Spot the Differential – Gameweek 22

As always, Friday evening closes with some overlooked alternatives for your consideration. Our trio of protagonists all have favourable home games on their respective agendas and while a couple of them are looking to maintain their impressive displays, our final selection will be hoping for a return to the form that ripped apart Premier League defences in the latter part of the previous campaign:

Bryan Ruiz

With many Fantasy managers opting for Dimitar Berbatov as a route into Fulham’s attack, the Costa Rican has been significantly overlooked. The statistics, however, highlight just how consistent Ruiz has been for Martin Jol’s side this season – he has scored or assisted in eight of his 12 appearances so far and averaged 4.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points per game. Indeed, his pivotal role for the Cottagers is summed up by their goal returns – Fulham have found the net 25 times in the 12 games with Ruiz in the side in comparison to seven goals in the 10 games without him.

Having recovered from a recent hamstring injury, Ruiz has made an immediate impact, producing a goal, an assist and a couple of bonus points since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 20. Tucked in behind Berbatov, his creativity makes up for the fact he has found the net just twice – Ruiz has eight assists to his name, a tally beaten by only two other forwards; Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, with 10 and nine respectively. Coming in at just 5.4 in FPL and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of around 1% in both games, he looks a strong differential for tomorrow’s home clash with Wigan and looks a real alternative for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a 3-5-2 first choice formation with their winter wildcards.

Steven Fletcher

The summer signing from Wolves has been key to Sunderland’s attacking forays this term. Since making his debut in Gameweek 3, Fletcher has played a part in 11 of the Black Cats’ subsequent 19 goals, finding the net eight times and supplying a trio of assists. The Scot has been something of a talisman for Martin O’Neill’s side this term – Sunderland have yet to lose a game in which he has scored and, as a result, Fletcher has also picked up 20 bonus points; only Van Persie, with 25, has collected more.

Coming in at just 7.0 in FPL, he’s the seventh top scoring forward, having racked up 94 points so far – an average of 4.9 points per game. While a home clash with West Ham affords him the chance to further his appeal, Fletcher has a favourable schedule over the next few Gameweeks which could see him continue to rack up the points. Priced at 7.7 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of 5% in FPL, he may prove a canny acquisition in the mid-price bracket as O’Neill looks Fletcher to provide the goals to engineer a scramble up the table for the Wearsiders.

Papiss Cisse

Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea brings his former Newcastle team mate back on the radar after an admittedly disappointing 2012/13 campaign so far. Arriving at Tyneside in last season’s winter transfer window, Cisse took the Premier League by storm, grabbing 13 goals and a pair of assists in just 14 appearances as the central forward in a 4-3-3.

Alan Pardew’s decision to shift Ba into the middle, either in a 4-4-2 alongside his compatriot or as the lone striker in a 4-3-3, proved hugely detrimental to Cisse’s prospects, with the former SC Freiburg man mustering a mere four goals over 19 appearances so far. Tomorrow’s trip to Norwich offers Cisse the chance to finally return to his favoured role and with the Canaries conceding in each of their last nine, he looks an enticing option, with a home game against Reading to follow next time out. Coming in at 8.8 in FPL and 9.3 in the Sky Sports game, Cisse’s lowly FPL ownership of 3% is understandable given his exploits so far, but he could be a different proposition altogether if he comes anywhere close to replicating last terms displays.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not trying to detract from Ba's essential status this GW, but we all know how reoccurring these hamstring injuries are, I think the safe option is to give Mata the armband.

That's basically the only option, unless you want gratuitous flair in getting Hazard. He might have a slightly better chance of playing both games, IMO.

But his goal threat isn't great for the price.

I reckon Cech will play. He’s travelling with the squad then being assessed. It’s against Stoke. And Turnbull is garbage. It is almost certain that Turnbull won’t play both games, so for me there is no longer any point having him.

imho Ba will score more at CHE even if he's benched sometimes , than what he scored at NEW. That should be enough. The guy walked in a few days back, supposedly with a minor hamstring problem, for 10 mins and scored a goal plus 2-3 great chances... He's a goal machine

heyyyyy mate my team looks like this now :
          http://i46.tinypic.com/2v86928.png
i did turnbull > bunn because cech will be back for at least one game IMO.
i also benched michu. i think puncheon will get an assist and walcott playing as a striker is promising.
          what do u think ?

I completely changed my team mate, my dillema of getting Luiz but not wanting to lose Zab, led me to change I think overall my team looks more balanced now, had to lose Bale though, lost a little team value getting Luiz and Davies back but hey ho.

