The Stock Check – Wednesday

After tepid returns from Tuesdays’ action, tonight saw the cast of heavy-hitters deliver at Leighton Baines, Juan Mata, Theo Walcott, Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and, of course, Jordan Henderson, all hauled in the points to round the Gameweek off with a bang. Here’s the Stock Check from Wednesday’s events…

On the Up

Wayne Rooney
His first league start since Gameweek 18 found Rooney blossom to fetch a fifth double figure haul of the season with a brace against the Saints. Incredibly, Rooney has now scored seven goals in his last five league starts for United – an output that more than keeps pace with Robin Van Persie. The old debate is opened up once again.

Leighton Baines
It was coming. Baines has been simmering all season, threatening a bumper return with superb creativity and set-piece threat thrown in. This four-match run always looked favourable for Baines and, after harvesting back-to-back clean sheets, the former Wigan man cleaned up against the Baggies with a brilliantly taken opener, followed by a spot-kick conversion.

Juan Mata
The Spaniard’s consistent run of scoring continued with a double point haul at the Madjeski – Mata has now returned a goal or assist in eight of the last ten league games. Despite David Silva’s form and Gareth Bale’s goal tonight, the case for Mata as your heavy-hitter midfielder looks cast-iron. Demba Ba’s continued rotation up front only bolsters his stock, with Mata clearly the most potent and secure Chelsea attacking option on offer right now.

Luis Suarez
Deployed out on the left-flank, the Uruguayan nonetheless wandered in-field to add menace to the Liverpool attack and struck the opening goal with just two minutes on the clock – his 17th strike of the season. Strangely, however, Suarez owners will have mixed feelings from tonight’s display. While he was always involved, clearly he has conceded the central role to Daniel Sturridge who looks destined to represent strong value from this point on.

Jordan Henderson
Could the much-maligned former Sunderland man emerge as an unlikely Fantasy prospect? Henderson followed up a double figure haul against Norwich with another one at the Emirates, assisting the Suarez goal before scoring a second-half solo effort. Having started four of the last five in the league, Henderson, at just 5.3, is already looking a likely punt for Liverpool’s forthcoming double Gameweek and is a viable alternative to Raheem Sterling.

Theo Walcott
The Gunners man is another Fantasy midfielder showing incredible consistency – a superb strike to level matters at the Emirates took him to 11 for the season and means that he’s scored in three consecutive matches. Indeed, he’s only failed to return in one of his last eight league matches. Like Mata, he’s picking himself in our midfield right now.

Olivier Giroud
Another goal, another assist – the Frenchman has unquestionably settled at the Emirates and his form is beginning to turn heads. Why Lukas Podolski turned it on for his owners in the double Gamweek, Giroud is now looking the Gunners weapon of choice up front and his blossoming understanding with Theo Walcott is looking hugely profitable.

Dimitar Berbatov
An eighth goal of the season kept the Bulgarian ticking, taking him to three goals in the last six – perhaps enough to appease his faithful Fantasy owners. Berbatov has been a victim of Fulham’s woeful recent form and, if Martin Jol’s side can take confidence from tonight’s win, Berbatov could start to rebuild his reputation as a strong mid-price option up top. However, subbed on 75 minutes – there is talk of an injury sustained in tonight’s encounter.

Kevin Nolan
A first goal in eleven league starts for Nolan is unlikely to start any form of bandwagon rolling but, with Andy Carroll set to return to the starting lineup, Nolan could yet be a factor in our Fantasy seasons having looked so strong in the opening matches.

Gareth Bale
The Welshman delivered at last, after going six starts with just one set of returns, albeit the Villa Park hat-trick, Bale rewarded the faith of his owners with the equaliser at Carrow Road. With Mata and Walcott remaining so strong and with David Silva showing great promise in recent matches, Bale consistency has tested the patience and he arguably still trails that trio in the heavy-hitter midfield rankings as it stands.

Adam Le Fondre
Incredibly, the impish striker came of the bench to deliver a brace for the second consecutive match and ruin Rafa’s evening. At 4.7 , Le Fondre would make a superb budget option if only he could offer security of starts – arguably, however, with ten goals this term, regular starts aren’t required to warrant investment.

Going Down

Demba Ba
Having sat out the FA Cup tie on Sunday, the Senegal striker look primed for a start at Reading but was left on the bench as Rafa Benitez kept faith with Fernando Torres as his striker. Ba will surely earn a start at his former club Newcastle at the weekend: that might be too late for his Fantasy owners who will be fidgeting at the prospect of the continued doubt each time a Chelsea teamsheet is due.

Rafael
Having missed three league outings in December through injury, the Brazilian was handed a rest for the visit of Southampton having started the last four matches in all competitions. With Chris Smalling and Phil Jones an option, we could anticipate rotation at right-back and with Champions League football beckoning next month, this may not be the last time that Rafael’s Fantasy owners are left frustrated.

Marouane Fellaini
Back in an attacking role having been dropped deeper at Bolton at the weekend, the Belgian still failed to get in on the act at Goodison. Fellaini has now returned just a single assist in his last six league matches. A home clash with the obliging Villa defence up next, may just lend him a stay of execution for those pondering options.

Kieran Gibbs
The young left-back’s propensity to suffer injury reared its head again as Gibbs was forced off with a hamstring problem on 36 minutes. With the Gunners conceding tonight, they are without a clean sheet in the last six league outings – Gibbs’ owners will perhaps use this latest potential setback to invest elsewhere.

Raheem Sterling
Left on the bench again, the young winger has seemingly lost his start to Stewart Downing and, with Luis Suarez now occupying the left-flank role, he appears to be locked in a one-on-one battle for a starting berth on the right. Sterling has suffered heavy transfers out for the last seven Gameweeks and that trend could continue, even with the double Gameweek beckoning. His chances of playing both those matches look slim.

