Scout Report – Erik Lamela

Last Friday was a busy day at White Hart Lane. Having earlier announced the signing of defender Vlad Chiriches, Tottenham broke their transfer record for the third time this summer with the acquisition of Erik Lamela from AS Roma. The 21-year-old arrives in north London for a fee reported to be in the region of £30m, topping the £17m and £26m outlays on Paulinho and Roberto Soldado respectively.

Having seen a deal for Willian hijacked at the last minute by Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas turned to the highly-rated Argentine as he splashed the cash ahead of Gareth Bale’s subsequent departure to Real Madrid. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Lamela is keen to make his mark after a couple of seasons in Serie A:

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a great move for me and I’m looking forward to doing my best for the team in every game. I like the English style of football, it’s very offensive and attacking and that’s how I want to play. I have to adapt to playing in the Premier League as quickly as I can.”

The History

A product of the River Plate youth academy, Lamela was offered a contract by Barcelona at the age of 12 but chose to reject the La Liga club and remain in his native country. Handed his debut back in June 2009, Lamela proceeded to play 36 league matches, producing four goals and six assists, but his club’s relegation from the Argentine top-flight saw the suitors circling.

Snapped up by Roma in the summer of 2011 for a bargain €12 million, Lamela’s first season in Italy was more of a settling-in period. From 29 appearances, he produced four goals and seven assists before stepping up considerably under the guidance of Zdenek Zeman last time out. Situated on the right of a front three, the left-footer racked up 15 goals and five assists over 33 league matches, with only four players – including former team-mate and Southampton new boy Pablo Osvaldo – scoring more Serie A goals in 2012/13.

On the international stage, Lamela has scored three goals in four appearances for Argentine U20s and has turned out for the senior side on three occasions.

The Prospects

Crucially for Villas-Boas, Lamela’s versatility affords him options in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. As mentioned above, he was deployed as an inverted winger on the right of a three-man frontline in his final season in Italy to huge success and with the Spurs boss adding the likes of Paulinho and Etienne Capoue to his options in central midfield, Villas-Boas has already rolled out a 4-3-3 against Swansea and Arsenal.

The likes of Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend will surely tumble down the pecking order in light of the Argentine’s arrival, with Lamela’s superb dribbling ability and creativity, allied with a penchant for cutting inside and letting fly from his favoured left foot, making him the hot favourite for a role on the right flank.

Alternatively, Lamela can just as easily be fielded in “the hole” behind a lone forward. While Paulinho impressed in the Gameweek 2 win over the Swans, the formation left Roberto Soldado stranded all too often up front, with Spurs lacking in creativity from central areas in both their last couple of league matches – a 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to solve such a problem and hand the Spaniard a little more support in attacking areas; boosting his appeal as he searches for his first league goal from open play.

While the number 10 role is Lamela’s preferred position, the subsequent signing of Christian Eriksen suggests the Dane has been acquired with this berth in mind but, of the pair, the Argentine’s greater adaptability may afford him more game time, with Eriksen likely to be more dependant on specific systems to flourish. Certainly, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s chances of remaining in the mix look slim – having been dropped for the last two matches, the Icelandic international may have to rely on cup appearances and game time off the bench in light of his manager’s summer spending spree.

Priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports, Lamela is set to pick up plenty interest over the international break as Fantasy managers reconsider their midfields after a lacklustre start by many of the big-hitters. With Soldado now up to 9.7 in FPL, the Argentine offers a cheaper route into Villas-Boas’ side ahead of a superb schedule which has Spurs rated top of our fixture ticker over the next six Gameweeks – home clashes against Norwich, West Ham and Hull, in addition to trips to Cardiff and Villa afford the north London club the chance to quickly bounce back after yesterday’s disappointing derby defeat to Arsenal.

    Quick fire round;

    1. Is Toure a huge rotation risk now due to new signings, get rid?

    2. Non RVP owners, besides being a bit anxious who is getting the armband?

    3. Which two GK offer value and good rotation? ( Have Foster currently who is crocked)

      3. i'm assuming u have foster + boruc? if so I have that same pair and i'm considering two options.

      a) play boruc every week. soton have nice fixtures (bar away trips to pool and united) between now and the 3rd intl break so it's not too bad imo
      b) find some money and upgrade foster to mig

REPOST from bottom of last page

TotalFPL did an excellent analysis of the key factors contributing to the new system.

    http://totalfpl.com/Articles/181/testing-the-key-factors-for-bonus-points-under-bps

    Their key findings were:

    1) Goals are definitely the main factor contributing to bonus points. Scoring 1 goal will yield on average 1.77 bonus points

