Scout Scribbles – Rooney Shows His Scars

Wayne Rooney goes public with pictures of the head injury that casts major question marks over his availability for United’s game with Palace. Phil Bardsley returns to the Sunderland frame after the Black Cars lift the right-back’s suspension, Aaron Ramsey is the subject of Arsene Wenger’s praise, while Ian Holloway omits a couple of new signings from Palace’s 25-man squad for the season ahead:

Rooney Reveals Horror Show Injury

Wayne Rooney has taken to Facebook to reveal the extent of his head injury that will keep him out of England’s qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine. The grizzly picture of Rooney’s head wound, suffered in a training ground collision with team-mate Phil Jones, was accompanied with a statement from the United forward explaining his withdrawal from Roy Hodgson’s squad.

“Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the two games. There’s nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I’m sure people will see from these images the reason why I won’t be able to play.”

The Scout Says: Hardly pleasant viewing, it’s nonetheless clear from the images that Rooney’s injury is far from straightforward. Described by Theo Walcott as “like something from a horror film”, the severity of the wound will surely delay Rooney’s return to action and make him a real doubt for United’s Gameweek 4 home clash with Crystal Palace. Those considering Rooney as a viable altnerative to cover Robin van Persie’s potential against Ian Holloway’s side will likely have to set their sights elsewhere. While there is no confirmed length of absence, investment in Rooney as a Fantasy option has stalled until we know more.

Bardsley Back in the Black Cats Fold

Phil Bardsley has had his suspension lifted by Sunderland. Disciplinary action was taken against the defender after he appeared to mock his team-mates following the opening day defeat to Fulham via his Instagram account. Bardsley was subsequently suspended from playing duties but has now acknowledged his actions and looks set to focuse on a return to first team duties.

“I would like to apologise to the club and supporters for my comments made on social media. I understand how they may have been interpreted. I accept the punishment that has been handed to me by the football club and will now focus my attention and efforts on rehabilitation and regaining my fitness.”

The Scout Says: With new signing, Ondrej Celustka, settled at right-back so far this term, Bardsley faces an uphill struggle to edge his way into contention for a recall. Having said that, it’s always difficult to anticipate Paolo Di Canio’s thinking when it comes to his teamsheet, having witnessed wholesale changes over the opening Gameweeks. Celustka, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is currently a cheap route into the Sunderland rearguard but short-term investment is very unlikely given current form and, more significantly, a schedule that brings Arsenal, Liverpool and United to the Stadium of Light over the next four Gameweeks.

Ramsey Earns Praise as Diaby Steps Up Recovery

Arsene Wenger has switched attention away from new signing Mesut Ozil to focus on, arguably, Arsenal’s most accomplished performer this season, Aaron Ramsey. The Gunners boss has acknowledged Ramsey’s form, highlighting an increase in strength and finishing ability as the key components to his progress:

“He [Ramsey] has gained a lot of physical power in the last year, no longer struggling in challenges and duels but brushing opponents off and running away from them with ease. It’s a great feeling for a midfielder to do that. On top of that, he’s starting to score – something I always felt he was close to doing because he was often the next guy in the box. To have that in your locker as well is fantastic.”

Abou Diaby is another Arsenal midfielder in the news as he has broken his silence following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury back in March. Diaby has now stepped up his recovery and is looking ahead to knocking on the first team door.

“I’m working back to my best level and beyond. I want to catch the train and bring something to the team. That’s my objective.”

The Scout Says: Ozil’s arrival offers an obvious new asset in the Arsenal ranks, although Fantasy managers also need to assess the impact he will have on the players around him. Ramsey, in particular, could remain a midfield option and, with a 5.6 FPL price tag, would certainly warrant interest in a side boosted in confidence and scoring goals. It remains to be seen how Ozil’s arrival will impact on his starts. With MIkel Arteta’s return from injury and Jack Wilshere fully fit, Wenger would clearly have a wealth of options in the middle of the park. Certainly, Diaby’s ambitions may have to be tempered. It’s difficult to see an immediate route back into the side for the Frenchman.

Palace Omit New Signings

Crystal Palace have named their 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign, omitting summer signings, Stephen Dobbie and Florian Marange along with Aaron Wilbraham and Owen Garvan. The latter had started the previous three matches prior to the Sunderland victory, while Marange was yet to figure in the league following his summer move from Bordeaux. Ian Holloway signed 16 players during this recent transfer window.

The Scout Says: With so many new faces arriving at Selhurst Park, including what seemed a deadline day scramble, it’s perhaps not surprising to see names culled from the 25-man squad. Holloway’s options, particularly in wide areas, looks bewildering and it’s incredibly difficult to assess what his likely first choice starting XI will be. Fantasy managers who have already invested in Palace as a source of budget talent can now only sit back and hope that their assets remains intact but, with competition for starts all over the pitch, it’s clear it will take a number of weeks before we can run the rule over Palace’s potential with any real certainty. It’s worth noting that Under 21 players – such as Jonathan Williams – are available for selection over and above the 25-man limit; hence the youngster’s omission from the list.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why would Liverpool play Suarez wide? I just don't understand. He is surely more at ease in the middle and that is where Liverpool can benefit from him.

Much like Ronaldo when he played "on the wing" for Utd, I don't think Suarez's position is going to make much difference. He'll still be very attacking by dribbling into the box and shooting.

