Pre-Season

Friendlies Round-Up – Wednesday

Iago Aspas is amongst the goals again as Liverpool register a sixth straight summer victory. Jose Mourinho is without David Luiz and Juan Mata as Chelsea taste defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, Adam Johnson fires Sunderland to a narrow win, Pablo Hernandez and Jonjo Shelvey are out of Swansea’s trip to Malmo this evening, while Stephen Quinn may miss Hull’s opener at Chelsea with a hamstring problem:

Valerenga 1 Liverpool 4
The Reds maintained their 100% pre-season record with an easy win in Norway last night. Brendan Rodgers made nine changes from the side that started in the weekend win over Olympiakos – with only Joe Allen and Iago Aspas retaining their places – and the latter once again impressed; his shot rebounded off the bar, allowing Luis Alberto to open the scoring, before the former Celta Vigo man fired home the second to notch his fourth goal in six appearances. The Reds boss utilised the depth of his squad by making 10 changes at the break, allowing Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling the opportunity to further extend the visitors’ lead.

After the game, Aspas was once again the subject of his manager’s praise. With a superb opening schedule ahead, investment in Liverpool’s attacking assets looks a viable tactic and while Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge have earned plenty owners across the Fantasy games – despite the latter failing to feature over the summer so far – Aspas could prove a cheaper differential option if his current form continues. Certainly, his manager has been thoroughly impressed:

“I thought he was excellent again tonight, When you watch him, his movement is outstanding. If you look at the movement for the second goal, he made his first run when Stewart Downing had the ball. The line was blocked for him and he made a double movement to come in again. Obviously he was there to finish. He’s a goalscorer, that’s the reason we brought him in. It was a lovely chip that hit the crossbar [for Alberto’s goal] and it eventually came out, and we got a goal from that as well. He’s a really exciting player and in and around the box he can make things happen. He works his socks off as well. He’s done very well over the course of pre-season.”

FC Midtjylland 0 Sunderland 1
The Black Cats continued their impressive pre-season with a narrow win away to the Danish league leaders last night. Paolo Di Canio made three changes from the side that played Man City in the recent Barclays Asia Trophy match, with Kieran Westwood getting the nod in goal ahead of Vito Mannone, while Carlos Cuellar and Valentin Roberge were drafted into the back-four as Craig Gardner and Wes Brown dropped out. Further up the field, Sunderland are beginning to look settled in terms of selection –Adam Johnson and Emanuel Giaccherini were again fielded on the flanks, with Stephane Sessegnon tucking in behind Jozy Altidore in light of Steven Fletcher’s ongoing ankle injury. Johnson grabbed the match-winner (his first of the summer) thanks to an Altidore assist in a match that saw Di Canio make six changes as the second period progressed, with new boys El Hadji Ba, David Moberg Karlsson and Modibo Diakite amongst those introduced from the bench.

Despite the victory, Di Canio was far from happy with the performance. Alluding to the display of one of the club’s “French speaking players”, which was believed to be an under-par Stephane Sessegnon, the Italian admitted:

“I was disappointed with the attitude. The attitude is crucial. We can talk about tactics during the season or technical mistakes that can be improved by practice, but the attitude is the thing you don’t know. Some of my players are new, so I don’t know. I would not be arrogant enough to think I can discover their attitude in two hours of playing, but it can change for whatever reason. Yesterday was a big opportunity for all the players to show we are ready to start the season strong, but some of them failed to complete the mission. I have to make sure they change their mentality otherwise we will have a problem.”

Di Canio also explained the absence of Wes Brown and Jo Dong-won, who both failed to travel for the match. The Black Cats boss revealed the former is set to be a key figure in his plans for the campaign ahead:

“Wes had a little problem and we decided not to risk him on the day. He has had a very good pre-season, which was a surprise for everyone, even him. We didn’t want to risk him because he’s an important player now. On the day of the game he was running again. And today he can train harder because I want him to be available as soon as possible. It’s good for us that we have a player of his ability in our squad, and it is important to us that we have him able to play for us next season. As for Ji, he has been out for a few days, but we expect him to be back in training in the next few days. So at this moment in time, we do not have any real worries about either of them.”

Chelsea 1 Real Madrid 3
The Blues tasted defeat for the first time this summer as Jose Mourinho was downed by his former employers. Chelsea lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Frank Lampard making his first appearance of the summer alongside Ramires and Marco Van Ginkel in midfield, while up top, Oscar and Eden Hazard flanked Romelu Lukaku. In defence, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole were handed the full-back roles, with John Terry partnering Gary Cahill at centre-half in front of Petr Cech. Lukaku teed up Ramires for Chelsea’s only goal before making way for Fernando Torres in one of six second-half changes, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle and Victor Moses also emerging from the bench.

