Moving Target

Moving Target – Darren Bent

Fulham boss Martin Jol added to his options up front last week by acquiring Darren Bent from Aston Villa on a season-long loan, with a view to making the deal permanent at the end of the current campaign. The 29-year-old’s arrival continues a summer of restructuring that has seen Jol target experience campaigners, with the likes of Maarten Stekelenburg, Fernando Amorebieta, Adel Taarabt and Scott Parker also added to the Cottagers’ ranks:

Jol had recently admitted he was desperate to find a solution to his striking problems, with far too much reliance placed on Dimitar Berbatov to deliver. Beating off the challenge of Crystal Palace and Newcastle, the Fulham boss was delighted to land his man:

“Darren Bent is a striker I have always admired. He has shown in the Barclays Premier League that he is composed and clinical in front of goal but, even if he is not scoring, he is involved in some good link-up play, creating opportunities for his teammates. I’m delighted that he has joined us, he gives us pace up front and I am confident that he will add to our goals scored tally this season.”

The History

A product of the Ipswich Town youth system, Bent’s career got underway back in 2001. After scoring 48 goals in 122 appearances across four seasons in the top-flight and Championship, he was snapped up by then-Premier League Charlton in June 2005. His eye for goal flourished at the Valley, with 31 goals and an assist in just 68 appearances catching the eye of Tottenham, with the north London outfit shelling out £16.5m for his services in the summer of 2007.

Bent’s time at the Lane proved frustrating, though. With 28 of his 60 appearances coming courtesy of the subs’ bench, he notched 18 times and provided seven assists before Harry Redknapp sold him off to Sunderland in July 2009. A first season on Wearside was hugely successful – installed as the Black Cats’ first-choice forward, Bent started all 38 league matches and racked up 24 goals and four assists. Having produced eight goals and an assist over 20 appearances in 2010/11, Bent moved again, making his way to Villa during the winter transfer window.

Bent’s time at the midlands got off to a strong start. Up and running with nine goals in 16 matches, his prospects dipped with the arrival of Alex McLeish in 2011/12 – he gathered nine goals in 22 games but his season came to an abrupt end after sustaining a knee injury. With McLeish gone and Paul Lambert installed in the Villa hotseat, Bent’s chances were dealt a further blow by the arrival of Christian Benteke. Playing second fiddle to the Belgian, Bent mustered a mere sixteen appearance, with eight off the bench, and found the net just three times in his final year in the midlands. On the international stage, the 29-year-old has produced five goals and an assist over 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Bent’s arrival at the Cottage could, potentially, hand Fantasy managers a viable mid-price contender for their three-man frontlines over the season ahead. Coming in at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he is likely to be fielded as the most advanced forward in Jol’s 4-4-1-1 formation and with a security of starts seemingly on the cards, will surely be targeted once his match-sharpness is up to scratch.

The downside, however, is the likely effect on Dimitar Berbatov’s potential. The Bulgarian thrived as Fulham’s main forward in 2012/13 – with Bryan Ruiz supplying the creativity from behind, the former United man notched 163 points in FPL last term but he now looks set to drop into “the hole” in order to accommodate Bent. As we saw last year, when a hamstring injury kept Ruiz on the sidelines for a number of weeks, Berbatov’s Fantasy returns took a real turn for the worse when moved to a more withdrawn berth and, while his spot-kick duties offer some solace, there’s no doubt his appeal will lessen if Bent cements a first-team place.

Ruiz’s prospects looks even more concerning. Some had fancied the Costa Rican as a decent budget option but the expected shake-up should force him into midfield, with a role on the right flank looking the likeliest scenario, with Adel Taarabt operating on the opposite wing. The likes of Damien Duff, Ashkan Dejagah, Alex Kacaniklic and Pajtim Kasami may have to settle for bench-warming duties if such a scenario transpires, as Jol freshens up his options on the flanks.

An unused sub in last Saturday’s win over former club Sunderland, Bent may be introduced from the bench over the next couple of matches as he builds up his fitness. With a fortnight’s international break already on the horizon, he’ll be afforded plenty time to bring his sharpness up to speed and potentially come into consideration when domestic action resumes mid-September. From Gameweek 4 onwards, Jol’s side have four enticing fixtures from the following five which will offer the new boy the chance to prove his worth – home games against West Brom, Cardiff and Stoke, allied with a trip to Palace, could well have the bandwagon rolling before long.

I'm thinking this. If I get a hint at him starting this week, I may take a punt against a depleted arsenal backline. He has a good scoring record against the gunners.

So you're taking a hit on a player who :-

      -has had no pre-season.
-is proven to be a slight fitness liability.
-isn't fit enough to last 90 mins at the moment.
-isn't 100% guaranteed to start with Jovetic, Negredo and Dzeko lurking(albeit he is MOST likely to start, but not 100% guaranteed).

All of this for a whopping 11.0 and a -4. In GW 1. Come on, you're better than that.

Good effort! I still can't look beyond Aguero as my captain for the next couple of weeks though and that should be worth -4.

He is a good captain option, but worth getting a -4 for? You could just go Cole>Murner this week and get in Aguero the week after. Besides, its not like many people can afford to being him in in a single GW(unless they do something silly like do RVP>Aguero) without reshuffling, so a price hike looks very unlikely at the moment. And by the end of next week, Pellegrini's striking options should be a little clearer, plus Aguero should have more match fitness by then. I really want him too, and will probably get him soon, but taking a -4 seems too wild and knee-jerky post GW1.

