Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

I want a man city, chelsea and pool defender of keeper.

    Which 3 would you select.

Migs or another - cheapest keeper by far but less nailed on that others.

zab/komp- zab cheaper but kompany more nailed on. both have good attacking threat

azpil or cole- cole more nailed on but azpil cheaper

Its a tough one, the 1 mill from azpil and zab over cole and kompany would be nicebut i dont want my big money defenders sitting on the bench.

What does the rest of the team look like when you have that much spent at the back? If it works out then you will certainly get a march on all the teams with their £30m spent at the back! I would go Migs, Zab, Azpi if I had to. Although not convinced on Migs or Azpi for game time yet.

      I posted this yesterday:

"I personally think Toure will start even if we sign another defender.

Rodgers has signed him on a free, mainly for leadership at the back. Which when we didnt have it last season, was all over the place. Carragher being as old as he was, added so much security. So I personally think Toure is nailed on, along with Agger, Johnson and Enrique and at £5.0m one of the best defenders in the game and a cheaper way into Liverpool defence. He will rise, because Liverpool are tight defensively. I'm hoping he can get a couple of goals aswell. Toure has already been pushed in with Gerrard as "elder statesman".....he has basically replaced Carragher. IMO I think it will be on of the signings of the summer, especially on a free. Wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they make him vice captain."

I support Liverpool for what its worth.

25 is the max. It's looking like it'll be 20 or 25 at this rate.

For example if it closed now you would have to have a rank of 734 or higher to be in the RVP(div1) league, so competitive stuff 😉

From previous page (hard to keep track of things with no recent comments)

Ok lads, been toying all day with the most burning FPL issue out there, RvP. Tried to put all club loyalties aside and break it down into simple terms. Be glad to get some thoughts

    Pros
    Lead striker for defending champions
Possible Rooney departure makes him a better prospect
On all set-pieces and has pens
Top scorer in last 2 seasons (both in FPL terms and goal terms)
    Basically fixture proof
Less prone to rotation than the City strikers
Could be even more than 14.0 come GW4

    Cons
New manager - will this change how he is used?
Rooney leaving opens door for Hernandez - RvP is less of a prospect
Tough first 3 gameweeks compared to the likes of Aguero and Sturride
Could those 2 easily score more than him over that period
Could drop in price if he blanks in those first few weeks
He's 14.0, think of what you could do with that cash

Whats the love for Kaboul at 5.0? Played 90 mins last season apparently, is he nailed on? A better bet than Dawson also at 5.0? Club captain.

Also will collins play for west ham, they have some real nice fixtures and at 4.5 is a bargain if he starts.

    Krul, Mannone
    Coleman, Shaw, Collins, Chester, Parr

Nothing left in the kitty and obviously not taking into account any DGW.

A lot of risks in there. Unnecessary ones too.

Sturridge I'd say is a must considering his form, fixtures and Suarez's ban.

Kagawa as well for me is definitely a wait and see. We don't know how Utd are going to lineup and they have tough fixtures to start the season with so there's unlikely to be a major splash. Keep tabs, but it's just not worth risking it to start the season imho.

Perish the thought of people using their free transfers on players who suddenly find themselves out of the team.

There's no reason to suggest he isn't first choice. Finished strongly last season, had a few injuries. Looks good in pre-season, i don't see the risk?

Can I get people's views on this?

    Foster - Mannone

    Nastasic - Coleman - Collins - Turner - Clyne

    Bale - Hazard - Mirallas - Snodgrass - Thomas

    Aguero - Sturridge - Rodriguez

I'm toying with the idea of Aspas as opposed to Sturridge in order to save 2m. Also, will Collins and Nastasic both get game time (ie, nailed on every week)?

    Thanks..

Was thinking that but, is he guaranteed to play? Looking at his past FPL performances, he has relatively low scores which make me think he isn't great FPL-wise although the scores may have been skewed by injury..