David Luiz missed out with a minor hamstring problem, while Juan Mata was also omitted from the matchday squad – after the match, Mourinho gave an update on their fitness ahead of Saturday’s final friendly of pre-season:

“I don’t know if David Luiz and Mata will be back for Roma, they have some small problems, Mata a new one and David Luiz a problem he had in the past, a muscular injury he had before the Champions League final. They are working with the physios in Washington instead of travelling here. We’ll see if they can join the team and play a little against Roma.”

In Other News
Jonjo Shelvey and Pablo Hernandez have both been omitted from Swansea’s Europa League trip to Malmo this evening. The Swans travel to Sweden with a 4-0 first-leg advantage as they look to clinch a place in the group stages and with plenty of midfield additions over the summer, Michael Laudrup is expected to make some alterations to his starting XI, with Nathan Dyer and Jonathan de Guzman set to benefit from the duo’s absence. With their Gameweek 1 home clash against United just over a week away now, the Swans boss played down concerns over the pair’s fitness and expects them to be ready in time to face David Moyes’ side at the Liberty:

“We have a couple of players not here. We didn’t want to risk Pablo because we are talking about a muscle injury. He’s already training, but we will wait and he will train today and tomorrow and with the squad on Friday. The players are off for the weekend and hopefully he will be 100 per cent for Monday. Jonjo is sick – yesterday he had a fever. We spoke to the doctor last night and we agreed to see how he was this morning to see if he was better but he is worse, so that is why he has not travelled.”

Hull are sweating on the fitness of Stephen Quinn after the midfielder picked up a hamstring problem in the club’s friendly loss to Eintracht Braunschweig. Steve Bruce revealed yesterday the Tigers are awaiting scan results, with Quinn now rated doubtful for the Gameweek 1 trip to Stamford Bridge:

“It looks a bad one on first impressions so I wouldn’t have thought he’ll be fit for Chelsea, which is the big blow. Up until now we’d had a few knocks and a few strains but nothing that will keep anyone out for long, so it’s a big blow to lose Quinny. He got his foot caught and pulled his hamstring. We’ll not know the severity of it until we get home but he feels it just walking. That’s obviously a worry but I really can’t say how long it will be until we scan it.”

Having missed only four of 46 matches last term, Quinn’s security of starts – allied with three goals and six assists in 2012/13 – had offered Fantasy managers a reliable route into the cut-price bracket across the Fantasy games. One of the very few relatively appealing 4.5 priced midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his potential absence lessens the number of budget options and perhaps furthers the prospects of Palace’s Jerome Thomas as a cheap fifth midfielder for those looking to pay under 5.0.

Tim Krul believes he is firmly on course to make Newcastle’s opener at City on Monday August 19. After undergoing a shoulder operation towards the end of the previous campaign, the Dutchman has built up his fitness and made his first appearance of the summer on Tuesday evening against Glasgow Rangers. Krul was given 45 minutes by Alan Pardew but insists he is ready for the season kick-off:

“I’ve had a great couple of weeks training with all of the lads. It has been all about getting the confidence of making a few good saves again. You can train when you’ve been injured, but the best test is always to get back out there, and train again. I’ve just been focusing on the game and making saves. I’ve been training hard to get back in time. “Everything has worked to plan so far. The schedule I’ve had with the physios has worked well. It’s been spot on. They kept me back at one stage because the training was going well, but it’s all about the new season now.”

While Krul is confident of his availability, Pardew was a little more tentative when discussing his keeper’s fitness after the Dutchman missed 14 matches of the 2012/13 with a number of injuries. Given how crucial he is to the Newcastle cause, it seems likely that Krul will get the nod for the Etihad clash, with another 11 days left to step up his fitness:

“Looking at Tim, he’s been out for a long time. He is one of the best keepers in the world, so we want him up to speed. That means we have to be careful. We must make sure that he returns properly, and is fully fit for the season.”

Got money on it this year after getting pipped in the final week last season (it still hurts!)...

Getting there with my team but think I might be over-prioritising the DGW...

    Cech (Davis)

    Mert Toure Collins (McNaughton, Parr)

    Hazard Walcott Nolan Colback (Lucas)

    RVP Soldado Lukaku

Plan to swap Lukaku out for a budget option (probably JRod, maybe Crouch) for GW2
Then upgrade Colback or Lucas to Snoddy.

Problem is if Davis doesn't play (and Boruc did seem to grab the first choice at back end of last season), will be left with a poor GW3, with the Chelsea blank, Liv Utd and Spurs Arse games...

