Scout Report – Jordi Amat

Swansea City dipped into the summer transfer market for the second time earlier this week with the capture of centre-half Jordi Amat from Espanyol. The 21-year-old signs up at the Liberty on a four-year deal for a fee in the region of £2.5m and joins compatriot Jose Canas at the club, as Michael Laudrup continues to raid the Spanish top-flight following the success of Michu, Chico and Jonathan de Guzman last time around.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Amat – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers in order to sign up at the Liberty – cited the club’s possession-based playing style as key to his decision:

“I watched Swansea last season – what the club achieved was incredible. To finish in the top half of the Premier League and win a trophy too is a massive achievement. In Spain, Swansea are very famous now. They talk a lot about the club and how they have become a successful team in the Premier League with an attractive style of play. So to be a part of the team is a big moment for me. The club has a great set-up – the stadium is lovely and I know it’s full every game, and I can’t wait to run out in front of the supporters for the first time.”

The History

A product of the Espanyol youth system, Amat’s career began with the club’s B team in the Spanish third division back in 2009-10. After making 17 appearances he was fast-tracked to the first-team towards the end of the season and featured six times. The following campaign saw the centre-half nail down a regular role, turning out on 26 occasions, but he fell out of favour in 2011/12 and featured in just nine league games.

Farmed out on loan to Michu’s old club Rayo Vallecano last year, Amat scored once in 27 La Liga matches – footage of his 50-yard wonder strike is doing the rounds – and helping his side to an eighth place finish. The centre-half has turned out for his country at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 and was part of the Spain side that finished third at the Under 17 World Cup in 2009 along with the likes of United’s David De Gea.

The Prospects

The Swans Capital One Cup success and subsequent Europa League duties means Laudrup requires a greater depth to his squad next time round. With a more demanding schedule to contend with, it remains to be seen whether Amat has been purchased as a back-up to Chico and Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four, with the possibility of game time only arriving through rest and rotation – although the latter missed just one league game all season, Chico was sidelined for 12 league matches through injury, with Laudrup forced to hand Garry Monk 10 starts as a result.

There’s no doubt that Williams’ future will play a major part in Amat’s prospects for the season ahead. With Liverpool and Arsenal continuing to be linked with a move for his services, the former’s possible departure would be a huge boost for the new boy’s prospects, though it would be a big call from Laudrup to let Williams go without further adding to his backline, given Amat’s relative youth and Chico’s propensity for picking up injury.

In spite of the silverware and ninth place finish in Laudrup’s debut season at the helm, Swansea failed to replicate the defensive consistency produced under Brendan Rodgers in 2011/12. Although they conceded the same number of goals overall (51), the clean sheets dropped from 14 down to nine and with their opponents scoring more than once in eight of the last 10 Gameweeks, the Welsh outfit tailed off significantly after their top-flight safety was secured somewhat earlier than anticipated.

Given their defensive record, Swansea’s main defensive assets are likely to be priced around the 5.0 mark once again in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Laudrup’s occasional use of Angel Rangel on the right of midfield is likely to ensure the Spaniard remains the most appealing defensive option and although there’s hope that Neil Taylor will come in at 4.5 after missing most of the season through injury, there’s every chance Laudrup could rotate him and Ben Davies at left-back, thus negating both their Fantasy potential. With Michel Vorm set to drop from last year’s 5.5, there are other more appealing options that Amat at the Liberty right now – an initial price of 4.5, followed by a move away for Williams, seems to be his only way of turning our heads.

Certainly, the opening few fixtures give us time to assess the situation from afar. With Laudrup’s side set to face United, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the first six Gameweeks, few will fancy their chances of defensive returns, with only trips to West Brom and Palace offering any appeal. From Gameweek 8 onwards, though, the schedule brightens considerably and many will be looking to invest in the Welsh outfit ahead of a run of five home games (SUN, WHM STO, NEW, HUL) and a trip to Cardiff in the following eight – by then, Amat’s prospects and Laudrup’s possible rotation intentions will hopefully be a little clearer and allow us to make our trades with a greater degree of certainty.

An extra 10-20m gained if they had played on could have led to a better position for a drop goal and a more kickable penalty.

Looking at the prospects of Liverpool and/or Spurs breaking into the top 4.

    Who is most at risk?

How much needs to be spent each summer to avoid this?

Will Wenger spend his 70m war chest? and on who?

How much will the Chelsea, Man City & Utd spend and will it be enough to guarantee success?

Surely with so many management changes its a little more complex than that.

That said the status quo is certainly Liverpool, Everton and Spurs challenge Arsenal for a top 4 spot whilst the top 3 challenge each other for honours.

I reckon top 4 will stay the same. The only team at risk is Arsenal if they don't strengthen their squad. A couple of key injuries and they will struggle with the current squad + Higuain

I think Liverpool are closer than people realise, the only problem is how to replace Gerrard moving forward.

They have come a long way in a single year!

RVP determined the title last year, I think 50-100 million is what it'll take to stand still this year. If you play modern football and attract the best young talent as a result (Swansea, Liverpool, Arsenal Everton?) then the future is bright surely?

If Spurs keep Bale and strengthen their squad they are much more likely to break into the top 4 than L'pool are. If Suarez leaves then L'pool will slip further down the table IMO.

I think Wenger will splash the cash this summer, Higuain already in the bag? and further additions to come.

Chelsea will be more successful under Jose with out spending any money, but I think they will spend anyway and bring in 2 or 3 quality players.

