Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Wednesday

Iago Aspas is amongst the goals again as Liverpool register a sixth straight summer victory. Jose Mourinho is without David Luiz and Juan Mata as Chelsea taste defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, Adam Johnson fires Sunderland to a narrow win, Pablo Hernandez and Jonjo Shelvey are out of Swansea’s trip to Malmo this evening, while Stephen Quinn may miss Hull’s opener at Chelsea with a hamstring problem:

Valerenga 1 Liverpool 4
The Reds maintained their 100% pre-season record with an easy win in Norway last night. Brendan Rodgers made nine changes from the side that started in the weekend win over Olympiakos – with only Joe Allen and Iago Aspas retaining their places – and the latter once again impressed; his shot rebounded off the bar, allowing Luis Alberto to open the scoring, before the former Celta Vigo man fired home the second to notch his fourth goal in six appearances. The Reds boss utilised the depth of his squad by making 10 changes at the break, allowing Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling the opportunity to further extend the visitors’ lead.

After the game, Aspas was once again the subject of his manager’s praise. With a superb opening schedule ahead, investment in Liverpool’s attacking assets looks a viable tactic and while Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge have earned plenty owners across the Fantasy games – despite the latter failing to feature over the summer so far – Aspas could prove a cheaper differential option if his current form continues. Certainly, his manager has been thoroughly impressed:

“I thought he was excellent again tonight, When you watch him, his movement is outstanding. If you look at the movement for the second goal, he made his first run when Stewart Downing had the ball. The line was blocked for him and he made a double movement to come in again. Obviously he was there to finish. He’s a goalscorer, that’s the reason we brought him in. It was a lovely chip that hit the crossbar [for Alberto’s goal] and it eventually came out, and we got a goal from that as well. He’s a really exciting player and in and around the box he can make things happen. He works his socks off as well. He’s done very well over the course of pre-season.”

FC Midtjylland 0 Sunderland 1
The Black Cats continued their impressive pre-season with a narrow win away to the Danish league leaders last night. Paolo Di Canio made three changes from the side that played Man City in the recent Barclays Asia Trophy match, with Kieran Westwood getting the nod in goal ahead of Vito Mannone, while Carlos Cuellar and Valentin Roberge were drafted into the back-four as Craig Gardner and Wes Brown dropped out. Further up the field, Sunderland are beginning to look settled in terms of selection –Adam Johnson and Emanuel Giaccherini were again fielded on the flanks, with Stephane Sessegnon tucking in behind Jozy Altidore in light of Steven Fletcher’s ongoing ankle injury. Johnson grabbed the match-winner (his first of the summer) thanks to an Altidore assist in a match that saw Di Canio make six changes as the second period progressed, with new boys El Hadji Ba, David Moberg Karlsson and Modibo Diakite amongst those introduced from the bench.

Despite the victory, Di Canio was far from happy with the performance. Alluding to the display of one of the club’s “French speaking players”, which was believed to be an under-par Stephane Sessegnon, the Italian admitted:

“I was disappointed with the attitude. The attitude is crucial. We can talk about tactics during the season or technical mistakes that can be improved by practice, but the attitude is the thing you don’t know. Some of my players are new, so I don’t know. I would not be arrogant enough to think I can discover their attitude in two hours of playing, but it can change for whatever reason. Yesterday was a big opportunity for all the players to show we are ready to start the season strong, but some of them failed to complete the mission. I have to make sure they change their mentality otherwise we will have a problem.”

Di Canio also explained the absence of Wes Brown and Jo Dong-won, who both failed to travel for the match. The Black Cats boss revealed the former is set to be a key figure in his plans for the campaign ahead:

“Wes had a little problem and we decided not to risk him on the day. He has had a very good pre-season, which was a surprise for everyone, even him. We didn’t want to risk him because he’s an important player now. On the day of the game he was running again. And today he can train harder because I want him to be available as soon as possible. It’s good for us that we have a player of his ability in our squad, and it is important to us that we have him able to play for us next season. As for Ji, he has been out for a few days, but we expect him to be back in training in the next few days. So at this moment in time, we do not have any real worries about either of them.”

