Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Why do some people dislike DGW's? They're probably the most profitable and easiest way to jump significantly in the ranks. The more the better i say.

On a personal level, I dislike them, firstly because I never do well out of them. No real reason for it, but that's always been true.

I know the advantages from a game point of view, so here are the disadvantages as I see it.

      1) They can cause wild swings of fortune
      2) They turn your head, causing you to ignore better single game alternatives.
      3) Teams more likely to converge to a similar template

If ever there was a weekend for a lower or non league side to play a Premier League team then this was it.

Full schedule of Prem games on Tuesday and Wednesday so teams resting their players and teams more interested in staying in the Premier League or qualifying for European football than winning an FA Cup tie.

People go on about the magic of the cup but the truth is that these days it tends to boil down to one team playing several levels below their norm against another team playing several levels above theirs.

The big clubs only care about this competition from the semi finals on. And unless they get drawn together its a good bet that both Manchester clubs will be in the semis.

Personally, if I was a betting man I'd go tonight and put a wedge on Man Utd doing the double now.

Bigger teams don't give a sh*t about it at this stage. Its an unnecessary distraction.

Got bigger fish to fry. Hard to get up for Oldham when you're still hopeful of a European place and you got to play Arsenal and Man City in the next 7 days.

Five clean sheets in a row in all competitions for Manchester City now. I know Kompany's injured but I'm a great believer that a cracking defence starts in the middle of the park so it's Nastasic & Zabaleta into my team over the next couple of weeks.

      Think bout it though.

They all have 2 prem games in the space of 4 days next week. It was obvious that most of the premier League teams were going to put out the reserves.

However, as Redknapp and now Rodgers have both come out and said, Premier League reserves should still be able to beat lower league players.

Except that most Prem reserves earn more money in a week than lower league players earn in a year (that's the ones that are lucky enough to get paid) and that's where the lack of motivation and commitment comes into play.

I know it’s not exactly a great source, but Defoe missed out with a hip injury. AVB is playing it down saying he’s likely to be back for Norwich midweek but somehow i don’t think so. Defoe was only talking about Leeds last night and looking forward to it, suggesting he aggravated it today. I’m no physio, but I don’t see a hip injury recovered in 3 days if it kept him off the team sheet today.

I reckon Dempsey up front for the next game at least, but that’s just my opinion

@Giggs: As long as Defoe is out for next couple of games and Togo reaching knockout round in AFCON, I think I'll get Dempsey in

Yeah I can keep him even if they return as well.
My original plan was to keep Bale for only 4 games or so anyway
so unless there's a turn of form I won't probably will have to get him in.

So Dempsey over Bale for short term punt. ✓

    Anyone else agrees with this?

          Begovic – Bunn
          Zabaleta – Rafael – Bertrand – Cuellar – Davies
          Gerrard – Lampard – Dempsey – Walcott – Guthrie
Aguero – Van Persie – Sturridge