If United land any of their big transfer targets (Thiago, Ronaldo, Bale) then the team will be stronger than last season and will challenge on all fronts.

Bale will only become a target if Ronaldo commits to Real. Ether way, if we land Thiago then we'll be 100% stronger in midfield.

              Yeah definitely.

And going from little to no exercise then lifting can be dangerous. Using muscles you are not used to using in that context can lead to injury which has serious implications. A novice can get enough muscle recruitment doing other forms of exercise without placing too much demand on their body.

It depends on the intensity and duration of the exercise. Swimming is beneficial if you are on the heavier side as running places alot of stress on your joints while swimming can also increase flexibility and water provides resistance throughout your workout.

The swimming stroke will impact on the intensity of your exercise also. 30 minutes breaststroke and 30 minutes butterfly are very different with regards to the physical demands. You could think you are doing more because you are in the pool but not put in as much effort as you might on a run. And running you can incorporate interval training (sprinting with short rest periods) which is really good for fat burning.

And most important of all do the exercise that you enjoy the most. You are much more likely to adhere to a fitness regime if you enjoy the activity you are doing. If you don't enjoy swimming you are much less likely to put the time and effort in.

A team that doesn't train doesn't sound like much of a team.

If you want to improve your fitness to meet the demands of your sport you need to improve you CV endurance for a start. Distance running with intervals with improve your fitness over long and short periods which you need during a match.

You want to put in some good mileage to build up a good base of fitness but also taking the time to do short sharp sprints with low rest periods inbetween. If you ran at the same steady pace you won't increase your HR enough and work the muscle efficiently. You need to increase the distance you run over time and lower the recovery time between sprints so track your progress so you are not repeating the same exercise every time.

The body adapts to exercise quickly so you need to keep pushing it beyond your current level to improve.

And find some 5 a side games to play to improve your fitness over short distances and while improving your touch and awareness.

Thanks for that. Yes we are just a casual team and I go to trainings but few others if any turn up. We started off playing indoor and I have done a lot of that with them but as the season is coming to an end enthusiasm has waned.

I think I will give this interval thing a go. I often just go at a steady pace but I need to push myself more to get more out of it.

Do you live in an area with alot of hills? Increments are great for working on CV endurance, increased intensity and muscular endurance.

I don't like just running on flat ground. Find varying increments to run on and you can use them to your advantage. Running at your maximum to the top, jog back for your recovery sprint back up and repeat 2-4 times. Shuttle runs between different points. There is loads you can do just don't be afraid to try different things. Running at a steady state on flat ground is a waste of time.

And doing squats, lunges, leg press can do alot in terms of strength and improved performance that relates to playing football.

Yes there are a lot of hills. Actually there is a local one nearby which I run up quite a lot.

When I do train (often with only a couple of other guys) we do that sprint up a hill and jog down. I'll add lunges and squats to the routine.

I'm also interested in general cadio fitness outside of football. Perhaps I can use my local hill to my advantage? There is a circular track going around it and up it.

Yeah get using the track aswell. 400 x 400 or 200 x 200 where you run at your maximum then jog for your recovery and repeat 3-5 times.

Time your runs aswell so you can improve your distance over time or complete a sprint drill in an allotted time.

No, his last season in the Bundesliga was pretty poor. In fact, since Ozil left Bremen, Marin has been pretty shite.

Plus, keep in mind that Chelski signed him before the Champions League final, at which point in time it seemed unlikely that they were going to qualify for this year's Champions Leavue and attract any big name signings such as Hazard.

So has the Baines to United deal gone cold? After our 12m bid was rejected it was reported we would make a renewed bid of £15million plus add-ons, worth a total of 20m but I haven't heard any more news yet..?

Yea I think Evra would have to leave to make way for Baines, shame cuz Evra has been a great player for the club, sad to see him leave.

Baines said only the other day that he's looking forward to working with Martinez so it's come out of the blue really. Don't get me wrong, I would be made up if Baines joins United, especially if he plays left mid...Buttner LB?

Didn't read the Baines quote. I thought when Oviedo was bought the writing was on the all. The pundits on radio seem to think it's a done deal with only the price an issue especially as it is WC Baines will need to play for a top team to oust Cole.
Question is, if he was at United and came in at 8m, would you buy him?

Yea I understand the WC thing, I think he's England future LB anyway, regardless of who he plays for. If he joins United I wouldn't buy him straight away, 7.5 or 8.0 - I would wait and see where he plays and how quickly he settles in. If he starts playing left mid or even if he's still at LB but getting more attacking freedom then I would have to bring him in for sure.

What do you Chaps think of The Wire?

I watched the first episode yesterday and it seems like it's going to be really hard for me to relate to, I also don't know if I can get past the swearing barrier, I'm fine with swearing for emphasis but when it's every other word it distracts me from the plot, hopefully I'll grow to enjoy the show and get past the barrier!

You don't need to relate to it. I can't relate to crystal meth production and distribution but BB one of my favourite shows.

There is alot of cursing in The Wire but it's set in the projects in Baltimore. I would find it hard to believe if it wasn't how they portray it. Season 1 is excellent so you need to stick with it beyond episode 1. Each Season is very different so there is alot more to it that you think.

It's awesome, second to the sopranos in my books.

First three episodes of the wire are slow, persevere with it and you will love it.

Lot's of swearing though, but thats part of it. Theres one scene in the first season where Bunk and McNulty only say f**k for about a minute, no other words.
