The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

A stunning hat-trick from Luis Suarez maintains his devastating form and keeps Liverpool’s prolific “SAS” pairing on track. Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, a wonder strike from a lesser owned Austrian earns our attention, as David Moyes is forced to turn to his benched young starlet to help rescue three points and keep himself in touch with the leaders.

The Game Changer

We went in the Gameweek without a Premier League hat-trick this season – a statistic that was emphatically banished by Luis Suarez who single handedly dismantled West Brom at Anfield.

A superb solo effort opened his account, before two headers put the game to bed prior to Daniel Sturridge getting in on the act with a sublime fourth for Brendan Rodgers’ side. The Liverpool “SAS” produced again, then, taking their account to ten goals and four assists between them since the partnership was renewed in the Gameweek 6 win at Sunderland.

Incredibly, that has seen Daniel Sturridge score in every match since the return of Suarez, but, significantly, he’s now been overshadowed by his Uruguayan strike partner for the last two outings, with Suarez set to pocket 17 points this evening to add to the 10 gathered in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle.

Predictably perhaps, Suarez is emerging as the weapon of choice in this vibrant Liverpool attack but the consistency of Sturridge continues to make a case for doubling up on the duo. A trip to league leaders Arsenal next weekend will provide their sternest test yet – deliver again and the case for “SAS” acquisition will build to new heights.

The Underused

While he was on the losing side at Old Trafford, the performance and superb dead ball strike by Marko Arnautovic at last revealed his potential.

United’s tormentor in the first half, the Austrian was handed back his role on the flank as Peter Crouch returned to lead the attack for the Potters. Nevertheless, Arnautovic made his mark on his fifth Premier League start to suggest that he could yet be a key figure for Mark Hughes’ side and a factor in our Fantasy seasons.

Priced as a 5.5 midfielder, we’ve already seen Arnautovic deployed as a lone striker, while his propensity to shoot and ability at set-plays adds to his potential. Owned by less than 1% Fantasy Premier League managers, it’s likely that the Austrian will have to prove his worth again before interest begins to escalate given the competition for places in our midfield, even within his price bracket.

Even so, with home matches against Southampton, Sunderland and Cardiff to come in the next five, Arnautovic should have the opportunity to impress and draw further attention to his talent.

As a side note, Mark Hughes has confirmed, post-match, that illness forced Arnautovic to make way shortly after half-time.

The Selection Poser

While the Suarez vs Sturridge debate will be re-ignited and reassessed following Suarez’s superb haul, elsewhere it was the benching of Adnan Januzaj that will have caused some concern amongst his early adopters.

Having started in the 1-1 draw with Southampton, David Moyes elected to take the 18-year-old out of the spotlight for the visit of Stoke, only to turn to him in the final quarter to reinvigorate the ailing home side. Once again, Januzaj impressed, raising the expectations of the Old Trafford crowd whilst bringing fresh ideas and impetus to the United attack. Ultimately, his introduction was instrumental in their comeback which saw them earn the three points.

It’s not clear what this means for Januzaj – clearly, as we’ve previously indicated, Moyes appears to need the young winger’s influence right now. While today’s decision to start him from the bench will have caused some concern amongst his Fantasy owners, then, his performance will have at least confirmed his importance to the cause. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to see Januzaj start at Fulham in Gameweek 10.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who to bring in for Vidic?

    A) Rangel
    B) Chico
    C) Glen Johnson
    D) Suggest another option

    Cheers 🙂

    Currently leaning towards Glen Johnson

    Current Defence:
Vidic Walker Ivanovic ( Clyne, Burner )

with those defenders you got, I would get a Norwich defender to save money

      Do it.
3 weeks ago I had most front 3 template : Rooney - Giroud - Sturridge
I needed Suarez when he was back , and I did a brave move at that stage: sold Giroud (while most of people sold Rooney or Sturridge).

All of SAS + Rooney have outscored Giroud in the last 3 games.

As long as giroud remains the lone striker for arsenal he will be involved and get points. Both he and ozil looks ridiculously sluggish and tired against palace. But they will bounce back

    Worth a hit?

    a) Giroud & Kolo -> Rooney & AWilliams

    b) Giroud & Amalfitano -> Aguero & RavMo

    c) not for a hit

Owned Giroud since. 8.5 - tough to let go but fixtures say it's time to let go of triple attacking Arsenal coverage. Have Ozil & Ramsey. Have no one from either Manchester team.

    Cheers.

I would go as far as to say he's the best player in the league. But what's he essential to? I've not owned Ramsey all season and I've been top 20k throughout.

You'll find no bigger fan of Suarez on here than myself . But Suarez' fixtures are about to get tougher and I DO think they HAVE to slow down. That, despite him being the best player in the league.

I think Arsenal will beat Liverpool. Giroud will be involved.

I'm also not convinced by your alternatives just yet. Lukaku has tough fixtures, Negredo hasn't quite done it for me yet and Benteke is still finding his feat plus the Hammers will be tough away.

Yeah traditionally whm is a bad fixture but I think they are adopting a policy of attacking at home which makes them leak goals at home. I believe they had something like the 5th most goals at home last season with almost none away. The 3-1 loss to City at home is an example of that - some of the defending was awful.

If Negredo starts I need him.

I think they happen about 2:20 these days, someone might correct me.

Williams doesn't pick up as many cards as Chico and seems to attract baps. But I still haven't heard whether he's fit to play tomorrow, he must be back soon.