          I jest a little.

I never expected to start the season to be honest. But a little like Robles at Everton and Mannone at Sunderland he hasn't been drafted in purely as a number 2, but to challenge for the number 1 jersey. It's Jussi's to lose, but if Adrian impresses he could nick it

      B, Dzeko.

Ivanovic could easily pick up a cleanie or nick a goal, and is more sure of starting, IMO. Whereas Lukaku is at a higher risk of not starting..

Anyone considering triple City (Zab-Silva-Dzeko/Aguero) for the next few games?

With the former two being 99% nailed on and Dzeko probaby great VFM for the next few, might not be a bad idea no? (car - HUL - sto)

When does everyone think Lukaku's fall in price will be? With a Teams Selected by percentage of 18.9% from the 2,622,246 players in the game we find 495,406 are currently in ownership of the Chelsea striker, furthermore 51,244 people have dispatched him from their team and with a mere 1,435 people bringing him in, Lukaku gives a figure of 10.05% loss in ownership ultimately meaning an imminent drop in price perhaps in the next few hours

That's not my point, I agree with you though, it's too early to get rid of him but as a sub in gameweek 1, facing man utd gameweek 2 and a blank gameweek 3, their decision is fairly justified, I don't fancy having a team value of 99.9m at this stage of the season to be honest, could be shipping him soon if he begins to approach 60,000 Transfers out

Bent? Not sure, he was fabulous a few years back. I'd wait another week before using your WC, if you can. ( a 4.0 GK or a nailed on 4.0 Defender might emerge). Plus Coutinho and Sturridge kind of overlap at individual high prices.

Praised highly by Pelegrini last night, got Man of the Match, could have scored at least 3 times and faces Cardiff, Hull and Stoke in his next 3 games, for 7.5m he's well worth the punt

completely agree. The key to this complain (loud and loutish) is to spend the savings on a decent fifth mid,... not a two pointer 4.5 mid.

Of course he could and there's also the factor of Jovetic to make his debut which will more than likely be Saturday, Dzeko is certainly not guranteed 90mins game time per match but he has the class to do very well this season. You must remember he scored 14 goals as a sub last season and scored 4 goals in pre season

Thanks to all you good folks on this site I feel like I'm doing pretty well on my work's leagues (SUN and FPL). I'm on 71 in a FPL H2H league (£5 in winner takes all) with Lukaku, Hazard(c) and Cashley and am 13pts ahead of everyone in my league (mostly RvP(c) teams).

This is my GW1 team :

    Migs

    Kolo , Kompany , Cashley(vc)

    Coutinho , Hazard(c) , Silva , Rosicky,

    Soldado , Giroud , Lukaku

    - Marshall , Brayford , Murner , Cabral -

    My options:

    1) Stick Brayford in place of Kompany, make the Lukaku transfer. Hope Cardiff don't get spanked by Man City and my new striker does well.

    2) Transfer Kompany out for Zab/Clichy, then decide to play with Lukaku up front for the Man Utd game or with a 5 man midfield containing Hazard. Worry about off-loading Lukaku after GW2.

    3) Being that the H2H is for money and I'm likely to finish this GW pretty far ahead of my opponent/rest of league (my opponent has Schurrle and Lukaku in his team though). Take the points hit to transfer out Lukaku and Kompany.

Just been have a flick around the members area. For those of you looking for a 4.5m midfielder and have been burned by Morrison (no minutes) or have defensive minded players who won't get forward, what about these stats:

    Cabral at Sunderland vs Fulham

87 total touches (only 15 MID more involved) so he seems to be in the thick of Sunderland's play
5 goal attempts (only Lampard had more) is a very high rate, not sustainable but no fluke either (none on target but I'm hoping that was a once off :)). He will get forward and have attempts all season.
Nailed on for 90 mins every week.

    What's not to like?

    Afternoon gentlemen.

Isn't it a tiny bit strange that FPL still gives assists still for shooting straight at the keeper or being fouled for a free kick, while no longer giving assists for deflected crosses like Dzeko's last night? Not saying they made a mistake last night, but when they wrote the rules

If anything, Dzeko contributed more to Silva's goal than Aguero did to Yaya Toure's by being randomly fouled out there.

Not that it really matters, ehrm.

I'm very intrigued by the idea of going with 3 super strikers, and weak mid, and a stout defense, which will be rotated with the the cheap mids. I posted a ridiculous version with no premium midfielders earlier. This is slightly better, though it the mids still might be too weak.

    Boruc -- Westwood
    Zab -- Terry -- Clyne -- Coleman -- Toure
    Wally -- Mirallas -- Brady -- Cabral -- Thomas
    RVP -- Aguero -- Soldado

Brady/Cabral/Thomas is obviously very weak, but most weeks only one of them would play, and some weeks none of them would play.

I was just musing over the idea this morning..from the early trends of the BPS - it seems that's the way to go. But i think i'll give it a few weeks to see how things goes (1GW is too small a sample)

You mids are definitely weak tho

Ive already swapped dzeko for lukaku. Not prepared to accept a price drop.

My front three is now dzeko soldado and lambert. City, spurs and shampton's next few games are very good so i should see some return from my strikers.

May bring in silva for hazard with my free transfer wk3 and stick ivanovic on bench. Made too many transfers last year costing me points.
