A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

      1. I cant ketchup with all these horse joke but I will, Neigh a bother!

  2. What to do ?
Have 1 FT, and im tempting Pogrebnyak in for Dong - Won Ji (i know, i know - reason price catch)

    Begovic
    Luiz, Sagna, Davies
Bale, Mata, Santi Cazorla (V), Michu, Walcott (C)
    Van Persie, Suarez

Sub: Cerny, Clyne, Nelsen, Dong-Won Ji
    0.3 in the bank

    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks in advance mates !

  3. 1ft, 0.0 ITB. What to do?

    a) Sterling > Noble/Puncheon
    b) Cashley > Zab
    c) Defoe > Giroud
    d) Ba > Podolski

    1. I'm doing D

    2. Replied on the last page mate. If I was you I'd do Sterling to Puncheon and Defoe to Podolski. Assuming Podolski plays both games (I know, not guaranteed) then it's really only a two point hit.

  4. Azpi or Clyne this week?

    Thoughts appreciated.

    1. i will choose chelskis defender

    2. Azpi

  5. Views on my wild card team please guys

    . Bego bunn
    Zabaleta Davies demel cameron R.martin
    Fellani bale michu mata walcott
    Rvp suarez pogrebnyak

Still on wild card so criticism welcome.thanks

    1. Or is this better

      Begi bunn
R martin davies figuero demel cameron
      Mata michu fellani walcott puncheon
      Rvp aguero suarez

      1. Suarez to Sturridge then invest in your defence, this one.

    2. I wouldnt double stoke in their current form, maybe boyce or dawson for cameron

  6. Anyone think Nolan is ever going to do anything again?

    1. No, never.

      1. Villa should sign him so :D

        1. We'd make him even worse, if that's possible.

    2. Nolan/Carroll is a tried and tested partnership, so only worth a look when Carroll is back, I think. But he will come back on the radar at some stage.

  7. Any Hammers fans out there know what the score with Noble is?. Will he play any part in the DGW?

  8. anyone keeping BA??

    1. I'm getting rid. I can't be arsed with worrying about the team sheet every week.

      1. yeh i think i might have to as well. i have mata as part of the famous 5. will shift ba to podolski probably

        1. what if you got Ba at 7.7?

      2. Yeah waiting for Aguero to get fit though.

    2. yeah gonna give it more time

  9. Good morning guys and gals...

Currently on WC and seeking some inspiration. Any player with any price tag whom you may see as a differential/sleeper. Any suggestions welcome.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Dave

    1. Rooney.

      1. One on the shortlist with Kun dropping RVP to accomodate the move. Easy captain choice each week but concerned about reckless and sacrificing my good start..

        thanks for the suggestion

    2. Lennon for spurs cover if you don't have enough funds for bale
      silva
nani if he can nail down first team spot

    3. Aguero, Gerrard

      1. Me likes these choices.

        1. going for aguero myself. gerrard only if/when one of the fab5 midfielders get injured or out of form.

    4. Sturridge, big time.

  10. Joe Cole found his way in to my team :( Will he play at all?

    1. I think so. It's worth a punt for the DGW but don't have too high expectations.

    2. I'm considering him, anyone know why he wasn't even on the bench last night?

      1. COW
        • Reputation Level: Scout

        Keeping him fresh.

Didnt think they would win i guess. So no point in playing him.

  11. Which is the better option? (Already used my wildcard) A and B is for a hit.

    A) Luiz > Nasty and Ba>Aguero
    B) Berbatov> Sturridge and Ba > Dzeko
    C) Berbatov > Sturridge
    D) Berbatov > Podolski

    Begovic - Bunn

    Luiz - Gibbs - Demel - Davies - Harte

    Mata - Fellani - Bale - Walcott - Puncheon

    RVP - Ba - Berbatov

    Thanks.

    1. D - if theres anything iv learnt from this dwgk , its that 2 games make a big diff even if the second game is tough.

i had lambert and clyne all the way and then took risk of not having them as they has chelsea away as one fixture

    2. D for me.

    3. I like D as well.

  12. After sturridge changed the game against united is he likely to play 70+ minutes every week. With the large savings that can be made is he a good option in place of suarez?

