Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 4 – Sunday

With two of the league’s meanest backlines going head-to-head we probably shouldn’t be surprised by the outcome. Yesterday’s goalless clash at St Mary’s was a day to forget as the clean sheet returns continue to arrive at a frantic pace:

Saints Burgeoning Backline
Mauricio Pochettino’s side may be toiling up top but when it comes to keeping out their opponents, Southampton are proving one of the most reliable around. The 0-0 draw against West Ham means that the Saints have now conceded just twice in the first four Gameweeks and have maintained the solidity that saw that ship just nine goals in the last 10 fixtures of the previous campaign. The upcoming schedule hints at more of the same – home games against Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull, supplemented with a trip to Stoke in the next seven continue to make Artur Boruc look a real bargain between the sticks, while Jose Fonte is benefitting substantially from the new Bonus Points System and is now up to 28 points in Fantasy Premier league (FPL), third top for defenders. Luke Shaw’s owners will be somewhat relieved after the left-back was subbed off towards the end of the match – injury fears were quickly allayed when he took to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was merely down to cramp.

Jaaskelainen the Hammers Hero
Another game, another clean sheet for Sam Allardyce’s side as the Hammers had Jussi Jaaskelainen to thank for a number of crucial saves. The Finnish stopper has moved up to second in the keeper rankings thanks to yesterday’s endeavours, with an extra save point and couple of bonus points taking his tally to 24 for the season – four more than any other West Ham defensive option. With four fixtures done and dusted, Jaaskelainen has been beaten just once, in a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke last time out, and with a home clash against an Everton side with a single goal in three preceding a trip to Hull, those holding West Ham defensive options will be optimistic of further returns. Back-to-back matches against Spurs, City, Swansea and Villa from Gameweek 7 onwards will test Wet Ham’s resolve, though Jaaskelainen can be expected to pick up plenty of save points to further his impressive tally.

Hammers Lack Cutting Edge
Yesterday’s result merely underlines just how much the Hammers miss the influence of Andy Carroll up top. Having finished the previous season with four goals and three assists in his final seven games, Carroll was expected to rack up the points in light of West Ham’s kind run of fixtures but his absence of injury has hindered the Hammers – barring a 2-0 win over Cardiff in Gameweek 1, they have stuttered in front of goal and have now registered three successive blanks. Carroll’s absence has clearly dented Kevin Nolan’s Fantasy appeal and with Modibo Maiga unable to over the same sort of threat up top, Allardyce will be desperate for free signing Mladen Petric to prove his fitness as he looks for alternatives in a desperate bid to turn the draws into victories.

Another Blank for Lambert
While West Ham can cite Carroll’s absence as a legitimate reason for their blunted attack, Pochettino’s side have no such excuses. The Saints boss fielded club record signing Pablo Osvaldo alongside Rickie Lambert up top as he opted for a 4-4-2 with Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez on the flanks but the former AS Roma man failed to reproduce the form that saw him notch 16 times in Serie A last time. For as much as they have impressed at the back, it seems this resolve has come at the cost of Southampton’s attacking ability – they have now scored a mere five times in their last 10 league games, with Rickie Lambert scoring just twice (once from open play) over that run. The England forward’s owners will likely keep faith due to the above-mentioned run of games but he’ll need to start producing to prevent a Fantasy exodus.

Post-match, Pochettino reckons much has to do with changing the dynamic to accommodate new boy Osvaldo but is convinced the results will soon arrive:

“There has been a lot more chemistry between all of our attacking players. Osvaldo arrived late to the group, so it is natural that it takes a little longer to get into the form of the team. You can see they are starting to mix well together, so it is only a matter of time before things start to work out positively for us.”

I thought he (and Stoke generally) looked very strong against City and after this week Stoke's fixtures look lovely. He won't score like one of the top guys though so you need to put the saved money to good use.

I'm talking more about delivery from set-plays being key to Hull's fortunes not so much his direct goal threat (their goal came from second phase set-piece at the weekend) and also, I was including the Cardiff fixture at the time so now, a week on, the landscape changes. Whittingham probably does look the better option (maybe) ahead of GW5. When you're dealing with 5.0 signings, you're often dealing short-to-mid term based on fixtures and current form - perhaps that now gives Whittingham the edge.

To be fair, he's was also listed high up on the Watchlist prior to the weekend so it's not like we were totally unaware of his potential over Brady.

