The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Sunday

Brede Hangeland’s dismissal hands Sunderland the chance to register their first away win of the season. Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson both play a part in two of the Black Cats’ three goals, while Dimitar Berbatov draws a rare blank as Fulham lose for the first time with the Bulgarian in their starting XI:

On the Up

Steven Fletcher
Without a strike since Gameweek 5, the Scot returned to form with a goal and assist as Sunderland made full use of their extra-man advantage following Brede Hangeland’s first-half dismissal. With four home fixtures in the next four, including double Gameweek 16, Fletcher chose the perfect time to serve a reminder of his capabilities.

Adam Johnson
The winger added to last week’s goal at Everton by providing a pair of assists as the Black Cats scored more than a single goal for only the second time this season. Johnson had previously failed to produce any attacking returns prior to Gameweek 11 but is starting to suggest he may be finally settling at the Stadium of Light.

Carlos Cuellar
Providing he’s injury-free, the Spaniard seems nailed-on at the heart of the Sunderland defence and found the net for the first time since moving to Wearside. His cut-price valuation means Cuellar is another likely candidate for his side’s upcoming fixtures, bearing in mind O’Neill’s side have conceded just three goals in four home games so far.

Stephane Sessegnon
For many a month he’s flattered to deceive but the Benin international fired home a superb effort to score for the first time since March. If Sessegnon can return to the form that produced seven goals and 12 assists last term, he could be another differential to consider over the next few.

Going Down

Brede Hangeland
Dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Lee Cattermole, the Cottagers centre-half now faces a three-match ban. Hangeland’s absence should afford Philippe Senderos a chance alongside Aaron Hughes ahead of trips to Stoke and Chelsea and a home clash against Spurs.

James McClean
A nailed-on starter under Martin O’Neill last term, the winger was omitted from the starting line-up for today’s showdown. The return of Lee Cattermole saw Seb Larsson move to the right and Adam Johnson shift over to the left as McClean dropped out for the second time in three Gameweeks.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian was snapped up by over 230,000 FPL managers heading into today’s game after producing returns in five of his first six starts for the Cottagers. With injuries and dismissals disrupting the hosts’ rhythm, Berbatov returned a rare blank but was nevertheless full of creativity and attacking threat for Jol’s side.

Fulham Defence
There’s no denying Hangeland’s sending off played a part in today’s result but Jol’s defence continue to leak goals at an alarming rate. Fulham have now conceded three goals in all but one of their last four matches and have shipped 22 this term – only QPR and Southampton have conceded more.

** Just a heads-up to let you know that the Big Numbers article, which usually follows Sunday evening’s Stock Check, should now be published tomorrow. Mark has been laid low by a bug and is having a rare night off.

Last week transfer actually is a plan to free up some money and getting 3rd expensive midfield. Hopefully Berba will produce something in coming weeks. I don't put high hope for Berba to start deliver this week.

Repost, bottom of last page. Might as well as it's so dead in here.

Baines must be sold for the sake of having a balanced team in my opinion. He is too expensive to have if it means you miss out on strikers like Tevez/Aguero/Suarez etc. I’m going to sell and have Rafael plus 5-5.5m defender and 3 cheap rotating defenders.

    e.g

Rafael + Ridgewell/Clichy and Gorkss Garrido Cuellar

I’m not sticking it out with Baines if it costs me ever owning any City players. It’s bloody essential. And Baines is not.

You don't get far keeping your principles in this game. Of course I was keen on keeping him last week...because we all hope he gets a 20 pointer while he's in our team. But strategically, it doesn't make sense if he's denying you access to City's goalfests and the like.

No brainer for me to keep for Norwich, I'll get Ba in this week for berbatov. Then reassess next week. If I decide to lose Baines I'll upgrade Ba to Suarez or Tevez.

Baines is overrated imo and that is way too much money that can be used elsewhere. It's proving hard to get any defender returns this season, so may as well go cheap and put the money into attack.

I've said it once before and it bears repeating now. Baines is made into a righteous institution on this site. Yes the stats are amazing. But does he need to be in every single scoutpicks? While Baines has had a good season...Everton are on one of the worst defensive runs ever. They can't buy a CS.

I actually love the look of a team without Baines going forward. It's not essential to have Everton defensive coverage and it's not going to be vindicated when Baines scores a peno in GW38

I'd keep Baines this week- Everton might actually keep a clean sheet. Also, Enrique isn't very good. I'd do a fair bit of research into Pool's potential formation etc before I bought him if I were you.

The other thing I was going to say is...

People talk about Baines as if he's like a 7m midfielder. But they forget that he can also be an underperforming 7m midfielder. And you would sell any 7m mid who was doing as badly as Baines is for the last 7 weeks.

He's a poor 7m midfielder who has to defend and barely ever gets you that bonus 4 points because his team are rubbish at the back.

7mil for a mid on pens, corners, free kicks, who also gets rewarded for cs, and has baps potential is cheap as chips. To assume Everton will spend the rest of the season conceding is dodgy, Moyes is a shrewd guy. Gibson and Distin return very soon, also my play Fellani deeper. The more that sell the happier I am.

I agree there are some great advantages. But not actually having Baines might work to give you that extra bang for your buck up front or in midfield. It's all about preference really. The strategies spouted on here all have Baines involved. I actually like the idea of going against that trend and daring to explore other avenues. It means you can own players that others might not have had the opportunity to.

    Begovic (mannone)
    rafael baines cueller (davies demel)
    michu cazorla sterling nasri (fellaini)
    rvp berba Ba

Have 1FT and 0.7m in the bank....Not sure what to do.
A: ba >> giroud...and then sell cazorla the following week
    B:. ba + cazorla >> giroud + silva.... for a hit
    C: ba + nasri >> suarez + any mid upto 6.8 i.e. morrison...for a hit
    D: ba + nasri >> tevez + any mid upto 7.5 i.e. lennon/johnson...for a hit

I want to bring in suarez and tevez but taking out Ba doesnt make sense since they playing southampton. suarez is on 4 yellows and tevez is playing chelsea.

If i had the cash, i would have just done nasri >> silva but in order to do that now, i have to take a hit...

Fantasy football and these forums are mad tbh. We operate on 1 week attention spans tbh. While any manager or fan worth their salt thinks over months and years, players become essential or must sell in the space of a week. Flavour of the week, bandwagons, received wisdom. We veer from certainty to certainty every week. Perhaps there is this mental state in between called... doubt?

This reminds me of that film...I believe it was called 'Doubt'

It's all part of the fun of it and we all want to be hands on managers making genius moves sometimes.

My favourite thing about FPL is that it makes weekends of football a million times more exciting than they are. And I get excited by football anyway...so that says a lot about the greatness of it. But it also can be a real drag...when it doesn't go so well.
