luck so far. A full scale shift in who the big hitters in form are would be lovely, and would give loads of us a chance to close gaps and break away from templates already imposed by ML leaders

He's one yellow card from suspension and has a number of tough fixtures coming up following that (assuming he gets it in the next 3 GW's, which he should)

but Utd are a team with far better attacking outlets which promises more frequent points for Valencia, be it goals or assists. Cazorla 's points may only come from individual efforts, and therefore less chance of matching Valencia's haul over next few.

I haven't listened to the scoutcast yet but noticed there's a big debate going on about template midfields and the narrowness of choice. Was this not even more the case back when you had the holy trinity of Gerrard/Lampard/Ronaldo? There isn't any figure just this minute who has the same sort of aura about them as these 3. I didn't play FPL back in those days so I don't know from experience what that was like. I was thinking it sounded much simpler back then and this season despite there being template mids forming...there is still a decent amount of variety and alternative sources for attacking points. Not to mention excellent value in cheaper players in midfield. Maybe I've missed the point of the debate and need to listen to the podcast though.

Nah you haven't missed the point. Back in the real template days like you say when you just captained Ronaldo and flanked with gerrard and lamps the game wasn't as big as it is now with the resources available so the other picks relied on skill and knowledge. Now everyone comes here making the amount of effort you put in almost worthless as any novice can pick up the too 20 players and pick 11.

It annoys the hardcore gamers when casuals can do well. Problem is, when you run the game, this kind of balance us exactly what you aim for, but the hardcore minority all also the people who shout and care the most and will demand you change it so they can have an edge again. It's a brave person who says no and leaves the silent casuals enjoy the game at the expense of a few hardcore gamers moving on to something new.

You havent missed anything, in fact you've hit the nail on the head.
A few things were suggested in the scoutcast, nothing wrong with that.
But because some people think the ideas are ridiculous and unneeded they get a bit hammered by the cronies and hard gamers who it seems will never accept that its a game and no matter how hard you try, so much of it is based on luck.

But you rarely get a conclusive debate anyway cos the nature of it here is that people just move on to the next unrelated topic, then the nxt one etc etc often never replying to their original questions or ever replying to peoples answers so, as good a tool as it is to indulge yourself for knowledge its not a great place for debate most of the time.

    Is reducing my defence to:

    Baines, Cuellar, McCartney, Wilson, Gorkss

Worth it to get RVP in, I'm doing Cole to Gorkss, and ignoring my problems with Wilson til next week.
I'm considering a 4 point hit for Wilson to Wilkinson.

Will Wilkinson outscore McCartney (new) or Cuellar (eve)?

Charlie. I'm one of those getting rid of Bale. I wouldn't normally do it, but its the best way I can see of getting RVP in. He has mci, ars, ful, eve, in the next 6 games. They are some TOUGH fixtures. I know he has scored well in his last 3 away games. But two of them have been against reading and southampton, so we only really have the man utd to go on. Also, Dembele is still probably out for another 1-2 games which seems to affect spurs performance. I will probably get Bale back in an upgrade for pieanaar or barfa around GW17.

I'm about to do Bale + Defoe > Maloney > RVP. Should i do it now to avoid the price rise. Or wait until tomorrow?

If you have him, RVP is the man to Captain, regardless of fixture at the moment.

How likely is Ba to play this coming GW?

Have enough in bank to do Fletcher to Ba. Think Ba is essential with Toon fixtures coming up.