    1. once he is 100% fit he will start, which is imminent. Thats why I have suggested above opting for him instead of Suarez and investing in your defence.

    2. Yes i think so, he's my intended transfer for this wk. Pool usually batter Norwich, even if Suarez gets his usual hat trick, sureley Sturridge will assist. A few tricky weeks after this one tho. Ba - Sturr this week, the probably back again following wk, when chelsea have reading.

  13. R E P O S T

    What to do ?
Have 1 FT, and im tempting Pogrebnyak in for Dong – Won Ji (i know, i know – reason price catch)

    Luiz, Sagna, Davies
Bale, Mata, Santi Cazorla (V), Michu, Walcott (C)

    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance mates !

    1. No point in doing Dong --> Pogrebnyak if he's on the bench.

You're best off leaving him on the bench this week and having 2 FT next week.

      1. i thought maybe for price catch, but totally agree with you ;)

        1. Certainly not worth it for the sake of £0.1m in the second half of the season. Gives you a lot more flexibility next week.

    2. save it

    3. Out of curiousity, how did you end up with Dong-Won?

  14. Having paid just 4.4 for Jason Puncheon I was was planning to get rid in my WC but last nights goal is forcing me to re-consider. So the question is, is Punch a season keeper or do I trade?

    1. He's pretty good for the structure of your team .. i.e. cheap midfielder, benchable.. which I why I went for Noble. It depends on the trade off though - what would you do instead?

      1. I was planning to revert to the power 5 strategy, but am thinking now that I may just stick with my existing midfield of Mata Wallcott Michu Fellain Punch.

    1. Is Zaha any use?

  15. I have to say I was really impressed with the Coquelin/Diaby partnership lastnight.

  16. Thoughts on this. Currently have wildcard active and have changed team to this, and going to use other wildcard after this double gameweek. Is this a good tactic to maximise this double gameweek?

    Jask (Begovic)
    Williamson, Zabaleta, Skrtel, (Davis, Clyne)
Silva, Santi, Nolan, Walcott Captain, (Gerrard)
    Podolski, Suarez, Cole

6 players double gameweek and 2 Man City/Liverpool players. Unsure whether to play Gerrard or Silva as I think both teams will do well with favourable home fixtures? Is it wise to use a wildcard solely to benifit from a double gameweek. I have fallen from around 1000 to 25000 in the overall rankings in recent weeks and need to give myself a quick boost. Cheers.

  17. Who do u think will get more points for DGW

    A Pod

    Or

    B Scezney

  18. Take a hit for Podolski? Or Giroud for free?

  19. cole to any 1 def to free up cash
    and then punch to nolan
berba to pod for -8 hit
worht a risk ? will WC after DGW

  20. Labert-------------->podolski

    or

    Ba-------------->Suarez

    or

    STICK!!

  21. These horse jokes are playing havoc with my 'ctrl+f' "horse" :)

    1. :D

      I advise a change of username ;)

  22. Any news on Noble?

  23. Zab, Gibbs or Luiz

  24. How's my team looking? all set? did the predictable Ba >Pod

    http://i.imgur.com/lyqyp.png

    1. I am tempted to do the same with Ba , but I had him for 7.5, which is an absolute bargain now...

    2. Did u use your WC? There might be some gems coming in during the transfer...

  25. Any idea how close Wilson is to returning to Stoke??

  26. Green/ Bego
    Gibbs, Bassong, Clyne, Debunchy, Demel
    Michu, Walcott, Punch, Mata, Fellani
    Lambert, RVP, Ba

Any suggestions to improves this team?

“I love to attack and I love to go up front...It is a little more difficult than when you are playing centre-back. If you play the way that I want to play, I think my influence is better as a left-back. For the team, it is best that I play as a centre-back. I like to bring the ball out. You need to move the game quickly, and that is one of my qualities as well.”
