The Stock Check – Sunday

Two quick-fire goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon catch the Gunners defence flat-footed and, with the Spurs back four holding firm, North London superiority is very much with Andre Villas-Boas’ side tonight. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s events…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
It’s seven league goals in his last five league matches as Bale continued his incredible form and saw him repay those who placed the armband with the Welshman. There’s little to be said on Bale that hasn’t been said already – his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag has risen 0.6 in the space of two Gameweeks and there’s every reason to expect that to go on ascending as more Fantasy managers concede defeat and acquire his services.

Michael Dawson
Spurs have now gone 12 league outings unbeaten and, in that spell, they’ve kept five clean sheets and conceded more than one goal just once (at West Ham on Monday). The installation of Dawson in central defence has been a major factor – he’s started ten of the last eleven and was outstanding once again in a second half rearguard effort. At just 4.6 in the FPL, Dawson may not have appealing fixtures but, given Tottenham’s current form, he may still continue to deliver value.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelander scored his first league goal for Spurs at Upton Park on Monday and that was enough to see him start ahead of Lewis Holtby this afternoon. Sigurdsson again returned, slotting a smart pass through for Bale’s opener – his fifth assist of the season. It remains to be seen if he can hold his starting role, particularly once Clint Dempsey regains fitness. With Bale monopolising our attention, however, Sigurdsson seems unlikely to attract too much Fantasy interest.

Aaron Lennon
Lennon is another playing in the shadow of Gareth Bale. Today’s goal was his fourth of what has been a consistent season for the fleet-footed winger. At 7.2, ordinarily, Lennon may earn some Fantasy interest but with Bale’s form so relentless, he remains little more than a fanciful differential.

Going Down

The Arsenal Defence
While Tottenham’s rearguard has delivered five shut-outs in twelve and shown some determined consistency, Arsenal’s defence continues to look brittle and was exploited with ease by two through-balls today. It’s just two clean sheets in the last ten for Arsene Wenger’s back four – they came against Stoke and Sunderland – two teams amongst the most impotent in the league. Those holding Arsenal defensive assets will surely be looking to trade in for the Gameweek 29 blank and will consider the merits of acquiring them back, even with the confirmed double Gameweek 33 beckoning.

Olivier Giroud
It’s four league outings without a goal now for the Frenchman who, at one stage looked to have settled in Wenger’s lineup but now looks out of form and vulnerable once again. Giroud’s stint at centre-forward has led to Theo Walcott shifting to the flank and that has led to his returns dropping – Walcott has also failed to score in the last four Gameweeks, keeping his tally ticking with three assists. We could well see changes to Wenger’s tactics following the Gameweek 29 break.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What makes a comparison of a black player to a monkey an outrageous case of racism and a comparison of a white player to a monkey a funny joke?

Why should the same action, i.e. a thrown banana and a comparison to a monkey, be laughed at in one case and be severely punished in the other one?

Isn't different treatment of the same action depending on the race of its object racist itself?

Well I wouldn't necessarily laugh at Bale having a banana thrown at him cos it is pretty rude. But it isn't the same as a black person having one thrown. It is rudeness vs racism because white people who look like monkeys didn't face years of slavery and other attrocities

The whole monkey thing as a racist point has little to do with slavery and more to do with the insinuation that black people are less evolved than white people (by sharing a closer resemblance to our evolutionary ancestors).

that would mean that comparing anyone to a monkey would mean the insinuation that they are less evolved than others (by sharing a closer resemblance to our evolutionary ancestors), so it's pretty much the same then for both white and black players

I agree that throwing a banana and comparing a white player to a monkey is not cool. I just don't get it. But it's more accepted because white people don't have a history of persecution on the basis of being white, and don't still face discrimination today on the basis of being white.

kind of a dodgy area this but i'll give it a go. an idiot might compare a black player to a monkey, on the basis that said player is black, as in it makes a reference to his race. whereas a white player, in this case bale, just looks a bit like a monkey, it's just the way he is, not a wider reference to his race.

it's because it's whtie people throwing the banana. therefore it's more acceptable in bale's case than a banana threw to a black man by white people. no brainer. racism hurts when majority picks on minority. you shouldn't need to wonder these things

Throwing a banana at a black player means: you haven't developed very much from the monkey stage have you? This is untrue, offensive and not funny at all.

Throwing a banana at Bale just means: you look like a monkey. This is slightly offensive, but sorta funny cause it's true.

Also, a monkey would understand this without having to ask about it, while it seems to elude so many of our human kind. Also funny cause it's true 😉

Got 9 players for next week and planning 2 transfers in. £4.5m in the bank and will be replacing Marveaux & Anichebe.

My best idea so far is N'Zog & Benteke but feel like it might be putting too many eggs in Villa basket.

Any other ideas? Taarabt being benched rules him out. Not convinced Sissoko is anything other than a flash in the pan, having looked at his prior career stats.

    Hey guys,

Can anyone help? Getting screwed next week, as are many I'm sure, but wondering who to get rid of and who to bring on board. Team below gives me 3 blanks next week.

    Migs

    Azpil Harte B Davies
    Mata Walcott Bale Sissoko Puncheon
    Lambert Suarez

    (Fed RVP J Evans Zab)

So looking to get rid of Mata for Michu but can't decide if it's a good idea to ship someone else too. Also thinking N'Zogbia is a risk but could return some nice differentials if he goes on a streak like the old days. Any thoughts??

    Many thanks!

Currently have a 4-3-0 formation for next week with two FT. Assuming the blanks stay the same I'm thinking Aguero and Pog to Cisse and Lukaku leaving me with:

    Bunn
    GJ, Davies, Turner, Harte
    Michu, Bale, Sissoko
    Cisse, Lukaku

    Begovic
    Blanks: RVP, Walcott, Mata, Evans

Danny Blanchflower once said: “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It’s nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It is about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.”

Isn't that the best football-related quote of all time? For a romantic like me, it is.

I agree. However pure and beautiful, the game of football is still about winning. If you can do both, then great. If not, then win. Obviously i`d want to watch the team matching what you just quoted, but.

        Yes, perhaps.

But a lot of the great modern teams also play pretty good football, and that is nice. In fact I think the teams winning the big leagues this season are all teams founded on an attacking philosophy and good football.