            Bego/Rudd
            Gibbs/Zab/Luiz/Demel/Davies
            Mata/Walcott/Michu/Fellaini/Puncheon
            Rvp/Suarez/Ba

I thought about benching Walcott for Puncheon but the fact he is likely to play as the main striker this weeks means I'm not prepared to risk benching him, I'm going to play Michu as well, his form is too impressive and I learned the hard way when I benched him against Arsenal so think I will bench Puncheon.

so u went with same front 8 as me with a better defender ( Zab ) ! . looks really good. i feel so sure punchy will get an assist so its at least 7 pts for him (without bonuses) im really hesitating between him and michu

I've just noticed how similar our teams are oh well great minds think alike, Punch not produced anything for a while now so either he is due or he is out of form, I liked the look of the team I originally had but the more I looked on it the more doubts I had about Aspi and I would have pretty much been relying on my 11 week in week out, a few injuries and I would have been faced with having to play Guthrie and/or Mariappa not ideal.

You not fancy Clyne over Shaw Meule? Better attacking potential, or are you a bit concerned he won't walk straight back into the team?

Someone in my league already got Clyne , i want to have an 'original' player to be honest 🙂 its the only reason lol. You said punch not produced anything in a while but he did an assist last game against Arsenal, not worth considering ?

Its a toss of a coin mate I can't see him getting much against Chelsea so he has to produce the goods against Villa for me which he is capable of doing, Everton havnt kept a clean sheet since think it's gameweek 2 something else worth considering

    Lukas Podolski... Discuss.

I think hes been a big success and not getting the credit he deserves:
Played 1322 minutes in the PL and has 6 goals 6 assists, Carzola has played 1755 and in all them extra minutes has gotten just 1 more goal and 1 more assist, yet Carzola getting a huge amount of praise, Carzola is a joy to watch yes and i think he's been great but Podolski is just as effective if not more effective. Played out on the left too so no-one can argue that he is playing as a forward or playing more advanced because he's not really compared to where Carzola plays.

Oh yeah and 3 goals in 5 games in champions league, Carzola no goals. Just saying.

I think caz brings more to the team in the same modric did for spurs. I don't rate pod really but he is being played out of position by wenger. He is not fast enough/tricky/fit enough to play wing and should be up top. This has hampered his progress big time

but 4 of podolski's 6 goals were when arsenal ran riot (6-1 vs southampton, 5-2 vs tot & reading & 7-3 vs newcastle). Hasn't exactly be clutch when they need him to be. Cazorla is so integral to arsenal clicking. He was practically a one man team the first 10 gameweeks.

Completely invalid point considering Carzola got his hat trick in the 5-2 riot vs Reading and Walcott got 3 vs Newcastle, does that mean their goals don't count?!

no it means Podolski hasn't contributed more to the team than Cazorla and is getting just as much credit as he deserves. Subbed almost every game, scoring OK but not when the team really needs it. I expected more dominance from him. The first 2-3 games he looked great, but he goes missing alot.

Being subbed isn't his fault its the managers choice just like Wenger chose to keep Walcott on the bench all those game the fans were calling for him to play doesn't mean Wenger was right.
Goes missing a bit possibly due to him not playing in his preferred spot perhaps?

I didn't see him play for Cologne, but on Germany he plays on the left doesn't he? That one game early on (maybe GW 3 or 4) he played up top instead of Giroud and I honestly thought he looked lost. He was always so deep and showing for the ball with his back to goal in the final third instead of looking to run in behind (same thing GD chamakh always does).

I don't want to take up too contrarian a position to your initial point... I'm happy Arsenal have podolski and not another ligue 1 flop, and he's clearly class. I think he could do even more though.

No goals or assists in them 5 champions league games either for Carzola and in the FA cup Podolski has 1 goal from 1 App, Carzola has 0 goals and 1 assist from 2 appearences.

      * have no access to Podolski's assists in FA Cup or Champions League but i'm sure he has contributed to a few as well.

I like Podolski a lot. Reliable, very competent finisher, hardworking, and excellent technique (see his volleyed goal in the Champions League). Perhaps a sense that he lacks the X-factor of greatness - he doesn't change games by himself. But he's been shunted out of his preferred center forward role on the left and so I can understand if that has limited his opportunities somewhat.

I was surprised we didn't try him in the center forward role when we seemed to have none.

I agree....Cazorla does seem to play deeper often. Put when he decides (or when Wenger gives him the green light) to go forward it is a thing of beauty and very dangerous.

That said....my plan is to go Lambert>Podolski for free next week.

I have Bale Fellaini Walcott Michu Puncheon.

Do not want to do 3-5-2 so RVP Berbs Ba remains up top.

        Mata for Bale - worrying.

Mata for Walcott. Madness with DGW next week.