He's a good player, but I just dont fancy Hull as a unit. Wasn't overly impressed watching them last season. Brady's attacking threat seems to be based around set pieces, so you're banking on a few favourable penalty decisions and inept goalkeeping against championship-standard free kicks.

I was genuinely impressed when I saw Whittingham play and he's worked his way back into the manager's thinking after dropping out of favour last season.

If you hate kneejerking then theres litttle point in Ben Arfa - although I do think he's the best option for next GW.

Save your transfer for the GW after and think about Rooney - or whichever player then becomes 'essential'

Keep Silva. He may appear red boxed right now but he will be fine for the Manchester Derby.
I'm thinking Soldado is 9.7m so sell him and you got 10.1m You need an extra .4m for Rooney so take a -4 hit and bring in a cheaper DEFENDER who will guarantee you a clean sheet. 🙂

Looks good. I like A with Coutinho and C has great potential. If Moses starts, he could be serious value at 6.2M.

Again, depends on Silva. If he is back for the derby, I might just save. You got Silva for a reason and Manchester derby could be full of goals.

Agreed that Silva is your main concern.
Coutinho hasn't produced the goods so far, guess we'll see tonight. If it is another blank then I'd look elsewhere. Plus you already have Studge.
Michu could be a great option - am looking at him as well. Even if he doesn't get in the points tonight I think it is worth seeing how his form is and if he is getting in good positions.
Don't think HBA is necessarily a knee-jerk. They've got decent fixtures (ish) coming up and he is in form.
Hazard - too punty for my tastes.

Don't save FT - you have to get rid of Silva IMO.
      You don't need to WC.

Can you tell me the code for your 'beat Forca' league?

Today apparently 412 managera have lost their faith with Soldado and around 407 mabagers have decided to put their money on Sturridge.
    Intresting right?

Soldado definitely deserves one more chance and whats going to happen to Srurridge once Suarez plays.

There is also no way Rodgers will allow Suarez to take the lead role from Sturridge for 2 reasons.......firstly Suarez is naturally the better support player and secondly Rodgers would never allow him to waltz back into the role Sturridge has made his own given his behaviour during the transfer window. It would completely undermine BR as a manager.

Sturridge will still play as the main striker once Suarez comes back, no chance that Suarez will take over that role. If anything, I think Sturridge will benefit by Suarez coming back.

Soldado will come good, but right now, Sturridge, Giroud and Benteke looks superior to him in the 9-ish million price range.

Really want to take a punt on Lamela or Erikson. Was all set on Lamela because i think he has more goals in him than Erikson but then Erikson played a blinder at Norwich and was on all set pieces and pushed quite far forward.

Should i stick to my guns and get Lamela or go for the seemingly safe option of Erikson?

Wait to see how both perform. Eriksen is a class player as is Lamela. From watching both play I do see Lamela being FPL gold though - very attack minded and excellent goal threat to go with his assists. Eriksen does score goals but I can see him eventually being more of an assister this year.

Ajax fans found Eriksen went amiss in big games and hasn't quite lived up to his potential. I disagree to varying extents on both points but I'm putting it there for the sake of balance.

The fact that he is on set pieces is more than enough to justify his place on your bench. If you are having to play him regularly that is a worry though, and most likely caused by Van Persie.

Agree that the Townsend issue is tricky but see what happens after the Europa League game on Thursday. AVB does like his players to fight for a spot and tends to ease them in to the squad whenever possible, so I'm inclined to say keep him and save the transfer for the week after.

Some wildcard justification / advice for you to consider (I apologise in advance for the length of this post!)...

    1. I have had Mignolet since the beginning of the season and he him as a season long keeper (if you'll excuse the pun) as things stand. I have had Boruc as back-up and he has done nothing wrong (he got me a clean sheet just yesterday). However, over the next twelve gameweeks, Mignolet's trickiest fixtures (10: arsenal, 12: everton, 16: tottenham) don't marry particularly well with Boruc. The best match I can find is Allan McGregor (10: SUNDERLAND, 12: PALACE, 16: STOKE). So, despite Southampton's defensive resilience, I am switching to McGregor and looking for a Saints defender.

