Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Pottered

Tony Pulis will need to reshuffle his defensive options after two of Stoke’s regular back-four fell foul of the referee’s wrath against Liverpool in Boxing Day. Ryan Shawcross and Geoff Cameron will now sit out the Potters’ home clash against Southampton after accruing their fifth cautions of the campaign in Wednesday’s 3-1 win:

The duo are two of four players who are set to serve an automatic one-match ban in Gameweek 20. Villa’s Fabian Delph and Newcastle centre-half Mike Williamson are also sidelined against Wigan and Arsenal respectively.

While those four are unavailable, a quartet of new protagonists appeared on the Suspension Tightrope after receiving their fourth cautions of the campaign in midweek. Yaya Toure, Bradley Johnson, Jean Beausejour and Maynor Figueroa will all need to be on their best behaviour this upcoming weekend, as will 27 other players, including the likes of Robin Van Persie, Michu, Gareth Bale, Jermain Defoe, Adel Taarabt and Kevin Nolan; once Gameweek 20 is out the way, though, the limit is then extended to 10 yellows. So far, a quartet on players lead the race for that dubious honour – Luis Suarez, James Perch, Craig Gardner and Angel Rangel all have seven bookings apiece.

Both Darron Gibson and Carlton Cole are available this weekend, however. The FA have overturned three-match bans handed out to the pair in West Ham’s Gameweek 18 home clash with Everton – good news for those Fantasy managers eyeing up Cole as a possible double Gameweek punt; the 4.9 priced forward has produced two goals, an assist and six bonus points in four games since deputising for the injured Andy Carroll.

Elsewhere, Cheick Tiote returns for Newcastle’s trip to Arsenal after sitting out their 4-3 defeat at Old Trafford, while Marouane Fellaini serves the final fixture of his three-match ban as Everton welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park.

Alreet. I don't have the exact dates in hand. But i would expect HBA back early - mid Jan, Cabeye back late Jan - early feb, tiote leaves early Jan (which may actually be a good thing as he has been rubbish)

Gmail doesn't work on my work computer, so i have to email from my phone, or when I get home (and the kid goes to bed). I'm sure i'll be on with you lots leading up to the WC!!

To anyone looking at marveaux. Be aware that Marveaux played really well against wigan, but was then dropped straight away. He SHOULD get a run in the team, even when barfa gets back, and he will be gold if he does BUT pardiola doesn’t fancy him, and he could be dropped at any moment, so only do the transfer if he would be your 5th midfielder, who allows you to afford the big hitters you want, and who you would only call on in emergencies, and wouldn’t expect many points from.

I don't want to be blamed by people who get him again!!! He COULD be absolute gold. But it is a big risk. But as I said before the season, if you can't take a risk with a dirt cheap 5th mid, when can you??

I actually think taking a risk with a 5th mid is not a good idea...They're only there to get 2 points so you want guaranteed game time...Marveaux does not have that.

But you're only going to waste them at the bench. And when you do need him to cover, you might waste a transfer in uncertainty of your 5th mid.

But the point is that it would be a gamble on him becoming more than a "useless no pointer guy". If the punt comes off, it could be great, if it doesn't all you have lost is the odd 1-2 points here and there.

Not quite. In my humble opinion, Marveaux will get a run in the team. If this happens, then he should score very well. And be set for a massive price rise. I would then include him in my normal rotation based on fixtures.

I would only bring him in, if I needed to downgrade, in order to afford the big hitters that I wanted. Think Ferguson from last year. But with massive points potential.

can't tell you tbh, sorry. not sure how long it'll take pratik to get the fixtures and the code sorted.

since you're in epl your fixtures will typically be based on normal epl fixtures. for this first gw your fixtues will either be the same as gw 20 or gw 19 (because gw 20 fixtures are same as gw 38 but h/a switched and no gw 19 fixtures in second half of the season so we have to balance it out)

    Bego,
    Demel, G. Johnson, Nelson
    Michu, Nolan, Bale, Yaya
    Suarez, RVP(c), Aguero

    (subs: Jussi, Shorey, Cameron, HRK)

Seems to be a fair bit of yellow and red around this week, and a few payers out of form ...

Realistically, being the leader at this stage means that they know what they're doing are are unlikely to fck up too much from here on in. This in turn means that you'd probably have to beat them by smaller margins, regularly. So at the half-way point? I'd say any more than 100 points would be tough.

I think realistically 100 pts. Anything above that involves a lot of luck.

I have gone from 700k (gw15) to 99k (gw19) in 4 gw's. That's unbelievable in it's own way. So you can get really lucky too.

      A few inferences from this

      * Good captaincy alone will not get you a good rank. Focus on that team
      * When you feel someone else might score higher, it is OK to not captain RVP
      * That said, its not entirely true as RVP's average per game is closer to 7+

Well ... you have both ignored Cazorla/Bale, of which Bale is the more important. The important thing is to try to catch these "events" if you can. There was a van Persie one earlier, too.

I like that separated the captaincy between RVP and others... also very interesting to see that his average scores are less than the others average...

Now I wonder if we were to take the average score of RVP per game, and match that against the times when you captained him, if it show that overall you have picked him when he has performed over the times he hasn't...

      Let me look into that...

It is interesting to note that RVPs overall average score per game is 6.68... when matched against the times you have captained him (6.20), this suggests that you have actually picked him in several more of his under-performances to get a lower score...

I just went through the top team in the Overall league.
      Overall point = 1207
      Points from captain = 290
(290/1207) x100%. Which means only 24.02% of his points came from captain.
Meanwhile my team rank at 58k, but 26.5% of my points came from captains.

Overall team is more important than just one individual captain, but this 'conclusion' is just based on these two teams.
Can anyone do the same thing for the other top 10 teams? Some really interesting topic going on here. 😀

    C) Holt (6.0) - - - - MCI, whm, NEW, liv, TOT

As main striker at the club with DGW coming up, there is some value at 4.9.

I considered him as an option with him being my 8th attacking player, so have Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini, RVP, Aguero

Just 2 games ago Villa were considered "solid" as well.
I cant see a clean sheet for Sunderland, but I wouldnt captain Bale.

I haven't really assessed the Jan WC and when I'm planning to use it. (I know, signs of being a poor manager). But when are you chaps planning to use it and the reason behind using it that particular week?

Another in depth discussion i want here. 3 mistakes you have made this season which could have seen you shoot higher. I think about these constantly and being placed fairly high in the rankings, i keep thinking about where i could have been otherwise.

    1) Missing out on Cazorla's 23 point freak haul. Lost a lot of ground there.
    2) Benching Michu for a 16 pointer vs. Arsenal. I did not play Michu because i had Mert and despite deciding to hedge the bets, i decided to roll the dice.
    Two important lessons learnt :
ALWAYS hedge your bets. Greenwindmill hand an excellent post regarding this i remember.
Bench Sterling when you have a strong option like Michu. Don't be too swayed by fixtures.
    3) Being patient. There are two coins to this one. I lost patience with Tevez and sold him just before his 19pter. That said, Suarez scored 2 goals that same GW. I was convinced about Bale this week and did Silva -> Bale(-4). Crucial move in the context of the game.

I'd like to know about yours as well.

The one mistake that got the ball rolling (downhill) was taking out Bale after 3 blanks...

The first of many bad decisions I've made...

I'm determined to be more patient second half of the season...
