Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Liverpool

Back-to-back home clashes against West Brom and Swansea in the upcoming Gameweek have already earned Liverpool’s Fantasy assets significant investment. As mentioned in last night’s Digest, though, the following week’s blank also plays a part in our transfer policies prior to this Saturday’s deadline – load up on too many Liverpool and Swansea players and you’re left with a depleted squad for Gameweek 27, potentially facing points hits in order to field a starting XI. While Fantasy managers contemplate their tactics, we run the rule over the Reds:

The Prospects

Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the double Gameweek with the best home defensive record in the Premier League. Having conceded six goals in their first three games at Anfield, with City, Arsenal and United all notching twice, Liverpool have subsequently shipped just four goals in the following nine, with seven clean sheets accrued along the way. Their last six home games have harvested three or more goals on four occasions for the hosts – offering plenty potential at both ends of the pitch, then.

The Baggies arrive on Merseyside next Monday evening in dire away form – Steve Clarke’s side have lost five of their last six on the road and conceded two or more in all of those defeats. They have failed to score twice in that run, away to Arsenal and United and have notched once at Swansea and Everton – of the two fixtures, this certainly looks the most appetising in terms of goals for Liverpool.

Swansea look a tougher nut to crack. With just 10 goals conceded in 13 games on their travels, Michael Laudrup’s side are joint-top along with City for best away defence. The Swans have shipped just three goals in their last six away matches, producing three clean sheets, but have scored in only one of those six fixtures – suggesting that, while they may limit Liverpool’s attacking potential, they may struggle to break down the Reds’ rearguard.

The Likely Lads

Pepe Reina appears on the radar mainly due to the blank Gameweek 27. With the Spaniard on board, you could have five players for the double, subbing one out with your free transfer to leave the remaining four on the bench for Gameweek 27 – given there are doubts over Michel Vorm’s fitness for Swansea, Reina seems the safest keeper option, thus utilising all of your squad over the upcoming two Gameweeks.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique offer the best potential of points at both ends of the pitch. The full-backs have produced a goal and four assists apiece thus far, with Enrique slightly edging it by six bonus points to five. Having recently returned from a hamstring injury, Enrique made his first start since Gameweek 20 at City last weekend and although he was subbed off on 74 minutes, this was purely down to stamina issues as he continues to build up his match fitness. Having returned 4.2 points per game to Johnson’s 3.9 (albeit with a couple of appearances up front) Enrique’s kinder Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of 5.7 to 6.4 could sway many.

After a couple of lacklustre campaigns, Steven Gerrard has returned to Fantasy form of old with a series of outstanding displays taking him to second in the FPL midfield standings. The Reds’ skipper has now scored or assisted in 10 of the last 12 Gameweeks; a clear sign of his consistency heading into the double. Gerrard has returned three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his last four home matches and with spot-kick duties, in addition to a share of set-pieces and corners, an ownership of 10% is climbing steadily now.

Second top scoring FPL forward, Luis Suarez has also impressed in recent Anfield matches. The Uruguayan has produced four goals, an assist and eight bonus points over his last three home fixtures and is the most popular Liverpool player by some margin, with over 34% Fantasy managers already snapping him up. While Gerrard offers a viable armband alternative, a big Gameweek for Suarez could prove problematic for those who choose to overlook him, given his superior ownership. Despite a recent change in role, Suarez still seems to be delivering – he has scored in two of his three starts alongside Daniel Sturridge, either from the left in a 4-3-3 or in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1.

The January move from Chelsea has had an immediate impact on Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy potential. He’s scored or assisted in all four of his league appearances already, with goals against United and City highlighting his ability to deliver regardless of fixture. Sturridge’s appeal is also boosted by the fact he is cup-tied for Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League games against Zenit St Petersburg – the first leg, in Russia, comes three days after the West Brom game and three days before the Swansea fixture. Coming in at 7.6 in FPL to Suarez’s 10.7, he’s far more budget friendly, providing he shrugs off a thigh problem that has forced him out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil.

Cheeky Punt

The last few matches have seen Jordan Henderson stake a claim for inclusion after a series of strong displays. The former Sunderland man has started five of the last six and has chipped in with a couple of goals, a pair of assists, four bonus points and two sets of double figures – for 5.3 in FPL, he’s proven decent value for money of late.

Stewart Downing has seemingly cemented a regular role under Rodgers over the past few months. While the likes of Raheem Sterling drift slightly out the picture, Downing has now started each of the last 10 and has produced attacking points in two of his last three home fixtures. Like Henderson, a modest price tag of 5.7 may appeal to those struggling to free up cash for big-hitters.

He can ossibly get first team.. but the way he's played I can't see him ending it on a personal high. Getting a Premier League winners medal might soften the blow for him.. but not for anybody who would part with Walcott, Bale or Mata to get him I'm afraid.

Is a GW 27 team of
    Bunn (Jaask)
    Harte, Debuchy, Demel
    Bale, Walcott, Mata, J.Cole
    RVP, Lambert, Aguero

..Worth having Davies, Gerrard, Michu, Sturridge and Johnson for the DGW ?
4 point hit to get GW 27 team..

If you don't already have Johnson, get Reina for Jaask instead. Then you can have 4 on the bench the following week and think about transfering Demel too because he is unlikely to play now

This is my team at the moment…Got 2FTs to field XI in GW27…

    Begovic

    Enrique* – Davies* – Demel

    Bale – Mata – Michu* – Walcott

    RVP – Suarez* (C) – Sturridge* (VC)

Subs: Federici – Puncheon – Jones – Clyne

    Is this a good plan?