    2) Centre-backs do have a better chance of getting bonus points, on average they have an 0.45 higher return from bonus points over their defensive colleagues when earning a clean sheet

For me the 0.45 bit is probably redundant until we have more data... wingbacks might be getting less crosses than typical, etc. The 1.77 is interesting - again though in higher scoring games with multiple scorers it'd be tough for all goal scorers to average 1.77

Hope they keep updating it to see how it goes

The CB thing doesn't really tell us much. It's comparing CBs to all other players. A centreback gets 1/2 a bonus point, holding all other covariates constant, compared to the rest of the population which includes fullbacks, midfielders, goalkeepers, and forwards. What I'd be more interested in would be looking at only defenders, and including a CB variable. That would tell us the predicted difference in BAPs between CBs and FBs, which is really what we care about.

Or am I misreading that? They say that CB do get an extra .51 over fullbacks but that's only true if only defenders are included in the regression.

Hmm, looking at the article it's unclear. From the regression output they posted, there's no evidence to back up their conclusion. But it's possible they did more regressions off screen to get their conclusions.

What is the consensus on mirallas then? falling really slowly so a max of a 0.1 drop b4 GW 4 so no real urgency to remove him. His been gettin into gr8 positions and taking shots and creating too.. but, he's been far too wasteful. Surely Deulofeu is knockin on the door but i doubt he'll be thrown in at the deep end vs Chelsea this week. I suggest keeping mirallas for one more week atleast b4 throwing him out.

I've come to the conclusion that wildcarding ahead of GW4 means you MUST put in RVP . . . I know all the arguements, and how much better the team looks without, but it's just so much easier to take him out than to put him in. If he blanks at home against Palace and W Brom, ok he goes - but if he goes ballistic ...

I planned for RVP in GW4 so can't change that now, or the sacrifices up to now will have been in vein.

Only thought is how the fixtures fall for your 2/3 of BArfa, Nolan & Brady. They all seem like home players and not great to play away from home.

Benteke for me, Giroud the week after. Newcastle are in a mess and Benteke is very capable of punishing them. Giroud has yet to really show a lot of form outside the Emirates (e.g. 5 shots against Tottenham versus 2 against Fulham, despite the gulf in defensive quality).

For £18m and undoubtedly high wages, there's no way Sakho isn't going to be first team.

Definitely worth saving compared to Enrique or Agger IMO.

Plus as a CB, more likely for bps once the clean sheet rolls in

Yeah, but I'd be wary of him being eased into the team as it may seem unfair to the other centre backs to axe one when they've been doing so well, Toure's been magnificent and Skrtel had Van Persie in his back pocket, they haven't conceded in three games, Rodgers may want to keep their form going, I wouldn't punt on Sakho just yet 🙂

Is Ozil really worth that little bit more than Walcott.

Walcott can be OOP potentially, and seems more of a goal-getter to me.

I was initially thinking that Ozil was essential, and if Walcott wasnt around then he would be, buy the presence of reliable Wally means it's tricky.

Would've been easier if he went to United 😛

      Hey Al. How you doing?

It looks like with assists being so much less valuable for BAPS you need goal-scoring mids rather than assisting mids. Özil is not that guy and Wally is. Case closed for me.

    Mingo / 4.0
    Vidic / Zabaleta / Coleman / Clyne / Collins

    Rooney / Sturridge / Giroud

Any thougts, or good to go ?

silva to walcott is a must!

I like rooney in there but wait and see if he'll play gw 4 or if he's out

and moses is not nailed on. right now he's competing with henderson, sterling, and aspas for two spots which isn't bad (I reckon he'll start) but once suarez returns he'll be competing with all 3 of those for one spot

also I might look to get a city defender in for zaba or vidic

        Thx for the reply, appreciated.

Roponey is conditional on fitness, i suppose. I'd probably go for Benteke if he were looking like not bing ready.

I presently have walcott in my team, but fancy some City attacking cover, and that's (Walcott > Silva) about the only way in

Moses is definitely a punt, that's tryue. Not sure what theplan is if he doesn't get starts, but Rodgers has been talking him up so we'll see. I have not seen anything of Liverpool this season to know whether Aspas will get the chop when Mr Nice is back in the team.

        City defender for Zabs?? .

Lampand too risky with Chelsea's midfield, Lamela could be great but still early. Moses also a rotation risk, and Rooney not back for a while, apparently his gash is huge. Pun, entirely intended.

Not sure about £9m for Lamela. He will need time to settle and I don't think one player will be key for Spurs this season, more of a team effort with points spread throughout the side.

Also Deulofeu is gonna be used as an impact sub for some time apparently and is perfect for everton as mirallas cant play more than 70 so he can gt taken off for Deulofeu then.