Chelsea 1 Real Madrid 3
The Blues tasted defeat for the first time this summer as Jose Mourinho was downed by his former employers. Chelsea lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Frank Lampard making his first appearance of the summer alongside Ramires and Marco Van Ginkel in midfield, while up top, Oscar and Eden Hazard flanked Romelu Lukaku. In defence, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole were handed the full-back roles, with John Terry partnering Gary Cahill at centre-half in front of Petr Cech. Lukaku teed up Ramires for Chelsea’s only goal before making way for Fernando Torres in one of six second-half changes, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle and Victor Moses also emerging from the bench.

David Luiz missed out with a minor hamstring problem, while Juan Mata was also omitted from the matchday squad – after the match, Mourinho gave an update on their fitness ahead of Saturday’s final friendly of pre-season:

“I don’t know if David Luiz and Mata will be back for Roma, they have some small problems, Mata a new one and David Luiz a problem he had in the past, a muscular injury he had before the Champions League final. They are working with the physios in Washington instead of travelling here. We’ll see if they can join the team and play a little against Roma.”

In Other News
Jonjo Shelvey and Pablo Hernandez have both been omitted from Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this evening. The Swans travel to Sweden with a 4-0 first-leg advantage as they look to clinch a place in the group stages and with plenty of midfield additions over the summer, Michael Laudrup is expected to make some alterations to his starting XI, with Nathan Dyer and Jonathan de Guzman set to benefit from the duo’s absence. With their Gameweek 1 home clash against United just over a week away now, the Swans boss played down concerns over the pair’s fitness and expects them to be ready in time to face David Moyes’ side at the Liberty:

“We have a couple of players not here. We didn’t want to risk Pablo because we are talking about a muscle injury. He’s already training, but we will wait and he will train today and tomorrow and with the squad on Friday. The players are off for the weekend and hopefully he will be 100 per cent for Monday. Jonjo is sick – yesterday he had a fever. We spoke to the doctor last night and we agreed to see how he was this morning to see if he was better but he is worse, so that is why he has not travelled.”

Hull are sweating on the fitness of Stephen Quinn after the midfielder picked up a hamstring problem in the club’s friendly loss to Eintracht Braunschweig. Steve Bruce revealed yesterday the Tigers are awaiting scan results, with Quinn now rated doubtful for the Gameweek 1 trip to Stamford Bridge:

“It looks a bad one on first impressions so I wouldn’t have thought he’ll be fit for Chelsea, which is the big blow. Up until now we’d had a few knocks and a few strains but nothing that will keep anyone out for long, so it’s a big blow to lose Quinny. He got his foot caught and pulled his hamstring. We’ll not know the severity of it until we get home but he feels it just walking. That’s obviously a worry but I really can’t say how long it will be until we scan it.”

Having missed only four of 46 matches last term, Quinn’s security of starts – allied with three goals and six assists in 2012/13 – had offered Fantasy managers a reliable route into the cut-price bracket across the Fantasy games. One of the very few relatively appealing 4.5 priced midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his potential absence lessens the number of budget options and perhaps furthers the prospects of Palace’s Jerome Thomas as a cheap fifth midfielder for those looking to pay under 5.0.

Tim Krul believes he is firmly on course to make Newcastle’s opener at City on Monday August 19. After undergoing a shoulder operation towards the end of the previous campaign, the Dutchman has built up his fitness and made his first appearance of the summer on Tuesday evening against Glasgow Rangers. Krul was given 45 minutes by Alan Pardew but insists he is ready for the season kick-off:

“I’ve had a great couple of weeks training with all of the lads. It has been all about getting the confidence of making a few good saves again. You can train when you’ve been injured, but the best test is always to get back out there, and train again. I’ve just been focusing on the game and making saves. I’ve been training hard to get back in time. “Everything has worked to plan so far. The schedule I’ve had with the physios has worked well. It’s been spot on. They kept me back at one stage because the training was going well, but it’s all about the new season now.”

