The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Wednesday

Rafa’s weakened lineup get turned over by Harry’s boys as Shaun Wright-Phillips returns to haunt the Stamford Bridge regulars. There’s no such shock at Anfield as Luis Suarez fills his boots again, whilst Leighton Baines’ wonder strike inspires an Everton win at St James’ Park…

On the Up

Luis Suarez
Seemingly everpresent in this article in over recent Gameweeks, Suarez once again delivered the goods for Liverpool, chipping in with his fourth and fifth goals in the last four league matches, whilst providing the assist for Raheem Sterling’s opener. Scoring back-to-back braces for the first time in his Liverpool career, his stock remain buoyant, his ownership and price on the climb. While Suarez has United and Arsenal in the next three, his form is so strong, that’s unlikely to be a factor that will perturb investors.

Steven Gerrard
The skipper goes on delivering: his pair of assists tonight means that Gerrard has now returned in his last six outings. Slowly but surely, Fantasy managers are waking up to his consistency – Gerrard’s ownership is steadily on the rise and his price has climbed to 9.4. Suarez, for just 0.9 more, remains the stronger option by some margin, however.

Raheem Sterling
The 18-year-old operates in a different price bracket to the Liverpool heavy-hitters and, with his opening goal tonight, he delivered his first strike since Gameweek 8. Before this evening’s game, Sterling had just a single assist in his last nine league appearances – form that was beginning to call his value, even at 5.6, into question. They’ll be no such doubts for a while, despite the arrival of Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool Defence
A third clean sheet in four games brought Brendan Rodgers’ defence to the fore and with Andre Wisdom back in the side, Fantasy managers will certainly be taking note. The young full-back would surely only be a short-term option with Jose Enrique sidelined and with United and Arsenal to come, the “wisdom” of such a move seems limited.

Leighton Baines
A stunning thirty-yard free-kick brought Baines’ owners their first major returns since Gameweek 5. Before tonight, the Everton left-back had delivered just two assists in 13 league outings. While the clean sheet was again off the menu, Baines’ strike offered a timely reminder of his qualities ahead of a Gameweek 22 home meeting with Swansea.

Marouane Felliani
There was talk before the game that the Belgian could be dropped back to a deeper role with Darron Gibson sidelined but, with David Moyes drafting in Phil Neville and dropping Victor Anichebe, it’s clear that Fellaini is set for the long-haul in an advanced role. He hardly dazzled but his physical presence played its part, earning the free-kick which was converted by Baines to give Felliani immediate assist returns.

Papiss Cisse
While Demba Ba negotiates his way out of St James’ Park, Cisse is trying to reinstate himself as Newcastle’s hitman. His opening strike tonight was his second in three matches and, with Alan Pardew suggesting prior to the match that Cisse will eventually lead the attack back in a central role, he is gradually coming in from the cold as a Fantasy option.

The QPR Defence
Nobody would have backed the R’s defence for a shutout at Stamford Bridge having witnessed Luis Suarez tear them apart last time out. Rafa’s teamsheet may have played its part in helping Harry Redknapp motivate his side and that factor shouldn’t be underestimated. While Harry will surely bring in plenty of new blood, the likes of Ryan Nelsen may remain a mainstay and could provide strong value if Redknapp can go on inspiring similar performances.

Going Down

Rafa Benitez
It would be harsh to dent the stock of the players involved when it’s Rafa’s rotation policy that is to blame. Tonight’s decision to rest all three of the players who supported Fernando Torres at Goodison came as a shock – it’s the first time Chelsea have started a league game this season without both Eden Hazard or Juan Mata. With Ashley Cole also preserved, it’s become clear that nobody is safe from an occasional rest. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, but that fails to sweeten the pill and introduces an unwelcome variable when considering Chelsea assets. You have to wonder, however, having suffered a shock defeat, whether Rafa will think again when it comes to underestimating opponents with his team selection.

Fernando Torres
The Spaniard survived Rafa’s rotation cull to lead the attack but drew a blank for the third successive league outing. With Demba Ba in talks and Benitez hinting that a rest for Torres is in his plans, those still clinging to El Nino will surely be fidgeting and considering their options.

