Watchlist

The Watchlist – Shaun Maloney

As the stars of the Fantasy football firmament revolve over the course of the season, we frequently find ourselves tightening our belts in one area so that we may lay on the fatted calf in another. The grave is ever beside the throne for premium picks and, as the fortunes of the rival pretenders wax and wane, an underclass of budget kingmakers is ever at hand to furnish us with the means of acquiring the most seasonable allegiances.

Those currently destitute of a certain Dutchman might be particularly anxious to lose a few pounds in their midfield midriff and, whilst Raheem Sterling represents the most fashionable celebrity diet , Wigan’s Shaun Maloney is uniquely placed to offer both an alternative and an adjunct to the lithe Liverpool wing man.

Tucked in just behind Arouna Kone in Wigan’s 3-4-2-1 system, the Scot has produced attacking returns in five of his 10 games so far – registering a goal and four assists for a total of 35 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points. Sterling, by comparison, has registered a goal and two assists for a grand total of 33. With penalties in Maloney’s locker, plus a share of free kicks and corners, it may come as a surprise that he is currently the cheaper of the two: tipping the scales at 5.0 in FPL (although 6.9 and a striker in the Sky Sports game) compared to Sterling’s 5.2 and 4.3 respectively.

Playing for an unglamorous side and sporting an unglamorous haircut seldom yield column inches, and the gulf in ownership is a stark testament to Maloney’s comparative invisibility. Owned by just 1.6% of players compared with Sterling’s 15.6%, the Scot represents an out-and-out differential opportunity, and seems likely to remain usefully ensconced under the mainstream radar.

Last week’s assured win at White Hart Lane demonstrates the Latics’ capacity to go pound for pound with the big boys, and with home ties against West Brom and Reading in the next three, the immediate future looks bright for their attacking assets. In the medium term, the Wigan fixture list is more of a mixed bag, but a Maloney/Sterling rotation equates to (WBA, WIG, RDG, MCI, SOT, QPR, AVL, FUL) up to Gameweek 18 – the cusp of the winter wildcard season.

Offering perhaps the most potent union of open play and set piece threat in the budget bracket, yet boasting low ownership and strong fixture rotational potential – Shaun Maloney could be the key that unlocks many a transfer dilemma over the coming weeks.

I have a defence of baines, santon, and shawcross…

1FT and i can afford the upgrade.

For Santon if you can, Newcastle have 1 clean sheet all season and Collocini out for 3 matches is a massive blow.

They've scored 67 points together in the last 5 GWs in poor fixtures and they've just qualified from their CL group, so rotation is reduced.

        Paradise.

Looking at the fixtures its Bale, on current form its also Bale.
But I had the same decision last week and I took out Caz, something about Bales proven FPL record made me keep him..

He's just a far greater goal threat than Caz. Caz takes loads of shots from 20+ yards and that makes him look statistically like a greater danger than he really is. Not even delivering the assists. Brilliant real world player but etc...

The reason why this is a fool's paradise in mine eyes is this...

You lose a key playmaker mid for a highly expensive forward alongside another highly expensive forward you already own.

You have to hope for Man Utd to score 2 or more goals every match for it to pay off. Or else be extremely lucky and get 1-0 (Rooney goal. RVP assist or vice versa) And at the end of the day...who do you then captain? And if you get it wrong...you look like a fool. It's the most ridiculous idea since Adam and Eve.

But do you really want him for the DGW? In the last 4 games he has had 3 shots on target. Doesn't matter how many opponents he faces in a week, if he doesn't shoot he won't score.

With the injury news today about the West Brom and Reading GK situations, which of my keepers do you think will start this week?

      A) Foster
      B) Federici

      Thanks 😀

Rooney plays so deep (esp away) your paying almost 12m for a CAM. You don't need both.

Get Valencia if you want too attacking reds. He's 3m+ cheaper and likely to score just as well. Put it another way, you'll be paying the extra 3m for the possibility of penalties.

Plus the whole cpt dilemma on both players will bite you.

Podolski has just not been involved enough on the wing, he misses playing with Gibbs. A real shame as he started the season really well and has been clinical when he has had chances. Walcott is not the saviour people seem to think he will be up front

Changing my defence over coming 2/3 GWs; which of the following altered line-up do you think's stronger?
      A) Baines Demel Cuellar Rafael Gorks (3 transfers needed)
      B) Rafa Santon Cuellar McAuley Mertesacker (2 transfers needed)

A gives me Baines for this GW but is much weaker in the 3rd/4th defender slot, whilst B is stronger overall and gives great rotation for the foreseeable, but no Leighton...

People talkin bout gettin rid of Bale concerns me. Last season I held onto him in Feb/March when his form sank and fear doing the same again.

His stats are strong, and other than his home form being suspect, surely he's a keeper?

Last year he scored a blinder at Citeh. He's a guy for the big games. I'm holding for now.