Robin Van Persie
The Dutchman had been so consistent and yet chose a night where Rooney delivered to return a rare blank – his first since Gameweek 13. With thousands handing him the armband, there will be mass disappointment but surely faith will be kept in a player who has been so reliable, so often.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Morning guys. How's this for a WC team?

    Mignolet Fed
    Baines Zab Pearce Davies Wilson/Clyne?
    Mata Michu Fellaini Walcott Puncheon/Kebe/McAnuff?
    RVP Suarez Sturridge

Suarez Sturr for DGW, then I can do Baines -> GJ next and Suarez -> Aguero after DGW. Probably involves a hit for the DGW though to get rid of another Liverpool. Not in a rush to get Stoke cover, so Wilson make sense to me. He should be ready by GW27 at least (?) Alternative is Clyne.

Thanks. Don't like making eleborate plans, but DGW madness and all that. I feel like it's more flexible if I "rely" on taking a hit though. The alternative is having GJ in my team from the start over Baines, but if I do it like this I can choose Liverpool coverage next week. GJ? Gerrard? Maybe it makes to go with Suarez + Sturr. Point is I can make that decision next week like this.

analyser-types out there, i seem to be struggling with the logic here, help me out a bit 😉

does it make the most sense to have 4 dgw players for week 26, transfer one out for week 27, and utilize 3 subs?

any more than 4 dgw players and you are just obtaining points "in advance", correct? because you suffer the following gameweek, unless you pay -4 penalties (and there doesn't seem to be any logic in that)

Well if you manage to get more than 4 without a hit than it is ok as you probably get at least 4 pts in the double anyway. Spending -4 or up to -8 in total to build up or glear up a double is fine.

but with the blank *immediately* after the DGW, it means that if you spend to bring them in, you also have to spend to clear them out

lets say you already have 4 dgw players, and you decide to -4 to swap, say bale for gerrard.

the next week, you use the FT to swap one dgw-er out, leaving you with only 10 men. unless you swap gerrard back for bale with another -4. so that move cost you -8, and who's to say bale wouldn't have performed during the dgw.

Instead, had you stuck with 4 DGW players, you miss out the gerrard bonanza, save 8 points, get whatever Bale scores.

The latter is the "logical" thing to do, correct?

          Basically it' like this.
Assume 5th DGW player is player A,
player you're taking out for a hit to take player A in is player B,
and player C is the guy replacing player A for hit in the blank GW.

          Player A in DGW 26 + Player C in GW 27 > Player B in GW 26 and 27 + 8

          If yes, proceed.
          If no, keep player B.

got it. i assume playing with ten men (not replacing player A) during GW 27 is unacceptable?

using bale and gerrard, with bale being both B and C, it's unlikely that gerrard can cover the -8

For example, I'm taking in Johnson (A) for a hit replacing Zabaleta (B)
The week after I'll get Azpili (C) to replace Johnson, for a hit.

My guess is Johnson will score 10 in DGW, Zabaleta to score 6 and 2 in those 2 weeks and Azpili get 2 in the week after.

          10 + 2 < 6 + 2 + 8

Zaba wins. I'm not taking Johnson in for the DGW.

Normally the hits for the double are fine, but if you're getting a player in and straight out both for hits, that player has cost you -8. Most players won't cover that spread even with a double

      Logically, yes
But as long as you strongly believe the 5th DGW player outscore the other guy by 4 points than it should be all good.

My case is keep Zaba or get Johnson and then swap back to Zaba next for a hit.

there is more sense to pay a -4 penalty in this case than in a normal GW, but it's still a risk
say you consider sturridge as your fifth player
      then you have:
      GW27 sturridge with 2 games
GW 28 someone else and -4 points
      alternatively, you have
GW27 someone else with 1 game
      GW 28 someone else
so, sturridge has to score 4 points more than this 'someone' in GW27 for the following hit to pay off

What your saying makes a lot of sense. Like you say, it's kind of like your getting the points in advance if you have a 5th player and don't plan to shift them for the blank, as it would mean fielding 10. Taking a hit to get rid of the 5th DGWer would only be worth it if the DGWer and the player you replace them with both do very well (not guaranteed!).

The exception is if you are on a WC. Then you can afford 5 DGWers, save the transfer next week and use them both to shift 2 of your 5 players with a blank and therefore be able to field 11 players.

thanks. koflok cleared it up with the formula above, as well.

what if we are talking about bringing in a 4th DGWer? how do the fundamentals change?

is the thought process split into 2 parts? with part A being whether or not to pay the -4 for the DGWer,

and then part B being the decision whether to bench the 4th DGWer and let your sub play, or swap him out for a -4 hit

GW27: – Gerrard back to Bale or to Walcott/Silva. Hopefully Gibbs fit.

Will Giroud be affected by Champs?

Naah, dont bother with Bertrand, if Hazard does not get any more games on his ban than he only has 1 more possible game to start in.

Nope, depends on price ofc. But if he plays in the middle with Suarez and sturridge om front he could very much explode. Hope he plays against city

    WC team. Good?

    Mignolet Tremmel
    GJ Zab Davies Clyne O'Brien
    Walcott Bale Michu Fellani Puncheon
    Rvp Suarez Sturridge.

De Guzman for Michu?????? Cash would be used to upgrade Sturridge in gw 27. Save next week.

    Thanks 😀

Red arrow... Should I transfer Gibbs out now for J Enrique or wait until next weekend and potentially lose some £ on Gibbs? (Can field a decent defense for this GW I think, probably would be benching JE against City even)

Davies and a Reading defender seem very popular at the moment because of the GW27 blank. What's an obvious choice for a 3rd cheap defender, given that I have Mignolet in goal. Wilson? Clyne? QPR?