Any ideas? Is this a good plan?

      3 Chelsea sounds fine.

Midfield looks in trouble though. Lose Colback and Lucas. Pick Thomas or Kim then downgrade Soldado (too expensive a risk considering you're an RVP side).

I like the look of either Sturridge or Giroud.

You also need to find a way to get some City coverage.

You can't over-prioritise the DGW with Chelsea's two fixtures. Points galore, and it would be silly to miss out.

Your midfield looks weak, think you'd have to drop one of Soldado or RVP to get a good balance. Swap Soldado for J-Rod/Anelka perhaps, then upgrade one of your 4.5 midfielders to Snodgrass? You can then bring Soldado in for Lukaku after the GW1 or GW2 with your banked 1.5.

Also think there are better 4.5 options. I'd take a punt on Ravel Morrison personally but Thomas is the popular pick and will probably bring in better returns than Colback and Lucas.

      Get rid of Cech

If you want a Chelsea player - Ivanovic or Cole at the back - at least they have assist/goal potential. Cech will get you 12 points at the most.

Not sure I like either. A) has an awful strike force, although you'd obviously rotate the two lesser strikers dependent on fixtures, and B) has both Walcott and Giroud.

      B) If I had to choose, with Giroud > Lukaku or Walcott > Coutinho.

    Hazard, Walcott, Silva Snoddy, Mirallas

    Lukaku, Soldado, J Rod

Ivan to Zaba & Haz to Thomas & Lukaku to RVP before GW 3 is my first choice plan. Have plans to get Sturridge/Rooney/Giroud/Bony/City striker instead if someone sets the world alight.

    Question for the regulars:

I've been looking around for any discussion about whether a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 formation is more effective?

Does the formation you choose change based on the needs of each week or once you decide a formation do you try to stay consistent with it throughout the season?

I thought I remembered there being some discussion last season on this topic and the conclusion was inconclusive, just focus on offence & not defense.

In light of us all trying to find the "perfect" team for WK 1, I thought it would be appropriate to visit the topic again.

Usually it's been 3-4-3, last season 3-5-2 had its moments.

This year it comes down to benching a 5 Gayle or a 4.5 Thomas (not necessarily those 2 but that's the cheapest playing fodder) and then being able/forced to play a 6m mid or fwd - and finding one that you're happy to play every week.

Last year we had Sterling forcing our bench mid to starter...

I have a midfielder and a striker that I'd usually rotate on form/fixtures so some weeks I'll play a 3-5-2 and some other weeks a 3-4-3. Don't really have a preference on which formation is most rewarding.

BAPs look like they may favour midfielders over strikers this season though, so perhaps 3-5-2 would be the better formation.

        Chesney, Harper
        Terry, Kompany, Collins, Shaw, Brayford
        Hazard, Oscar, Silva, Walcott, Thomas
        Soldado, Sturridge, Anelka

        So if you compare:

        Kompany > Toure
Shaw = MTurner (simply for rotation that I've changed this)
        Silva > Snodgrass
Thomas < Kim (slightly and unimportant)
        Soldado < RVP
        Sturridge > Lambert

Is Terry nailed on? If not I need to find 0.5m to upgrade Terry to Cole. What my best bet:

    A. Foster->4.5m (already have Boruc)
    B. Brady->4.5m Midfielder (I dont want to do this)
    C. Downgrade Soldado ->?? Dzeko, Hooper, RVW, Altidore, Bony, Giroud
    D. Sturridge-> Aspas (

    Already have Lukaku and Sturridge

My first draft, posted this yesterday, wondered what people's thought were or rate it out of ten if you can't be bothered to type much.

    Foster

    Kompany, Cole, Mertesacker

    Walcott, Hazard, Jarvis, Coutinho

    Dzeko, Soldado, Lukaku

    Subs: Boruc, Coleman, Baker, Thomas

Yes, I know my defence is expensive, but I'd rather call it "solid" 😛

Quite good. Solid defence.. won't be using subs too often I'd imagine.
Probably downgrade Cole after DGW and upgrade Jarvis.
Only concern is 3 DGW'ers and having to transfer out Dzeko/Jarvis

Thanks Gimli 🙂 The only subs I'd use are Boruc and Coleman. Depending on how the season goes and prices I'll upgrade.

Cole will be making way for a 4.5 - 5.0 defender. May keep Jarvis depending on West Ham's progress. They have a decent looking set of starting fixtures. Dzeko may be swapped out, as I'm keeping an eye on Carroll. I only have until tomorrow to make decisions, as I'm off to France for a fortnight tomorrow, and am probably taking a massive risk in leaving Bale out of my squad! He's essential if he stays!

