The ScoutCast – Episode 111 – Bung

There are no brown envelopes in sight; this “bung” is firmly placed in my nasal passages as I clamber from my man-flu grief pit to sit alongside Granville and take my Gameweek medicine. After seeing me off by 21 points, it’s only fair I gave my co-host his moment of glory, regardless of being short of match fitness.

Somehow we end up arguing about Robin van Persie once again, before taking a gander at the bandwagons rolling and preview the weekend’s action the only way we know how: by rambling endlessly and singling out some dubious player picks along the way.

Would you wildcard for gw4 if this were your team?

    Boruc
    Coleman, Collins, Nastasic
    Mirallas, Silva(c), Walcott(vc), Michu
    Lambert, Sturridge, Soldado

(Mannone), (Toure), (Brayford), (R.Morrison) 1.5 itb

I would only be changing 4-5 players? I could do Mirallas to Nolan and Lambert to Benteke(c) for a hit gw4 instead?

lol I miss all the sunday games, always. Sadly those are usually the best games. Its even worse with Spurs in Europa, because it means ALL their game are sundays. It comes with the job, I really can't complain when its a 'higher calling' kinda thing.

Potentially that. I really fancy Chelsea defenders, but at the same time that extra cash in the bank might be useful.

I mean we held out a CS in our toughest fixture of the season (defending wise). Am I mad to think we can keep more than 20 CS this season?

you are not bad to think youll get 20 cleanies....you might be mad to think ivan wont be benched for a lot of them. Just too many options back there.

Also, yes, it was your toughest fixture, but United wasn't really trying to score, either.

I agree that chelsea will be the best defense this year, so its a bargain if they are nailed on, but Ivan isn't.

Obviously, if you are gonna take a hit, you want it to be someone who frees you from having to play chester this week. That means its one of those 3 on your bench. I agree with Lamps' value, so I'm thinking Ivan. But at the same time, a hit for a defender is horrible.

Thanks man, that reaffirms my belief about our defence that I'm not biased after all

See I for one think Jose will start Ivano in most games bar occasional rests and his versatility helps. Say he starts 80% games, I'd even take 16 CS for the season.

              31*2 + 16*4 = 126
              Already on 1 goal, I'd say a min of 4 goals = 20
              Few assists too = say 2 = 6
              Bonus = 15 approx

Gives a conservative estimate of 160+ points at > 5 PPG

I suppose I cannot argue that at all. Perhaps if I make some change I'll pick up Ivan again. Your reasoning here is very sound, even with the bias.

Like I said, I think you can't have too much ego over the United game. neither team cared to try to win that one. nevertheless, I can't see Chelsea conceding too much.

The worrying bit is that his immediate fixtures are pretty poor (which if you go by United game logic should work in my favor haha).

                  eve FUL tot nor

Though you have to consider the Mourinho factor. Jose hates losing games and is a sucker for not conceding goals. Been a priority throughout his career.

Having said all that, can you see any point in me getting rid of Lamps for someone? Any mid I move towards will be a punt as none have really come to the fore.

I like your Michu idea the more I looked into it. Their fixtures really improve soon! Nolan is another option, but their fixtures actually get worse soon. Mirallas, of course, if he shows any life at all. If not, it almost seems worth it to go for a cheapie like brady or take a mid-risk like paulinho. Midfield is a big pickle, right now.

honestly, until Lamps gets rotated, I dont even think I'll consider getting rid. You've really talked me into that one.

I fancy Michu but I'm starting to think the new bonus system doesn't like mids much. Don't understand why they get lesser BPS when they score, as compared to a striker. Undervalues Michu.

Hence why I'm thinking big defs and solid strikers, along with consistent mids is going to be the formula this season.

Put it this way it'd be silly to get rid of the highest scoring mid in the game so far haha

Careful with making too many sweeping judgments on BPS at the moment. Remember there has been a strangely high number of clean sheets lately. Wait until the season becomes a bit more normal, then well see who points favor.

I agree with the Lamps things. If youre gonna take a hit, it has to be Ivan, for my money. Helps you not have to start Chester, too.

But thats if you are gonna take a hit ,and you really don't have to. Just be ready for a 0 or a 1 from Chester. Even that's a maybe with City looking so bad last weekend.