    For GW27: Enrique + Michu + Suarez -> Zabaleta + Fellaini + Aguero (-4)

RVP wasn't really all that rubbish.. he just didn't get a goal or an assist.
Took a few decent shots but wasn't too involved for a player of his calibre. But to say he was rubbish is silly.. Nani recorded no shots on target, no accurate crosses and a 57% pass completion rate v Fulham.

I doubt it, very frustrating performance from him when it mattered most. Did all the hard work but the final ball let him down on many occasions. I believe he's destined to leave although Fergie said that every club needs a Nani in their team but the final straw was going behind the backs of United for a transfer to that Russian club, its all down to money once again!

Given that Suarez is regarded in some quarters as quite a greedy player I found the stat that he has created more chances for teammates for open play than any other player this season quite interesting and is more good news for Sturridge owners. (Stat courtesy of Opta)

Really miss last season's Adebayor. I captained him the GW he got 2 goals and 3 assists, which propelled me up the rankings to eventually finish #2 GW4 😀
With Defoe not firing lately, he could lead the line again. Big differential Anyone else considering?

the biggest haul this dgw will come from michu and everybody is so busy getting liverpool players for hits. keep calm and just get michu ,suarez and GJ and you are set for a 80 points+ gw for sure. trust me avoid those hits.

true. He's hardly on fire though, is he? Of course, he could suddenly hit form again, anyone could. But there isn't a great deal of evidence to think he will in this particular gameweek.

it's perfectly fine to load up and get rid if it doesn't cost you points. but all i am saying is that all the hits taken for pool players are not worth it coz swans have tightened up and how many goals do you expect pool to score vs WBA...not more than 2 is my guess.

    Repost.

I have Ivanovic and Baines since start.
Is it wise to get one of them out for the rest of the season?
I have 2 FTs and one transfer is Fella -> Michu. Only with geting one of them out I can afford Liverpool defender. Have Davies.
    Other options could be
    marveaux -> 4.9 or
Demel/Clyne -> 4.6 and I don’t really want to do some of that as I wont play player i’d bring.
    Any help?

The teams that could possibly have a blank gw29 due to cup fixtures are Arsenal, Everton, Man City, United or Reading, Chelsea, Wigan.

All teams are likely to win apart from Reading.

    This means that the only fixtures going ahead in gw29 could be;

    Newcastle v Stoke
    Norwich v Southampton
    QPR v Sunderland
    Reading v Villa
    WBA v Swansea
    Liverpool v Tottenham

    Get stocked up!

    0.7m in the bank.
Im waiting until after the Internationals to get Gerrard in. Probably for Bale, but maybe Mata. I have a feeling Bale is going to go nuts.

    Mignolet
    Zabaletta – Cameron – DAVIES
    Bale – Mata – Michu – Fellaini
    Rvp – STURRIDGE – Giroud

    Bench – – Bunn – Demel – Mariappa – Puncheon

Absolutely not sir, Just that it could be a high scoring game & am hoping Bale will definitely be on the score sheet. Newcastle has definitely improved, But, ditching out Bale with the likes of Defoe/Adebayor not in the team doesn't seem like a good move, as Spurs will be relying on Bale

It seems harsh on Silva because he is a talent, but Yaya absolutely bosses City's midfield, and come the end of the season they will push for the title, with him being in the driving seat. Same reason im thinking Gerrard, everything Liverpool do is through him.

Have both and I'm seriously thinking about it. My argument against it is that Suarez is almost as likely to score a goal as Sturridge, even if he plays the whole match out wide. I also think Suarez is more likely to get assists and bonus points.

According to the liverpool forums they all want to do well ineurope as it the only realistic chance of a trophy this season . Some of the first teamers will have to play.
We have seen time and again how poorly teams play after these europa agventures , Michu to outscore Gerrard

      play Bego ahead of Bunn?
I'm playing Tremmel ahead of Bego and hoping he plays both with few saves and maybe 1 CS

fair enough, but don't want to double up on Stoke defence. Cameron is my makeweight to getting Gerrard and Sturridge in. Have .5 left over so going to wait until after the internationals to ensure no injuries. Then I would really look silly.

cant help it.. Sturridge and Enrique for Fletcher and Baines is fixed for me.. The 4 pointer would be for Aguero to Suarez or Mignolet to Reina.. Reina lets me field 11 next week(due to my Bertrand punt) while Suarez would be another 4 pointer to take out next week..

But Reina utilizes a lot of cash in the GK dept. You'd want him out at some point. Not worth a hit imo.

Federici got good fixtures GW 27 and 29 so i'd prob bench Reina/Migs then.. that means i'd get Migs only for GW 26(ARS) GW 28 and GW 30.. i can live with that.. Then wild card for Reina out

Mignolet will concede vs Arsenal.. that's 1 or 2 points for him.. Reina is already sitting on 4 points + save points and maybe a CS.. plus got my WC ready to get rid of him when required in a couple weeks.. He lets me field 11 too in GW 27

If he is rested v Liverpool, he will be going 2 weeks without playing before the Cup Final.

If it was a midweek game, I'd say definitely, but since it's a week beforehand, match sharpness comes into play.

Is there not a week before that? I guess to avoid injury/suspension but I don't see it personally.