I endorse the Kompany choice, only nailed on defender in the team with by far the best opening defensive fixtures, decent goal threat as well. However, going with him and without a Chelsea defender seems like asking for trouble.

I'm not going for a Chelsea defender. Cole is the only one I know will start both, and has little attacking threat.
Plus, I think Villa will probably score. Hull could even get one from a corner.

Anyone tempted by Rooney as a United player?

Not once has he or the club said anything about him leaving despite the 2 bids from Chelsea. Today he trains with the reserves as he wanted a more rigorous training session and he should feature for England against Scotland. All in all he looks to be doing everything right to get into shape for the coming season. It has been the press that have cast doubts on his future to sell papers.

    A fit Rooney for 10.5?

I'm concerned with the Anelka/Lukaku combo though
      - what if Anelka doesn't perform
      - You have Lukaku's blank to consider

that could be potentially 2 transfers already. I appreciate you're going for a strong mid though, but having a solid front 3 that's reliable is also the key. Seee whta I mean?
Maybe downgrade one of Mert or Zab to upgrade a striker?

Agreed my towards are a risk, I have always be one OK with a strong midfield and punted on attack until then team goes up in value then I upgrade. Was considering lapas instead of lukaku but worried about missing out on dgw. With clean sheets at a premium the last 2 seasons gotta have city coverage at the back merts could probably downgrade but which team/player is as good a chance of clean sheets?

i feel that having a chelsea defender gw1 forces you into a transfer in defence in gw1 which isnt ideal when early bandwagons are almost inevitably attackers (best chance to build value early). wouldnt toure +1.0 be just as good as terry especially considering the chelsea defense isnt decided. (then again toure may not be nailed on either)

why does it force a transfer? You have four other defenders and only need to play 3 of them. Chelsea - United week 2 could easily be 0-0. A Chelsea defender could easily hit a huge score that makes any future transfer worth it. It's the sort of thing you have to gamble on in this game.

Toure is nailed on to start the season, the only thing that will change this as the season progresses is if we ship Skrtel out and bring on in but even then BR will want a few weeks of training before making a change........this may all change again if Barca don't sign Luiz and step up their interest in Agger however.

JROD vs LAMBERT - A huge number of RMT's are including JRod this season but I just wanted to give my two cents on the issue.

I think that Jrod has been a touch over-hyped on FFS in through the pre-season and because of this Lambert has been massively over looked. We are talking about the 3rd highest scoring striker from last season at a mere 7.5m. Yes there is always a risk of SSN but he has worked his way through every tier of English football and so that is a much smaller risk than it to an English player than it is to foreign ones. Many are hyping up the performance of JRod as the season progressed but yes while he did improve, as he only scored once in his first 8 starts and none in his first 7 sub appearances, Lamberts form also improved as the season progressed, scoring 9 of his 15 goals from GW19 and onwards. In short Soton improved massively mid-late season and so naturally so did both of their strikers but Lambert always remained the main man in term of game time, field position and set piece responsibility.

Soton's opening 6 home games in the first 11 GWs are SUN, WHU, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL. Even the good teams there don't travel well and other than Liv and ManU away the other fixtures should see a Soton team that has been very well invested in over the summer off to a flyer.

I am not saying that JRod is not a good punt at 6.0m as I think he will score points (not as many as Crouch imo) but by including him you are effectively ruling out the best sure thing value up front by some way in Rickie. 1.5m extra spend for me looks like being worth 60-80 pts and when many are taking even bigger punts on the likes of Lukaku, Dzeko and even a reserve OOP massive potential for rotation in the form of Aspas all for practically the same money he may not be a differential in the grand scheme of things but compared to the educated players that you are actually competing with then a chance of being a differential in your private leagues.

Good post. Lambert is an extremely strong option. I think, unless Anelka hits form, that most of the budget forwards are not a great price point to have in the team, as there's so much less choice compared to a huge amount of options from 7.5 and up.

Cheers Baines, when I look at Anelka I am trying not to look at the last two season of his form but instead focusing on how Clarke used Long last season and even when Lukaku was bang on form Long was still coming in and starting games and so with a very much aging Anelka I really can't see too much game time from him and I am looking at WBA as strong relegation candidates this season as they have not improved in the summer and under Clarke's performances alone last season they would have already started league football this season!

Wally for me, not for the -0.5m but I think that Wenger's "spending" this summer will massively benefit Wally as he will get game time up front through the season as well as being nailed on one flank.

And I have said it before and I will say it again SURELY they will buy a striker by the end of the window though.
