The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk- Sunday

West Ham defy all expectations to emerge from the Lane with all three points, with a defensive rock and cut-price midfielder key to the visitors’ win. For the hosts, Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to drop a big-money Spaniard is set to spark a scramble for the exits over the international break:

The Game Changer

The Hammers recovered from last week’s loss at Hull to register a highly-unexpected win at the Lane. Today’s stunning 3-0 triumph helped Sam Allardyce’s side to their fourth clean sheet in seven and turned the form book on its head as the visitors picked up the points for the first time since the season opener against Cardiff.

Fundamental to the Hammers’ performance was Winston Reid. With James Tomkins once again preferred alongside him in the heart of the back-four, the Kiwi centre-half opened the scoring midway through the second period and helped keep a host of big-money signings at bay in a superb rearguard showing.

With Joey O’Brien making way for Guy Demel in Allardyce’s XI, Reid is now the only defender to have started all seven of the Hammers opening league fixtures. Granted, Razvan Rat seems to have recently established himself as first-choice left-back but Reid – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – offers a guaranteed security of starts into one of the most resilient backlines around. Up to 38 FPL points after picking up maximum bonus, Reid has mainly been under the radar and is owned by less than 3% of FPL managers – he may have City and Swansea up next but today’s display highlights the Hammers are more than capable of picking up the points regardless of the fixture.

The Underused

Today’s outstanding solo effort at the Lane highlighted the raw talent of Ravel Morrison. For so long, it seemed the former United man was destined for the footballing scrapheap after a series of off-field misdemeanours threatened to end his promising career but, under the guidance of Allardyce, it seems the penny has finally dropped.

We’d high expectations at the start of the campaign after the midfielder excelled over the summer but the bandwagon stalled as Allardyce put the brakes on his early-season game time. Having now started each of the last four, though, today’s strike means Morrison has now scored twice in the previous three Gameweeks and with his form flourishing, investors are likely to come running for the 4.4 priced FPL prospect, with an ownership of less than 2% summing up his differential appeal.

With United’s Adnan Januzaj also arriving on our radars this week, it seems Morrison could be set to offer us another cut-price prospect for our five-man midfields, in a season that has already seen Aaron Ramsey, Robbie Brady and Ross Barkley excel in the budget bracket. Indeed, it was telling to see that Stewart Downing’s return to the first XI forced Matt Jarvis on to the bench – a sign of Morrison’s growing importance to the Hammers cause.

The Selection Poser

Without a goal in open play in the league this season, it was still, nonetheless, somewhat surprising to see Roberto Soldado make way for Jermain Defoe in this afternoon’s starting line-up. The latter’s scoring exploits in both domestic and European cup competitions had clearly staked a claim for inclusion but we’d expected Andre Villas-Boas to keep faith with his big-money signing from Valencia as Spurs welcomed West Ham to the Lane.

Instead, Soldado was afforded no more than a 15-minute second-half cameo appearance as Defoe toiled up top in the shock 3-0 loss. It leaves Spurs with a record of just four goals scored in the last five league matches and, in spite of a schedule that sees them square up to Villa, Hull and Newcastle in the next four, today’s team sheet is set to spark significant sales of Soldado right across the Fantasy games.

Still sitting on 14% ownership, an exodus looks on the cards for the 9.5 priced new boy over the international fortnight now, as Fantasy managers look to load up on similarly priced options such as Daniel Sturridge and Olivier Giroud, whilst Romelu Lukaku’s stunning form for Everton should also convince plenty to take the plunge. Defoe’s poor showing may, ironically, have merely strengthened Soldado’s position to start Gameweek 8 but few will be prepared to wait two weeks to test such a theory.

get on the price risers now to try and capture team value increases, and sort out who you actually want later

don't have to bring the players you actually want until Friday night/Sat morning right before deadline in 10+ days

just chase price rises now and post various RMWCTs, read other people's RMWCT's, and sort it over the break

Hard to tell....I am an owner and feel hopeful that he will pick up one of the wide spots. However, some of the Liverpool fans on here have been saying that if they continue with the same 352 then GJ and Enrique will occupy the wide berths.

