Scout Report – Yoan Gouffran

Newcastle continued their French shopping spree yesterday after acquiring Yoan Gouffran from Bordeaux on a four-and-a-half year deal. With just six months remaining on his contract, the 26-year-old forward moves to St James’ Park for a bargain fee believed to be in the region of £1.5m, and is the third player to arrive from Ligue 1 this month, following Mathieu Debuchy and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to the club.

Having lost top scorer Demba Ba to Chelsea, strengthening the attacking positions was always going to be a priority for Alan Pardew and, with Hatem Ben Arfa still sidelined with an ongoing hamstring problem, the Magpies boss spoke of his delight after bringing the versatile Gouffran to Tyneside:

“Yoan comes to the club with a great pedigree and, like the other signings we have made this month, is a player who will add considerable strength to our squad. I liked the look of him when we played Bordeaux at St. James’ Park earlier this season; pacy, direct and intelligent and those are qualities I like in a footballer. I am sure he will quickly adapt to the rigours and intensity of the Premier League and play an important role for us for the remainder of the season.”

The Statistics

For someone who is allergic to grass, Gouffran has made an impressive start to his career. Starting off in the French lower divisions with FC Caen, he helped his side earn promotion to Ligue 1 in 2006-07, with a 15 goal haul earning him the Ligue 2 Player of the Year award. Over five years with the club, he produced 33 goals and seven assists from 115 appearances before being snapped up by Bordeaux in June 2008.

Gouffran’s debut campaign for his new club proved somewhat bittersweet – his winner against Caen in the final game of the season clinched the Ligue 1 title for Bordeaux but sent his former side back down into the second tier. Over his time at Bordeaux, Gouffran produced 31 goals and 11 assists from 139 league appearances, though his final couple of campaigns were particularly impressive, with 22 goals and three assists accrued from his final 54 Ligue 1 matches before making his way to Tyneside. He has also turned out for the France U21 side on 22 occasion, finding the net three times, though has yet to receive a call-up at senior level.

The Prospects

Certainly, Gouffran is no like-for-like replacement for Demba Ba. Standing five foot nine, his pace and trickery in possession means he’s equally as comfortable on the flank as he is through the middle. Alan Pardew has the option of utilising the new boy as a strike partner for Papiss Cisse in a 4-4-2 or fielding him out wide in a 4-3-3, with Hatem Ben Arfa – when fit – also flanking the Senegalese striker.

Given that the latter formation seems to suit Cisse better, Gouffran is perhaps more likely to be fielded out wide, despite the fact he’s plundered 10 goals from 23 appearances in all competitions through the middle for Bordeaux this season. New team mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa summed up Gouffran’s main attributes:

“I have met him several times, and played against him in the French league. He is the type of player that gives us defenders a lot of work, he makes us work very hard. He runs deep, collects the ball, and holds it up very well. He lets the team get forward, and gives the team chances to counter attack. He’s good on the ball, and that would be something very useful for the team.”

Faith in Newcastle’s Fantasy assets is understandably low after a poor season finds them just two points above the drop zone with 15 matches remaining. Cisse is now the club’s top scorer with four strikes, while Cabaye and Ben Arfa are next best with three goals apiece – given that the former has two appearances since Gameweek 12 and the latter has featured once since Gameweek 13, it’s a damning indictment of the current squad’s minimal contributions and certainly bodes well for Gouffran’s game time, as Pardew looks to the new boy to boost his side’s attacking potential.

His arrival looks set to place question marks over the game time of Sylvain Marveaux – the latter has now started the last five and has been eyed up as a potential bargain at 4.3 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but may struggle to retain his starting berth. A FPL price in the region of 7.0 seems realistic – considering Ba started off at 7.5 – but many will be happy to hold fire and assess Gouffran’s role within the team before considering his potential.

His Fantasy prospects could come down to his classification, though. Gouffran looks likely to be listed as a forward – given his starting role for Bordeaux – but with Ben Arfa down as a midfielder and Cisse now set to play through the middle regardless of formation, the new boy could well struggle to persuade investors unless Pardew has him earmarked for a central berth. Like Everton’s Kevin Mirallas, then, he may find himself on the periphery of our thinking – a great talent whose possible reverse out of position role could significantly limit his appeal.

    REPOST

Only just seen the article about Wilson from:

    http://www.thisisstaffordshire.....story.html

Saying he hopes to be back to full fitness for the Sweden international game on 22nd March….

I now have a 4.0 defender missing 3 key home fixtures. Got 0.7 in the bank….

