Spot the Differential – Gameweek 3

As the minutes tick away towards the Gameweek 3 deadline, our weekly assessment of some overlooked Fantasy alternatives is rolled out again. We’ve a trio of wide men with favourable fixtures for your perusal this morning, with a Tyne-Wear duo and north London option all worthy of our attentions.

Hatem Ben Arfa

It’s hardly been the best of starts for Newcastle. A couple of games into the season and the Tyneside team have yet to register a league goal, continuing a run that has now seen them find the net twice in their last eight league matches.

If there’s one person capable of putting a smile back on Alan Pardew’s face, though, it’s Hatem Ben Arfa. The mercurial Frenchman climbed off the bench in the midweek Capital One Cup clash against Morecambe and immediately made the difference, setting up assists for both the Magpies’ late strikes.

With a home clash against Fulham this weekend followed by showdown against Villa and Hull, Ben Arfa may well finally deliver on the potential that has seen him register eight attempts on goal thus far. At 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (5.9 in Sky Sports and 3.5 in Sun Dream Team) and with a 4% ownership, the fleet-of-foot-Frenchman looks a decent short-term punt heading into the deadline.

Adam Johnson

The Sunderland winger is another whose statistics suggest he’s been a little unlucky not to pick up the points. So far, only five midfielders have created more goalscoring opportunities for team-mates that Johnson, while his eye for goal has produced five attempts without any degree of success.

Nevertheless, his displays hint he could be set for an upturn in Fantasy output as the former City wide man attempts to return to the form that harvested five goals and nine assists for the Black Cats last time around. A trip to Selhurst Park, where he faces a Palace side without a point to their name, affords Johnson the perfect platform to finally get his campaign up and running.

At 7.0 in FPL (7.4 in Sky Sports and 3.5 in Sun Dream Team) and 3% ownership, he could appeal to those on the lookout for a one-week punt ahead of the international break – with Arsenal, Liverpool and United in three of the following four, however, the upcoming schedule is far from encouraging.

Andros Townsend

The typically high-scoring north London derby brings the Tottenham wide man onto our radar this time around. Having dazzled in last week’s Europa League win over Dinamo Tbilisi, Townsend retained his starting berth against Swansea last Sunday and provided the assist for Roberto Soldado’s converted spot-kick.

With Aaron Lennon still likely to miss out due to a foot problem, Townsend looks set to be unleashed against Kieran Gibbs on the flank in Sunday’s showdown against Arsenal – given that the previous five Emirates encounters have harvested 30 goals, a goalless game looks highly unlikely.

A price of just 5.5 in FPL (4.6 in Sky Sports and 2.5 in Sun Dream Team) and ownership of under 1% makes Townsend a real under the radar option before Erik Lamela and the incoming Christian Eriksen stake a claim for starting roles in the attacking midfield positions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Double up on Shaw if you think Soton will keep a cleanie. More likely to get an assist than Jedinak too.

I'd actually go Nastasic if they were both fit. I don't trust Zaba to keep his spot once Richards is back and the BAPs system seems to be favouring CBs. The extra 0.7 is a bonus.

Walcott is one of the only mid options I have faith in at moment. Although I think Giroud is a good option up front, the problem is that there are equally good options up front from other teams that don't provide mid options. IMHO.

For everyone worried about Dzeko not starting I hope this helps.
Last season he played 32 games. He was subbed on 16 times (50%) and subbed of 7. Despite only playing 9 full games he scored 14 times, assisted 6 and missed 1 penalty.

With the new Baps system penalising wayward shots and favouring strikers who score, less time played with scoring goals might be a blessing in disguise.

I am not saying he is the best Captain choice, but in my humble opinion you want him coming on as a sub and causing havoc once the Hull defence has been battered a bit.

The race for 4th place is going to be so good this year, Spurs and Liverpool look like they could do some real damage this season and Arsenal will be there or there abouts as always, I still think Arsenal will edge it but it's going to be one hell of a contest, I wish there were 5 Champions League spots! 😀

Surely the point of having RVP is so he is (c) every week. I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO DO IT! Can't see anything other than a tight low scoring game v Liverpool.... Tottenham are tight this season so Im struggling to pick Walcott...Dzeko might not start....Silva not usually explosive.... Dilemma! Too hard a decision for a Saturday morning

Someone give me a good reason why Negredo will start over Dzeko, please! Otherwise I might just do Wally --> Dzeko (C) again. At the moment, I'm about 80% sure Dzeko will start. Why?

    - Personally, I think he has been the best over the last 2 games.
    - He scored last game, and the game was tied when he went off
    - Pelle continually praises him
    - Pelle said he will need to score to maintain his starting position - well he did that didn't he?

It's on Silva as it stands, more out of fear as I know all my rivals will (c) him. I've tried to be a smartarse the past 2 GWs and it's blown up in my face big time so far, so I may just be a sheep this week.

Yeah. I guess I think both will do well, only I think Dzeko's doing well is reliant upon him starting (though, we know this isn't the case with Dzeks).

The thing is, I wouldn't hesitate for a second before putting C on Dzeks if I knew for sure that he was starting.

Is top quality players starting their first full game against rubbish clubs a thing?

Always seems to get touted but I'm not so sure it's true.

Negredo needs gametime and he has scored 1 also and 1 against newcastle which was wrongly flagged.

Probably sell. Can't see him playing and then his place will be under threat when he returns if they get Sakho

    Team for this GW:

    Vorm
    Zabaleta - Hangeland - Collins - Coleman
    Michu - Walcott - Silva - Whittingham
    Giroud - Soldado

    Subs: Boruc, Brady, Chester, Benteke

    Thoughts? WC in play.

Thinking about going for a bit of a punt with my captain and going with Soldado

Only way for the NLD to be high scoring is for Arsenal to score first. Tottenham will be resolute in defence, suggested by their first two games and defensive choices.

    Walcott the exciting one.

    Silva, Kasami, Walcott, Mirallas

    Dzeko, Walcott, Soldado