See...if I get Collins, there's a chance I may get CS and opening up options for next week

Plan A - Michu for Snoddy
                        Plan B - Rooney
                        Plan C - RVP for a hit

How are you gonna afford RVP? Still planning on doing Lamps>JWP and Soldado>RVP?

rooney still not an option IMO. Too much rotation.

                        Michu for Snoddy works ok.

Ivan > Collins, Snoddy > 4.8 and Sold > RVP

Don't think so. Rotation from who though? Kagawa?

I think Rooney played really well in both games he featured in, Moyes likes him a lot. Can't see him being dropped. Moyes likes stability and someone in the whole who can head the ball and a good passer at the same time (Tim Cahill, Fellaini). Rooney fits the bill.

All these options will only be open if I do Ivano > Collins for a hit

                        What do you reckon now?

Snoddy for a 4.8? like who? And do you really want two cheapie mids?

rotation from Kagawa and if Moyes wants Welbeck to play centrally, as he did so well against swans.

We say Moyes likes stability...but remember, thats before he actually had OPTIONS.

I mean, Ivano Collins fixes the problem this week, letting you bench chester even if it IS a defender for a hit.

I honestly think I'm doing ok without RVP. I'm ok with not havign him for now. (I know thats famous last words for you last year) I think theres money in the Soldado/Benteke/Studge frontline, even though I know it would be a straight upgrade. I also just don't like the two cheapie mids.

If I'm you, I think I might take the hit, but I don't think I'd go RVP. too early to write off all mid-price midfielders.

flexibility is big at this stage. gotta catch the first midfielder who catches fire, or get RVP if necessary. hits hurt though, for sure, but your team will look good if you go Ivan>Collins. I know I wish I had collins right now.

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaate hits. Why in the world would I flaunt that?

I have actively decided that I will make early transfers this year. Injuries are too rare to spook myself out of good moves. Yes, it will cause a hit occasionally, but I think the team value makes it worth it. I got burned on it this week, but I like the look of my team. I just don't like how much harder it will be to catch you in the geezer league.

naaaah Our teams are way too much alike. If Dezko and Mirallas bombs we'll be pretty much even, and then my hit will give you the cushion. If Dzeko runs wild, sure, I'll kill you, but he may not even start.

Gotta be silva. I believe if safe captains options first half of the year ,and taking risks the second half. Dezko if I was brave, but I'm not. Walcott is not an option, imo. Not enough form and Spiurs defense looks decent (now who has too much bias for their defense? haha)

Who I'm thinking as well. I don't have any other option though. Soldado (got a feeling he'll score again, Spurs strikers always score in NLD) if I'm brave

But i think you're right. The game is going to be very tight with both midfields tightened up. I fancy Spurs to knick a win actually.

                        Soldado is my VC.

Rule #1 of being a Spurs supporter is always be pessimistic because it helps the pain of disappointment. So as good as I feel about the Arsenal game, I can't get too excited.

You can have a super strike force and good defense with RVP and have a decent midfield thats the best you can do atm because the mids arnt firing and its hard to see who will emerge right now in the budget bracket 6-8.5m.

you could have something like this:

      Migs/Boruc

      collins..chester..coleman...fonte..Mbiwa

nolan...silva...walcott...HBA..barkley - possibly paulinho for HBA

RvP lambert Giroud - can have soldado/sturridge/benteke all within budget.

Only thing wrong is you cant get a big hitter in defense or more than 2 in midfield but the way the points are going you dont need a big hitting defender when you can get the extra bonus points from those clean sheets from a cheap centre back. None of the mids are firing atm but I feel walcott might do something this weekend and we might all have to find good budget mids that are regular rather than opt for rotated options from Che.

See, this is what I mean.

        Migs/Boruc - too expensive

Collins and Chester are OK but not thrilling. Mibiwa - no thanks. Fonte - is he a sure starter?

Barkley, HBA - absolutely no thanks. Paulinho - not with Lamela and Eriksson on the way.

Lambert under threat from Osvaldo and playing deeper. If Arse don't sign another striker Giroud will be knackered by November.

So, all in all not very promising.

