Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

    Hi guys,

    Any recommendations on my team?

    Boruc, Jääskeläinen
    Coleman, Collins, Garrido, Clyne, Zabaleta
    Bale, Walcott, Nolan, Mirallas, Puncheon
    Sturridge, Dzeko, Kone

Worried about Dzeko's game time and not having Chelsea cover, but other than Lampard, they are a bit steep with risk of rotation.
    Greatly appreciate any advice/ideas.
    Thanks

walcott is cover enough. i like the team, puncheon underperformed last year, could be a different story this year. if city sign another striker though you'll have to rethink dzeko
also i would change jussi to foster, i think its a better rotation and you save 0.5 mil

I wouldmt say there are any stupid picks but I think perhaps the distribution of £ is a bit off.

Yeah you raised the Dzeko point, I think you should lose him because it looks increasingly like City are going to sign both Negredo and Jovetic. Aguero is the main man so I think Dzeko will be competing with the other 2 for one spot.

5.5 is maybe 0.5 too much for the 5th midfielder, or if you were to stick with a 5.5 lose Puncheon because he was in and out the team toward end of last season when the new manager came in.

My personal opinion I like having a 'big' striker for captaincy to go with Bale so Aguero/RVP but as I say this is personal opinion.

Jaaskelainen 5.5 maybe better options and could save money here, or if you want a 5.5 Reina/Mignolet(whichever we find will be first choice) may be better option

        Thanks for the opinions guys.
        Ok, made some changes.

        Boruc, Foster
        Coleman, Collins, Turner, Clyne, Zabaleta
        Bale, Walcott, Nolan, Mirallas, Thomas
        Sturridge, Aguero, Anelka

        Looking stronger?
Waiting to assess pre-season games and signings to alter the team as need be.
You think City will play with 2 up front?
Do you think any of their attacking midfielders are nailed on starters?
Jussi was their as I think West Ham's opening games are so favourable and not sure if Collins place is safe.
Was going to swap for Liverpool/Arsenal #1 once that was clear.
I believe I have 4 strong captain choices now in Bale, Walcott, Aguero and Strurridge.

If Schurrle keeps looking this 1 footed then a lot more. Looks to be next in line in the rotation, taking all set pieces except pens, and can play anywhere in mid 5.

also might be tempted by just one of cazorla/walcott to strengthen forward line or perhaps Coutinho - i know there is s strong view he is overpriced but i think he is going to be a star player thios season

      my perspective:
i dont like only having 1 keeper, i think having the roattion gives you so many more points over the year than the 0.5mil you saved is worth
i think with the budget options this year that your defense is over budgeted
midfield is good but would only have lampard if chelsea DGW early on, otherwise consider someone else
its a punty strikeforce but its as good as anyones guess

Terry LOL he won't be nailed on, your subs are dismal espicially Price. Aspas No. Having both Walcott and Caz is just stupid, as you don't even have decent pool coverage or Man U coverage. And Lampard is a defensive player who only really scores from pens and own't get many mins. No Bale or RVP.

2/10 and that is being kind, totally unbalanced, if your midfield fails your dead. No wonder why no one gav eyou feedback

Mert for me. I had him in, but I had to downgrade to Kolo to free up some cash. I think Pool should be good for CS for the first few weeks, and i reckon he might get some starts, Rodgers doesn't seem to have faith in Skrtel. What do you reckon?

Also, keen to get your thoughts on the Sunderland keeper situation? Currently have Boruc/Foster, but a downgrade there means I can upgrade Kolo, or Turner to Clyne

        Thanks everyone, still undecided.

Kolo is a good punt i think. All depends on whether Liverpool by anyone else. I'd say as of now he'll start the season with Agger. Skrtel seems very much in the dog house. I think Westwood will play, has impressed when i've watched him, and reckon Mannone was signed just as competition/cover. But he can easily be dropped if he has some bad games so watch out.

    Which strategy do you prefer?

    A. Build what you think is a good team and if all goes wrong, wildcard in the first 4 GWs

    B. Build what you think is a good team but with budget in mind for those big hitters you thought you could left out

    C. Build what you think is a good team with transfers planned for the next 6 GWs

    D. Build what you think is a good team and try to wildcard as late as possible even if you have a bad start