Demba Ba
His absence from Newcatle’s lineup came as an immediate blow to his Fantasy owners – his pending move to Chelsea may dent his stock further. Having witnessed Rafa’s rotation policy at work tonight, few will relish the prospects of Ba being part of that, regardless of the prospect of improved service.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

on a LOAN i would actually love that :D. not sure why he's been kept out of the squad as he's a brilliant player and a great finisher. a loan would allow a bit more playing time for sanchez pedro and tello which would be good too

I'd wouldn't mind seeing thiago and dos santos going out on loan til the end of the season. would give them some good experience imo

only way i'd be okay with selling villa is if was to get money to buy neymar. yes he may be a bit overhyped but I think him combining with messi, supported by fabregas xavi and iniesta (and thiago) and sanchez/pedro/tello/cuenca would be brilliant

oh right! must've been a tough year last year huh?

we'll trade you 91 goals in a year messi for 260 goals in 18 minutes sterling, then everyone will fear us ;).

if that happened we'd probably just use the rest of our squad and B team to fill the gaps :D.

oh and then there's Deulofeu who's supposed to be very promising but I haven't seen him play yet... it's all about the academy my friend!

Some so called Arsenal ITK on twitter is adamant that Arsenal are trying to get either Villa or Adrian Lopez frm Athletico Madrid. Would love Villa. I think he is done at Barcelona. That Iniesta - Jordi Alba combination on the left wing is deadly and Messi plays as a striker/ false 9. No place for him.

Assuming I go for an uber-cheap defence what kind of combo do you prefer?

    Mata Bale Caz Fellaini Puncheon
    RVP Aguero 7.0-9.0m striker

(3 heavy mids, one of Fella/Michu and cheapo like Puncheon, or if I went for a 7m mid I could upgrade Puncheon to 5-7m more playable mid)

    OR

    Mata Bale Michu Fellla Puncheon
    RVP Aguero Suarez

(Top heavy strikeforce with Michu and Fella and only 2 'Heavy' mids)

Sorry to be going on about this but need to weigh up my options.

    Thoughts appreciated, cheers

I agree Aguero will score more than Silva (20-30p at the end of season then). But you always captain RVP, Aguero could miss some games due to rotation, subbed off early when Silva will start most game.

Wthi RVP- Suarez up front, Silva 9.4M is acceptable, If you pick Aguero too, it's too expensive.

But you're forgetting Hanamichi that Aguero is just as explosive as Suarez and RVP and generally very consistent. Plus he has penalties over both of them. There is more risk involved but he would be in the top 5 Captaincy options almost every week. There's not a fixture you wouldn't feel confident about him in when he's on form.

Aguero: 5, 1, 2, 11, 11 the last 5 weeks and he's only really hit form the last 2. If he isn't injured he is far better than Silva, even though he's ticking along nicely atm.

The latter for me. You can always alternate Michu/Fellaini with other options (like Snod/Pilks/Walcott/etc..) whenever form or fixtures aren't to your liking.

As you say the defence will be uber cheap but if you monitor them closely you should do ok. You will just miss out on most attacking returns that the expensive defenders often bring to the table.

In saying all this it is just a game and you can always change things around if you don't think it's working out.

Thanks ILB, lots to think about there...I guess I don't want to find myself trapped post-WC with no way out. If I go cheap I'll be really ruing it if it doesn't work out short term and might spend time rearranging things and it might cost me. That's the problem with WC ideas...they feel so definitive so you want to do it right.

But it's true, just a game so hopefully I can approach it in a good way and have some fun with it. Just not sure whether to press the WC button this week or see if I can hang on with what I've got for a little longer so I can get info on other things. Hmmm...

Well I would likely go with this defence

Cuellar (nailed on/vice captain/already own him)
            Turner (nailed on CB 4.1m)
            Davies (nailed on LB 4.2m)
Demel (usually nailed on when fit and no mcCartney around 4.0m)
Pearce (Reading 3.8m, looks like he may now be nailed on)

            Other options:

            Shaw (4.0m Southampton)
            Nelsen (4.1m QPR Club captain)
Jones (4.5m West Brom, not nailed on but has impressed)
Clark (4.4m Aston Villa, nailed on CB)
            Wilkinson (4.4m nailed on LB)
Ramis (4.4m Wigan nailed on CB)

Yeah it can be frustrating. It is a gamble whatever way you go really. (Not something I have to worry about with my poor value). Go with your gut as to what is right as your head and others opinions may get in the way. 🙂

One thing I have learned on this game is that whenever I've had a bad points week I have made transfers to 'fix' things which always seem to backfire. On the flip side to that though, whenever I have just left things be, it has bounced back positively.