If I go without RvP I can afford to spend more on defense but can see a lot of options for 5.5m:

    Ferdinand MUN
    Gibbs
    Mert
    Shaw
    Lescott
    Huth
    Rangel and more

Is ferdinand likely to get a run of games because at that price he's a bargain. Optionally i could spend 8.0m on a midfielder but doesant seem to be anyone in that bracket yet: can only see HBA and Paulinho for 7.0. Any Suggestions?

    Boruc
    Mbiwa Coleman Turner
    R.Morrison Silva Coutinho Walcott Wanyama
    Dzeko RVP

    Benteke Toure Ward

Not sure which defenders to play, all have equal chance IMO? Regardless, will have 11 playing as Ward will come IF R.Mor doesn't get game time.

Will Van Persie scoring/not scoring against Liverpool really matter? We've got enough data on RVP: He's an absolute stud, and could get a hattrick against Palace, he's also insanely expensive and has to convincingly outscore Benteke/Soldado/Sturridge to be worth it. I feel like we have a big enough sample size to know this without seeing him play Liverpool.

I suppose it would be good as far as seeing Rooney get on the scoresheet and hopefully wash away any questions about his role/playing time. But the RVP blank wouldn't be relevant to my decision personally.

Tends to score against the big boys. Only reason Chelsea was a blank was due to JM getting his tactics uber spot on. And Utd didn't have the class in other areas to cause an issue. I wouldn't be surprised if he scored, tbh

Is something like this going to be a template defense when we see folks using their WCs?

    Mignolet,4m
    Terry,Vidic,Collins,Chester,Burner

Looking at the points returns from defenders at the beginning of the season, it is safe to say that CBs are the way to go.

Getting coverage from the teams solid at the back will be important this season as CS usually results in 7-9 points for the CBs (BAPs usually follow).

Going cheap for a forward player to accommodate big defenders may not be that bad an idea as 15 CS for a defender in a season will mean a minimum of 7 points on average for a CS whereas you can not expect fifteen 7 pointer performances from a 6m mid or forward.

Coleman is a better option than one of Vidic or Terry in my opinion. I can see one of them. But having both of them would be a bit risky as they'll certainly be rotated throughout the season I think.

By using transfers to pick up players with good fixtures and form I believe you can expect fifteen 6-7 point performances from your 6m players. If we didn't have any transfers then you would probably be better off getting a big defender.

For that to happen you have to be abosolutely spot on with your trannies and get players before they hit that purple patch. Whereas with defenders you can select them and keep them for long time and get rewarded and not use your trannies as well.

I've got Hart, Zabaleta, Dzeko - Hull are abysmal going forward and City's record for keeping a clean sheet is much better at home.

The trouble with RVP is if I play him and dont (c) him then I'm damned if he misses and i'm damned if he's scores in a way.

        Walcott is another option.

I would need .4 extra next week to pull in Benteke if I brought in Silva this week. I'm dropping Hazard for someone, there just aren't any standouts besides him for this week...I'm really stumped. I'm worried that West Ham won't get too many vs. Stoke, I'm worried about HBA because Newcastle have looked like shit, and I'm worried about Yaya getting me a big ol' deuce.

If the Toon can sort themselves out, he'll be in the thick of the points. However, that may be the biggest 'if' i've ever typed out....

Hard to predict with Fulham's squad. I'd avoid for now

need to see how Jol fields the team with Berba & Bent both starting

if he does that, which he should

Would you wildcard this team GW4?

    Marshall Price
    Toure Rat Chester Burner Coleman
    Walcott Mirallas Coutinho Nolan Parker
    Soldado Benteke Aguero

    1.2m in bank.

Defence is pants...but could be fixed with a couple of transfers.

    cheers!

Thinking of. If i do, it'd be to swap out Marshall Toure Rat and probably Coutinho and Aguero > Mignolet, Terry, Collins, Silva and Sturridge

        defence is the main concern...

thanks. the risk is that i'll lose more value over the players i want to ship out (toure and Rat). Rat's already dropped 4.8...don't know why i even went in for him. Probably all those Collins injury mongers.

I love Kaka but have to admit that might be the case :\

I'd love if he came to the EPL and got some minutes he was such a good player in his prime

    Mid-price midfielder punts math:

    HBA > Taarabt

    most choices > HBA

except if Ba goes back to Newcastle and Pardew fired, then HBA = most choices