While Krul is confident of his availability, Pardew was a little more tentative when discussing his keeper’s fitness after the Dutchman missed 14 matches of the 2012/13 with a number of injuries. Given how crucial he is to the Newcastle cause, it seems likely that Krul will get the nod for the Etihad clash, with another 11 days left to step up his fitness:

“Looking at Tim, he’s been out for a long time. He is one of the best keepers in the world, so we want him up to speed. That means we have to be careful. We must make sure that he returns properly, and is fully fit for the season.”

Berbatov would be my pick. Just. Wouldn't argue against Lambert though.

If you're happy with Dzeko being a punt that you'd have to transfer out sooner rather than later, he could be worth a shot. Risk and reward I guess.

Haven't changed this team for a week, which is pretty surprising given my constant pre-season tinkering. I guess that means I'm happy with what I have. Gone quiet on the Bale front for now, so he could be back in here come the 17th.

    Mannone
    Cole*, Turner, Collins
    Theo, Hazard*, Cout, Snoddy, Ravel
    RVP, Lukaku*

    Subs: Boruc, Clyne, Chester, J-Rod

All good going into DGW? Don't want to risk any AVL players as they could easily get nothing from their two games and it would be an inevitable transfer, which I'm trying to avoid.

Baines is the 7.5 mil Everton player to own.

Right, I have been banging on about this all day and have looked into the members area to see if my blind faith in Baines being superior to Mirallas is supported by stats.

To be fair, I have looked at average stats as opposed to season totals given that Baines played more matches than Mirallas last season (38 to 27). FYI - Mirallas was subbed off 18 times in 27 appearances, Baines 0

    - Baines averaged nearly double the amount of touches, 32% more touches in the opponent's half, 24% more in the final third.
    - Completed passes was all Baines again more than double Mirallas overall and successful, with passes in the final third only offering Baines a 38% advantage. The stand out stat is Baines successfully passes in the final 3rd were a staggering 85.9% successful compared to Mirallas 70.5%.
    - Chances created 3.1 to 1.6 for Baines
    - Crossing is all Baines (but everyone knew that)
    - Goal threat saw Mirallas with a big advantage in all key areas including overall attempts and attempts in the box (over 50% in both)
    - Mirallas had 4 to 1 as many attempts at goal and had a better accuracy (38% to 29%) although Baines had a better goal conversion 13.5 to 8.5
    - Baines lead all the defending cats except for goals conceded

So what do we make of all this? To me, with Everton likely playing 3 - 4 - 3 and Baines on the wing, his involvement and chances will increase. That being said so will Mirallas. The fact Baines is on direct free kicks and penalties in a team that will attack more than it did last year suggests to me that for 7.5 mil you would be taking a punt having Mirallas in your team when you could have Baines for the same outlay. Furthermore, against the weaker clubs at home Baines becomes a viable Captain pick (not sure you can say the same about Mirallas).

Disclaimer - I don't intend to start with either player in GW1.

"likely to play 3-4-3" is just an assumption considering they've played 4-3-3 in most games. I think they are both good options with Baines being slightly the better one of the two.

That said, the deciding factor for me is that Baines + 5.0 midfielder (Kim/Koren/Brady) is pretty average, whereas 5.0 DF (Toure/Debuchy/etc) + 7.5 Mirallas is a better option.

Mirallas being subbed off regularly bears little relevance now the manager has been changed

Pre-season, Mirallas has been handed some corner and free kick duties.

Most importantly though. Martinez's teams are always good going forward, and poor defensively.

            Marginally fewer I'd say.

He'd get plenty of assists for RVP/Hernandez, and more clean sheets, but would lose penalty duties as well as some of his free-kicks and corners.

Baines is never a captain pick for me.