Good luck with your decision SU.

the first 7 GWs when he wasnt injured he scored 2 goals (thats allright) but finished 90 minutes only once and was rested for one game. this will be the case also in future. podolskiesque substitutions around 60 min. also didnt get any bonus for his two goals. opinions of his fantasy potential are swayed because of the team he plays for. in reality, you can't justify paying 7.9 for a shitty mid when fellaini is less and when it's allready hard to pick 4/5 mids of all the good options.

imo, kagawa is not gonna score much + he's expensive. kind of like sterling, only more expensive. besides, the top does not have fellaini atm. i dont like thinking too much about differentials anyway, its only just over halfpoint of the season. pick the best players.

remember what happened to valencia last
      season?
I think we will see the exact thing with kagawa.
Valencia has been horrible this season.
Young will be shifted to the right.
While rooney will go to the left. Or kagawa will be at the left.
But definitely he will get the game times. He is to

Nice run! I've only managed 3 in a row so far but have just broke into the top 10K which I'm happy about. I remember last season where I think I got at least 12 in a row towards the end of the season managing to finish 324 (stupidly benched Evans in the last game as Ferguson said he was injured and lost a ton of points as a result). A bit concerned with my team value though. If I keep my forward line and bring in Mata and Fellaini for Cazorla and Maloney I'll have to keep Bunn and Federici in goal and downgrade my defence so all are between 3.8M and 4.9M.

    Guide to Uber-cheapsville defence

My Personal immediate template at the moment

Cuellar (nailed on/vice captain/already own him)
    Turner (nailed on CB 4.1m)
    Davies (nailed on LB 4.2m)
Demel (usually nailed on when fit and no mcCartney around 4.0m)
Pearce (Reading 3.8m, looks like he may now be nailed on)

    Other options:

    Shaw (4.0m Southampton)
    Nelsen (4.1m QPR Club captain)
Jones (4.4m West Brom, not nailed on but has impressed)
Clark (4.4m Aston Villa, nailed on CB)
    Wilkinson (4.4m nailed on LB)
Ramis (4.4m Wigan nailed on CB)
Hughes (4.4m Fulham nailed on CB)

    Risky punts for the craic

Naughton (4.2m Spurs, might play occasionally enough to justify having him)
    Dawson (4.5m ditto)
    Wisdom (4.3m ditto)

I just used the most nailed on guy for each team really. I'd be more confident about Pearce than Harte because of age/Shorey. I'm speculating about Pearce but it seems since he's came in they have been much more solid. Either way...at 3,8m they're both great if they were to continue in the side.

Other example is Martin vs Turner. Both good options...just maybe Turner is more nailed on because Whittaker might fight Martin for his place.

The priority has to be that these defenders must be nailed on as we are going to need 15 players during Jan-Feb.

Martin played CB once against Swansea (they conceded 3 😐 )

But RB is his natural position and that was only because Turner was injured he played CB. Bassong and Turner I feel is the CB partnership. I do have suspicions over it though...like yourself. Will have to monitor it closely.

One thing I've noticed though is that Turner has only been out of the side because of injuries and any time he comes back he goes straight back into the side.

Yeah I guess I'm saying this as a hunch, that Pearce basically to me looks their most solid defender and therefore should stay in the side. Gorkss is woeful it seems and Mariappa is appalling. They should actually go Morrison and Pearce and they might stand a chance.

Although, I really don't like Suarez's fixtures (3 away games to tough teams in the next 4) so I'm not positive yet. I'd much prefer to own suarez after that run if possible. But having him in case he goes mental again would be nice and it's getting frustrating watching him get all these goals. The Ba situation has me changing strategy. Which is a little frustrating as he was a great cheap alternative to Suarez.

Turner could get rotated with Barnett.
      Clint Hill is QPR captain.

Pearce will lose his spot to Shorey once Nicky recovers from that virus.

I don't think Barnett is all that in favour. Hughton signed Turner and Bassong which tells you he values them and sees them as the CB partnership. But I do agree there is some possibility of rotation.

Wasn't aware Hill was now Captain, Nelsen was before I remember.

Wilko...sure this guy can play anywhere. 🙂

Pearce is CB so Shorey won't be taking his place.

Quality. That's quite a benching dilemna you have there. ARS might struggle v City so Wal or Mata at STK possibly.

Which big hit defender would you most want in your squad for next dozen GW?

    Luiz
    Baines
    Evans, or other Man U
    Zabeleta, or other City
    G. Johnson
    any Arsenal

I want Luiz (OOP) or Baines (my FPL guilty pleasure)

In 3 GWs I have jumped from 773k to 174k with getting only one cleansheat(Nelson this GW). Hence proved, defenders(or heavy hitting defs) are not-so-important, atleast for this season. Agree?
PS- This is my first ever season in FPL, so don't judge by rank. It has been a steep learning curve. :p