the latter is what Berbilly Gilmore believes will happen

kind of makes sense that they might play with 5 defenders on the field as their defending has been woeful and only save by Mignolet's brilliance

when they are over 100%, they will rise by .1 that day at approximately 2:40am in the UK (rises happened about an hour ago)

when they are negative 100% or less, they drop .1

moves can only be .1 each day

maximum move between game weeks is .3

when players are flagged, the parameters for how much they need to rise or fall changes to a larger number

when players flags are removed, their numbers for rising or falling reset to zero, and in some cases (which I don't always follow the nuances of) they are "protected" from any price movement

that's the basic gist; will dig up a more complex explanation if you want

it is, but we can only have 3

        there's a bunch scoring

i knew i wanted the Uruguayan that came back in week 6 and i finally realized Soldado had to go

all the lateral transfers people are making guessing who will score week to week seems wasteful

i think there's enough data out there now to guess which defenders will be favored by the BAPs system and those willing to do a little research will get in more appropriate defenders for the current system

midfield is still a mine field

          Southern or Northern Cali?

Only time driving is good in this country is on long cross-country road trips. Otherwise, ridiculous in populous areas.

I think ExPat life is generally enjoyable. There's interesting cultural nuances and the things that are culturally amok are part of what makes the place different, almost charming sometimes. And one usually takes advantage of the things on offer locally better than the locals.

Tangentially: If you do relocate to the U.S. and go on a trip of some length to national parks and such, let me know, be happy to help advising.

If Ramsey, and I think he will, fail to continue his form, I may do Ramsey > Walcott. I think when Walcott and Cazorla are back, Ramsey's goal threat may be negatively affected.

Ah right. Lukaku may be good short term. But I dunno if I'd want to own him seeing as he could get dropped after one bad game. I'd rather have the other Belgian once he's healthy.

been thinking Giroud -> Bentenke for the same reason

approximately same scoring potential for less money, hard to argue the point

except, what do you do if lukaku gets injured? do you get remy or lambert, or do you have to raise money to go back to the strikers that now cost over 9?

as an arsenal supporter, giroud is still the most likely to be on the end of the other's good play

walcott is a better option than ozil because he gets assists however is much more direct on goal and will have ozil feeding him

According to Mou's system Hazard has to track back defend more than Oscar. Oscar meanwhile plays almost like a striker. He does track back yes.But is in a better position to score and assist.

Best option here chaps? Both leave enough cash for a Mirallas -> Walcott upgrade in GW8:

    A) Nolan -> Barkley
    B) Sturridge -> Lukaku

    Alternatively, any better transfers?

    Boruc, Davis
    Terry, Baines, Zabaleta, Toure, Ward

    Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud

Last I checked about 9 hours ago, Luks was on 30% on TotalFPL. Checked again moments ago, he's risen to 90%. Keen to bring him in Giroud seems the likelier one to go as I've got 3 Arsenal players.

    Boruc
    Dawson - Nastasic - Evra - Wilson - Mariappa
    Michu - Ozil - Arnautovic - Ramsey - Barkley
    Rooney - Suarez - Giroud

Offload Rooney/Giroud for Luks or stick with the forwards I have?

    A few thoughts on Tottenham

Given their good start to the season the manager was reluctant to change much.
After being spanked 3 0 by West Ham i cn see a few things happening

    1) Dawson will lose his place- was impossible to drop when they were keeping all those clean sheets. Now AVB has the excuse he needs
    2) Lukaku will see much more gametime
    3) Townsend another who my gradually be eased out

      1) agree
      2) not sure, Lamela hasn't looked good yet; think he's taking time to adjust to system (I really want to be a Lamela believer, but proof syas no)
      3) Townsend is in Lamela's spot according to some Spurs fans; Townsend on form, Lamela not proven that yet

      Agree with point 1.
Points 2&3 are related. At some point Townsend will surely lose his place with Lamela, Lennon and even Chadli all potentially playing on that wing. However Townsend was by far our best player yesterday and one of the better players against Chelsea so don't think he will be dropped just yet.
Our real problem going forward came from Siggy spending most the day playing centre mid alongside erikson rather than giving us an option out on the left. Rose coming back for Naughton may help as he supports the attack more so drastic changes may not be required.

No more changes worth a hit this week imo unless a new injury happens.
Moses, JWP and chester are your weakest links so in future weeks I would look at
Moses > Oscar / Walcott (if back form injury and looking sharp)
JWP > Morrison / Jan (if he holds his place)
Chester lowest priority by the time you get round to him he will probably be back from injusry
