Moving Target

Moving Target – Jerome Thomas

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway made his third signing of the close season last week by acquiring Jerome Thomas on a free transfer. The 30-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a two-year deal and follows Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to the club as Holloway strengthens his side in preparation for next term.

Speaking to the Palace official website, Thomas admitted he had a number of offers on the table but, following talks with the Eagles boss, was convinced he’ll have a part to play for in the season ahead:

“It was a case of me being on a free and weighing up my options. I wanted to stay at the top level, which is obviously the Premier League. I heard of Crystal Palace’s interest from January actually, and once they got promoted Ollie gave me a call when I was away on holiday, we had a good talk for about 45 minutes and after that conversation there wasn’t much doubt in my mind where I wanted to go. I hope I can bring a lot to the team. I’ve got experience of the Premier League and the gaffer’s going to give me the freedom to play how I want to play – my attacking game – which I haven’t been able to do for the last couple of seasons. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Thomas failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners. Farmed out on loan to QPR between 2001-03, he featured just 10 times over two seasons and found the net three times before Charlton snapped him up for £100,000 back in 2004.

Established as a regular at The Valley, the winger went on to make 103 appearances, producing seven goals and four assists for the Championship club before making his way to then-Premier League Portsmouth on loan in August 2008. Thomas signed a permanent one-year deal just a few days later but a spine problem put paid to his game time and restricted him to a couple of appearances.

He was then snapped up by West Brom as a free agent the following summer and proceeded to play a pivotal part in the Baggies return to the top-flight, scoring seven times and providing a pair of assists in 27 Championship appearances. Thomas’ most impressive campaign in the Premier League arrived in 2010/11, where he managed three goals and seven assists in 33 appearances, but the installation of Roy Hodgson and, subsequently, Steve Clarke, proved detrimental to his prospects. The winger managed just one goal and three assists in 39 appearances over the past two seasons and was farmed out on loan to Leeds for a brief spell last term, producing a goal and pair of assists in six matches before returning to his parent club.

The Prospects

Judging by Thomas’ comments, it certainly seems that he’s been given assurance of game time over the season ahead as Holloway looks for a little extra top-flight experience in order to prevent Palace from slipping straight back into the Championship. While the Eagles boss fielded Yannick Bolasie on the left flank for the vast majority of last season’s matches, it was noticeable that he turned to youngster Jonathan Williams for the play-offs – a suggestion that he wasn’t quite settled on a regular for the position.

Alternatively, Thomas could be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward in Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation for the season ahead and if he’s afforded the above-mentioned “freedom”, could prove a canny purchase by the Londoners. Yet to be listed by either the Sun Dream Team or the Sky Sports games, Thomas’ appeal for the 2013/14 is mainly down to a cut-price valuation of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, making his perfect fifth midfielder material.

With virtually every other midfielder under 5.0 plying their trade in a more defensive position, Thomas’ popularity is likely to take an unexpected hike as we analyse the Player Lists for this season’s Raheem Sterling or Jason Puncheon. While there will surely be more alternatives to come over the next few weeks as clubs bolster their squads, the likes of Villa’s Aleksandar Tonev, Southampton’s Victor Wanyama and Hull trio Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady or Roberto Koren (all priced at 5.0) could appeal to those eyeing up a midfield rotation partner for the former Baggies man, with the latter two offering a solid option over the first seven Gameweeks.

Essentially, then, we’re not expecting Thomas to light up the top-flight on a weekly basis but at that price, he could prove decent value for money if Holloway is true to his word and hands him a regular role.

tbh i really can't decide between lambo & jrod. The big guy has set pieces guaranteed with him, and people are saying JRod is a better pick since he's playing a bit forward than Lambo at the end of last season and looks very dangerous + 1.5m cheaper.

i'm getting clyne, and maybe boruc too. 😉

        Thanks mate!

J.Rod is soo talented but, i'm not sold on him and i believe Lambo is over priced.

Now whilst i believe the new BAP system might give the edge to Lambo, i'm ownly shortlisting J.Rod because he appears to have a massive potential to score higher than his price tag would suggest

If i were to double on Soton D,
Boruc Vs Shaw (or whichever back @ 4.5M I don't select)
Whilst Boruc has proven to be a good keeper, Davis and Gazzaniga have played and at the same time, he is .5 more expensive.

