PlayON – The FFS Strategy Guide

As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thomas a doubt, but will likely just be on your bench.

Terry likely to play one, not both. Same with Lukaku.

Not a Giroud fan, but he has been okay in pre-season.

      No major red-flags though.

Any Villa here? I had Tonev in my team but took him out as Lambert was giving mixed messages about his fitness for the start of the season but just saw another Lambert quote saying he was delighted with his contribution during the Malaga game. Got an assist too.

    Will he start the season?

I would be keen to know as well. I think Tonev is a noce little diamond in the rough - this year's Rah Sterling - and with a DGW to start he was nailed on for me. Lambert's comments were the first I heard he was struggling for fitness. I am guessing unlikely to feature 180 mins.

I think he will start but unlikely to play the full 90 over the 2 games. Irrespective of the DGW he is a decent long term pick though. He's my solitary Villa player this season (and yes, I'm a AV fan)

RMT this please - Gonna WC after GW2:

    Mignolet
    Terry - Koscielny - Mertesacker
    Hazard - Walcott - Couthino - Snodgrass
    Benteke - Soldado - Lukaku

Terry out after GW1 for City def.

By WCing after GW2 I think I can maximise my points the first 3 GW (plus no hits), protect TV by shipping out DGWers and gain TV by picking up bandwagons with my WC.

    Thoughts?

How does this plan sound like?

    Boruc foster
    Coke ward Chester murner mbiwa
    Miralas Wally hazard coutinho koren
    Lukaku soldado dzeko

    Gw1: cole + hazard >> Dawson + lallana (-4)
    Gw2: Lukaku >> rvp

I think it's a good strategy, leaves 0.5m over incase of price changes
I get rvp when in gw3, would have rather preferred gw2 when they play @home
Worried that I miss bandwagons as I have my transfers laid out to get rvp

Or shd I just start with rvp? Only diff being I won't have coutinho but rather lallana from the start

So think baring any big transfers this week im set, how does this look

    Cech - Boruc
    Coleman - Toure - Garrido/Collins - Amoribieta - Dawson
    Walcott - Hazard - Silva - Mirallas - Kim
    Sturridge - Anelka - Benteke

Leaves me £1m in the bank.

GW1 transfer will be Cech to Foster giving me £2.5m to upgrade Anelka and/or Coleman if needs be having seen how they start.

I like having the three £9-£9.5m midfielders as it allows you to play the fixtures and form using Michu, Coutinho, Gerrard, Fellani, Navas, Kagawa, Lampard types. Up front a more moderate front trio can be adjusted without sacrifice elsewhere to include Berba, Soldado, Negredo, Giroud, Bony and the like.

First time i've tried spreading the budget wider across the team rather than rely on one heavy hitter in each of the three outfield areas with weaker supporting players. Hopefully reduces reliance on one or two each week and makes it easier for transfers between form players in that tier below the marquee guys.

Haven't seen anyone on Andreas Weimann (6.0m). Not a bad shout for a short-term DGW punt over Anelka? Gives a week or two to assess the budget forward landscape before jumping on the biggest bandwagon before GW3.

3 goals in pre-season and was very good towards the end of last season when Villa picked up their game.

    Thoughts?

Personally I think Weimann could have a breakout year for the exact reason that Villa have improved behind him, he must have improved over the off season (still very young) and Benteke is still his main partner in crime.

I think he's worth it only if you leave money in the bank for the first week, and only if you don't take Benteke. If they have a dry 2 games, you're looking at 8 points between the two of them, and you'll probably have to take a hit to get one out (just making assumptions that you have chelsea assets as well). Taking that hit leaves you with only 4 points to the positive, which really is just 2 points per player for the double gameweek. Hopefully they both played 60 minutes in each game and didn't get carded too!

Personally I have Benteke only for this reason. I would take both, but I don't want to take the hit to get one out, and Benteke is involved in almost every goal scored by Villa. Or at least it seems like that! If he does terribly and FISO tells me his score is going to drop, it's a very easy transfer in GW2 to another 8 - 9.5 point striker.

Hey guys, what do you think of Negredo as FPL prospect for City's first 3 easy gameweeks? I know some people will say Dzeko because he's cheaper but what if price is irrelevant- who is better to have?

I then have a plan to upgrade to RVP for GW4 vs. Palace at home.

    Cheers

If price is irrelevant then whoever is going to get the most minutes. Unfortunately we can't tell that until the season is under way but pre-season seems to suggest Dzeko is the man at the moment. Unsurprising really as a new manager implementing a new system is likely to prefer the players accustom to the league in my opinion rather than the unknown.

If Dzeko starts and scores a few it's his place to loose but a slow start and I think we'll see Negredo given plenty of chances.

Defence a little weak as is the bench but an insane front 7. The problem is there is always a budget player that has an insane season and will match obe of the big boys freeing up a lot of cash for a more rounded team. Last season was full of riches Snodgrass, Michu, Fellaini, Lambert and Puncheon toba certain extent. I also remember Adam and Ireland having great seasons. I think you'd be better off taking a punt on this years new budget friendly hero whoever that may be and strengthening the bench and defence.

    Silva - Walcott - Mirallas - Hazard - (Thomas)
    Soldado - Sturridge - Lukaku

    Pros:
    - Well balanced
    - Ratio between nailed on's and punts is good imo

    Cons:
    - With no funds in the bank I am not able to upgrade Lukaku after GW1. If Lukaku performs bad, his value will sink like a stone while e.g Giroud's will increase. Not able to jump on that one.
    - One of the keepers not playing.
    - Thomas in midfield?

Anything else to add to the lists? Really appreaciate any comment to the team.

I would bring in Kim and Koren as a rotation most likely and drop Thomas. I don't see any value in midfield until you get up to Snoddy and with Anelka up front you will need a bench player who always plays in midfield.