    Long story short

    Best defender for GW24, 26, 28, 30, 32 for under 4.7 or less?

      link is dead,

But Stoke definitely. I reckon Wilson will be back arond GW 27, so Wilkinson for now for that price or Cameron if you can stretch a little more.

Chelsea also got good fixtures, but none at those price. Azpil is the value in that team.

There are none anywhere near as good, unless you've got the extra £0.2m for Cameron. Failing that, Ben Davies is a decent option but you already have him. Sunderland are decent in those weeks too but not sure who I'd go for if Cuellar isn't available.

Guys do we think Lampard is nailed on (at least whilst Mikel is away?)

If he is he could be a great differential. Seems to finding form, plus he has pens. Not sure yet that I'd consider him over Mata but it could be worth monitoring no?

Regarding Everton's formation against WBA, I reckon the likeliest, as used when Mirallas was available, is:
    ---------Jelavic
    Pienaar Fellaini Mirallas
    ------Neville Osman

If Coleman's knock against Southampton keeps him out, Neville should play RB. This should bring in Hitzlsperger as happened earlier in the season.
    ---------Jelavic
    Pienaar Fellaini Mirallas
    ------Hitzlsperger Osman

There's perhaps a slight risk Jelavic is dropped. Anichebe could replace him at CF, or Mirallas replace him at CF and Anichebe or Naismith play right wing.

IMO, Fellaini is only in danger of playing CM if all of Mirallas, Anichebe, Jelavic and Pienaar start together in which case Anichebe would probably play CAM. I don't see all starting together though. Anichebe has been playing on the wings a bit to cover for Mirallas' absence, and Pienaar shifting to CAM when Fellaini was suspended. I think he'll be out again now.

Well, he seems only to be used on the right wing and Mirallas looks like first choice there, so I'm not expecting much gametime from Naismith while mirallas is fit (5 days, probably). It'd only mess Fellaini up if Naismith pushed Mirallas into the hole, but I don't see precedent for that in the games so far this season.

Felli won't revert to DM. Moyes has said it himself recently referring to him as capable of cementing the Cahill role long term. Like you say only mass injuries could change this. Also if Coleman isn't fit it's more likely jags will be rb and heitinga comes in as has happened before Xmas.

Ah yeah, Jags. Yeah I suppose it will be different when Moyes gets to pick the squad beforehand instead of adjust midway.

Would love to see the Moyes quote. My understanding is Moyes wants to use him in the Cahill role but Fellaini quite likes cm 😆

Dude that's exactly what I'm saying. We agree on that! Fellaini was advanced in the first half. He wasn't in the second, because Coleman got injured, so Neville went RB, so fellaini went CM.

Whether Fellaini was getting chances at cam is a different issue, but he was at cam until an injury forced him to move, is my point.

We can agree on that right?

Felli playing deep was tactical change due to colemans injury. I don't think moyes likes hitz so that was a last resort and heitinga wasn't fully fit so it was the obvious tactical change to make going off what moyes has done this season.

      Azpilcueta for sure

Zabaleta the next best thing. Nasty baps last week look promising but I don't see that happening too often and the attacking potential from Zaba is there to see.

Keep him. He's going to smash it soon. Looking at your team I think get rid of Noble or O'Brien. Aside from that, looks like a good team. Like the RVP/Aguero/Lambert frontline (could get Sturridge in a couple of weeks but monitor how Southampton do with their new manager).

Ready to take a hit to get rid of Santi and Lambert. Which alternative seems to be the best? 0,7m in bank.

    a) Michu & Defoe bank: 0m

    b) Dempsey & Dzeko(if he starts) bank: 0m

    c) Silva & Fletcher bank: 0,1m

    d) Dempsey & Fletcher bank: 0,5m

    e) Other?

    Current squad:

    Szczesny – Bunn

    Davies – Zaba – Shaw – Wilson – Demel

    Walcott – Mata – Fellaini – Santi – Puncheon

    Suarez – RVP – Lambert

Don't know what to do with the team currently.
    GK : Begovic, Jussi
Def : Cameron, Martin R, O'brien, Demel, Shorey
Mid : Mata, Marveux, Michu,Walcott, Bale
    Fwd: RVP, Suarez, Berba

Is it worth to do a one week punt for Fellaini before WC next GW. He will replace Bale for now.
I will be choosing Bale out, because of their respective price rise/fall.

got 1 FT. any other suggestion will be considered. ta 😀

Surprised their isn't more interest in Dzecko. Could be a cheap high reward forward and if the punt doesn't work its easy to shift him to Sturidge (currently poor fixtures), Fletcher of Lukaku/Benteke