2:20 UK time? I'm assuming this is 2.20 a.m as well yeah?

That's what I was thinking, but just had a quick look at the stats, and Williams has had 0 shots on goal in 450 minutes.

Chico on the other hand, has had 8 Shots in 720 mins, 2 On target, 4 in the 6 yard box, and 2 in the wide areas of the penalty box. 6 in all in the Penalty box. Seems to have the better goal threat stats wise if you ask me, but in the games I have seen Williams looked more of a goal threat....idk

That's true, Williams won't get you goals. But that's not what I got a Swans def for, I don't expect many anyway. You have a point though. Just be aware, Chico is a bit of a card magnet.

Yes a fine victory, I don't think it's too early to say. 🙂

Think it's becoming undeniable that when Flamini is gone Arsenal's attacking play suffers (because he's not covering the backs of the attacking 4 so they're not as free to attack). Arteta just isn't the same kind of destroyer, even if he is the better passer.

It does make me see Arsenal attacking cover as less essential, especially for the huge LIV and mun games. I do hope we don't miss him too much.

I've been quite enjoying the novel feeling of being at the top of the league with Arsenal tbh, long may it continue.

While i'd like to predict a Liverpool win next week, I reckon the leaky defences for both sides will mean we end up with a 2-2 draw

Giroud with over 40% ownership and tougher fixtures has to be the one heading out, but hard to say au revoir

Lads from what I recall, price changes are set around 1.40 GMT.

When UK observes British Summer Time (GMT+1) that means the price changes happen around 2.40.

Now we are back to GMT, the price changes should happen around 1.40, ie. 35 minutes time.

    We'll find out soon anyway.

Not particularly, it means Ramsey plays in central midfield where he's scored all his goals as far as I'm aware.

It might mean Arsenal score less as a team (and defend worse)

Yeah Wilshere was hurt against Dortmund.

Loads of Ramsey's points have come with Wilshere on the pitch.

The guy is injured so often anyway he's not really a problem for Ramsey even if he was scoring often which he isn't.

So far, this has been a great season for Premier League.
Very refreshing to have Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, Southampton all in the mix. Most wide open in my memory. But, who will eventually fall away?

Arsenal: for me, in for the long haul. Wenger is a top manager and Walcott to return still. Serious contenders for title.

Liverpool: no reason they cant do it. Personally dont think they will win, but with this strike force and flexibility with formation, no Europe and Coutinho to return, have to believe they are in it till given reason not to.

Chelsea: my prediction is they win but average strikers makes them vulnerable.

Everton: wont win, but 5 wins in 6 and improved a lot it seems. Solid side and can't be counted out of top 6. Cant see top 4 though.

Southampton: massive improvement. Signed players who improved first 11 and have a manager who appears to be improving the players they already had. Defense seems solid, but soon to be tested more. I'd say top 6 possible, not top 4 though.

Man Utd: Moyes will eventually get more than he is from them. Keep in mind they've played City, Chelsea, Liverpool already. Not to be counted out obviously, but I honesty think they may already be out of the title race in real terms. Anyones guess though.

Man City: serious contenders. Personally think 2nd to 4th likely. Seem to lack something for me. But, quality wise, are too good to not make top 4. Need to keep Aguero on form though. When he plays, City play. But too often he can randomly go quiet.

Tottenham: miss the "get out of jail" card that Bale gave them. Can be exposed like by West Ham if things aren't going right. For me, not title contenders. Not got a reliable source of goals. Squad is very good, but first 11 not as good as some other sides. I think Lamela may be used second half of season and will be fresh come then. He could give them a boost at that time, but not enough to win title. 4th at best for me. Should be aiming for title as no reason on paper they cant beat Arsenal or Liverpool, but long term, just cant see them beating Chelsea or City.

I think Everton will finish above Southampton and possibly United if they keep playing so poorly. You are right though they have a few big games out of the way

My worry for Everton is Lukaku will need resting sometimes and other strikers are poor.
Next fixtures will really test them

I'm afraid top 4 will remain standard. Utd won't finish outside the top 4 because they have Rooney and RVP.

I agree with pretty much all of what you've said there.

Though I think you may be overestimating both Liverpool and Arsenal a little 😉

Chelsea or City will win the league I reckon, predicted that at the start of the season, and still think its true, their sides have too much quality.

The other 2 spots in the top 4 could go to any of Arsenal, Liverpool, United or Spurs though

United have to come good sometime soon, don't they? Right? Though i'll love it if this sort of form continues all season

I think Wenger v Pellegrini is the difference in City v Arsenal. Suarez for Liverpool similarly carries them that wee bit further. Honestly can see United missing out. Bad season to have new manager. Too many improved sides.

Nice overview. It does highlight how similar in quality the teams are in the league so for that reason I can understand Tottenham being placed 6th. I really don't think they'll finish there though because they have one of the best squads and possibly the best defence in the league alongside Southampton right now. Once they gel, which I can't imagine them not by the end of the season, I expect them to at least be in the battle for fourth. I think they might lose it due to AVB's continued dedication to Europa, so 5th perhaps. I genuinely can see United finishing 6th as I keep seeing limitations in Moyes as a tactician.

I hope they make 4th but cant help but think they have too many 7/10 types and not any 10/10. No one has the extra when they need inspiration

Yep. No Ozil, Suarez, RVP, in there.
Not even a Mata, Aguero either. As in, top level, but not as consistent and explosive. Or even a Benteke fixture proof type.