    2. Other than Seamus Coleman (who I have had since GW1 and see no sense in ditching), I am struggling to pick a settled defensive line up. However, I am plumping for Jan Vertonghen (expensive but in a settled, solid side offering consideration attacking threat and clear BPS potential) and James Collins (Big Sam's West Ham are duller than mud but look very solid defensively). Why first question is....

PICK TWO BUDGET DEFENDERS WHOSE VALUE DOES NOT EXCEED £9.1m

    3. Pretty settled on a couple here. Memut Ozil is replacing Theo Walcott who has, unfortunately, flattering to deceive so far this campaign. For the extra £0.5m (and I appreciate that this won't be the case every week!) I think you get more attacking potential for your buck. I am bringing in Hatem Ben Arfa who, despite the difficult fixture list between GWs 6-11, offers excellent value for money and considerable attacking threat. I am less convinced but pretty satisfied in bringing in Pablo Hernandez. At £6.2m he has hit the ground running this season and appeared to be the primary source of attacking returns for Swansea during a tricky opening few weeks. A couple more bits of advice...

DO I PICK CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (£8m) OR SAVE THE MONEY AND BUY SIGURDSSON (£6.9M)?

IS PETER WHITTINGHAM THE BEST BUDGET MIDFIELDER ON THE MARKET AT £5m? I REALLY THINK THE LIKES OF TOM HUDDLESTONE COULD OFFER REAL VALUE AT THE SAME PRICE AND WITH A KINDER SCHEDULE.

    4. Up front, I started the season with Benteke and Giroud and am yet to hear a cohesive argument to ditch either. Likewise, I brought in Sturridge for Lukaku after GW2 and am happy to hold firm with the strikers. I appreciate that RVP offers considerable potential but, pound for pound so far this season, he has not returned as well as these three and, given the compromises his purchase would force elsewhere in the side, I just do not see the justification. If he had netted successive hat-tricks for United he might be 'essential' but at present he certainly isn't.

In fact, I don't see much value or certainty of starts in a lot of the top teams at present, hence no Chelsea, United or City in my side. Some may consider this a weakness but I would rather have the consistency of starts to be honest...

Anything, any advice, thoughts, opinion, gratefully received...

I agree, RVP is not worth the 14m based on his current form. Giroud, Benteke and Sturridge have higher TS and are all around 9m and even Campbell at 5.8m has the same TS as RVP.

I think replacing Walcott with Ozil is wise and is a move I am making also. I also agree with Hernandez at 6.2 but 8m Eriksen is just not worth the buck. I would def go for 6.9m Sigurdsson because you always need cash in the bank. I always have 0.5 at least in the bank. I am a hoarder.

I think anyone with Soldado should consider selling him after GW5 if he fails to impress and go for Sturridge. I say Sturridge because anyone who does not have giroud and benteke are absolutely mad.

Also, owning RVP means your bench is incredibly cheap and will weaken your midfield/defense as well. This is why RVP is a ridiculous purchase but if you do have RVP you ALWAYS have to (c) him.

      - I'm not sure if Sigurdsson is nailed-on at all, so Eriksen is the better option. However, I don't feel like investment in Tottenham midfielders is a good decision.
      - Keep you strikers.
      - I'm still not sure about Ozil over Walcott. Theo is obviously getting the chances and he can't miss forever!
      - Barfa will continue to deliver. I don't fancy Pablo though with Michu and Bony in the same team.
      - Whittingam looks the best 5m bet

Avoid Siggurdson, he did score two goals but he is playing in a position where there is a lot of competition - arguably the most in the league. Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli, Townsend and Dembele could play Siggurdson's position. And that's before you consider Lennon returning from injury and Paulinho's versatility. Couple that with Spurs' Europa league commitments in a tournament which their manager takes very seriously, and you're looking at a rotation nightmare. If you must buy one buy Eriksen as he is the sort of player Spurs really did need.

Whittingham is an excellent player. Brady is another option - but I'm not impressed by him that much. Really like your thinking with Tom Huddleston - seems to be nailed on but he doesn't have penalties which Whittingham and Brady do have.

Sigurdsson? Are you mad? Is this just because he scored 2 goals?

Blimey my contributions to this forum have been ridiculously few this year.

Just thought I would make you laugh / smile / whatever

I'm sitting in McGettigan's bar in Dubai airport waiting for a flight to Bahrain and there is a yank sitting blatantly at the bar with his laptop talking to a webcam chat girl..... Talk about not giving a feck....