+1 he can do and go whereever he wants, and he is better there as his greatest skill is beating defenders, and Sturridge would be misutilised not centralized. But both Sturridge and Suarez are very skilled so can just switch positions during the game continuously and mix up defenders plans.

Agree, could be quite a fluid attacking style. Sturridge and Suarez linked well last season and I don't see why that wouldn't continue.

The whole front 4 will be very interchangeable, so rigid positions will be almost worthless. Sturridge drops out wide quite often to pick up the ball at the start of attacks, so Suarez would then take the CF position and vice versa.

This is how we will line out in most of our games this season also no one is nailed down to their position, They are all interchangable and will move around throughout the games.. No doubt Luis and Danny will share the points when both are on

Football isn't as ridged as set positions on the wing or defensive midfield anymore.
You've been watching too much sky sports where they still show teams as 4-4-2 (eg- Man City).
Not the case at all. A "free winger" is more likely with Enrique occupying a "wide" role down the left
Having Suarez come inside could hurt Coutinho's magic though

You want to get rid of foster as toure.
Campbell I don't like as a pick but I am guessing you knee jerked him in.

I'm currently torn between 3 wc teams, 2 with RVP and one without. Obviously the non RVP has better balance, but with utd's fixtures I feel you could be left miles behind all the RVP captainers.
What do ye think? thanks a million.

Is it too much to wait for the City game to pass to invest in United players?

I think it´ll be easier by then to know who Moyes is trusting or not and who really is the in-form players.

You have 1FT & 3M in the bank. You're hovering around the 1M mark in FPL. Would you spend the FT on for instance Dzeko->Giroud before Giroud rises even more, despite the fact he might get injured in internationals?

You've probably got a few days to decide as I don't expect Giroud to rise again, or Dzeko to fall until Sun/Mon, possibly even later

Dzeko fall won't affect TV that much because he's only risen 0.3 and you need 0.4 for it to be a loss. Cheers

Yep. I did this transfer before Giroud's last rise, as it affected my planned transfers next week. Would be pretty unlucky if he got injured, but thems the risks

Benzema is terrible when he plays for France. He hasn't scored in 1155 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised to see Giroud start one of their two games.

How is David Luiz going to be from a FPL perspective this season. He is now available for 6.3 and i pretty much believe he is going to be a regular under Mourinho.
In addition to clean sheets he gets goals too(even free kicks). Is he a worthy addition to the backline? What do you guys think?

We really don´t know what´s on Mourinho´s mind, but my guess would be Terry to play all the league games and Cahill and Luiz to rotate between them or to play in CL like against Bayern... Just my 2 cents.

I plan to play mignolet every game, even the tough fixtures, so is there any point in going for a 4.5m keeper or just save the 0.5m and go with someone who's likely never to play?

If its worth having someone who plays who is the best 4.5m keeper - at moment i'm thinking either mcgregor or boruc

Oh I agree. Not worth it for a few games when Cardiff probably won't even keep CSs anyway. Say Migs averages 3ppg, then Marshall would need to score at least 25 points in those 5 games, which I don't think is realistic.

yeah might go for 4m keeper, at least i won't be torn as to who to play, cos the likely hood that away too city or chelsea or utd you might be tempted to bench migs then you 4,5m keeper may concede and mignolet keeps a clean sheet or makes lots of saves

Yes I have both and have the same concerns although I think Shaw was just an injury but I could be wrong.

Silva -> Ozil would tempt me, but the safe play is to save the transfer..

I think Shaw is first choice and will play when fit, and Mirallas will come good.

No need to ditch either just yet imo, although if Mirallas doesn't improve then he's on my 'out' list also.

For the balance of your team B is better. However I am not keen on both Soldado and Silva. Soldado hasn't proven anything to us, except that he is able to score penalties. And I think that there are better options than Silva.

Benteke for me. Giroud has to prove he can score anywhere, especially with 3 out of the next 4 away. Benteke has been bossing defenders everywhere for 9 months now without fail.

Different crowd on from last night so a repost for anybody with one eye on the dosh

The price checker sites are a great way to make money and improve the quality of your squad...but don't forget the fallers..Here's my stab at a team made up of crocks and random fallers since the openeing GW...plenty to think about and a few for the watchlist...

          Cech (6,4) xxxx (4.0)

          Kompany (6.4) Koscielny (5.4) Williams (4.9) Yanga Mbiwa (4.4) Brayford (3.9)

          Hazard (9.3) Cazorla (9.9) Sessegnon (6.8) Moses (6.2) Thomas (4.4)

          Suarez (10.9) Negredo (9.3) Lukaku (7.4) (99.7)

          Other contenders......Foster (4.9) Stekelenburg (4.9)
          Luiz (6.3) Kagawa (7.6) Chamberlain (6.8)
          Torres (8.6) Deulofeu (5.7) Remy (7.4) Bony (7.9) Carroll (7.4)

          Not bad...

            I am genuinely considering Moses.

Pretty great team and a good point to make. Lots of the fallers won't keep falling.

Yeah it's a bargain team compared to the cost of getting in some of the early risers...Swapping out Barkey > Moses for example represents a swing of 0.5 in TV, if Barkley was bought early, whilst Yaya > Hazard would be similar...

Yeah defenitely....making up a team to be less than the original 100 mill and only made up of fallers came down to straight choice between Kompany and Luiz....either/or are great buys though and both 0.2 fallers so far...although Kompany will go down by a further 0.1...