And if i double on Soton D i can't really justify picking Gaston Rameriz and or Lambert/Jrod

I tend to agree with the thinking that southampton will have a fair amount of success this year, and that it's worth loading up on the bagains, especially considering their early fixtures.
I'm thinking of going for Shaw just because everyone on here seems to be going for Clyne.
For attacking cover, I'm going JRod. I would have to see Ramirez prove himself before considering him.

thanks all for the feed back

I'm now starting to think Clyne simply because he's a proven FPL scorer and has shown he has no worries playing a load of games in a season as well as accumulating attacking stats (1 goal and 3 assists isn't bad) and i think at 4.5 you need a southhampton def cover, Wanyama and Lovern signing have only made me more keen on Soton as the club to show the most improvement.

as for attackers, Lambo seems over prices and J.Rod seems unproven... (also no room in my fwd line for him, Augero Anelka and sturridge)

Trying to figure out the ideal time to use the wildcard. Specifically, I want to figue out if an early wildcard was the reason for my high team value last year. Ideally, I would want to hold on to it until late in the season in order to take advantage of any DGWs.

Last year my team's value took off after the wildcard around GW9... And that team value really helped later in the season when I was able to bring in many big hitters.

So my question is whether waiting until late in the year to play the wildcard is actually a bad strategy because of the detrimental effect it could have on team value...

Yes, those weeks at the end of the season when he played well certainly seem to have cranked his price up.

Anybody thinking on waiting on Liverpool attacking options?

Sturridge is great but not sure about fitness.
Aspas provides great value but we're not sure where he figures in BR's plans
Coutinho brings points but at 9.0mil is not good value (almost a big hitter)

With Pool's first fixtures, STO, AVL,MAN, I'm planning to steer clear and wait and see what how they perform. Their next 5 fixtures are really really promising attacking wise! (swa,SOT,sun,CRY,new,WBA)

Studge is a great pick given suarez's absence, but if aspas is also nailed on and gets some early form, he could be a steal and at 7.0m, people who are brave enough to select him ahead of studge would be massively rewarded. Coutinho is too costly at 9.0, but if he gets some form too, maybe that price tag will be justified.

i'd say no harm getting a Liverpool forward from GW1, their fixtures definitely look good. You can also play the waiting game if you want to.

I agree, completely with this comment,
whilst i'd love to show some faith and courage and pick Aspas, Sturridge seems a much safer bet with Saurez out and their nice fixtures.

I'd also like Coutniho if he was 8M he'd be in 100% but, his price has scared me off him,

why don't more sides have Kolo Toure?
surely he's preferred by Rodgers over martin Skrtel? Last season BR played Carra a lot, surely a 5m unless they sign another defender he's a steal and their 2nd best center half?

i think it's too good to be true but at the same time, BR doesn't seem to like playing Skrtel.

5.0 is a great price for him , problem is so many other good options at 4.5 and people are prioritizing good rotations (SOT-WHU combo, ofr example) at the back. Plus, Coleman is also 5.0 and OOP. And there are Kaboul, Dawson and NOR defenders.

Coleman, Toure, David Luiz with Clyne rotating with Mids in some weeks and McNaughton at 4Mil

Wow, too much at the back imo. IF he's nailed on and bring you good points, then your differential move would be a masterstroke. Right now, i'm not sure i'll get him. i'd prefer Nasty for an extra .5 because it's City.

Hey guys, does it make sense to make a team for GW1 with Hazard if he doesn''t have a DGW?

Chelsea are playing Hull at home which is a good fixture but followed by Man Utd (away) in GW2 and then a blank.

So wouldn't it be better to start with either Silva or Cazorla or Walcott instead? They all have very good fixtures to begin with and don't have a blank in GW3. All are around the same price as Hazard so can easily switch to him after his blank.

    Thoughts??

Double gameweek or no double gameweek, you would be a brave person in my books to go into gameweek 1 without some form of Chelsea cover. It would be just like Chelsea to post an 8-0 win or some other cricket score over poor old Hull. Very easy to switch Hazard out afterwards anyway.

Well last season most of the defenders priced at 5.0 were no better than the cheaper ones.
I went that bit extra for McMauley at one stage and that waster Debuchy , both let me down

After xmas when more money added Enrique , but before xmas no

i understand, this season's 4.5 DEFs are really great options, and they tend to rotate perfectly too. But i still think an extra 1 mil for the likes of Mert, Kos and Nasty is justified since their CS potential is higher, when you consider the overall strength of their team defence.

Going cheap at the back as well, but Coleman at 5.0 slotted right into my first draft

      Coleman Tuner Collins Clyne Chester

You going cheap GKs as well, trigger?

The thing with defenders priced at 5 or 5,5 is they still not good enough to play every match , so when they away you leaving an extra million or two on your bench

If you pick five 4,5s from teams which rotate well then you are getting three goood fixtures each week

Hey DZers--what're the thoughts on Aspas?

Looked good in his debut a few days ago...and 2.0 less than Studge

Suarez is out (for at least 6 weeks), and Sturridge's fitness might be iffy so Aspas could be a fine pick in the early weeks.

Lamps and Anelka's game time in question. Sturridge may not be ready for the season kick off.
