The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

not really, welbeck back and young/kagawa to slot in the side too.

Might be instances with hernandez on bench even in next few games but he does decent off bench most times so ok move but not great.

Barcelona have rejected a £250m bid from a Russian club for Lionel Messi. Messi was also offered £30m per year in wages. Lionel Messi's release clause is £250m, exactly what the Russian club reportedly offered however Barcelona have rejected the offer [Mundo].

To follow on from the toon debate on the previous page, I was probably getting ahead of myself a little bit. We have had a lot more problems this season than just a frail defence. But I do think that a lot of the problems we have had further forward, stem from the nervousness at the back. It would have cost us 10-12m to buy our main summer targets debuchy and douglas. If we had them playing yesterday (or anybody!!) then we would have won the game yesterday, and many more this season. The transfers would have more than paid for themselves in terms of extra attendance, coporate and prize money. Let's hope that Ashley realizes his mistakes and gets his finger out this window!

He is a cracking player. Scored and assisted plenty in his last full season in France. He is our only creative player (Barfa, Cabeye and vuckic all injured). I refrained from trying to restart the bandwagon last week (a good thing too as he didn't start against QPR), as I fear pardiola doesn't fancy him. But he surely has to get a run in the team now. Right? 4.2m. Nice fixtures after arsenal. NB There is talk that he might be include in the deal to get Remy from marseille. So watch out for that!

think you deserved to win today, never mind draw. or at least it would not have been undeserved to get a win. not a lot of strength in depth seems to be the problem, though even today, were not far off.

You punched above your weight last season, your team is too thin and you have many players which have served you well but will not bring you to the next level, realistically you have good players and one or two great players but it isn't enough. A lot more needs to be done, not just in terms of players but a strength throughout the club.

I don't agree. Our first 11 is good enough to challenge for the top 4. Krul, colo, santon, saylor, tiote, Cabeye, Barfa, ba, cisse (and maybe Anita) are all good enough to compete for a starting spot at any of the teams challenging for 4th spot. Many would get in the current man utd team. Our problem was and is a lack of strength in depth. Mike Williamson playing most games as saylor is injured is shocking!!

Thanks guys. My other option is Rooney -> Hernandez and not bother with a hit, or take the hit still and do Robson-Kanu to Mata or Cazorla on top of that. Thoughts?

I see...not interested in Mata at all? Some Arsenal coverage would be good, Cazorla's certainly more 100% nailed on too. Obviously Walcott has the positional advantage though playing striker...I'm not sure how long that will continue however. If he remains there he'd be a huge differential. But it's just the rotation/contract/injuries proneness that I can't get past myself. I'm waiting to be convinced.

He's a massive differential though and the kind of player that could shoot you up the ranks. His goals/assists ratio to games is pretty amazing in fairness.

Really liked Nolan a while ago and the fixtures are good but West Ham are pretty rubbish at attacking without Diame/Benayoun and have lost Carroll and Cole now (not that they're great or anything) but I'm a bit hesitant because of how dull and defensive they are lately. Still, one goal and he'll be right back on the radar.

Nah, use your money somewhere else.. Would use your money to change Toure, Sterling and Pienaar to Mata/Walcott Fellaini (next gameweek) and Puncheon.. Then we would have the same midfield, that in my eyes is very good.. My plan is to transfer out Sterling and transfer in Fellaini next gameweek, and maybe Baines to Huth/Shawcross (to get enough money)..

What do you think about my team? Need to improve my defence!

He's fantasy gold as he just shoots all the time and gets a massive share of chances. Newcastle are so pants at defending this year they've relied on him a lot to keep them in games which is great because that's basically their only tactic...get it to Ba.

Funny that he's got 3 assists and they were all from players getting rebounds from his shots...his assist potential is about nil but he shoots so much he creates chances by accident 🙂
