The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

The Knee Jerk returns in a new, digestible format. An instant response to the matches or matches of the day, offering a quick appraisal of the protagonists and dilemmas posed.

Day one, and already Fantasy managers find themselves re-addressing their “big decision”. Conveniently, a precocious talent on Merseyside may just offer a ready-made solution.

The Game Changer

It was clear that the decision on Robin Van Persie would again split Fantasy Football managers down the middle. Owned by 43% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, there were vast waves of support for the argument that his huge 14.0 price tag was too much of an obstacle, that value could be found elsewhere to compensate for his undoubted consistency.

That might still be the case, as Christian Benteke and Danny Welbeck demonstrated, but Van Persie’s superb brace at the Liberty this evening will have prompted early doubts.

Those without Van Persie must now decide whether to remain firm and back their initial policy or consider extensive emergency surgery to acquire him. Should Van Persie return again at home to Chelsea, then big investment could arrive over the international break ahead of the delicious Old Trafford clash with Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4.

If 14.0 looked too much this morning, we can only imagine where Van Persie will be in a few weeks if he shows that acclaimed consistency.

Van Persie really is the biggest test of the “jerky knee”.

The Underused

There was every chance that Ross Barkley would benefit from Darron Gibson’s likely absence in the Everton midfield, and so it proved.

The 19-year-old capped what was described by Roberto Martinez as an “outstanding performance” with a sweetly struck goal to hand the Toffees the advantage at Carrow Road. While that was eventually surrendered to a debut strike from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Barkley had done more than enough to have us Fantasy Managers take notice.

Barkley is owned by less than 2% of FPL managers and yet, at just 4.5, offers obvious appeal as a fifth midfielder for those now frantically looking for a route to recruit Van Persie.

Can he retain his starting role? It’s perhaps doubtful but in Martinez he’s playing under a manager who will give young talent a stage to impress. Barkley will surely start at home to West Brom next weekend and that might just be good enough for plenty of Fantasy managers.

The Selection Poser

The absence of Robert Snodgrass in today’s Norwich lineup was a bitter blow. According to Chris Hughton, a groin problem kept him out of the reckoning and allowed new signing Nathan Redmond to sparkle. Hughton did indicate that Snodgrass’ problem is minor, having been “touch and go” for today’s clash. The Norwich boss also stated that the Scot would have started over Elliot Bennett, offering some reassurance that Redmond’s performance will not be a cause for further doubt for Snodgrass owners.

The Norwich City lineup does create further issues, however. Steven Whittaker’s strike underlines his case to retain his start at right-back, although we can surely expect Seb Bassong to earn a recall once fully fit. It remains to be seen if club captain Russell Martin will oust Whittaker at full-back, or whether Michael Turner will eventually come under threat.

Arsene Wenger would love such options. With injuries to Kieran Gibbs and Bacary Sagna, coupled with Laurent Koscielny’s dismissal, the Gunners rearguard is now in tatters. Already deprived of Thomas Vermaelen, Wenger looks set to a patched up back four to face Fulham next weekend. Those who invested in Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczęsny will already be considering an exit route.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i had rvp in my team for a long time but chanced the squad a couple days ago to a non-rvp team. i did some calculations and noticed that the rvp team outscored the one i have now by 2 points. conclusion: football is a team game.

fair point, don't think i'm getting him either. it's just too much work to get him in plus so many strikers already shown they can score big this season. only worry is that he's the only player worth having from ManU.

I remember keepers saving penalties last season and having a stormer and getting no bonus.

Goalkeepers should definitely be rewarded highly for saving penalties. I know he conceded the rebound, but when you're doing based on statistics, it's difficult to judge that.

Should they bring back the Bonus Point Judges of 3+ years ago?

Ladies and Gentleman, how are we all?

I have an apology to make, as a Villa contributor.

I was very critical of managers selecting Baker, expecting both Clarke and Okore (when fit) to take precedent at centre back and Luna and Bennett at LB. The fact he only got 17 minutes is beside the point, I got that wrong.

Im my defence, i did put forward an equally strong case for the Benteking and Luna as a good option for attacking points from the back.

Hope everyone had a terrific first FPL day of the season!

                Thanks Declan,

Delighted with the result. Felt top half was possible going into the season but after today i think its probable. Just have to keep the main players fit, and Benteke is crucial.

Nice score, Ive got a 51 side with effectively 9 to play including the double captaincy. fingers crossed for a big chelsea win vs Hull, never got to a 100pt week.

We have a few of us who represent Villa on this site so we're well covered. I'm not a Baker fan myself but it wasn't nailed on that he'd start so it's fair enough to say what you did.

The fact that Clark came on over Okore when Baker got injured shows he's not match fit, so this definitely is not a sign that Baker is favoured.

Also, imo Vlaar could be in trouble. A few fans think he shouldn't be in the team, and he cocked up today with the goal and should've been sent off.

Okore and Vlaar for me though, all day.

Very excited about the Okore Beast. High hopes nailed to him.

I like Bakers enthusiasm, and he must have sliding tackles 20 on champ manager, but I see Clarke as a more intelligent defender and Vlaar has that experience we lack.

I'd see it (optimistically) as: Okore, Vlaar, Clarke, Baker once all are fit and settled.

Shees that over-commit on Rosicky for the 1st goal was u14 f team stuff - shocker. If Kos was sent then he should defintely have gone. The officiating was terrible! The yellow for the Villa player in the Oxlade-Chamberlain injury was woeful