I guess in the context of your entire team your 5 mil mid could be bench fodder and likely not play any minutes. By the same token you could have your 4.5 mil defender a part of a rotation at the back.

Baines offers a great alternative as a captain IMO. A goal & a clean sheet alone are worth 24 points.

          Captaining Baines works in theory.

In practice, he gets a penalty away at Fulham when you haven't really considered him and they concede a late goal at home to Norwich when you thought it was a great idea.

It's nigh on impossible to compare between positions. The price doesn't compare because something like Mirallas + Collins will arguably do much better than say Baines + Thomas.

People saying they're the same price so we can compare them are wrong. The positions within each category can only be compared to others in the same category.

I always like to think of Baines as having a 6th mid, but it never works like that because you still need to fill up spots and you have a budget.

I guess you could use Baines if you considered playing 4-3-3 instead of 3-4-3, in that case your 4.5m mid is as much bench fodder as your 4.5m defender.

But now you only have 4 defenders to fill 3 spots. So that becomes more difficult on a rotation basis.

      It's not that simple.

The question I ask myself is how many 5.5 million or less midfielders would I be happy playing most weeks? The answer is very few. How many 5.5 million or less defenders would I be happy with? There's more options available.

Also Mirallas stats last season are distorted by poor fitness due to injury, he's had a more healthy spell in the side now and is looking good. I'm sure if you performed a similar comparison a couple of years ago for Nasri vs. RVP, Nasri would have come out on top.

    Evening lads,

As always, feel free to join: 177189-154868

Reckon this is as close as I will get for the next week. Doesn't feel perfect, but it's close enough 😉

    Mignolet (Davis)

    Toure Coleman Collins (Shaw Brayford)

    Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas (Thomas)

    RVP Lukaku Anelka

So many people posting teams that are similar to mine.

This does not bode well as the consensus here is usually pretty average on the scoring charts (no offence to you all - but let's be honest the consensus team had Boselli in it...)

Anyway the key names that I think everyone seems to be working on is

      Mignolet/4
Some combination that includes 2 of Coleman/Toure/Mertesacker/Koscieny - Cole/Ivanovic when players go no-RvP then fill up with random 4/4.5s (Brayford, Collins, Turner (NOR), Clyne/Shaw)
Hazard/Walcott/Mirallas/Thomas and then Countiho if going big or someone like Nolan if needing to free up funds
Lukaku always - strikers always go funny but lots of RvP/Anelka combo'ing (sometimes JRod) - otherwise Soldado/Sturridge and Dzeko/Giroud

So ye, if your team looks anything like that - you're ok by the forums standards - whether you think that's good or bad is up to you.

Let's see (going by your website team...):

          Mignolet/4m 2/2
Mertesacker but no other 5/5.5m - Turner and Clyne - so 3/5
          Hazard/Mirallas - 2/5
RvP/Lukaku - 2/5 (I mentioned Giroud but that was usually in an RvPless version)

so overall - you have 9 out of 15 template team points 😛

            Haz/Silva/Mirallas (Kim/Jarvis)

            RVP/Giroud/JRod

Perhaps you can answer the following (without trying to drag you back to the template)

Why not Mignolet/4 - are you worried about the non-playing 4 or do you think you'll do better with the rotation?

GJ is more nailed on than Toure and has much better attacking potential - but is that worth 1m?

I see you going with Giroud for Arsenal - but I can't seem to ignore Walcott, he has such explosive potential (this would be in the Silva spot).

You only have 1 DGW player? Surely you need one more (I'm going for 2), the obvious pick is Lukaku.

Jarvis is a nice punt - for 5.5 you're allowed to take a chance I guess. But what about Morrisson if you're punting anyway?

Every season we say the same thing though.

I can rationalise every player on that list. As I said, I have close to the same team (not because of these forums I swear).

The RMT's form a consensus and every body who has a different opinion gets drowned out. So when someone suggests Silva - we get pushed towards Coutinho/Walcott instead. Mata - save the money get Hazard instead etc etc.

And while all those arguments are valid, we can't predict the future - and there'll be somebody out there with this years Michu (wait for him to settle the consensus said while the better players went with their gut and got him in).

Personally I don't trust Arsenal enough to put 5.5 in them. I'd probably downgrade Kos to Kolo/Coleman and upgrade one of the others. But if you have faith in Arsenal to play him every week, I think the back five are fine for the price apart from him.

Very similar to what I have. Or at least what I intend to have after Chelsea's DGW.

I have two 4.5 rotating goalkeepers in Boruc and Mannone. Perhaps doing this you could improve Shaw to Toure and thus have your Liverpool coverage at the back. That way you'd have the same coverage but an extra option in rotation. Just a suggestion.

Who's the third Chelsea attacker? That looks okay to me, maybe swap Migs/Kos for Szcz/Toure, just to save the .5. Then you could have a backup keeper or splash a little more on one of the defenders. But Migs/Kos is probably safer with a higher upside.

Wouldn't consider Benteke a punt, Dzeko would be my main issue with Silva already there and you really need your third striker to be playing with the blank coming, but it could pay off big time. With the 1.5 spare though I'd be very tempted to upgrade Dzeko to Sturridge if he's fit.

Spanish Injuries?!?!? I was just thinking about Mata missing last nights game and it made me curious as to how many Spanish players do you think will have picked up "knocks" and not be available for international duty next week??? Yes I know that I am a cynic and that SAF is not in the league anymore but I think it could really throw a spanner in some plans if the likes of Mata do not travel with the Spain squad...........food for thought.

I had not actually considered it until last night but I know what I would be doing with my players, especially if like Jose they are key players that already have two games in a few days in the Prem.

Rooney to Chelsea may or may not happen - can't see United letting Chelsea strengthen if they can avoid it. My guess is, if he leave it'll be overseas.

However, I can't help thinking that he'd be a monster at Chelsea. Jose would turn him in to the player he's always nearly been (no disrespect, he's been excellent for Man U). Should this move happen, I'd get him in my team without a moments thought - anyone else hoping this will happen? What's your guys opinion on his FF prospects if it does.

Apologies if this has been asked before...

.....if it happens, my front line would most likely secure me top spot come May 🙂

Coutinho // Walcott // Zaha // Silva (Kim)
      Soldado // Bony // Rooney

Go on Wayne, Londons a lovely place to live.

Would Baines at United heighten or lessen his appeal?

Loses penalties, but higher assist and clean sheet potential. Say three penalties and resultant bonus are worth just shy of 30 points, four extra cleanies and he's half way there...

He would also lose plenty of set pieces and may not be required to come forward as much.

so how does this look chaps?

    mannone boruc
    toure collins turner chester brayford
    hazard snodgrass mirrales walcott jarvis
    rvp lukaku dzeko

1.0 in the bank. the idea is to have jarvis as semi-decent back-up to dzeko/lukaku missing a game and to utilise the 1.0 left over to build team value with early bandwagons/upgrade the defence once its a little clearer who's been working hard in pre-season on shutting opposition down. any suggestions?

I'd spend the extra 1.0 on the defence, you can get on early bandwagons by shipping chelsea players for mun BLANK eve, and maybe downgrade Jarvis because I have nightmares about 5.5 dyer scoring 15 bench points in GW1 last year.

good point about using the chelsea players to chase bandwagons, had thought about that. i want to give dzeko (and possibly lukaku if he does well gw1) a good chance at the start of the season so i think a decent 5th midfielder is neccessary for the chance dezkos benched. cheers for your thoughts

I have 10 of that 15 but on the basis that I've had them all in my drafts over the last fortnight, I'd say it's a very good team. Very impressive.

Only issue is with that extra 1.0 would it not be wise to bank yourself a Chelsea clean sheet? You'd suspect they'd get at least one from their two games. Toure > Terry?
